Unfulfilled Promises
Penulis: Wild Wheat

Chapter 1

Penulis: Wild Wheat
I had known Adrian Foster for eight years and had been married to him for six when I finally got what I’d longed for: a child.

Then, I learned that he already had a two-year-old son with a famous actress, Chloe Shaw.

Did that mean all the years of sweet memories between us had been nothing but a lie?

I had no idea how long I sat outside, lost and hollow, until a sudden downpour jolted me awake. Soaked through, I stumbled into a nearby mall for shelter.

There she was—Chloe Shaw. Her giant advertisements covered every wall, her arrogant half-smile mocking me, taunting my naivety.

Back when Adrian and I got engaged, rumors swirled that the bride-to-be joining the Foster family empire was none other than Chloe.

However, Adrian had scoffed at the idea. "Lauren Hayes, don’t listen to that nonsense. A little starlet could never step foot into our family."

He’d held me close, his gaze unwavering. "You’ll be the only wife I’ll ever have."

He’d called it protection when he insisted our wedding be small, stripped of guests and ceremony. "The Foster name draws too many enemies in business. For your safety, it has to be simple. One day, I’ll make it up to you with the grandest wedding the world has ever seen."

Even our marriage certificate had been handled quietly by his assistant.

Now, the doctor’s words and the nurse’s gossip pounded in my ears like nails. A terrifying suspicion clawed its way into my chest.

I carried that dread to a lawyer we’d worked with for years. My voice trembled as I asked him to verify the marriage certificate.

He checked again and again. His expression tightened with unease. "Ms. Hayes, I’m afraid your marriage certificate is a forgery."

His words crushed the last of my breath.

"From what I know, Mr. Foster’s legal wife is Ms. Shaw. They registered their marriage in Rosemont six years ago. Divorce isn’t possible there. That alone proves how strong their bond must be."

My mind flashed back to the month Adrian had been away "on business" in Rosemont. When he returned, he had surprised me with my favorite dark chocolate. "I missed you so much, Lauren. Next time, I’ll take you to Rosemont myself and buy you the whole chocolate shop if you want."

So that had been their honeymoon.

He never fulfilled his promises to me. On the other hand, he and Chloe already had a son over two years old.

Cold numbness consumed me. I was a joke. A fool. I couldn’t even remember how I made it home.

As I passed the study, I froze at the sound of my name.

Adrian’s mother spoke hesitantly, "Lauren has been in this family for over six years, always dutiful. You not only married Chloe in secret, but now you want to bring her child here for Lauren to raise? Isn’t that going too far?"

Adrian’s voice was low and resolute. "From beginning to end, the only one I’ve ever loved is Chloe. That’s something we’ve all known deep down. If it weren’t for our family needing the Hayes family… forget it. Anyway, I’ve treated Lauren well enough these past few years.

"Lauren is gentle and sensible. If I tell her the boy is adopted, she won’t suspect a thing.

"Besides, Mom, that boy carries Foster blood. He’s the future heir of the Foster Group. Would you really let him grow up outside?

"I’ve made up my mind. No matter who opposes me, I’m bringing Chloe’s son home. I’ll raise him myself."

My legs gave out, and I stumbled back to my room, collapsing onto the floor.

My hand moved instinctively to my belly, to the small life growing inside me, unwanted, unloved. That morning, I’d been so full of joy before the doctor’s visit. I had never imagined my life could crumble in just one day.

Tears streamed endlessly, unstoppable.

Our bedroom was filled with memories: photos Adrian had taken of me and portraits I’d sketched of him. Every single one now revealed itself as part of the elaborate trap he’d woven for me.

What was there left to hold on to?

Footsteps echoed outside. Panic surged. I fled into the bathroom, hands shaking as I unlocked my phone.

I found a long-forgotten contact and typed a message.

"I want to completely disappear from this world."

Adrian’s eyes bulged in disbelief."You dared to scheme against me? Lauren, why? You always loved me the most…"He lunged, trying to grab me, but Shane and the police were faster, pinning him to the ground.I removed the recording earpiece and miniature camera, handing them back to the officers. Then, I stepped closer to Adrian, my voice steady and cold as I said, "You should have known this day would come the moment you swapped my supplements for birth control. Adrian, no one loves you. No one ever will."His face twisted as I delivered the final blow. "You thought seeing me outside the house was an accident? No. That was your retribution beginning. Now go to hell."It had all been part of my plan.I knew once Adrian discovered Liam, his so-called "son", wasn’t his, his mind would crack. Rage would consume him, and afterward, he would desperately cling to the memory of the child I had once carried, deluding himself with the hope of rewinding time. That was when I allowed the

