Chapter 4

Author: The Handsome Guy
Impatience flickered in Molly's eyes. "If you die, I'll see you buried myself.

"Whether you take the picture or not, and whether or not you faked that report, none of it changes the fact that Tyler and I are getting married.

"For the sake of the portfolio I delivered for your photography competition three years ago, stop making trouble."

I froze. It felt like my heart had been blown to pieces with dynamite.

Even my voice trembled uncontrollably. "You think... I'm playing games to break you two up?"

The corners of her lips curved slightly, the look she gave me sharp and cold.

She said nothing, yet she'd said everything.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to cry.

But in the end, I just fought desperately to hold back the tears threatening to break free.

After a long while, she looked at me as if she felt a twinge of pity and added in a low voice, "I don't want him to know even the slightest thing... about you."

I let out a heavy breath.

I wanted so badly to tell her that the last frame on that roll was meant for me.

For my memorial portrait.

I'd stopped loving her a long time ago.

But my throat felt choked by the impatience in her eyes, and I couldn't say a single word.

What finally came out was, "I'll... take it."

The moment the last shutter clicked, I fled to my lounge and swallowed a few more painkillers.

But the pills couldn't touch my pain anymore.

Taking them was nothing more than a placebo.

There was a knock at the door.

"Dominic, come to the bachelor party tonight! I want to thank you properly!"

But with late-stage stomach cancer, I couldn't eat anything at all. Every bite was torture for my ravaged stomach.

I wanted to say no.

But before I could open my mouth, Molly's cool voice rang out. "Come. Tyler wants you there."

I froze, but under her forceful stare, I got in the car anyway.

By the time we arrived, plenty of people were already there.

Ignoring how stiff I'd gone, Tyler dragged me into the crowd, pressed a glass of liquor into my palm, and took one for himself.

"This one's for you. Thank you for capturing the way my wife looks at me. You made it look so full of love. I really love it!"

The hand holding my glass trembled slightly as I forced a smile.

The harsh, bitter liquor exploded across my tongue.

My first instinct was to throw up, but in the end I used every ounce of strength I had to slowly swallow the liquor down, along with the blood in my throat.

It felt like swallowing countless razor blades, slicing through my stomach and intestines one cut at a time.

He seemed completely oblivious and poured me another glass.

"This one's a toast to you finding your true love soon. Someone who'll hold you in the palm of their hand and treasure you, just like Molly does for me."

I listened to every single word, my eardrums aching as if pierced by needles.

Like a masochist, I gulped down another mouthful.

I let the pain and the taste of blood rage and explode inside me.

Suddenly, Molly leaned in close and whispered something in Tyler's ear.

Tyler nodded, gave me an apologetic smile, and walked off with his glass.

"Tomorrow I'm getting married. Congratulate me..." She raised her glass toward me, her expression unreadable.

I froze and looked up at her.

Under the refracted light, her eyes were dark and bright, exactly like a woman glowing from being loved.

I suppressed the trembling of my entire body and clinked my glass against hers. I stayed silent for a long, long time.

Then, with tears in my eyes, I smiled and said, "May you two grow old together."

After she left, I downed the rest of my drink in one gulp.

Facing the night wind, I walked out the door one step at a time.

The familiar stickiness trickled from my nose.

Tears streamed down my face, and countless shrill whistles rang in my ears.

But I couldn't make out a thing.

It hurt so much...

I was so tired...

…

On the day of the wedding, at Tyler's strong insistence, Molly finally called Dominic.

"Where are you? Tyler wants you at the wedding..."

But a cold male voice answered instead.

"Ma'am, this is Carvel General Hospital. Dominic Hillier passed away last night."

