LOGINEMILIE
I don't know how long I ran through those woods. Could have been an hour, could have been five minutes. Time felt broken, like my brain couldn't process anything except run and don't stop and don't look back.
My lungs burned, My legs screamed.. Branches tore at my clothes and skin. But I kept going because the alternative was dying, and Mrs. Hawthorne hadn't sacrificed herself just so I could give up in the forest.
The rain had stopped at some point, but I was soaked through. My too-big boots kept trying to come off. My pajama pants were shredded. I was pretty sure I was bleeding from a dozen different cuts.
I finally stopped when I physically couldn't run anymore, collapsing against a tree and gasping for air.
That's when I heard it.
Someone groaning in pain nearby.
Every instinct I had screamed at me to stay hidden, stay quiet, keep moving. But something else something stronger pulled me toward that sound.
I crept through the underbrush and froze.
A guy about my age was leaning against a tree, one hand pressed to his side. Even in the dim pre-dawn light, I could see the blood. So much blood, soaking through his shirt, dripping onto the ground.
"Oh my god," I breathed.
His head snapped up, and I found myself staring into brown eyes that flickered gold for just a second. "Who's there?"
"You're hurt." I moved closer without thinking. "You're bleeding everywhere."
"Stay back." He raised a knife with a shaking hand.."This is pack territory. You're trespassing."
"I don't care about territory! You're going to bleed to death!" I took another step closer. "Please, let me help."
"You're human." He said it like an accusation. "Humans can't see" He swayed, face going pale. "How did you get past the wards?"
"I don't know what wards are I just ran." The words tumbled out. "Shadows killed my guardian and chased me through the forest and she told me to find Silvercrest territory, to find the marked son, and.."
"The marked son?" He lowered the knife slightly. "What did she say exactly?"
"That he'd have a crescent moon birthmark on his arm. That he could help me. That" I gestured helplessly. "Look, can we have this conversation after we stop you from dying?"
"I'm not going to" He stumbled, and I caught him before he could fall.
The second my skin touched his, everything changed.
Heat flooded through me,not painful the opposite. It felt like sunlight and safety and home all rolled into one sensation. and I felt it that power that had exploded out of me earlier, but controlled now, flowing from me into him.
He gasped.. I felt the wound under my hand knitting itself back together, flesh and muscle repairing in seconds.
When I pulled away, we both stared at each other in shock.
"What did you just do?" he whispered.
"I don't know.." I looked at my hands like they belonged to someone else. "I didn't mean to
It just happened."
He lifted his blood soaked shirt, smooth skin. No wound, Not even a scar.
"That's impossible…that wound was fatal. Dark magic that should have killed me." He grabbed my wrist, studying me. "What are you?"
"I don't know!" Tears were threatening again. "I don't know what I am or what's happening or why shadows killed the only person who ever loved me. I just know I'm supposed to find someone called the marked son and"
"I'm Kai." He pulled up his sleeve, showing me his left forearm.
There, clear as day, was a crescent moon birthmark.
Relief hit me so hard I almost collapsed. "Thank God.. thank god. She said you could help. She said" My voice broke.."She died telling me to find you."
His expression softened. "Who died?"
"Mrs. Hawthorne, my guardian. These shadow creatures came to our house and killed her right in front of me and I couldn't save her and.."
"Shadow creatures are hunting you?" His whole demeanor changed, became more alert. "And you healed a dark magic wound with a touch." He studied me like he was solving a puzzle. "You need to come with me to the pack palace. My father needs to meet you."
"Your father?"
"The Alpha, he rules Silvercrest." Kai steadied me when I swayed. "You'll be safe there. And maybe we can figure out what you are and why shadows want you."
I didn't have any other options; Didn't have anywhere else to go.
"Okay," I whispered. "Okay."
As he led me deeper into the forest, his hand steady on my back, I felt it. That same warmth from when I'd healed him. Like recognition, like coming home.
I didn't know it then, but finding Kai was about to change everything.
