Chloe waited for Ruan’s reaction when she ran outside, but nothing happened. When she realized she had been walking the hospital corridors for too long, she had to stop to catch her breath. Talking about Leônidas should no longer hurt or bother her. At that moment, she realized the wound remained open.

She curled up on the bench. The day seemed unwilling to end. She wanted to leave that place and forget everything that had happened, but the scars remained exposed. Losing her child still caused her pain. It still hurt to have married her sister’s ex-fiancé. It still hurt to remember Leônidas.

A tear slid down her face. She shouldn’t be crying. She should be facing Ruan, demanding a good explanation for going to the university to pay her tuition fees.

Her chest heaved, and her whole body trembled. She couldn’t control her feelings. She hadn’t felt so vulnerable in a long time.

“Chloe.”

The sound of that voice froze her in place. She turned slowly to make sure she hadn’t misheard or mist

Chloe’s feet froze in the middle of the street when a car screeched to a halt just inches from her. Grace screamed, grabbing Chloe and pulling her to safety. It felt as if Chloe feared those eyes more than the possibility of being hit and killed. She quickly hid the pregnancy test inside her purse when she saw the woman step out of the vehicle and approach her.“Why did you stop in the middle of the street, Chloe? You were this close to getting run over.”Grace kept talking, but the only sound Chloe heard was Josephine’s footsteps coming toward her. Her black eyes and hair pinned into a bun above her head gave her a darker, more sinister look. Chloe usually didn’t fear her stepmother, but now she was terrified.“Dear Chloe,” a sinister smile spread across her lips, “I saw you leaving the pharmacy. Are you sick?”Chloe clutched Grace’s arm as a warning to keep her mouth shut and not say a single word about it. Grace looked at Chloe and remembered the episode at the hospital, when Josep

Chloe didn’t sleep that night. Locked in the guest room, she stared at the white ceiling while her tears constantly blurred her vision. Her heart bled, and she couldn’t stop the bleeding. Even breathing felt hard when Ruan’s face appeared in her thoughts. The worst mistake of her life was falling in love with her brother-in-law. She was unable to stop seeing Ruan that way. He still belonged to Megan, and Chloe couldn’t bear being her half-sister’s substitute fiancée any longer. She saw the first rays of Phoenix’s morning sun slip through the cracks in the curtains. She stood up, drowsy, knowing she needed to get ready to seek employment. With her diploma finally in hand, she needed work so she could free herself from that marriage once and for all.She took a quick shower, put on her best clothes, and walked downstairs. A familiar voice echoed through the rooms, and she recognized it immediately. Her feet froze.“You shouldn’t have left Chloe alone,” Grace’s tone carried a threatening

The sound of Ruan’s voice grew louder when he crossed the front door of the house. He grumbled impatiently, treating the entire episode as if it were completely absurd.“You still haven’t given me an explanation,” his heated voice rose close to Chloe’s face. “What were you doing in the car with your ex-boyfriend?”Chloe turned to face him, wrapping her arms around herself.“Would you leave Megan alone on her graduation day?” The words slipped out before Chloe could stop them.Ruan’s expression hardened. Hearing Megan’s name still hurt, and Chloe noticed it.“You shouldn’t mention that name; we’ve already talked about this.” His words struck Chloe almost like a physical blow. She regretted it instantly. “You should have called me; I would have picked you up.”“You wouldn’t have done that.” A bitter smile slipped from Chloe’s lips. “You were there, exchanged a couple of words with me, and left. You wouldn’t have come back to help me.”“And that’s why you ran into your ex-boyfriend’s arm

Chloe called a rideshare vehicle and headed toward the campus. She took a deep breath, trying to contain the sadness inside her, while the car drove toward her dream. She couldn’t feel angry at Ruan for not being present. He had paid for her college and supported her for that entire year while she remained unemployed. After the episode with Arnold, the scandal spread among corporations, and every door closed on Chloe. Ruan tried to get her another job, but not even the company where he worked wanted her among their employees.Rejected by her husband, by her family, and now by the business world. At least Chloe hoped she would be lucky as a teacher. Her eyes sparkled when she thought about it. Working with children had always been her dream, and she was ready to make it come true. When the car dropped her off in front of the campus, she saw the lights flashing as the graduates arrived accompanied by their families. Chloe was the only one standing alone. She pulled her phone out of her

“You are truly a gift to this family,” Margot’s voice, Chloe’s mother-in-law, echoed through the house. “You are the perfect woman to give Ruan the child he needs.”The smile on Chloe’s face slowly faded. It had already been a year since they married, and after she lost their first child, she never managed to conceive again. Time had passed too quickly, so quickly that sometimes Chloe felt as if she were running against it.At that moment, Chloe turned to her, as if she had just noticed her, standing up from the chair and adjusting her skirt with sweaty hands. She looked around, making sure the servants weren’t nearby to hear her say it.“The doctor said I can’t have children anymore.”Margot’s eyes widened with sadness, and she let out a heavy sigh.“He could be wrong,” she forced a smile, trying to encourage her. “You should seek a second diagnosis and, if possible, undergo fertility treatment.”Chloe shook her head. The pressure to have a child had never come between them. Ruan had
