Chapter 1

"Everyone, come take a look! Stop whatever you're doing and come see this!"

The man dragged me all the way from the elevator to the main office floor, pitching his voice loud on purpose.

"This new hire just started today, and he's already trying to claw his way up by trading on his looks! In the elevator just now, right in front of me, he had the nerve to press himself against my wife!"

Over a hundred employees stopped what they were doing and craned their necks to look.

The man's wife stood beside him, her face drained of color, stammering out a defense. "Honey, it really wasn't like that. He was only helping me..."

"Shut your mouth!" The man shoved her hard. She stumbled back into a desk and didn't dare say another word.

The coworkers around us started pointing and whispering, their eyes full of contempt and the eager anticipation of watching a scene unfold.

"Isn't that Brett Sandler? The new guy picked the wrong guy to mess with."

"Exactly. Everyone knows Brett runs this place like he owns it. Look at this new one, though, he's got the kind of face that gets him into trouble. Bet he really did do something shameless."

"Getting that close to Melanie Forrest? That's just asking to get caught red handed."

The ugly comments kept crawling into my ears.

So this was the infamous Brett Sandler.

I took a deep breath and fixed him with a sharp stare. "Are you done making a scene? Let go of me."

"Let go? Scum like you doesn't get to stay in this company. If I don't teach you a lesson myself today, you'll learn it the hard way out there in the real world."

Brett clenched his fist and swung it toward my face.

Just as I was about to fight back, a sharp female voice cut through the office from the far end.

"What's all this noise during work hours? Has everyone forgotten they have jobs to do?"

The crowd parted. A middle-aged woman in an expensive suit and heavy makeup came clicking across the floor in high heels.

The moment Brett saw her, he let go of my collar and rushed over with a fawning smile.

"Ms. Barrymore, you're finally here!" He jabbed a finger at me. "This one just started today, and he's already looking for a shortcut.

"Caught him red-handed hitting on my wife in the elevator. A shameless gigolo like this, corrupting the whole office, needs to be fired right now."

Ms. Barrymore narrowed her eyes and looked me over, her gaze crawling from my face down to my waist with an open, lecherous hunger she made no effort to hide.

"Sturdy build, decent face," she said with a scornful snort. "Shame you're putting it to the wrong use.

"Kid, if you wanted to sleep your way up, you picked the wrong branch. We don't take your kind here."

That actually made me laugh.

I straightened my rumpled tie, drew myself up to my full height, and looked at her coldly.

"You're Victoria Barrymore, the branch's vice president? As a company executive, you might want to watch your mouth before you insult an employee for no reason at all."

Ms. Barrymore blinked, apparently unused to a new hire pushing back like this.

Brett, thinking he'd found new ammunition, snapped, "Ms. Barrymore, look at him, not even flinching. That's the look of a repeat offender.

"He's probably been getting by on this exact trick his whole career. And today of all days, the new president is supposed to be starting, and I heard he doesn't tolerate this kind of garbage. We can't let him see this filth walking around the office."

That was all it took. Ms. Barrymore's face went cold, and she gave me an order. "Enough talk. You're fired."

I kept my voice even. "Ms. Barrymore, firing an employee requires due process. This is my first day, and I haven't broken a single rule. What grounds do you have to let me go?"

"Grounds?" She laughed coldly. "Seducing a coworker, wrecking someone's marriage, a serious violation of section three of the employee handbook, creating a hostile work environment. Is that reason enough for you?

"Kid, I don't think you understand how the real world works. In this company, I decide who stays and who goes. I just told you you're out. Get moving."

I held her gaze and said each word slowly and clearly. "Is that right? Because I'm not someone you get to fire on a whim.

"I'm the new president headquarters sent to take over this branch. My name is Timothy Griffin."

