“How did Leonidas have the courage to come here?”
Chloe heard Grace’s question as soon as she approached the room. Ruan told her about Leonidas. For a man who had been silent for months, he was talking more than he should.
Chloe pushed the door open, and silence revisited her. As her eyes scanned the room, she noticed that someone had arranged her things neatly. She turned her gaze to Ruan, but he turned his head away, blocking any chance of Chloe understanding his intentions.
“I thought I would stay a few more days at the hospital.”
“The doctor already discharged you; there’s no reason to stay.”
Chloe didn’t feel even slightly excited to go back home. Spending most of the time alone in that small apartment was always lonely. When Ruan arrived, he locked himself in his room and only came out the next day to go to work. It had been like this for two months, and Chloe doubted anything would change
The sound of Ruan’s voice grew louder when he crossed the front door of the house. He grumbled impatiently, treating the entire episode as if it were completely absurd.“You still haven’t given me an explanation,” his heated voice rose close to Chloe’s face. “What were you doing in the car with your ex-boyfriend?”Chloe turned to face him, wrapping her arms around herself.“Would you leave Megan alone on her graduation day?” The words slipped out before Chloe could stop them.Ruan’s expression hardened. Hearing Megan’s name still hurt, and Chloe noticed it.“You shouldn’t mention that name; we’ve already talked about this.” His words struck Chloe almost like a physical blow. She regretted it instantly. “You should have called me; I would have picked you up.”“You wouldn’t have done that.” A bitter smile slipped from Chloe’s lips. “You were there, exchanged a couple of words with me, and left. You wouldn’t have come back to help me.”“And that’s why you ran into your ex-boyfriend’s arm

Chloe called a rideshare vehicle and headed toward the campus. She took a deep breath, trying to contain the sadness inside her, while the car drove toward her dream. She couldn’t feel angry at Ruan for not being present. He had paid for her college and supported her for that entire year while she remained unemployed. After the episode with Arnold, the scandal spread among corporations, and every door closed on Chloe. Ruan tried to get her another job, but not even the company where he worked wanted her among their employees.Rejected by her husband, by her family, and now by the business world. At least Chloe hoped she would be lucky as a teacher. Her eyes sparkled when she thought about it. Working with children had always been her dream, and she was ready to make it come true. When the car dropped her off in front of the campus, she saw the lights flashing as the graduates arrived accompanied by their families. Chloe was the only one standing alone. She pulled her phone out of her
“You are truly a gift to this family,” Margot’s voice, Chloe’s mother-in-law, echoed through the house. “You are the perfect woman to give Ruan the child he needs.”The smile on Chloe’s face slowly faded. It had already been a year since they married, and after she lost their first child, she never managed to conceive again. Time had passed too quickly, so quickly that sometimes Chloe felt as if she were running against it.At that moment, Chloe turned to her, as if she had just noticed her, standing up from the chair and adjusting her skirt with sweaty hands. She looked around, making sure the servants weren’t nearby to hear her say it.“The doctor said I can’t have children anymore.”Margot’s eyes widened with sadness, and she let out a heavy sigh.“He could be wrong,” she forced a smile, trying to encourage her. “You should seek a second diagnosis and, if possible, undergo fertility treatment.”Chloe shook her head. The pressure to have a child had never come between them. Ruan had
Chloe was about to speak after hours of awkward silence. Her thoughts wouldn’t let her rest. She was unemployed once again. Ruan, inconsolable, left the room with trembling breaths. He returned a few minutes later with a suitcase in his hand and placed it in the middle of the living room. Chloe’s eyes examined the object and concluded that it was her suitcase. Her heart jumped, pounding against her ribs. What exactly did that mean?Ruan came back shortly after with another suitcase, one Chloe didn’t recognize. A shiver ran down her spine as she imagined what could happen.“What does this mean?” She bit her lips, knowing she wouldn’t like the answer at all.“We’re moving.” A deadly silence followed.Chloe stood still, watching Ruan pack things without understanding what could happen. She shifted uncomfortably, her feet restless, while she cleared her throat. Was Ruan also getting rid of her?“You haven’t explained what this means.” A knot formed in Chloe’s throat, and she could barely
Frustration tormented Chloe as soon as she walked into the apartment. Just a few hours ago, everything seemed perfectly fine. Ruan had been closer and appeared willing to make that marriage something real. She cursed under her breath as soon as he crossed the door. She paced through the living room, moving away from him, her mind racing. When Ruan grabbed her by the waist and pulled her close, pressing his lips against hers, Chloe pushed him away immediately.“No.” Her heart pounded wildly, images of the last two months flickering in her eyes. “I need to rest.”The argument wasn’t over. Ruan had said things Chloe didn’t need to hear. She couldn’t just shove everything to the back of her mind and go on as if nothing was happening. Chloe feared getting too involved with Ruan and being abandoned the same way Leonidas had abandoned her.If Megan came back, that would certainly happen.A surge of anger passed through Ruan as he stepped back and let her go.A knot twisted in her stomach whe
