“A ‘nobody’, you called her.” Ingrid’s eyes looked out of Theodore’s window, into the garden, where she could see Brynn laughing hard at Aurora’s jokes.
“But she seemed to be having a great time with your father, one would think that she is the favourite child.” She said, with an underlying angry tone.
She hadn’t gotten over the fact that Brynn had embarrassed her in front of a human.
“How long have you been standing there?” Theodore said, coming out of the bathroom, with his bare chest and a towel around his waist.
“She isn’t worth your time.” He held Ingrid from behind.
“You think so?”
“Don’t tell me you feel threatened by her.” He bent his head to meet Ingrid’s eyes.
She looked at him, “I’m not threatened by her.” She lifted her brows, “But when she is giving the father of my soon-to-be mate, the best laughs of his life,” She looked back at them, “I feel worried.”
Theodore kissed her neck from the side,
“Aren’t you bothered about this?” Ingrid asked with a curious look.
“I stopped bothering a long time ago, I’m used to being unseen,” He said, resting his jaw on her head, “I am not bothered at all.”
“With what I’m seeing, I don’t think she is leaving anytime soon.”
“She,” Theodore turned Ingrid around to meet his eyes, “would be out of here in no time.” He pecked her lips.
Ingrid breathed out heavily and looked at them once more.
“Enough ‘them’ time,” He closed the window curtains, and Ingrid looked at him, and twitched the side of her lips, “Now, let’s have some ‘us’ time.”
He bit his lower lip, and Ingrid looked him in the eyes, feeling the heat.
“You are not going to believe this, Mum.” Aurora beamed with joy as she entered her mother’s room.
“We need to talk, Aurora.” Moira’s voice came out, still and without emotion.
She sat on the chair in front of the mirror stand, staring right at Aurora. One would think that she was expecting to see Aurora come through the door in no time.
“Is everything okay, Mum?” Aurora asked, slowly walking towards her mother.
“It all depends on you.”
“How do you mean?” Aurora asked, and she sat down on the bed, looking at her mother. “Did I do anything wrong?”
“Not really, but the master’s wife thinks otherwise.” Moira said, “I was summoned today.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Aurora,” Moira stood and slowly walked towards Aurora, “I love you, my child, and I will never do anything to hurt you.”
She bent down to meet Aurora’s eyes, “But within the walls of this mansion, my hands are tied, I am nothing but a worker. I could be punished in ways that you can never imagine if you go against the high authorities in this mansion.”
“I don’t know why she despises me, but I promise, I have been very careful.”
“I believe you,” Moira said, “But you can never be too careful.”
Aurora’s eyes fell.
“That’s why I have decided that you will leave the mansion as early as tomorrow.”
Aurora’s eyes widened, “What?!”
“I know,” Moira said, holding Aurora’s hands, “But it’s the best I can do to protect you.”
“You can’t do that,” She retorted, “I have waited years to see you, mum, please don’t send me away. I still need to spend more time with you.”
“Please,” Moira bowed her head, hiding her emotions, “don’t make this harder than it already is for me.”
She lifted her head. “You just have to go, please.”
“You stay away from me for nineteen years,” Aurora said, with teary eyes, “And you send me away after seeing you for just two days?”
“Do you think it is easy for me?” Moira shot to her feet, bursting with her emotions. “You have no idea what I am going through. Sending you to your grandmother, staying away from you all these years,” She sniffed, holding her emotions back.
She turned her back, “Neither were done willingly, I had no choice,” her head fell in defeat. “Every night I cry, holding on to the first dress you ever wore. I remember the laughter, the sound of your tiny voice echoing through the hallway as you played and laughed.”
She turned around, tears trickled down her face, “I felt like dying. I still hate myself for making that decision; I had missed out on the major parts of my baby’s life. I wish the situation were different, but unfortunately, it isn’t.”
Aurora was silent; she had never seen her mother like this before, and it broke something within her.
“Please, my child,” Moira bent down again, “It’s hard for both of us, but it would be so much harder for me if you remained here.”
Aurora saw the sheer terror in her mother’s eyes; she didn’t understand why, and she felt there was something her mother wasn’t saying.
“Are they evil?” Aurora asked.
“What?” Moira’s eyes widened.
“Do they hurt you?” Aurora’s eyes widened curiously. “Do they hurt you? What are you hiding?”
Moira gave her child a surprised look.
“Do you need help?” She added, “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what is going on.”
Moira noticed that she was frightening her daughter; she didn’t want that.
If Aurora were suspicious, it might escalate the whole issue and increase the danger around her. Ignorance would be total bliss for Aurora right now.
“No,” Moira said, caressing Aurora’s cheek. “Nothing is wrong, it’s not what you think. I want you to get back to your elderly grandmother, that’s all.” She gave a false grin.
After a moment of silence, Aurora took a deep breath. “Okay.” She said, with a sad face, “I’ll leave first thing tomorrow.”
Moira heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank you,” she said, smiling. “My sweet child.”
But as Moira turned away, her smile melted, and a glint of fear settled in her eyes.
