Chapter 2

Author: Angelica1
Henry's glower faded, replaced by a tender smile as he answered without hesitation, "Okay!"

With that, he turned and hurried out of the villa, choosing the daughter he had with Linda—abandoning Tina and Sophie once again.

Tina stood where she was, her heart breaking as her arms tightened around the urn containing Sophie's ashes.

She then gently patted it, like a quiet gesture to comfort her daughter.

Ever since Linda returned from abroad with her daughter, Henry had given them his absolute undivided attention.

It did not matter what time it was or what he was doing—he would be there with just a phone call.

And while Tina had no issue with abandonment, her heart ached for Sophie.

She was so sweet and kind, only for her father to hurt her time and time again!

Fortunately, this would be the last.

It would never happen again!

-

In the VIP ward of Jadelight Hospital, Linda was coaxing her daughter Rory.

Then, watching as Henry entered, she exclaimed in surprise, "What are you doing here, Henry? You said you were taking Sophie to the amusement park for missing her birthday…"

Realizing with a start, she then turned a stern glare on her own daughter as she lay on the sickbed. "Did you call Daddy behind my back again?"

"Daddy…"

Rory simply threw her little hands around Henry as she got near, looking up with tears in her eyes as she pouted. "The hospital is scary."

Henry hugged her gently in turn, patting her back gently as he told Linda, "She's only five—it's normal if she's afraid of the hospital. I'll stay here with her for the day… As for Sophie, there's always next time."

His words reminded Linda of her daughter's illness, and she could not bear to snap at her daughter.

Patting Rory's little cheek dotingly, she turned to Henry with a look of gratitude.

Tears welled up in her eyes, and Linda choked through tears, "Bless you for being here for Rory, or she wouldn't have found a kidney donor. If not for you…"

"She'll be fine, as long as I'm around," Henry promised tenderly.

"You're the best…."

Linda leaned on him, and he patted her back reassuringly.

Still, he stood up just as she was about to wrap her arms around his waist, saying, "I need to talk to the doctors about Rory's condition. Take her downstairs—I'll catch up."

"Okay, Daddy. Please hurry up," Rory said sweetly as he strode out of the room and into the elevator.

Just as the elevator doors closed, the doors of the next elevator opened, and Tina hurried outside, heading straight to the office of Sophie's attending physician.

A nurse promptly strode in her way. "You can't go in, Ms. Smith—"

Tina ignored her and barged inside, striding up to Dr. Ferguson as she pleaded, "Please tell me, doctor… who was the recipient?"

If that kidney had not been stolen out of the blue, Sophie would still be alive!

As Dr. Ferguson remained silent, she suddenly dropped to her knees. "Please, I'm begging you…"

She would do anything as long as she got an answer!

Dr. Ferguson scrambled to his feet to pull Tina up, exclaiming earnestly, "Please, Ms. Smith! I really don't know who it was!"

He sighed audibly, seeing how much weight Tina had lost in a matter of days.

Compassionate like most doctors, he sympathized with her too—when Sophie finally had a donor match, someone stole it even before they could operate on her.

That was how Sophie ended up dead on the operating table, a sweet girl lost just like that.

As her mother, Tina would definitely be overwhelmed, but Dr. Ferguson did not have an answer either.

All he heard was that some bigwig's daughter happened to be a match too, and Dr. Ferguson would never dare to breathe a word on that.

Denied even a hint, Tina left the office somberly.

When she arrived downstairs, a tiny figure shot toward her like a cannonball.

Tina reached down to catch her in reflex, but even before she reached the girl, someone smacked her hand away violently.

At the same time, Tina heard the familiar voice of another woman. "Don't hurt my daughter!"

It was Linda.

And as Tina withdrew her hand, Linda hugged Rory protectively while holding Tina's gaze, choking as if on the verge of tears, "Come at me if you have a problem. Rory is just a child—don't take it out on her!"

Yet another staged act.

Tina's lips curled into a sneer—she did not even have to look to know that Henry must be near.

And to no surprise, as soon as Linda finished, Henry snapped coldly from behind, "What's gotten into you this time, Tina?"

As Henry strode over, he protectively shielded Linda and Rory behind himself, glaring icily at Tina in warning.

