The crash echoed sharply from behind the pale wooden doors, metallic, and unmistakably the sound of something heavy toppling over.

Every girl stiffened.

Even the air seemed to hold its breath, suspended in cold stillness.

Maude’s brows slowly snapped together.

The two stewards beside her exchanged quick looks, one instinctively stepping forward as though ready to investigate.

Before he could take a single step, Maude raised a hand sharply.

“No. There are already attendants assigned inside,” she said, her voice low but tinged with annoyance. “His Highness does not require the entire palace running to his door at every second.”

The stewards froze at once.

But one of them—an older man with thinning hair—shifted uneasily and murmured under his breath, “Still… it’s near his quarters. His Highness must be awake.”

The words rippled through the line of girls like a jolt.

His Highness.

That must mean the Third Prince.

The tension thickened instantly. A few girls paled and ducked their heads. S

The door slammed open. "UP! All of you!" Maude's voice cracked through the dormitory like a whip, jolting every girl awake. Groans and gasps filled the room as the servants scrambled out of their bunks, bleary-eyed and disoriented. This time, they were more organized than the day before. Esme woke immediately, but her body protested. Her head throbbed faintly, a dull, persistent ache from too little sleep. Her limbs felt heavy, sluggish, like they were weighed down by iron. She pushed herself upright slowly, blinking against the harsh morning light streaming through the narrow windows. Dreary. That was the only word for how she felt. But she didn't let it show. She climbed down from her bunk, her movements steady and controlled despite the exhaustion clinging to her. Below, Linny was already awake, watching her with wide, worried eyes. The other girls rushed around, throwing on their uniforms, splashing cold water on their faces, braiding their hair hastily. Esme pulled o

"Wait."Esme's voice cut through the silence. He stopped.Didn't turn immediately. Just paused mid-step, one hand resting lightly on the doorframe, silhouetted against the faint glow of the corridor beyond. Then, slowly, he glanced back over his shoulder."Yes?"Esme hesitated. She didn't know why she'd called out. The words had left her mouth before she'd thought them through. But now that she had his attention, she couldn't just stand there in silence."Will you... tell anyone? About this?"In the dim light, she could just make out the curve of his grin."That I got thrown by a servant half my size?"A soft laugh escaped him."No. That would be embarrassing."Relief washed over her. One less thing to worry about. He hadn't told her who he was, but she already had a vague guess. It would be unfortunate if he reported her for throwing him. She couldn't afford any more attention from Maude. As the thought crossed her mind, her gaze fell on his face again, thoughtful. He looked around u

Esme dropped the lantern, grabbed the figure's arm, pivoted— —and threw them over her shoulder in a clean, fluid motion. Thud. The figure hit the floor hard, the impact echoing through the hall. Esme stepped back immediately, breathing fast, her fists still raised, expression full of alertness. The lantern had rolled a few feet away, still flickering from time to time. Its light gradually caught the figure's face. It was a young man. Maybe about twenty-two. He had slightly disheveled black hair which fell across his forehead, sharp prominent features, and pale skin. His eyes were widened, but not with fear. With surprise. And something like fascination. After the shock of being slammed into the ground quickly receded, he flipped over to look at her. He was sprawled on the floor, propped on one elbow, staring up at her. Esme stared back alertly, her mind running in circles already. The stranger seemed further amused by her reaction. A low, breathless laugh escaped his lip

"Seraphine..."Esme didn't turn. She looked as calm as usual, but perhaps out of guilt, Linny felt that she seemed rather oppressive and unapproachable even from the back. Her voice instantly broke, stuttering."I'm so sorry—I didn't mean—I was just—"Esme's voice was cold and monotonous."You lied."Linny flinched as if she'd been slapped."I was scared—"Esme finally turned to look at her.Her expression was calm. Her eyes were hard, distant."I know."That made Linny feel even more helpless, and she wept harder. After a moment, she looked at Esme carefully."Then—"Esme cut in. "That doesn't change what happened."Linny's mouth instantly shut. The tears spilled faster, her shoulders shaking."I'm sorry—I'm so sorry—"Esme didn't soften. She just stood there, watching her with that same cold, detached expression."Go to bed, Linny."Linny immediately panicked. Her voice came out desperate and pleading."Let me help—I'll come to the storage hall—I'll help you clean—""No.""Please—"

Ida stumbled backward, arms flailing as she fought to catch her balance. Her boot slipped on the wet stone, and for a moment, it looked like she'd fall. She didn't.She caught herself against the wall, chest heaving, face flushed crimson. Her companion gasped loudly, a hand flying to her mouth. It only took a moment for Ida to recover. Her eyes blazed as she whirled on Esme."You again?!" she spat. "Do you have a death wish?!"Esme didn't answer. She crouched beside Linny, her focus entirely on the trembling girl. Linny's hand was still pressed against her chest, fingers curled protectively. Angry, dark, swollen red marks lined her knuckles where Ida's boot had ground down."Are you hurt?" Esme asked quietly, her lips pressing into a thin line once she saw the marks littered over Linny's skin.Linny nodded, tears streaming freely now. She tried to speak, but only a choked sound came out.Esme's jaw tightened.Behind her, Ida was seething, pointing a shaking finger at Esme."You just a

Dawn. The door slammed open. The sound cracked through the shed like a whip, jolting every girl from sleep. A few gasped. One sat up so fast she nearly toppled from her bunk.Maude stood in the doorway, silhouetted against the predawn darkness, a single lantern casting harsh shadows across her face."UP! All of you! You have until the incense burns halfway to assemble outside."She didn't wait for responses. The door slammed shut again with the same brutal finality.Chaos erupted immediately. The girls jolted awake and scrambled panickedly from their bunks, blankets tangling around their legs. Someone tripped with a muffled curse. Another knocked her head against the bunk frame with a sharp cry. Within seconds, the shed filled with frantic rustling as everyone rushed to get ready.Esme was already sitting up by the time Maude finished speaking. She had never been a deep sleeper, and her internal clock was set to 5 a.m. Not to mention, the bed was made of planks—nothing like the soft,
