Chapter 7

Autor: Blueberry Burst
Agony seized Aurora, its fiery grip unrelenting. She licked her chapped lips, her expression bitter.

So, the pictures of her that had spread like wildfire online and the press that had harassed her earlier were all Xavier's doing. And he didn't even plan on letting her pay her last respects to the orphanage director who'd watched her grow up.

Xavier truly never loved her at all.

A short while later, Xavier entered the room again. He put on a look of relief when he saw that Aurora was awake.

"Oh, thank goodness!" he exclaimed. "I thought we'd miss out on getting our marriage license if you didn't wake up in the next two days."

Aurora's head dipped slightly as she snorted inwardly. Xavier wasn't worried that they'd miss out on getting their marriage license; he was worried she'd screw up his 100th attempt to avoid getting married.

She slid the engagement ring off her finger and placed it in Xavier's hand. "This is the ring you gave me when you proposed. I'm returning it to you now… You can put it on for me tomorrow after we get our license."

Xavier froze, then smiled as he said, "Sure. Whatever you say, Rory."

Taking a deep breath, Aurora asked, "Do you still remember how happy you were when I said yes to your proposal? My feelings for you never changed, but I wonder if your love for me is still true."

"My love for you is true, Rory. Until death," Xavier answered solemnly without hesitation.

Aurora couldn't help but find all this rather pointless. She gave him a curt hum in response, then scooted back under the covers. "I'm tired. You can go home now. I'll be fine on my own."

"Sleep well, Rory. I'll meet you at the courthouse tomorrow." Xavier tucked her in and set a glass of lukewarm water on the bedside table, his gentle indulgence almost like a farce.

The next morning, Aurora woke up to a bucket of freezing water splashed over her. The water was so cold that it made her bones freeze, and she sneezed three times in a row. Panicking, she looked up and saw Ethan standing before her, and her body went rigid.

"I'm giving you away today," Ethan said imperiously, regarding Aurora as if she were his charity case for the day. "Think of the water as a way to wash off your sins. As long as you're kind to others from now on, you'll always have a place in the Bowman family."

He beckoned for two stylists to enter the room, then brought out a clean, ivory wedding gown. "An older brother is like a father to his younger siblings. I had these prepared for your big day. A driver will take you to the courthouse after you've done your makeup."

Aurora went still. Ethan knew this would be Xavier's 100th attempt to get out of marrying her, yet he had come and offered to give her away as if he were doing her a huge favor.

"What, are you so happy that you can't speak?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Stop gawking and get your makeup done already. Xavier's waiting for you at the courthouse so you can get your marriage license together. Violet and I will drop by later to witness your special day, too."

Aurora nearly scoffed. She doubted they would swing by to witness her special day. They only wanted to witness her downfall and make a laughingstock out of her.

"Alright. Thank you… Ethan," she said slowly and quietly. She didn't bother calling Ethan's bluff. She'd be leaving Nordura later anyway.

Ethan's brow furrowed.

In the past, he would have been loath to refer to himself as Aurora's older brother. He might have even snapped at her for addressing him by his first name, just because.

But today was different. He had to get her hopes up now so that he could crush them later. Such was the sweet taste of revenge!

"Sure." Suppressing his disgust, Ethan nodded and turned to leave the room.

Aurora waited until Ethan had disappeared around the entryway before she got out of bed, shivering. Drenched from head to toe, she wrapped her arms around herself and said to the two stylists, "How much did he pay you? I'll pay you double to leave, but you have to promise me to keep this a secret."

After Aurora had paid the stylists to leave, she grazed her fingertips on the pristine, intricately made wedding gown. "How soft. Too bad I won't be wearing it."

She grabbed the wedding gown and bundled it up in her arms, then mercilessly tossed it into the trash. She then wrote an official estrangement announcement and had an attorney publish it in the papers.

Finally, she sent Xavier a text, scheduled to be sent in several hours: "Consider your revenge a success. You've got seven years of my youth and a stillborn baby to show for it."

When Aurora was done, the person whom the Winston family sent to escort her to Elmstead arrived.

A lively young woman with short hair stepped out of the car. She didn't comment on Aurora's pathetic state and only shrugged off her jacket, draping it over Aurora's frame. "If you're ready to go, Ms. Bowman, follow me."

Aurora nodded, quietly thanked the young woman, and got into the car after her. She didn't look back or feel reluctant to leave. After all, she didn't have anyone worth loving in Nordura anymore.