At that, Molly slowly raised her eyes, a light of unbearable pain shining in them."Before we were supposed to get our marriage license, he had wanted to get matching tattoos. Back then, all I cared about was my research. I thought spending hours on a tattoo was a waste of time..."He always used to tease me for being so no-nonsense. He said I was clueless about romance and hated having my picture taken..."Her eyes suddenly grew damp."After we broke up, I told myself I couldn't stay the person he used to complain about. So I had to do every one of those things perfectly..."Tyler's hands had long since clenched so tightly that his knuckles had gone white. So all the romance and thoughtfulness he'd believed in had been nothing but changes she made for Dominic. He was just a pitiful test subject."Tyler, I'll give you everything I own, but I can't marry you. No matter what you do, my decision isn't going to change."Tyler didn't say anything for a long time. He just hung his he

Molly held Dominic's phone tightly to her chest like a precious treasure. She just lay slumped on the floor, her fingertips absently stroking the phone back and forth. It was strange. She went through the entire phone but couldn't find a single selfie of Dominic.Or anything like a farewell letter. After a long time, she found a list in his notes app: a bucket list of things to do before he died, covered in checkmarks.Every item had been checked off except the last one: Take my own memorial portrait.Almost instantly, Molly understood why Dominic had suddenly stopped that day when there was only one shot left on the roll.So that was it...He'd been saving it for his own memorial portrait. And she'd forced him to use it on a group photo for her wedding instead.Molly sat on the floor with her head bowed, her expression hidden. After a long while, like a woman gone mad, she slammed her red, swollen forehead against the wall with all her strength, over and over. She regrett

Molly slapped herself hard across the face twice, her tears spilling down together.A couple of them even splashed onto Dominic's face, and she clumsily wiped them away with her sleeve.Suddenly, an angry voice rang out beside her. "Molly, you killed my grandfather and my sister with your car, and you promised you'd marry me. Are you trying to back out now?"Molly didn't answer Tyler. She just knelt in front of drawer 303 without moving, as though she'd fallen asleep.Furious, Tyler lunged at her and grabbed her by the collar. But when he saw her face, he froze completely. The woman in front of him was no longer the radiant bride with striking almond-shaped eyes he'd seen that morning. Her eyes were bloodshot, the corner of her lip split and bloody, and her face red and swollen, as if someone had beaten her.He resented her bitterly, yet his heart ached for her all the same. "What... happened to you?"Only then did Molly seem to come back to herself. She looked up blankly, he

The doctor stared at her in disbelief, a little stunned. "Ma'am, if you're Mr. Hillier's girlfriend, you should know he had late-stage stomach cancer... He'd been fighting it for three years. He was already at his limit."His stomach was riddled with holes. He only had a couple of days left as it was, and on top of that, he drank high-proof vodka last night. By the time he got to the hospital, he was already gone."Molly's pale lips trembled over and over. Her throat felt stuffed with cotton, and she couldn't get a single question out.Only the doctor's voice went on."He collapsed outside a hotel, bleeding from his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, foaming at the mouth, unable to speak. It was a passerby who couldn't stand to watch and called him an ambulance..."The doctor sighed and shook his head. Having said his piece, he walked away.Molly was left slumped in the hallway, dazed, like a lifeless lump of dead flesh. In a fog, she walked into the morgue and stood beside drawer 303

At first, Molly thought the man had to be joking."What nonsense are you talking about? He was perfectly fine yesterday..."The man on the line showed no impatience at her outburst. He simply repeated himself."Ma'am, are you Mr. Hillier's girlfriend? I see he has you listed as his emergency contact. No one has come to claim his body at the hospital. Could you come down?"Since the call was on speaker, Tyler heard every word.He snatched the phone and hung up. "Scammer!"Molly clutched her chest, gasping for air as a sharp pain suddenly burst inside her heart.Tyler patted her back and shot the phone a resentful glare. "Don't think about it. It has to be some scammer. He was taking pictures of us yesterday. How could he suddenly just drop dead?"Come on, the new tuxedos just got here and I haven't tried them on yet. Come help me pick!"With Tyler cutting in like that, Molly pushed the call to the back of her mind, even though she still had her doubts. She watched him try on s
