Chapter 1

Shadows on 5th Avenue

New York, 7:43 PM – Torrential Rain

It was raining as if the sky itself wanted to wash something away from the city — blood, guilt, or maybe just the trace of a disappearance.

Elena Carter pulled her beige trench coat tighter around her slender frame and crossed the street toward the old café on the corner. La Coda was the kind of place you only heard about in whispers, from people who pretended they didn’t know anything.

A message she’d received that morning still echoed in her mind:

“Brooklyn docks. That’s where the girl vanished. No cops. It’s the cartel. Follow Luca Moretti.”

Just a name. That’s all she was given.

But somehow, it was enough.

Luca Moretti. Alleged leader of one of the oldest Italian crime families in New York. Never convicted. Never caught. Always a few steps ahead.

Elena wasn’t ready to meet him. Not tonight.

Not with her heart pounding like a broken clock and rain-soaked shoes squishing with every step.

But she saw him.

He was sitting at a table in the back, his back against the wall — a man who never left anything to chance. His dark gray shirt looked custom-made, worn with effortless elegance. His hands were bare, except for a heavy watch and a lion-engraved ring.

He was handsome. Dangerously handsome.

And he was watching her.

— “Do you always walk into places where you’re not welcome?” he asked, not sarcastically — just with a cold curiosity.

— “Only when I’m looking for the truth,” she replied, though her voice wavered slightly.

— “And what makes you think you’ll find it here?”

Their eyes locked. Intense. Like two weapons aimed at each other, fingers already on the trigger.

Elena knew she was making a mistake.

But she couldn’t stop. Not now.

Not when she was finally face-to-face with the man who ruled an entire world from the shadows.

— “Because someone told me you know what happened to Emily Reyes.”

Luca tilted his head slightly.

— “Then, Miss Carter… you’re in more danger than you realize.”

The warmth of the café pressed down on her like a heavy blanket on her wet skin.

But it wasn’t the heat.

It was him.

Luca Moretti was the kind of man you’d see in the newspaper only if something tragic happened — and even then, no name would be mentioned.

The man in the shadows.

No record. No evidence.

Yet every thread of power tied tightly in his hand.

— “If you want to stay alive, I’d suggest not playing with the name you just said,” he murmured — calm, but with a clear edge of warning.

— “I’m not playing,” Elena replied, lifting her chin. “A girl is missing. Emily Reyes. The police are doing nothing. Her parents are desperate. And your name came up in places you wouldn’t expect.”

Luca smiled. A smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

— “Do you even know what you’re getting into?”

Elena hesitated. A second. Maybe two.

Then lied.

— “Yes.”

His gaze sharpened. Without any sudden moves, Luca stood and crossed the room. He stopped just a meter from her. For a brief moment, the world around them went silent.

— “Tell me, Miss Carter… in your idealistic journalism school, did they teach you what it means to vanish without a trace?”

— “Is that a threat?” she asked, though she already knew the answer.

— “No. It’s a warning. And maybe… a test.”

Luca tilted his head slightly, like a predator studying his prey. Then, in a low voice:

— “Come with me.”

— “Where to?”

— “You want the truth, don’t you? It’s not found in cafés or P*F files. It’s in places people like you have no business being.”

Elena’s hesitation lasted exactly as long as a heartbeat. Then she nodded.

— “Okay.”

She didn’t know why she said yes. Maybe curiosity.

Maybe madness.

Or maybe because, in his eyes, she saw a story far greater than a single disappearance.

A story she was already part of.

Outside, the rain hadn’t stopped. It poured in angry waves — a celestial warning.

Elena followed Luca onto the wet sidewalk, her steps quick, her heart racing.

Neither of them spoke. It felt like a scene from a movie.

But it wasn’t.

It was real.

And dangerous.

A black limousine waited at the corner, its driver stepping out as soon as he spotted them.

Luca never said “open the door” — people just knew what to do.

Elena slid into the back seat, feeling the cold leather beneath her and his eyes fixed on her.

— “You can still get out,” he whispered.

— “I don’t want to.”

The car pulled away.

City lights blurred across the fogged-up windows, and the silence inside felt almost unbearable. Elena realized she had just stepped onto a razor’s edge.

She didn’t know Luca Moretti.

Only what they said about him: dangerous, intelligent, ruthless.

— “What are you really looking for?” he finally asked in a low tone.

— “The truth,” she answered, staring straight ahead. “And a story worth telling.”

Luca gave a short laugh.

— “My story isn’t meant to be read. It’s meant to be burned.”

Elena turned to look at him. In the pale streetlights, for the first time, she saw something in his eyes that wasn’t a threat.

It was pain.

Buried. Deep.

— “Tell me about Emily,” she asked.

Luca didn’t answer right away. Instead, he pulled out an old phone from his pocket, entered a code, and handed it to her.

— “Here. This is what I know. But don’t think it’s everything. Not even close.”

Elena stared at the screen. A photo. An address. One word:

“Warehouse 17.”

— “What is that?”

— “It’s where the questions stop. And the answers begin — the kind no one wants.”

The car slowed. They’d arrived at a derelict industrial building, its walls blackened, windows shattered.

A chill ran down Elena’s spine.

— “This is where it all begins,” Luca said. “And if you’re not careful, it’s where it can end.”

The door opened. Wind and rain slapped her face — but she didn’t step back.

She moved forward. One step. Then another.

And in that moment, in the dark heart of New York, Elena Carter wasn’t just walking into an abandoned warehouse.

She was stepping into a world from which no one walks out the same.
