Brynn and Aurora walked side by side through the walkway in the compound garden.
“I sincerely want to thank you,” Aurora said, “For welcoming and allowing me to stay in your mansion.”
“You don’t have to thank me, child. Like I said before, you are part of this family.” Brynn’s hands were crossed behind him as they continued to brush their bodies on the garden’s flowers.
“You say I am part of the family,” She bowed her head, “but your son and wife don’t seem to agree with you.”
“Who cares what they think?” He adjusted his glasses with his index finger, “Last I checked, I call the shots.”
Aurora parted her lips, but held back what she was trying to say.
“Go on, child, speak,” Brynn said, without sparing her a glance.
“It’s probably nothing important.”
“Whatever made you hold back,” He said, halting and turning towards her, “showed to me that what you wanted to say was important.”
Aurora bit her lip.
“Go on, child,” He said, “tell me. You don’t have to be scared; one shouldn’t be scared of family.”
“It’s just that you tell me I am part of the family, but I don’t know how, not even my mother knows how I am part of your family.” She looked at him with puppy eyes. “I would really love to know how.” She pushed out her lower lip, making her look like a child begging her parents for another scoop of ice cream.
Brynn’s lips twitched, amused by her cute childish act.
He turned and continued walking, and Aurora followed beside him.
“I had always wanted a female child,” He said, “Don’t get me wrong, I love my son, but I wanted a child who, no matter what, would always be daddy’s little princess.” He paused.
“Bianca had conceived of twins,” He stopped for a bit as though he was contemplating continuing the story, “But only Theodore made it out alive. The other child, female, couldn’t. She was breathless when she came out of her mother’s womb; nothing could be done.”
Brynn bit his lip. A feeling of guilt crossed his heart; it was an undeniable feeling, ‘some truths are better left under the carpet,’ he convinced himself.
He was just getting a step closer to Aurora, and didn’t want to ruin his chances for good.
“Wow!” Aurora sadly said. “I’m so sorry about that, master.”
“I had given up hope after several tries to have another child.” He paused and halted.
“But the moment I first held your tiny self in my arms,” He demonstrated, putting his hands together, as though he was holding an invisible baby.
Aurora smiled at the act.
For a moment, the master of the house looked like a man healing rather than a leader.
“I felt something within me,” He continued, “The way you smiled at me when your mother, Moira, handed you to me, it gave me the hope that I had lost.” Brynn crossed his arms behind him and looked to the sky.
“Then I thought to myself, ‘Maybe I don’t need to continue trying for another child. Maybe this was the child I always wanted.’ And right there, I decided that you would be a part of this family.” His face lit up with a one-sided smile.
He then looked at Aurora, “As your mother, she decided to take you to your grandmother’s in Northern California. I was in no position to stop her.”
Aurora, emotionally drawn to this discovery, began to water.
“I miss the little pitter-patter of your tiny feet,” He rubbed the side of her head, “But I always looked forward to when I would see you again.”
Aurora’s breath became heavy from holding back her tears.
“If my daughter had survived, she would be just like you. Beautiful, brave, intelligent, and mine to protect forever, even when she can stand and fight for herself.” He dropped his hand, “Now I don’t have to wish anymore, because the daughter I never expected is standing right in front of me.”
Aurora couldn’t hold herself anymore; she hugged Brynn tightly, and she worried she might have hurt him.
“I’m sorry about that, master.” She sniffed, eyes watered, ready to pour, but she held it back and blew air with her mouth to soothe herself.
Brynn grinned from ear to ear, “It’s okay,” He said, “I can’t tell when last I got a hug, I kind of needed that.”
“And you don’t have to call me master, Brynn would do.”
“All my life, I never knew my father because he died way before my birth,” Aurora said, her face red with unspoken emotions, “But I just learnt now that a father isn’t necessarily the man you share DNA with.”
Aurora held Brynn’s right hand with both hands, “If it’s okay by you,” She said, “I would love to address you not as master, but as father.”
Brynn’s eyes flickered, his brows slightly raised.
“Because I feel my father in you.” She grinned with overwhelming emotions.
Brynn couldn’t understand the emotions he was feeling at the moment; he was…. Touched? It was entirely difficult for a tough leader like him to be touched, but with Aurora, it was different.
“It would be an honour.” He replied, his heart beat with an unexplained emotion.
Aurora dropped one of her hands, still holding Brynn’s with the other, and she started to gently swing it as they continued walking, like a little child being escorted to school by her father.
Brynn’s stern eyes became softened as they both walked in silence, and Aurora, still holding his hand, looked up to him, no longer as a stranger but as a daughter.
“I was thinking,” Aurora said, “Having a mother and brother who despise me, I’m a bit unsettled. I have never thought of having a family that despises me.” She bowed her head in uncertainty.
“Just give them time, they’ll have no other choice but to come around,” Brynn said, looking at Aurora, “Trust me.”
“Okay…. father.” She beamed.
Brynn felt unexplainably satisfied.
“Master.” A voice broke the atmosphere.
Luke walked hastily towards Brynn,
“Aurora, meet Luke,” Brynn said. “He is in charge of how everything runs in the house.”
“Miss Aurora,” Luke bowed, “pleased to meet you.”
“Luke, this is Aurora, she’s part of this family,” Brynn said, Luke still bowing his head, “And my daughter.”
Luke’s eyes widened, and Aurora’s teeth were very visible as she grinned uncontrollably.
