Chapter 7

“Mom, what are you doing here?” I said after ending the call.

She stormed toward me and snatched the phone from my hands.

“Cassidy?” Mom tried to open my phone, but a code was protecting it. “How could you! Our family was broken by magic, yet you work with a witch. Do you not care about us at all?” She screamed at the top of her lungs. Tears of sorrow ran down her freckled cheeks as she pulled at her red hair.

Mom was extremely unwell. It’s not okay to have extreme mood shifts within minutes.

“No, Mom,“ I said, taking my phone back. “Elaine is a friend, and she only practices white magic.”

“White magic is Devil’s worship in disguise. It’s unholy and unclean. Magic destroys lives and souls just like it did to our family,” said Mom. She was not ready to calm down or listen.

“Okay, Mom,” I said, tossing my phone onto the bed. “Relax.”

Mom grabbed me by the arms. “Promise me, Cassidy. Say that you would never go near any magic or witches. You must promise me.”

Mom’s outrage was scaring me. I could see the pain in her bloodshot eyes. She was barely holding it together.

“I promise, Mom,” I said and hugged her.

She shoved her face into my shoulder and cried her heart out. “I love you all so much. I didn’t mean to yell at my baby. Forgive me and call Mason now, or else I’ll drown in guilt for ruining your day.”

I tapped her back. “Okay, I will do it. Just promise to be okay and take some rest. Your concern is a shield protecting me from harm. It could never ruin me.”

After comforting her a little more, Mom went downstairs so I could call Mason.

The small yet dramatic fight with my mother had ruined my excitement completely. Now, I wasn’t sure if I should call him or not. So, I sent him a text instead. I also had one unread message from Elaine.

Elaine’s text:

I am unsure about the disturbances it may cause, but I am sure it won’t be fatal. Shoot me a text if you notice something strange. I am here to help. Come by when you can. Just don’t delay it for too long.

I asked her to arrange a seance next week and thanked her again for all the help.

My text to Mason:

Hi! It’s Cassidy Black if you don’t have my number anymore.

Mom gave me your message. Just wanted to let you know I arrived in Wneebeach Springs today. Want to hang out?

We had not talked in years. It was best to keep the text as short as possible.

After texting, I went downstairs to look for Mom.

She was cooking in the kitchen with a big grin on her face. How she was keeping up with so many emotions was beyond me.

“Did you call him?” She asked immediately upon seeing me.

I hopped on a kitchen stool. “I sent him a text.”

“A text?” Mom dropped her knife onto the counter. “I remember you being obsessed with this boy. You used to look for excuses to call him.”

“A lot has changed. It’s been years. That teenage spark has faded. I am not sure if it’s there anymore,” I said. “What are you making?”

She picked up the knife and began chopping again. “Lasagna. You can share it with Mason today.”

“Don’t jump to conclusions. He might be busy,” I said.

“Have you stopped going to the shrink you were seeing?” I asked.

She lifted her eyes and looked at me with displeasure. “Can a shrink help us break Satan’s spell?”

“No, but he can help us get through the grief of losing Dad. It’s okay to feel lost after losing someone special. He was your high school sweetheart,” I answered.

“I’ll be alright after I have my revenge.” She chopped harder. “No shrink can help with the rage I feel inside.”

It was hard to get through Mom. She was trying her best to survive the pain and protect her family. So, I switched the subject to lighter things and helped her cook. Mia participated as well.

I wanted Mom to regain the happiness that went away with her first and only love. I promised myself to help her achieve that, inch by inch.

The doorbell rang amid our conversation.

“I’ll get that,” I said, licking the sauce off my fingers.

I opened the door and was taken aback by the person before me. It was Mason. He flashed a pearly smile my way and ran his fingers through his silky raven-black hair. I could feel the definition of his big muscles and snatched waist through his tight-fitting black sweater. Oh, god, he looked more stunning than the version of him I knew in high school.

The spark was there. It was definitely there. My body could feel it all over.

“Hi, Cassidy. You look lovely,” he said, handing me a fancy black box.