(Emilie's POV)When I woke up, nothing was right. The sky wasn't the sky. It hung above like broken glass, shimmering between night and day without ever committing to either. Rivers flowed backward, water running upward into clouds of silver mist. The ground beneath me pulsed like it had a heartbeat. Every breath I took tasted like iron and rain mixed together.I wasn't in the mortal world anymore.I was somewhere else. Somewhere that didn't follow the normal rules. The Shadowlands. We were riding through them on horses that made no sound. Lysander's guards surrounded me, their armor so black it seemed to absorb light. Their movements were silent, their faces hidden behind dark visors. Even their horses left no prints on the silver sand beneath us.My wrists glowed faintly, the twin moon marks shimmering. Chains of shadow hung loosely around my arms. They didn't hurt. They didn't even feel tight. But they were there, a constant reminder that I wasn't free anymore."Where are you taking
(Emilie's POV)The ceremonial hall smelled of smoke and burning silver.Torchlight flickered across the stone walls, casting long shadows. Every seat was filled. Elders, warriors, even people I'd never seen before crowded into the space. They'd all come to watch me get bound to Silvercrest forever.Magnus stood at the altar in black and silver robes, his voice rolling through the chamber like thunder. "Tonight, we unite the child of twilight with our pack. We bring balance. We bring protection."The crowd murmured their approval. My stomach twisted.I stood in the center of a circle carved with runes, wearing a ceremonial gown so heavy I could barely breathe. Silver charms hung from the fabric, jingling softly with every movement. My wrists glowed faintly where the moon marks had started to appear.Storm watched from the edge of the circle, her
(Emilie's POV)The silence after the attack was suffocating. For three days, Silvercrest held its breath. The halls reeked of medicine and ash. Everywhere I walked, eyes followed me like I was poison. The whispers started almost immediately."She's the reason they came.""The shadows were looking for her.""Maybe Magnus should turn her over before more people die."I heard them all. I pretended not to care, but each word carved itself into my chest.By the fourth morning, Magnus called a council. The great hall filled with pack leaders and warriors, their faces hard and suspicious. Magnus stood at the center, towering and calm, his silver-gray eyes cold as winter. Everyone fell silent when he spoke."The attack was coordinated," he announced. "Our wards were breached from the Shadowlands. But I want to be clear
(Emilie's POV)Storm's words were still hanging in the air when it happened."They're coming," she'd whispered, and I'd felt the weight of it settle over me like a funeral shroud. But I didn't understand. Not really, not until the ground itself started to shake. The tremor began small, barely noticeable. But then it grew. Harder, deeper. Like something massive was waking up far beneath the earth and pushing upward. The moonflowers in the garden began to wither, their light dimming. The fountains stuttered and went still."What's happening?" I asked, but Storm was already moving. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the garden. "We need to get back to the palace. Now."Ryker and Asher were already gone, fading back into the shadows like they'd known this was coming all along. The garden itself seemed to collapse around us, the beautiful silver light fading to gray. We ran through the archway just as it sealed shut behind us.We made it back to my chamber, but we weren't there l
(Emilie's POV)I couldn't sleep at night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the shadows from Kai's warning creeping across my walls. The darkness whispered things I didn't want to hear, and when I finally gave up and opened my eyes, dawn was already breaking over Silvercrest. That's when I saw her standing by the window.Storm. The woman with the white blonde hair and those pale, strange eyes that seemed to see right through you. The one who'd whispered about marks appearing when my power fully awakened. I hadn't seen her since that night, and part of me had hoped I wouldn't have to again. But here she was, watching the forest like she could read its secrets."You're awake," she said without turning around. Her voice was quiet but it made my heart jump anyway. "Good. We don't have much time.""What do you want?" I asked, still half tangled in my blankets. She finally looked at me, and those pale eyes seemed to glow in the early morning light. "The marks, Emilie. They're starting to s
EMILIEThey gave me a room that was bigger than my entire house had been. Huge bed, private bathroom, windows overlooking the forest. It should have felt safe.It felt like a cage.Aurora and Ethan tried to talk to me, but I couldn't. Every time I looked at them, all I could think about was Mrs. Hawthorne's broken body on the floor. The woman who actually raised me, who actually loved me, who died protecting me from the consequences of their choices."We'll let you rest," Aurora finally said, tears in her eyes. "But Emilie... we really did think we were doing the right thing.""Maybe you did," I said quietly. "But that doesn't make it hurt less."The words came out flat, empty. I wanted to scream at them. I wanted to ask them how they could sleep at night knowing they'd left me with a target on my back and lied for a foundation. But I was too tired, too broken. The anger would come later, I was sure of it. Right now, I just need them gone. They left, and I was alone for the first time
