Seattle – Washington
The sound of fists echoed through the abandoned warehouse—a place that would be a nightmare for anyone who crossed paths with Adam Donovan, a man feared by all who knew his reputation and understood what he was capable of doing to anyone who meddled in his business or dared to betray him.
Adam stood about six feet tall, with light brown eyes and jet-black hair, neatly trimmed on the sides and a bit longer on top. At thirty-two, his athletic build drew attention wherever he went. At that moment, he was settling a score with one of his subordinates who had thought he could deceive him—a nearly impossible feat, since Adam was notoriously distrustful. He placed his trust in very few people: his two brothers and two of his most loyal men.
Raised under his father’s strict rule, Adam grew up immersed in the world of organized crime, shaped to follow its ruthless standards. His mother, however, was a woman of warmth and compassion. She tried to teach him values that most men in that world dismissed as weakness—like never raising a hand against a woman or forcing her into his bed. In front of his father, Adam obeyed the harsh rules imposed upon him, but behind closed doors, he lived by his mother’s principles—a rare trait in such a dark world.
Adam took over one of the major American crime families at twenty-eight, after his parents died in a car accident—an event he had long suspected, though never proven, to be the work of the rival Duncan family.
He finished beating and torturing the man, leaving the final act to Caio. As Adam turned to leave the place, Caio fired, killing the already badly weakened man.
Adam walked out of the warehouse and headed to his car. He needed to change, as his shirt was stained with blood. He always kept a spare set of clothes in the car for situations like this; you never knew when they’d come in handy.
Caio approached Adam and asked what they’d do for the rest of the night, since it was getting late.
“You can take the rest of the night off, Caio,” Adam said. “Sabrina texted me—she’s waiting at the apartment I got her. Since it’s our anniversary, she says she’s got a surprise for me.”
“Alright,” Caio replied. “I’ll head back to your place. I don’t have any plans. Let me know if you need anything.”
“No lady friend to visit?” Adam asked with a grin.
“Nah, you know my life revolves around the organization, Adam. I swore my loyalty to your family, to you. I vowed my life would be about protecting you and your family. So, no time for romance—plus, it’s tricky in our line of work.”
Adam knew he was right. Sabrina was his girlfriend, but he had no intention of marrying her—not just because the council was against it, though their opinion didn’t weigh much on him, but because he’d already figured out Sabrina wasn’t quite what she seemed.
“Fair enough,” Adam said. “My phone’s about to die. When I get there, I’ll borrow a charger from Sabrina.”
Adam finished changing and got into the car. Caio said he’d drop him off at his girlfriend’s apartment before heading to Adam’s mansion. Adam agreed, and the two drove off. The mess back at the warehouse was left for the other guys to handle.
As he headed to the apartment, Adam started reflecting on his relationship with Sabrina. He’d met her at one of his nightclubs. The way she carried herself, with an apparent innocence and naivety, stood out in the chaos and cruelty of the world he lived in, making her instantly intriguing. Besides nightclubs, Adam owned hotels and restaurants, most of them fronts for laundering money from his illicit dealings.
The night they met, Sabrina refused to go somewhere else with him, saying she didn’t know him and didn’t sleep with anyone on the first date. After that, they met up a few more times and even went out to dinner. When she finally gave in to him, Sabrina seemed shy and embarrassed, which, for Adam—used to women who were just out for a good time—was charming.
A few months into their relationship, though, Adam noticed a shift in Sabrina. The innocence was gone. She started showing off a more exaggerated sensuality and treated his staff with arrogance, which deeply irritated him.
Caio snapped him out of his thoughts, announcing they’d arrived. Adam checked his gun and ammo before getting out of the car—he never went anywhere unarmed, even to Sabrina’s place. He climbed the stairs and rang the doorbell. Though he had a key to the apartment, he hadn’t brought it with him. Sabrina opened the door with a smile on her face.
“Come in, I’ve been waiting for you,” Sabrina said, inviting him inside.
Sabrina was a blonde, five-foot-three, with striking green eyes that seemed to glow. To everyone, she was a stunning, captivating woman who turned heads wherever she went.
“I thought you’d be waiting in that lingerie you sent me a picture of,” Adam said, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her closer.
“I figured it’d be better to wait for you without it,” Sabrina replied in a sultry tone.
She was wearing a silk robe. Taking Adam’s hand from her waist, she guided it to the opening of the robe, sliding it toward her skin, revealing she had nothing on underneath.