I took the box with shaky hands. “Hi. You look more lovely. I meant handsome. You look lovely and handsome.”

“Thanks, I guess,” he said with a skeptical look. “I hope I didn’t disturb you by coming over. You didn’t reply to my texts, so I thought maybe I should stop by to chat.”

Shoot! I must have put my phone on silent accidentally.

“Sorry, I was helping Mom cook. Please come in.” I moved to the left and gestured for him to step in.

He walked inside, and I couldn’t help but check out his body from behind. That man was smoking hot.

He made small talk with my family, and I watched from a distance. What should I say to him? I was practicing my words.

“Have a seat with Cassidy in the living room. You two haven’t seen each other for so long. Mia and I will finish this up here,” suggested Mom.

“Thanks, Mrs. Black, for welcoming me into your home. It would be nice to talk alone with Cassidy for a while,” said Mason.

He and I sat on a couch. The middle seat remained empty between us. We shared an awkward few smiles before any of us spoke.

“So, how’s life? We never had a chance to talk after high school,” began Mason. “I heard you got a decent job and apartment in the city from your mother.”

“It’s a start. My father died right after I graduated. So I couldn’t work for a while,” I said.

His expression dropped. I've heard of that. My condolences go out to you and your family. I lost my grandmother many years ago. I know how you feel. If I weren't on another continent, I would have attended the funeral.”

“It’s okay. I wouldn’t expect you to drop everything and show up at my dad’s funeral when we hadn’t talked in years,” I said with an awkward smile. It was horrible! The conversation was becoming grim. I had to lighten the mood.

“What have you been up to? I asked.

“I am running our family’s wine business,” he said.

He picked up the box he had brought that I had put on the coffee table. “Here. I brought a bottle of our finest for you.”

“Thanks,” I said.

We tasted the wine together. It was delicious, and he explained how it was made and the types of wines. I barely paid attention to his words when my mind was so distracted by his looks. Everything about him was so breathtaking.

“Cassidy, can I ask you something?” he said.

“Of course,” I said, straightening myself up.

“Would you like to go on a date with me tomorrow? If you’re not seeing anyone, of course,” He said.

My mouth fell open. I think I lost my balance a little while sitting there.

“What! What? Yes, of course. I am single,” I answered clumsily.

“Then would you like to?” he asked again.

“Uh, yes. No, I mean. I am going somewhere out of town with my family,” I answered.

He looked at his wristwatch. “Then how about tonight? It’s only 6:45.”

I looked at Mom, working in the kitchen. Going on a date with Mason was like a dream come true, but my family needed me.

“I can’t. Mom needs me,” I said.

“No, I don’t need her. You two are free to go wherever you want after having dinner with us,” Mom spoke from the kitchen.

Gosh, it was a big house. How did she hear us? I forgot about my Mom’s superhuman hearing. We often got in trouble as children thanks to her gift.

“Your mom has given us permission now. If you don’t want to, you can say it outright. No need to find perfect excuses,” said Mason politely.

“No. It’s not that. Okay, let’s go on a date. I would love to,” I said.

We had lasagna with my family, just like my mom wanted. The food was delicious, and so was his company. I couldn’t help but picture us in different romantic and sexual scenarios.

He was such a gentleman that he cheered up Mia and Mom.

After dinner, I put on a borrowed dress from my mother to wear on our first date. None of Mia’s dresses would fit my enormous chest. Lastly, I applied some red lipstick and powdered my face.

The plan was to watch a movie since we already had dinner and were short on time.

As horror fans, we picked a scary one. I am glad we did, as it gave me an excuse to grab his tight, muscular arms.

We exited the movie theatre with hand in hand, laughing about the horrible ending.

“I had a great time,” He said as we walked down the street to my house.

“Me too,” I said.

He grabbed my hand, and we stopped. His beautiful brown eyes stared into mine with interest and affection.

His face slowly inched towards me. Oh my, he was leaning in for a kiss. Butterflies flew in my stomach. I closed my eyes and helped him close the distance between our mouths, and once our lips touched, it was pure magic. He softly sucked on my lower lip.