A loud bang echoed, along with Violet's scream. She never got the chance to hit Aurora. Instead, an unmarked truck came barreling around the corner and crashed straight into her. The windshield shattered into pieces. Some shards were embedded into Violet's face, arms, and blood vessels. Bright red blood poured from her wounds as she screamed and trembled while opening the car door to roll out. However, the moment she got out, she saw a group of men in black suits. The leader rolled up his sleeves, showing off his muscles. "You crazy bitch, we've been watching you for days. Finally caught you in the act." Violet's whole body shook. "W-What?"The man kicked her hard, driving the broken glass deeper as she screamed in agony.Another man stuffed something in her mouth to muffle her cries. "You thought you could ambush Mrs. Winston with such pathetic skills? Do you really think we're amateurs?"The bodyguards laughed loudly, mocking her. "Let me tell you something, Mr. Winston assi

Under mounting pressure, Xavier and Ethan had no choice but to book the earliest flight back to Nordura.Xavier was admitted to a hospital to recover. Though his body was in Nordura, his heart remained stuck in Elmstead, unable to move on. Day after day, he sat silently in his hospital bed, staring blankly at the blue sky and drifting clouds outside the window.Sometimes, Violet would show up with food or offer to massage his legs. However, he treated her like she was invisible, not even sparing her a word. He completely shut himself off from the outside world, escaping into daydreams where Aurora was still by his side.…Two weeks passed, and although Xavier's injuries had mostly healed, his spirit grew duller by the day. That afternoon, Violet finally snapped. She threw the lunchbox to the floor and yelled, "Xavier, can you stop obsessing over her? I'm right here in front of you! Can't you see me?"Xavier's eyes twitched, but his eyes remained lifeless. He said flatly, "Go away

The next afternoon, bright lights shimmered across Aurora's figure inside the bridal boutique. She stood before a full-length mirror, dressed in a luxurious, custom-made wedding gown. The wide, voluminous skirt bloomed like clouds, feeling as soft and delicate as cotton candy against her skin. The boutique staff gathered around her, their eyes full of genuine admiration. One of them gushed, "Miss, you look absolutely stunning. This dress is perfect for you!"Aurora's cheeks flushed. She lowered her gaze, murmuring a shy, "Thank you."Just then, Caden pulled aside the curtain and stepped inside. His eyes locked on her as if entranced, completely captivated by the sight of her. He stood frozen for half a minute before finding his voice."Aurora, you're beautiful," Caden said, his heart feeling like it had been struck by something. He stepped forward and gently kissed her forehead. "I'm a lucky man to be able to marry you."Several boutique staff covered their mouths and stepped asid

Xavier shut his eyes in pain, knowing Aurora's personality well. If she said she would die rather than go with him, she meant it. He couldn't afford to take that risk, but it still burned inside him that she'd rather be with someone else."Rory, I really love you. We were together for so many years. If you wanted to get married, you could've just told me. Why run off to marry some stranger instead? I'm begging you, Rory. Please forgive me. Come back with me," he pleaded.Aurora had finally loosened the ropes on her wrists and pulled herself free. She stared coldly at Xavier and said, "Don't insult the word 'love.' I'm not getting married just because I want to get married. I'm marrying because I met Caden, and he made me want that life."She added, her face showing no emotion, "Save your confession for when you go back to Nordura and tell it to Violet."If this had happened in the past, Aurora would have been so thrilled by Xavier's confession that she couldn't sleep. But now, she

The moment Xavier stepped into the upscale private club's luxury lounge, he saw Caden sitting at the head of the table, staring at him coldly."I figured you'd agree to see me," Xavier said with a smirk, casually pulling out a chair and sitting down.Caden tapped his fingers on the table, his eyes radiating murderous intent. "So, what are your conditions?"Xavier raised an eyebrow. "Conditions? You really want her that badly? Caden, you're supposed to be Elmstead's golden boy, and Aurora's just some woman I got tired of sleeping with. You really want to pick up my leftovers and treat them like treasure?"Caden picked up his coffee cup and hurled it straight at Xavier's chest. "Watch your mouth, or next time it won't be just a cup I'm throwing."Xavier gritted his teeth but kept his cocky attitude. "Caden, my words might be harsh, but they're the truth. Aurora was with me for seven years. I could find that mole on her chest with my eyes closed, and she even carried my child once.

Xavier stood there like he'd been struck by lightning, reaching out again for Aurora. However, Ethan quickly stepped in to block him. He shot Xavier a warning look and said, "You're going to scare her!"Then, he turned around, his voice suddenly softer. "Aurora, I'm on your side. Don't forgive this guy too easily! But I'm not like him… I'm your big brother. You might not go home with him, but at least come home with me, okay?"He reached out to hug her. "Mom and Dad are back. We're all waiting for you to come home and be a family again—"But the next second, Ethan was punched from behind. He cried out in pain and spun around, stunned to see Caden standing there. He growled, "You punk, I'm her brother! How dare you hit me?"Caden's eyes were ice-cold, anger radiating from his entire body. "You think you deserve to call yourself Aurora's brother?""I—" Ethan was intimidated by his authoritative gaze and stood there unable to say a word.Caden took off his suit jacket and gently d