The sight of him going all out to protect Linda and Rory stung Tina in the heart, and she clenched her knuckles. But as she was still dejected from Dr. Ferguson's denial, she did not want more trouble.

Just as she was about to turn and leave, however, Rory hugged Henry's leg, looking up at him and pouting unhappily. "Is Sophie upset because Daddy celebrated my birthday, and not hers? Is that why Tina is upset too? It's all my fault…"

Tina's visage turned cool—that reminded her of the time when Sophie first met Rory.

Rory had fallen into the pool and was saved as Henry rushed to the scene in the nick of time.

It was the same apology back then, too. "Did I make you upset, Sophie? I'm sorry, it's all my fault…"

'It's all my fault'.

Though clearly an apology, it was also a thinly veiled accusation that Sophie had pushed her.

Henry exploded back then, refusing to listen to Sophie at all and snapping at her viciously, after which he made her stand outside the house to reflect on her mistake.

The punishment lasted hours, but Henry did not seem to care.

When Sophie got home, she fell sick right away with a burning fever that lasted three days and nights.

Then, when she finally woke up, she was crying so hard that she was convulsing!

"Mommy, I never pushed Rory," she said. "She pushed me and fell into the pool herself… It really wasn't me!"

"It's alright, baby! I believe you!"

Tina had hugged her as she comforted her endlessly, but Sophie's tears would not stop.

"Then why wouldn't Daddy believe me?"

That was what hurt Sophie the most—her beloved father doubting her.

Even now, Tina's eyes narrowed coolly as she stared at Rory.

"Oh, no!"

As Rory promptly started bawling, Linda appeared heartbroken and strode between her and Tina to stop Tina from glaring. "I told you! Come at me if you have a problem—"

Smack! Smack! Smack!

Tina did just as Linda asked, slapping her repeatedly!

In the villa, Henry was looking outside the gates, and he could see that Rory was really sick—very seriously at that. That was why they should have gone to the hospital instead of coming here.Earlier, when he got a call from Andy reporting that Linda and Rory had visited Zach in prison after they left, he quickly went there again to see Zach. And this time, Zach refused to see Henry no matter what he offered, and Henry immediately knew that Linda had once again persuaded Zach to take her side, using Rory as a bargaining chip.Even now, as the mother and daughter pair were tearfully begging outside the villa gates, it was all just an act in Henry's eyes.He knew very well why they had done it too—they were convinced he still cared about Rory and wanted him to change his mind about her.Henry's lips curled up into a cold smile at the thought. This time, he would not even answer them. It's not as if he could not tell that Rory would really die if this went on, but what did her fa

Linda snapped right then, "Get back in there."Left terrified by Linda's threatening glare, Rory promptly returned under the cold shower. Rory was devastated. How could Henry bear to let her live in a place like this? Her face paled when her call was cut off, with the notification saying that her number had been blocked.Linda watched coolly as Rory hung up and turned gingerly toward her. "Mommy…"She was absolutely terrified. If Henry had really left her, then Linda would do the same…Still, Linda held Rory's gaze for a while and asked coolly, "Do you still want your daddy to love you?""Yes!" Rory nodded repeatedly—she could not stand living in this rental, let alone the fact that Linda would never smile at her again if Henry was really gone.Kneeling by Linda's feet, Rory looked up at her as she asked, "Mommy, can you tell me what I should do to change Daddy's mind?""What do you think?" Linda asked in return.Rory quickly realized and was a little afraid. "But the doctor said I must never get sick…"The doctor had made it clear to her parents that she must never get sick now, or it would cause an infectio

Even after the elevator doors closed, Tina did not snap at Jimmy.Having known each other for years, they were also the ones who knew each other best—so Tina could tell that Jimmy thought it would be a real waste to not accept those gifts. Moreover, Tina had to stay with Henry for five years without being given anything, and he kept hurting her through it all.Jimmy had always felt indignant for her, and that Henry could give her all his fortune for that."Never waste money." Jimmy grinned as he passed the deeds to Tina. She took everything—she was not about to reject everything anyway. As Jimmy had put it, there was no reason to refuse money given freely.Still, Mrs. Smith felt a little worried and whispered to John, "Please don't misunderstand. Tina is only accepting the gifts—she isn't planning to forgive Henry."John smiled, shaking his head. "It's alright. Tina deserves all those things in the first place."Relieved, Mrs. Smith headed inside the apartment with John, when