“Ah!” He groaned in pain.

I opened my eyes to find him at least a few feet away from me on the ground.

I rushed to help him. “What happened?”

“Someone violently pushed me. My arm is burning,” Mason replied, pressing on his right arm.

I looked around and found the well-lit street empty. There wasn’t a soul around us.

  • Under the incubus' protection   Epilogue

Two months had gone by since the war at Voocrod. With Jane and Benedict out of our lives, things were back to normal, mostly. The loss of our father was irrevocable, but we were grateful to have each other. Mom’s emotions had gotten under control, and she was slowly returning to her old self. Desmond was now her favorite person in the world. She could barely have a family dinner without him. It made me so happy to see their unique bond.Mia was doing well, too. Her scars had healed, and she had met a wonderful guy a month ago. Things were going pretty well. Her new boyfriend, Jack, had become Mom’s second favorite, so we expected a lot from that relationship.Derrick’s life had changed drastically as well. He now believed in magic and demons and supported my relationship with Desmond. What shocked us the most was when he and Becky announced they were officially dating. Good for Becky! She was a sweetheart who had always done so much to help me and my family. I couldn’t wait to have h

  • Under the incubus' protection   Chapter 116

“Help, help!” I threw my fists at the window panically. In the building’s empty parking lot, there was no one to hear my distress-filled screams. I tried the door handle again, but it wouldn’t budge.Benedict’s demons had me cornered. Nothing was off limits for them. The fact that Alistair was on the enemy’s side was a greater shock than finding Desmond’s truth. I believed Xolmon because he acted so normal. I should have known better. Why did I agree to meet him, knowing very well that demons could look and behave normally?“Save the screaming for when we torture you, girl,” Hepzibah, the demoness, taunted. Her sharp claws gripped my shoulders, pulling me out of my seat. I struggled and shrieked. Even though it was pointless, I called Desmond’s name. The monster of my nightmares had caught me. Who would save me now? He was the only one I trusted after God.As I was kicking my feet, everything became a blur. I could hear the demons snickering at me. It all faded slowly. I had passed ou

My heart throbbed with the clock’s second needle. It was around midnight. Desmond had left fifteen minutes ago for Voocrod, leaving me and my family at Becky’s apartment. The much-awaited final war had begun. I had begged him to take me with him, but he said it was too dangerous. “Humans suffer the most during spirit wars, Cass,” Desmond had said. “Fiends will not hesitate to spill innocent blood. Violence is entertainment for them. What I fear the most is them taking you hostage to hurt me. Your love is my strength and my weakness. It doesn’t matter how close we are to winning the war. I would drop everything and sacrifice myself to save you.”Now, I was forced to wait without updates. Desmond wasn’t the only one who cared. I cared about his safety, too. Resting on Becky’s couch, I prayed to God for our victory and to bring my demon back to me unharmed.Becky wasn’t there because she had to leave to see her grandmother because of a medical emergency. My friend, however, was kind en

The water rapidly hit the rocks in a narrow stream. I watched it continuously flow. Nature is truly a miracle and the best way to refresh your mind. However, nothing can ease the anxiety of a current challenge. I couldn’t stop thinking about what Ophelia had said about not seeing a trapped child there. The war that was soon to come entailed death and imprisonment. What would I choose for my aunt when I wasn’t sure about her sins? Punishing an innocent would eat me up alive. There had to be a solution.“There is, Cass,” Desmond spoke. For the past five minutes, gushing water was the only sound around us. “I brought you here to clear your mind. Don’t punish yourself because of Jane.”With a lowered head, I walked up to Desmond. “I am sorry. Don’t you find this extremely troubling?”“No.” Desmond shook his head. “Because the solution is obvious.”“Which is what?” I said, desperate for anything.“Jane hasn’t given us any proof of her innocence. We don’t trust anyone,” Desmond began. I wa