"Victoria and Brett have both been arrested. The evidence of their embezzlement and their affair is out in the open now."You're not spineless. You didn't do anything wrong. The blame lies with them, with that whole rotten management team."Weston stared blankly at the stamped document, and for the first time, real feeling broke through the dead look in his eyes. The fingers holding his cigarette trembled slightly. He took the document, then abruptly turned his back to me, his shoulders drawn tight. He didn't cry out loud. He just wiped hard at his reddened eyes with the back of a rough hand, drew in a deep breath, swallowed down every ounce of resentment and injustice, and said, his voice hoarse but steady, "Mr. Griffin, thank you. I've been waiting a long time for this."I walked over and clapped him firmly on the shoulder.Over the next two days, I didn't rest. I combed through every rundown neighborhood and outlying district in the city.I found Joel Ellison, the designer,

My voice rang out, heavy with an authority that left no room for argument."They didn't do anything wrong! They were just working hard, trying to build a life for themselves in this city through their own effort. And for that, they got branded gigolos and pretty boys, driven into depression, forced to change careers, some of them even driven out of this city!"I turned around and fixed my burning gaze on the employees standing with their heads bowed."I just asked you a question. When you watched Brett bully these men, humiliate them in public, have security drag them out of the building, what were you doing?"You were watching the show. Going along with it. Stepping on their dignity to climb your way up and keep your own jobs safe."Doesn't your conscience bother you at all?"Faced with my questions, someone in the crowd finally broke. A few employees who had once worked alongside those men buried their faces in their hands, heads bowed in shame."Starting today, every policy a

Brett screamed and curled up on the floor, clutching his leg.Melanie had gone completely feral. She kept swinging the chair down on the two of them again and again, and the strength her fury unleashed was staggering.Ms. Barrymore was beaten bloody, and Brett's expensive suit was shredded to rags. The two of them crawled across the floor like dogs, trying to escape, their wails and pleas for mercy filling the room.Blood spattered across the carpet. The employees around us screamed and scattered out of the way, but not a single one stepped in to pull her off.I stood about two yards back, hands in my pockets, watching this dogfight of a spectacle with cold detachment. Watching them tear into each other, making complete fools of themselves, I didn't feel a shred of sympathy.Only once Ms. Barrymore was barely breathing and Brett was bleeding from the head did I finally give the security guards a look. As if snapping out of a trance, they rushed in, wrestled the raging Melanie dow

I pulled a tissue from the desk, wiped the blood off my lip without much care, and walked step by step toward Ms. Barrymore.I looked down at her, my eyes full of contempt."Vice President Barrymore, didn't you claim to be the chairman's niece?"I gave it some real thought back in that elevator. My father definitely doesn't have a relative like you. So which is it, would you like me to start calling you cousin, or would you rather explain your identity to the police down at the station?"Ms. Barrymore flinched so hard her whole body shook."Mr. Griffin! Mr. Griffin, I was wrong! I let greed cloud my judgment!"She flipped over, dropped to her knees, and started slamming her forehead against the floor over and over. "I'm sorry! Please, show mercy, and just let this go!""Let this go?" I laughed coldly.I turned to Preston and held out my hand. He understood at once and handed me a thick, heavy black folder.I swung it and slammed it straight into Ms. Barrymore's terrified face.

Preston's roar cracked through the office like thunder out of a clear sky.Dead silence fell. You could have heard a pin drop.Everyone froze in place, as if someone had hit pause on the whole room.Ms. Barrymore's fawning smile vanished instantly. Her whole body gave a violent shudder."P-Preston, what are you talking about?" She rushed toward him, sweat pouring down her face, her voice trembling as she made one last attempt to salvage the situation. "Mr. Griffin? There was a con man here earlier, but we've already...""Con man?!" Preston straightened up and seized her by the collar, yanking her off balance. He was normally a composed, meticulous man, but now his eyes were bloodshot, and his whole body shook with rage."Are you blind?! What you tore up and left scattered on this floor is the original document, stamped with the chairman's private seal! That was the highest-level transfer order headquarters could issue! I'll ask you one last time. Where is the president?!"The w

  • Undercover Boss Calls For Change   Chapter 4

Ms. Barrymore had run this branch for years, and it had long since become her own personal fiefdom. Everyone feared her "chairman's niece" status too much to cross her, and plenty were eager to use this moment to prove their loyalty.A handful of burly security guards, cowed by her authority, closed in on me like a pack of wolves. Two fists couldn't hold off that many hands. I managed to take two of them down, but in the end several big men clamped onto my arms, wrenched them behind my back, and pinned me face down over a desk. I couldn't move an inch.Brett hauled himself off the floor, still clutching his stomach, and stalked over to me with a savage look on his face. He drove his foot into the back of my knee, twice."Run now! Go on, kick me again!" he snarled through gritted teeth.Pinned against the desk, my spine locked straight, I stared coldly at Ms. Barrymore and Brett, memorizing every face in the room.Just as Brett was gearing up for another round, the young reception