“Daughter?” Luke asked, jerking upright, not meeting Brynn’s eyes.
A heavy silence hovered around them.
“Do you have a problem with that?”
“Not if I value my life,” Luke said, “Pleased to meet you, Lady Aurora.” He bowed once more.
Waiting for the order to be given.“Come, child,” Brynn called out to her.Aurora gently headed towards Brynn’s stretched hand, her face lit up, not because she was happy, but because she felt fatherly love from someone she least expected, and never knew how much she needed it, until now.Brynn had a look on his face, one that showed that he didn’t want Aurora to leave just yet. She hadn’t gone, but he already missed her.Aurora, on the other hand, didn’t want to leave this newly found love just yet, but her stay in the mansion had been a bittersweet memory, as she had enjoyed the love Brynn showered upon her, just as she had endured the rejection both Theodore and the madam showed to her.Brynn held her hand tightly as soon as it touched his.“Luke would personally ensure your safe return.” He said.Aurora glanced at the car, “Isn’t this too much, Father?” She looked at Brynn, “I would have preferred going back the way I came, by public transport.”“You might have come to the mansion
Bianca barged into Theodore’s room, with Ingrid following behind, while Theodore covered his wounds with a bandage.“Oh my child,” Bianca walked with speed towards Theodore, who was sitting on the bed. “Why not have the doctor check you out and treat your wounds? You shouldn’t be doing this yourself.”“I’m fine, mum. Besides, it’s just a scratch, and don’t forget that we heal faster than normal,” Theodore looked at Ingrid, who was now standing close to him, with a worried look. “Why do you look like you are the one who fought? You’re such a mess.”Ingrid playfully hit his hand,“Ow!”“Sorry about that,” She looked at him, “I thought I was going to lose you, your mother, and I were so worried about you.”“She’s right, son. We were all worried.” Bianca said.“Including dad?” Theodore asked, “I bet he wasn’t. He was probably bothered about me not being able to prove myself, rather than my well-being.”“Don’t say that about your father; he loves you very much,” Bianca said.“Congratulatio
“Chicken!”Aurora’s voice came upon him, beclouding his sense of reasoning.Theodore blinked. He began to remember her taunting face, how she’d teased him in the hallway. The glint in her eyes when she challenged him, calling him a chicken.“This apple has fallen far from the tree.”“Scared of what this animal could do to you?”“What’s stopping you?”“I definitely thought you were going to do some real damage.”“Chicken!”The voices inside his head made him angry, as they challenged him even further.‘I am not a chicken.’ He thought to himself.Lucius’s clawed hands came down to the horror of the audience, and unexpectedly, when they all thought that was the end, Theodore held both hands before they landed.A deep, low growl came out from his chest as he rose slowly, his eyes burning like someone who had had enough and was ready to come out of his shackles.Bianca’s knees gave out as she fell on the chair, breathing heavily in relief, her son survived… for now.Brynn and Ingrid, on he
“The two candidates stand before the council of elders,” Brynn’s voice sounded cold. Both candidates stood before the council of elders, their families seated beside the elders.“Now I’m scared, mother,” Ingrid said, looking at Bianca, “This man is a psychopath, he kills for fun.”“How could Brynn allow this?” Bianca asked, with a worried look, while she clenched her fists.“Before you start, I must state the rules: Candidates must fight in their fully shifted werewolf form. No external weapons of any kind, no use of any form of magic or magical objects. No external interference of any kind, and most importantly, no deathblows. The goal is incapacitation or submission, not death. The trial ends only when one of the candidates physically submits, or is rendered fully incapacitated and can no longer continue.” Brynn said.Theodore and Lucius looked at each other, and Lucius gave a death smirk. He looked desperate to win, even if it meant breaking the rules.“Now listen to this essentia
Moira quickly went in and checked on her daughter. She saw that she was asleep, then noticed the empty glass of milk on the table, and felt relieved.Guests had started to arrive at the mansion, with the grand arena gradually filling up with people. It was already past 4 pm, and the council of elders had taken their seats. The hall was gigantic and tall, with a row of seats in the front of the arena, strictly reserved for the council of elders. There were specifically designed chairs for alphas and their betas, in another row, next to the council of elders, and then the other seats were for wolves of lower status. The Trial arena was a little bit lower down; those who sat looked down at the arena floor.Luke stood by the hall’s entrance to receive guests, while Brynn discussed with people he had not seen for a long time because of uncontrolled circumstances.“Master Graham,” Lucius bowed, “You are most welcome.”“Same as always, Luke, kudos to your skincare routine,” Graham said in sa
“Don’t tell me you haven’t missed this.” He grinned, hips moving in a slow tease under the fabric.Bianca smiled in amusement, “I think I miss you more.” She said. The following day, Moira stood by Brynn’s side in the study room, where she had been summoned.“It must be given within 3 to 3:30 pm tomorrow, no more than that. We can’t risk her stumbling into the trial.” Brynn said, handing a wrapped object to Moira,“We need her late enough to last the night, and early enough to wake up in time for her departure. No mistakes.”“Yes, master,” Moira said, her eyes furrowed in curiosity.“I would’ve done it myself, but she trusts you more.” He said, “You don’t have to worry, it would be over before she even begins to suspect.”It was now past 3 pm, and Moira had started to panic a bit. She had poured the whole contents of the bottle that Brynn had given her into Aurora’s glass of milk, only for Aurora to tell her that she wasn’t going to take milk until early in the morning. She had served