With Chloe gone, Adrian collapsed into ruin. The Foster Group, once an unshakable titan in Westbridge’s business world, now teetered on the brink of collapse. However, that wasn’t enough.I wanted their filth exposed for all the world to see. While the public mourned Chloe’s "tragic" death, paparazzi dropped bombshell after bombshell:"Chloe Shaw: The Mistress Who Schemed Her Way Into a Fortune""Adrian Foster and Chloe Shaw: Retribution""The Brutal Truth Behind Chloe Shaw’s Death"Every headline and article was pieced together from the evidence I had orchestrated, filmed, and preserved these past weeks. What they valued most, I would strip away completely.Overnight, Chloe’s reputation rotted beyond recovery. Industry colleagues lined up to condemn how arrogant she had been, her lack of professionalism, and even how shallow her acting was. She became the greatest disgrace the entertainment world had ever seen. The Foster Group's stock nosedived, plunging the century-old emp

Stepping once more onto the streets of Westbridge, a storm of emotions surged through me.A little inquiry was all it took to learn that Adrian had drowned himself in grief, consumed by the belief he had lost the love of his life. He neglected the Foster Group entirely, and even he and Chloe had grown hollow and estranged.I laughed coldly. If Adrian had ever cared enough, how could he not have noticed that the corpse was not me?If even a shred of conscience had remained in him, would my child have been reduced to nothing more than a pool of blood?I had already ordered a DNA test report to be placed neatly on the desk in his study. By now, he should have seen it.Sure enough, the Foster mansion soon blazed with lights.Suspicious as he was, Adrian would never take anything at face value. He would insist on doing his own test, and in the end, he would discover the truth: Liam was not his son.My suspicion had first been sparked by how Liam so perfectly mirrored Chloe’s featur

On the third day in the basement, I was rescued. It was Shane Ryland, my mother’s personal bodyguard. He had once been a mercenary. He was broad-shouldered, sharp-eyed, strong, and resourceful. After marrying Adrian, I had all but cut ties with my own family. My mother, Margaret Hayes, had always said the Fosters only valued me for the Hayes family’s wealth and that Adrian had married me for advantage. She never approved of the silent way he swept me into his home.In anger and pride, I severed my bond with them. Looking back now, I see how foolish that was.Even while speaking harshly, Mom continued to funnel support to the Fosters’ business as she was always fearful that I’d suffer in their house. So she had secretly stationed Shane in Westbridge to protect me, which explained how he reached me so quickly.Following her orders, Shane bribed the nanny and the gatekeepers, swapping me with a corpse of similar build. That was how I escaped.Sadly, my body had been neglected too l

Adrian tore apart the narrow, suffocating basement, but all he found was a dark stain that hadn’t been scrubbed away. That was the only proof that my child and I had ever existed. He seized the doctor, Dr. Bart Collins, by the collar, fury shaking his hands. "Dead?! Where is her body?"Dr. Collins stammered, his eyes wide with fear, "Ms. Shaw said since she was dead, we should get rid of the body, so I've…"Adrian staggered back, disbelief hollowing his face. He dialed Chloe again and again, but every call returned only a busy tone.Meanwhile, the media splashed yet another story of Chloe caught late at night with a male stripper; their scandals this month alone were too many to count.Every time, she would soften her voice, insisting she was framed, begging Adrian to suppress the rumors. Now, he no longer knew whether any of it had been true. His mind spun, a chaos of lies and fragments. One truth remained: he might have gotten into serious trouble.Adrian sat in the basement

"This is impossible! I watched you take your pills every single time. Impossible!"Adrian’s voice cracked through the air. The moment the words left his mouth, he froze, his eyes darting as though scrambling for a way out.Hearing the truth with my own ears was like having my heart carved apart with a blade.Adrian frowned as though he thought of helping me up, but Chloe caught his arm before he could. Her face was pale with panic, her voice quivering as she said, "Adrian, look at Liam. He’s having an asthma attack!"Liam sobbed so hard he couldn’t breathe, his little face turning a frightening shade of purple.Chloe clutched him like precious glass. "Miss Hayes, what a cruel trick. You knew Liam is asthmatic, yet you filled the house with flowers and let him cry himself sick. If anything happens to him, I won’t want to live either!""Chloe, stop. Don’t say that. Liam will be fine. The doctor’s on his way!" Adrian pressed his hand over her mouth, kissing Liam’s damp forehead in
