Chapter 5: Divorcé

last update Last Updated: 2026-01-18 21:47:00

Marcus was already out of bed before I woke up. The space beside me was cold and empty. He had left without a word, without a goodbye,

We never left things unsettled. Never. But now… he was gone. And for the first time in our marriage, I felt the weight as though evil eyes had fallen over us.

“Anna!”

I blinked, startled back into reality. Miss Martha, the senior designer, stood at the doorway of my office, her sharp eyes fixed on me.

“Anna, you came to work late today,” she said coldly. “And now your mind is wandering somewhere else.”

I sat up straighter, pressing my fingers to my temple as a headache throbbed behind my eyes.

“I’m sorry, Miss Martha. I didn’t hear you.”

She stepped inside, unimpressed. “You look like a funeral followed you to work, with your mood affecting your performance, I will keep rejecting your work cause it  Depressing.”

“That’s not true,” I said quietly. “My designs are good because I take my work seriously.”

“Whatever,” she waved it off. “Leave what you’re doing. You’ll accompany Jessie the head semi-stress to a fitting session for Michelle Campbell’s photo shoot.”

I stiffened. “Miss Martha, I came here to design, not to dress celebrities.”

“Yes, yes,” she replied sharply. “But we must crawl before we walk, Anna. So do as I say. And don’t talk back. Both of you don’t mess this up.” She walked away.

I stared at her retreating figure. This feels like a demotion, I thought bitterly. Maybe Gina was right after all.

Jessie and I waited at the magical studio with the dresses neatly arranged. When Michelle Campbell arrived, she walked in like royalty, red one-shoulder A-line dress, dark glasses, confidence spilling from every step. Her handbag alone could pay my salary for years.

The fitting took longer than expected. Michelle Campbell wouldn’t stop talking about our boss, Mr. Kings, about how good he fucked her in bed and how much she wanted to date him   I couldn’t help but feel sorry for my boss if he continued with women like her, his reputation would eventually suffer.

We watched Michelle pose gracefully under the flashing cameras, the dress clinging to her perfectly like it was made for only her. A few minutes later the shoot was over, and I hurried home

When I got home, I walked into the kitchen, picked up a glass from the rack, and went to the fridge for some water first to quench my thirst. I noticed a white envelope pinned to the refrigerator door, my name written neatly across it.

I frowned, trying to remember if it had been there since morning. Maybe I’d missed it in my rush. My heart fluttered with fragile hope. Maybe it was a love letter. An apology. Maybe Marcus had finally decided to explain.

My hands trembled as I opened it. My world stopped. The glass slipped from my fingers and shattered on the floor.

My body felt as though ice water had been poured through my veins. My eyes blurred as I read the words again and again, praying they would change.

It wasn’t a love letter.

It wasn’t an apology.

It was a divorce letter.

I covered my mouth to stop myself from screaming. Tears streamed freely as I stumbled into the living room, fumbling through my bag for my phone. My hands shook so badly that I emptied everything onto the floor just to find it.

When I finally dialed his number, it went straight to voicemail.

I called again and again.

Nothing.

“He can’t do this to me,” I whispered, shaking my head. “This has to be a joke… a mistake… a cruel prank.”

But the paper in my hand felt too real.

My tears wouldn’t stop. My chest ached. My body felt hollow.

I sank onto the living room floor, still clutching the letter, waiting for him to come home and explain everything.

I waited and waited. Until exhaustion finally pulled me into a broken, restless sleep.

The thought still lingered in my mind as I walked straight toward the hospital’s front desk. “Hello,” I said with a polite smile as I approached the receptionist. “I would like to see Doctor Juliet, please.” The woman looked up from her computer, her expression neutral. “Are you a registered patient here?” she asked. For a brief second, I hesitated, trying to think quickly. “Not exactly,” I admitted. “But she was the one attending to my friend.” The receptionist nodded slightly and began typing on her computer. The soft clicking of keys filled the quiet space. After a moment, she stopped and looked back at me. “I’m sorry,” she said. “Doctor Juliet’s shift is already over for today.” My heart sank a little. “Could you try calling her office line?” I asked quickly. “Maybe she hasn’t clocked out yet.” The receptionist shrugged lightly and picked up the telephone. She dialed a number and waited. A few seconds passed. Then she lowered the receiver. “No answer,” she said. “You

Daniela and I exchanged a glance before stepping inside.Behind a sleek white desk sat a woman in a fitted navy suit, her hair pulled back so tightly it seemed to stretch her patience with it. Her expression didn’t shift when we approached.“Good morning,” I began politely. “We’re from Sweet Body. We’re here to take Mr. Fourth’s measurements.”Her eyes moved slowly from me to Daniela and back again.“Did you book an appointment?” she asked flatly. Her tone was rude and indifferent.“Not personally,” I replied evenly. “But he’s expecting designers from Sweet Body. Could you please inform him that we’re here?”She stared at me for a second longer than necessary, as if weighing whether I deserved her effort. Then she picked up the telephone.“Hello, sir, Designers from Sweet Body are here,” she said into the receiver.A pause.“Yes.”Another pause. She hung up.“He’s in a meeting,” she said, gesturing lazily toward a waiting area with two fingers. “You can sit there.”No apology. The moment I stepped into the hallway, she folded her arms. “I heard you’ll be in charge of Mr. Fourth’s design.” “Yes,” I said. My voice came out softer than I intended. Sad. I still hadn’t told her about the video. If I did, she would panic. And right now, panic was the last thing I needed. The fitting room where Martha confronted me had been private. This hallway wasn’t. I glanced at my wristwatch to check the time. “It’s almost break,” I said quickly. “Let’s get something to eat.” Jessie studied me for a second. She knew me well enough to notice the shift. But she nodded. “Fine.” We stepped outside Sweet Body and began walking down the street “Why would she give you that assignment,” Jessie said, her tone tightening, “when she could’ve taken it to the older designers? And with Daniela? The new girl?” She talks while we give way to pedestrians. Silence. Our flats scrub against the pavement. “Anna,” she nudged. “Talk to me.” We walked a few blocks and entered a small

Anna's POV “Everyone, gather up.” Martha’s hands clapped sharply, the sound slicing through the design floor. Conversations died instantly. Designers straightened, chairs scraped lightly against the floor, and fabric rustled as everyone assembled around her. I stepped out of the restroom just in time, smoothing my expression before joining the group. My face felt composed again. No one needed to know what had just happened behind that locked door. Martha stood at the center like a general preparing to announce war. “We have an order,” she began, pacing slowly in front of us, heels clicking with authority. “A customized one.” She paused for effect. “It came from Mr. Albert Fourth. The CEO of Nexus,” A low murmur rippled through the room. “What about the fifth?” Daniela joked from the back. Laughter burst out. Everyone laughed except Martha. The sound died almost instantly when Martha’s head turned. She walked toward Daniela slowly, her expression blank, controlled. ”You’re
