Two weeks passed. Two long weeks where time seemed suspended between hope and despair. Mia lay in the pristine white hospital bed, machines humming steadily beside her, while Darren never once left her side. He slept on the couch, worked from his laptop in the corner, and spent his nights holding her hand as though his touch alone would tether her to life.

And then, one quiet morning, her eyelashes fluttered. Her fingers twitched against his palm. Darren’s head shot up, his heart pounding, and when her soft eyes finally blinked open, relief washed over him like a storm breaking into sunlight.

“Mia,” he breathed, his voice shaking for the first time in years.

She turned her head weakly, her lips parting. “Darren…?”

In that moment, everything else, the revenge, the power, the anger melted away. He pulled her gently into his arms, careful of her frailty, and let his tears fall freely against her hair. “You’re awake. You’re really awake.”

Jenny, who had been dozing by the bedside, woke to

EPILOGUE. A year later…The Preston mansion glowed with golden light as evening settled over the city. The garden, once a silent witness to Darren’s solitary life, now echoed with laughter. Mia’s laughter. She sat on the bench beneath the blossoming magnolia tree, a soft hand resting on the gentle curve of her stomach. Her cheeks glowed with the unmistakable radiance of motherhood.“Careful,” Darren murmured, crouching beside her, his hand covering hers protectively. “You shouldn’t be sitting out in the evening chill.”Mia smiled, her eyes sparkling. “You’re still overprotective. I’m fine, Darren. The doctor said short walks are good for me.”“Walks, yes,” he muttered, brushing stray hair from her face. “But sitting here while the wind blows? No. You’ll catch a cold. And our child will blame me for not taking care of you.”She giggled softly, leaning into his touch. “Our child will know their father is a worrier. Just like he’s always been since the day we met.”Darren’s heart swelle

The news of Mia’s accident spread like wildfire. By the next morning, whispers carried through every floor of Preston Group, through the streets, and into the homes of those who had watched the Thompsons and Prestons for years. Jenny, Mia’s closest friend, hadn’t left her side once. Whenever Darren was out meeting police officers or lawyers, Jenny remained planted in that hospital chair, holding Mia’s hand, brushing back her hair, whispering encouragement into ears that might not even hear her.The entire office staff was shaken. Messages poured in from colleagues who wanted to visit, but none could pass through the layers of security Darren had stationed around Mia’s room. Armed guards stood at every corner, their gazes sharp, their presence unyielding. No one would get close to her again not while Darren was still breathing. In the boardrooms of Preston, in the lobbies of competitors, in the buzzing feeds of social media, the story took root: Mia Thompson, wife of Darren Edwards, vi

The hospital room was silent except for the steady beeping of the machines that kept Mia tethered between life and death. Darren sat slumped in the chair beside her bed, his fingers laced tightly through hers. His eyes were bloodshot from sleepless nights, but they never left her face. Her pale cheeks, the faint bruise near her temple, the fragile rise and fall of her chest each detail seared into his heart like a brand. He bent forward, resting his forehead against her hand. His voice was low, cracked with emotion.“You hear me, Mia? You’re not leaving me. You’re not leaving us. I’ve lost too much already. I can’t… I won’t lose you.”The memory of the doctor’s words echoed in his skull like a hammer. Pregnant… miscarriage… critical condition. Rage surged through him again, hot and uncontrollable, but he forced it down. Not now. Not here. He couldn’t let her feel his fury when she needed his strength.“Hold on, my love,” he whispered, brushing his lips against her knuckles. “Just a l

The sterile brightness of the hospital corridor could not soften the blow that came with the doctor’s words. Darren stood like stone, fists curled tightly at his sides, his entire body trembling as the doctor spoke gently, almost regretfully.“I’m sorry, Mr. Edwards… or rather, Mr. Preston,” the doctor corrected softly, lowering his eyes. “Your wife… she was pregnant. The accident… it caused a miscarriage. I’m afraid the child is gone.”For a moment, Darren couldn’t breathe. The words hung in the air, choking him. His vision blurred, not from tears but from the fire igniting in his chest. Pregnant. His Mia. Their child. Gone. The doctor went on about blood loss, about stabilizing her condition, about survival rates, but Darren heard nothing. All he saw was Mia’s pale face through the glass window, unconscious and broken. All he felt was the hollow weight in his chest where hope had been. His jaw tightened, his voice raw as he forced out words. “They’ll pay for this.” His hand slammed

In the Thompson estate, laughter bubbled like champagne. Eva twirled in the center of the living room, her silk dress catching the dim light, while her mother reclined with a satisfied smirk.“It worked,” Eva announced gleefully, her voice laced with triumph. “Mia’s lying in a hospital bed right now. Did you hear, Mother? That truck nearly flattened her. She won’t crawl out of this one so easily.”Mrs. Thompson swirled the red wine in her glass, her expression less animated. “Don’t celebrate too loudly, Eva. Accidents can turn. People survive things they shouldn’t. Don’t underestimate her luck.”Eva scoffed, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “Luck runs out eventually. And Mia’s has. By the time she wakes up, if she even does her precious reputation will already be shredded. And Darren?” Her lips curled in disdain. “He’ll have no choice but to watch it all crumble.”Mrs. Thompson set down her glass, her eyes gleaming coldly. “Just remember, Eva… nothing is certain until the body