  • Under the incubus' protection   Chapter 113

I put a hand over my eyes, knowing very well that I could only conceal my face and not my thoughts from the two demons around me. How could I control my thoughts? For us humans, our minds and social media are the only two places to criticize safely. It was so unfair to have that taken away from you. I wished for the ground beneath to swallow me to save everyone from further embarrassment.“But I didn’t say anything, mother,” said Desmond. He must be trying to divert her attention from me. My boyfriend was very forgiving of my insulting thoughts. Was his mother the same? The lady opened her eyes to reveal the most striking golden eyes. The color was similar to Desmond’s siren irises, but they lacked the glow and appeared more natural. Her overall look reminded me of Rose from Titanic. She had red hair with the fairest skin and an elegant fashion sense.“You know I have a gift for this. You were about to introduce this beautiful human girl to me as your partner,” she spoke with a toothy

It was finally happening. Desmond’s tongue was so deep in my mouth that I could feel us becoming one. I didn’t want it to end. My mind couldn’t help but compare the kiss to the one I had shared with Charles. Kissing Charles was slobbery and warm. Whereas kissing Desmond was discovering infinite pleasures within your mouth while losing all control and touch with your surroundings. My feelings for my demon were just as massive as the difference between the two make-out sessions, which amplified the bliss even more.I liked how one of Desmond’s hands was still on my boob. He had already helped me explore the pleasures of my body in countless ways. Yet, I still wanted more. Not even an eternity locked and lost in his body could quench my thirst for him. I was addicted to him.Desmond’s hands traveled around my body, searching for more to grab and feel. With the same intention, I unzipped his jacket and slipped my hands underneath his shirt, feeling his soft skin and ripped body.“Cass, s

My eyes dropped to Desmond’s mouth, desperately waiting for a yes to come out of there. We had been apart for far too long, and only a few days away from him had felt like a million years of torture. All of Desmond’s lies and mistakes were forgiven and forgotten. His unusual appearance and true self became a part of me. Nothing mattered in that moment. My aching heart only sought solace in the man before me. He was the one. He had always been the one. The moment he walked into my life, no other man interested me. My knight in shining armor was perfect. His horns, wings, and tail were a bonus, not an unholy defect or curse. I wholeheartedly accepted and loved him exactly the way he was.Desmond was testing my patience with his silence. Deliberately, I filled my mind with passionate thoughts, letting him know how every inch of me longed for him. I could see the result of my experiment in his eyes. They looked back at me with amazement and a yearning more intense than mine.“Are you su

Standing close to the guest room window, I felt the chilly city air fan my face. Without a blanket over my shoulders, I would freeze to death. I watched the sparkling city lights and the never-ending sounds. It was two in the morning, and the streets were full of life. I would have found the scene enjoyable if my mind wasn’t troubled by a hundred different emotions. Thanks to Becky for having a three-bedroom apartment so I could have a separate guest room. That day’s events were bizarre and too overwhelming. My mind was all over the place, and I needed time to rearrange my thoughts and think of my next step.“Can I come inside?” Desmond knocked at the ajar door.“Yes, please,” I said, repositioning my blanket more fashionably. The most dominant thoughts in my mind were about Desmond. There was so much that needed to be said.Desmond walked inside, closing the door behind him. My eyes remained glued to the window. I could hear him slowly approaching me. There was tension and hesitation

  • Under the incubus' protection   Chapter 109

Panic took over me when I heard footfalls for the third time. The first two times, it was Becky, but the steps felt heavier that time. I huffed and closed my hands into tight fists, almost piercing my skin with my sharp nails.“Cass, we’re back,” Desmond’s voice confirmed my fear.I turned around with partially opened eyes, prepared to face the wrath of my mother. Mom was unconscious in Desmond’s arms, and Becky was shocked beyond words.“Oh my God!” Becky’s jaw was almost touching the floor, and her eyes were twitching in a concerning way. “Am I magic now? Do the rules of the real world apply to me anymore, or am I now a boundless spirit floating in this never-ending universe we call life?”“None of that. You flew here at an extraordinary speed with me. The rules remain the same.” Desmond burst Becky’s bubble.Becky stared at Desmond like he was an alien or an unbelievable illusion. “I still can’t believe you are real. Cassidy must be hallucinating. He can’t be that good-looking and