However, Mrs. Smith was not turning toward Henry, instead calling out, "Jimmy?"She certainly would not forget about her godson, who was closer to Tina than actual siblings despite not being related by blood."Yes, Mrs. Smith?" Jimmy replied crisply. As he walked past Henry, he stopped and shoved a couple of ten dollar bills into Henry's pocket. "Your fare."Once he did, he skipped toward Mrs. Smith and the others, happily going inside together, leaving Henry alone out in the cold. And he stood there, motionless for a long while.Still, Tina noticed that the hallway was clean and the elevator smelled brand new, though it had been a while since she returned. It was not Jimmy's first time there either, and he exclaimed when he took notice, "Huh. So the management found their conscience?"Tina never answered, as her instincts told her it was Henry. In fact, she was right.Henry knew she would not remain in John's apartment once Mrs. Smith got discharged, and that meant she would

As Henry stared at Tina in the backseat from the rearview mirror, his heart swelled with bitterness to see that she was not looking at him at all.Nonetheless, he drove steadily to Maple Park. When they arrived downstairs at Tina's apartment, he noticed a towering figure leaning against his car.Seeing Henry's car, John hurried over, while Mrs. Smith was beaming at him.Tina did as she suggested, texting John on the way here. And John promptly drove over—he could just work overtime to deal with any work he had put off. That was simply how important Tina was to him.Opening the back door and helping Mrs. Smith out of the car, he then turned to Henry. "Why, Mr. Barnes—thank you for chauffeuring Tina and Mrs. Smith all the way home."Henry was just getting out of the car and was left glowering at John for firing the first shot. Before he could retort, Mrs. Smith turned and beamed. "Thanks for coming to pick us up, John."She had been affectionate toward Henry like that too, back

Tina did not even look Henry's way as she held Mrs. Smith's hand and started outside.Henry quickly followed—he was mentally prepared for the silent treatment, but this was important and he had to be here to receive Mrs. Smith when she was getting discharged. He trailed behind the trio, tactfully staying in the furthest corner when they got into the elevator.Mrs. Smith could see his towering reflection from the mirror on the doors and sighed inwardly. Those were mistakes that could never be forgiven, just as Sophie's death was an insurmountable rift between Henry and Tina. When they arrived at the basement and reached Tina's car, she was about to help Mrs. Smith get in when she realized her tires were flat. But why? They were just fine when she arrived….That was when Henry saw it and strode up. "I can send everyone home, Tina.""You're crazy!" As long as Zach did not give Henry any proof, Linda's advantage was absolute. As she shot Rory a look, Rory did as she instructed and threatened Zach, "Daddy, if you give Henry the evidence, I'll never forgive you."I love Mommy and don't want anything to happen to her, and I'll die if anything happens to her.""And I'm not kidding, Daddy. Remember, my fate is the same as Mommy's—she gave me life, and I won't live if she's not by my side."Zach's hand was shaking even as he held the telephone receiver.Rory was only seven, but she could talk about death so lightly and threaten him with her own life. Why did she love Linda so much after everything Linda did to her?! The warden nodded at Zach. "Yes. Now clean yourself up, and then come with me."The other inmates did not know who Zach had met earlier, but were now all happy for him to hear that his daughter had come.He had been constantly talking about her—how adorable she was, how good her grades were, and he was even calling her name in his sleep. As such, they all knew how much he treasured her and urged him to hurry.Still, Zach meticulously groomed his hair and even washed his face to look clean and spirited, and only then did he follow the warden.Soon, he found both Linda and Rory standing there in the non-contact visit room.By now, any lingering affection he felt for Linda had dissipated after she used him like a tool repeatedly. As it was not visitation hours, only Zach, Linda, and Rory were in there. As soon as she sat down and picked up the telephone, Linda did the same on the other end and promptly asked, "Did Henry come to ask you for evidence? Did you give it to him?"Zach