Moira quickly went in and checked on her daughter. She saw that she was asleep, then noticed the empty glass of milk on the table, and felt relieved.Guests had started to arrive at the mansion, with the grand arena gradually filling up with people. It was already past 4 pm, and the council of elders had taken their seats. The hall was gigantic and tall, with a row of seats in the front of the arena, strictly reserved for the council of elders. There were specifically designed chairs for alphas and their betas, in another row, next to the council of elders, and then the other seats were for wolves of lower status. The Trial arena was a little bit lower down; those who sat looked down at the arena floor.Luke stood by the hall’s entrance to receive guests, while Brynn discussed with people he had not seen for a long time because of uncontrolled circumstances.“Master Graham,” Lucius bowed, “You are most welcome.”“Same as always, Luke, kudos to your skincare routine,” Graham said in sa
“Don’t tell me you haven’t missed this.” He grinned, hips moving in a slow tease under the fabric.Bianca smiled in amusement, “I think I miss you more.” She said. The following day, Moira stood by Brynn’s side in the study room, where she had been summoned.“It must be given within 3 to 3:30 pm tomorrow, no more than that. We can’t risk her stumbling into the trial.” Brynn said, handing a wrapped object to Moira,“We need her late enough to last the night, and early enough to wake up in time for her departure. No mistakes.”“Yes, master,” Moira said, her eyes furrowed in curiosity.“I would’ve done it myself, but she trusts you more.” He said, “You don’t have to worry, it would be over before she even begins to suspect.”It was now past 3 pm, and Moira had started to panic a bit. She had poured the whole contents of the bottle that Brynn had given her into Aurora’s glass of milk, only for Aurora to tell her that she wasn’t going to take milk until early in the morning. She had served
“You would do that?” She asked with her eyes wide open.“Yes,”Aurora kept quiet for a few seconds,“I think I’m good,” She said, “I want to do this all by myself.”“Really?” Brynn asked, amazed by her refusal of help“Yeah,” She said, “But thank you so much for offering to help.”“You’re welcome.”There was silence as Aurora went back to reading,Brynn broke the silence, “Do you not think that the young master has suffered enough?”Aurora grinned nervously, looking at Brynn, “He told you.” She said.“He was obviously vexed today,” Brynn said, “so I was hoping for mercy from my princess.”Aurora chuckled sweetly,“I had actually thought about it, Mr. Luke said I should tune it down a bit.”“Luke?” His brows lifted.“Yes,” She answered, “But now that you’ve asked, I will stop it entirely.“Thank you.” He smiled faintly.“I was just pissed about how he treated me,” She said with a guilty expression, “but I’m sorry.”“It’s okay, as long as you have decided to show my son mercy. My prince
He stood in front of the shut door for a while and stared at every worker his eyes could see, like he was looking for the perfect candidate to pour his anger on.Just then, his eyes fell on Aurora, who was walking with Luke. They were heading towards Theodore, both of them laughing like they were having a nice time.“Greetings, young master.” Luke greeted Theodore on seeing him as they halted.Theodore didn’t respond, but his eyes were fixed on Aurora the whole time. His eyes were filled with fury, cold and focused.Aurora suspected something strong in his temper, and she was careful not to step on his toes; this was definitely not the time to annoy him like during Brynn’s absence.Even if Brynn protected her, this would be a disastrous time if she spiked him, because, like her mother had said, blood is thicker than water. She bowed her head.‘You can’t call him a chicken now, Aurora, else you would be the one in soup.’ She thought to herself.Theodore sneered and walked away.Aurora
“Apart from the master and my mum, I don’t talk with any other person in this house, and sometimes it’s boring.” She said. “I would so much appreciate it if you were free with me. What I need right now is a friend, or an uncle that I can talk to and share things with,” She dropped her head.“You acting all formal, isn’t cool with me.”“But the master…”“Isn’t here right now,” She said, “You can go back to being an order executing machine with the master around, but with me, be an uncle, or a friend. I would sincerely prefer both.”Luke’s brows furrowed. Since he had entered this mansion, no one had asked for his friendship until now. It made him feel wanted, aside from following the master’s orders. He loved his master, but he never dared to stray from his role as a Beta.“And besides,” She looked at Luke, “You were instructed to attend to my needs and do whatever I say. So I command you to be free with me.” She pointed a finger at him.Luke’s brows furrowed in confusion. He held back
“Oh, wait!” He said, “How about you start by demonstrating to me what you can actually do?”He immediately started to take all the glasses,“What are you doing?” Aurora asked, watching him.“Giving you a chance to show me what you are capable of.” He said, putting all the glasses at the top of the big cabinet, high and far away from Aurora’s reach.“You can’t do that,” She retorted, “I need to get milk.”“Oh, right,” He said, went to the refrigerator, took out all the gallons of milk and placed them high above, with the glasses.“There.” He said, dusting both hands together and folding his arms, “Your turn.”Aurora stepped back in defeat.‘This is not fair, I needed milk.’ She thought to herself.“I don’t need to get the milk to prove anything to you,” She said, “As a matter of fact, I never needed the milk anyway.”“Fine then, goodnight.” He said and turned to leave.“You’re just going to let the glasses and milk stay there?” She asked with her brows lifted.“Don’t worry about them,
