Amelia's POV

The cheek widened, the smile on his face was sincere and comforting. "That's so good. I am capable of being an effective kitchen assistant, no worries."

I was taught to chop vegetables by him, and he would occasionally tease me when my cuts were uneven.

I chuckled with ease, which is something I rarely do. “I'm not good at this. It was quite an effortless move.”

With a smile on his face, Xavier replied with resolute agreement. "No. You're amazing, because you're trying. That's what matters."

Upon finishing the dinner meal with a basic soup and toast, we all settled down together in front of the dining table. Although not flawless, the dish had a distinct fla

Amelia's POVXavier gave a nod. "I won’t rush you. We proceed according to your speed."“But," I inhaled deeply, preparing for a choice "I’m also unwilling to quit.”There was a pause.A meaningful one. Then he replied, "I’ll go with you wherever you allow me to, Amelia.”I wished to smile. I wished to embrace him. I desired something, than words.Once finished we settled next, to each other on the balcony observing the afternoon sky shift its hues. The wind brought a scent of the ocean bringing back memories of last night.“Today seems like a start," I remarked.“Simply because it is," he answered, reclining in his seat.“Don’t you feel frightened?" I abruptly inquired. He rotated gradually. "Afraid of w

Amelia's POVXavier expressed it without any hesitation. As though everyone accepted that his role was to try to bring a smile to my face.I cast my eyes downward. Softly said, "You did it.”We dined silently. Occasionally our gazes locked. Neither of us flinched or averted our eyes. A fresh sense of ease existed between us.After I was done I grabbed my plate to carry it over to the sink.“Forget it," he said. "I’ll do the washing.”I cocked my head. "Are you attempting to make me fall for you that quickly?”He glanced at me.Seriously.“Certainly I am," he answered, completely serious. My legs almost buckled.I placed the plate gently. Moved a short step nearer. Then one more.“I can assist with the

Amelia's POVXavier shows up in my mind each time I open my eyes.He resides in every nook of my thoughts. He remained while all others departed.“I realize I want to attempt to love you," at last gathered the courage to say the phrase that had been revolving in my mind. "Clearly. For the reasons.”Xavier shut his eyes as though my words had reached the vulnerable part of him.The time he looked at me his eyes held a completeness no longer fear, but trust.“That’s sufficient," he said. "Far more than sufficient.”He extended his hand towards mine.I might have withdrawn. I might have requested time.I let the contact happen. I clasped his hand in return.Time slipped into hours. The outside world grew more silent. I let out a yawn, a

Amelia's POVOur dwelling our dwelling that surprisingly felt intimate enough to call unreal welcomed us with a completely different kind of silence.I slipped off my shoes while he was hanging his jacket. I turned quickly. He kept looking at me.Not looking like a counterfeit spouse. Not the way a man playing a role looks. The look, on a mans face when he hears news he never thought could happen.Following that he proceeded toward me.Not pushing. Not demanding.Just approaching.Until I caught myself raising my chin to keep meeting his eyes.“Amelia," he said softly. His tone was, like that of a person trying to evade flames but unable to withstand their attraction.“Hm?” my voice was barely there.“May I hold you?”A simple question. It felt as if I had abruptly found myself in a place I had never been before and I was uncertain, about how much time had gone by.I could have declined. I could have said I needed time. I could have protected myself as I usually did. However this even

Amelia's POVI confessed it. Not to him. Also, to myself.I wished to attempt. I wished to discover where this might lead. I wished to mend what was once make-believe.Not out of obligation. Not due, to an agreement.. Because“I wish to be wed to you " I murmured, "not due to duty. Not, for motives”I raised my face gradually locking eyes with him.“Since I’m beginning to desire it.”Time came to a halt.Perhaps it was merely my body that halted. For the words I had just uttered emerged gentle, sincere and unchangeable.. When my gaze met Xavier’s something, in his eyes shattered—something he had been clutching firmly: hope.He gulped, as though confirming he wasn’t imagining things.“Amelia,” his voice was rough.

Amelia's POVI became paralyzed. My mouth quivered.“Yes.”The moment that word escaped my lips it seemed as if a barrier, within me broke down. Not broken—unlocked.I breathed out as though my bravery was flowing away, with that sigh.“Perhaps I ought to quit deceiving myself " I repeated. "Regarding what I’ve begun to sense.”Xavier gazed at me intently. So intently it seemed as if he was peering through every layer I possessed. Then he uttered words that caused my heart to pause momentarily.“Amelia, It’s been some time since I saw this marriage as anything but real.”I remained motionless. He scratched the nape of his neck uneasy, in a manner I seldom observed in him. Even his breaths came out heavy—not furious, but since