Caio was getting ready to head to his room when he received a message from Sophia:“I need you to come to my room. It’s urgent.”He picked up the pace. The word “urgent” sent all kinds of thoughts racing through his head—from her being in danger to her having gotten hurt. He reached her door quickly. He knocked, and she answered almost immediately. Sophia glanced both ways to make sure he was alone, pulled him inside, and locked the door.“What happened? What’s the emergency?” he asked, concerned.“This is the emergency,” Sophia replied, pulling him into a deep, intense kiss.Caio understood right away. He had been eager for this since the day they had gotten closer in the office. He wanted to repeat that moment, but he hadn’t found the right opportunity—and he didn’t have the same boldness she did.Their lips parted for a second. Caio scooped her up, making her wrap her legs around his waist, and carried her to the bed. He laid her down carefully and positioned himself on top, resumi
Samantha couldn’t hold back any longer and ended up bringing up the subject she had promised herself she wouldn’t mention.“You trusted Sabrina so much that you never even suspected she could do something like that.”Adam found her tone strange, but he answered anyway.“It’s not exactly like that. Things happened really fast, and we didn’t even consider that possibility. We got distracted, especially with everything that was going on with you.”“And would you forgive her if she wanted to come back to you?” Samantha asked, looking him straight in the eyes as she waited for his answer.Adam didn’t understand where these questions were coming from, but he continued answering honestly.“Why would I do that? She knew perfectly well that I don’t forgive betrayal. Besides, I already have you. What reason would I have to want her back?”He replied, holding her gaze and looking completely sincere. Samantha asked a few more questions but didn’t push the subject any further.“And how are your in
The three of them arrived at the store. At the entrance, Sophia asked the security guards to wait outside.“You can wait here. I don’t think anything’s going to happen inside, especially with Alice around.”They obeyed and stayed outside, keeping watch. Once inside, the three women began browsing the clothing racks, picking out a few pieces. Sophia headed to the fitting room to try on what she had selected.“I’m going to check out the dresses on the other side. I have a dinner tonight and I want to look stunning,” Alice said, clearly excited.“Like everything you wear doesn’t look amazing on you!” Samantha rolled her eyes.“But it wasn’t always like that… I’ll be right back. Stay alert,” Alice advised.Samantha noticed that Alice sounded a little off when she said “it wasn’t always like that.” It seemed like she had remembered something and gotten sad for a second. She took the opportunity to look at a few items herself, chose what she liked, and headed toward the fitting rooms. Adam finished his shower and, before Samantha stepped in for hers, said:“I’m going to get dressed and head downstairs. I want to get this bug situation sorted out quickly so I can relax and plan how to finish Oliver off.”“You haven’t eaten anything yet, Adam. The doctor said you need to eat because of the medication. Do you want to end up with gastritis or a stomach ulcer?”“Are you scolding me, babe?” he asked, stepping closer with a smile.“Yes, because you’re incredibly stubborn.”“I’ll take it from you… and I actually like seeing this bossy side of you,” Adam said, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her in for a kiss.“Go get dressed. Didn’t you say you were in a hurry?” she shot back, taking the chance to give another order.“Yes, ma’am,” he replied, giving her a playful salute with a grin. “I promise I’ll grab something to eat on the way. Is that good enough?”“It better be,” Samantha answered with a satisfied smile, happy he had given in.After saying goodbye, Samantha wen
When Andrew got back to the clinic, Pedro was still asleep. He didn’t want to wake him, so he stood quietly by the bed for a few minutes, just watching. Earlier, he had stopped by the infirmary to get a few scratches he’d picked up during the escape treated. As he stood there, his thoughts drifted to his brother’s situation with Samantha. All the dangers she had faced just by being with Adam, the desperation on her face when there was no news of him… Would it be better for Pedro to stay away from him? That way, he wouldn’t run the risk of going through the same thing his friend had.Lost in thought, Pedro woke up and saw him there. He immediately noticed the small scrape on Andrew’s face and grew worried. Samantha had already left looking roughed up, and he had only found out through the nurses.“What happened to you? Are you hurt?” Pedro asked, trying to move but wincing in pain.“Careful, you can’t move like that,” Andrew said, stepping closer.“Are you really not hurt?” Pedro looke
Samantha followed the two of them, curious to see up close what Alice was scheming. They headed to the property’s shooting range. There were two: one outdoor and one indoor. As expected, they chose the indoor one.The competitors started getting ready. Alice handed Samantha a pair of ear protectors and stepped into her lane. The rule was simple: whoever hit the center of the target the most times would win. Samantha had no doubt who would come out on top. Both loaded their magazines and began firing. After emptying their rounds, they pulled the targets back in. Just as Samantha had predicted, Alice won.“Pure luck,” Marcos grumbled. He hated losing—especially to her.“Alright, that really wasn’t fair to you. I’ll buy dinner,” Alice replied with a smile. That had been Alice’s plan from the start. She knew she would win, but she wanted to have dinner with him. If she invited him directly, she was sure Marcos would turn her down. Since he was extremely competitive, she came up with the b
Samantha couldn’t sit still. She paced back and forth across the room while Caio checked the final piece of information they needed before heading out to rescue Adam. Alice’s arm wound had already been treated, and even Marcos had helped with it—as a way of thanking her for saving him earlier. Now
The injured members of Adam’s team were sent to the clinic, while the others headed back to the mansion to start making arrangements for the rescue. They would have to check every possible one of Oliver’s hideouts, and they needed to do it in record time.Back at the clinic, after Samantha had help
Alice pressed the device, relaying the information to Adam and hoping it wasn’t too late.“Abort! Abort! It’s a trap—get the hell out of there as fast as you can!” she shouted. No response came from Adam. Since he wasn’t answering, she needed to grab her rifle and take out the other shooter so she
The next morning, when Samantha woke up, he wasn’t in bed or anywhere in the room. She did, however, notice a piece of paper on the nightstand. Adam had left her a note.“You were sleeping so peacefully that I didn’t want to wake you. See you later, babe. I love you.”Samantha stared at the note in
