I stared at the number above Cardo's head, dazed.

He took off his coat and hung it on the right side of the entryway like always, then opened his arms and pulled me into a hug, pressing a kiss to my cheek.

"Why are you still up?"

He walked over and reached out to touch my face.

His palm was warm, his fingertips rough with the faint calluses years of holding a gun had left behind.

I hurriedly hid the pregnancy report behind my back and forced a smile.

"Tomorrow's our anniversary. Do you remember?"

Cardo smiled and pinched my cheek affectionately.

"Of course I remember. I already booked the restaurant. Seven o'clock, that waterfront table on the Hudson River you love."

"Phone off, no family business, no seeing anyone. The whole night is yours. Deal?"

The next second, the phone on the coffee table buzzed.

The screen lit up. The caller ID showed a single letter: C.

The moment Cardo saw it, he visibly tensed.

He picked up the phone and walked out to the balcony. Before the glass door slid shut, I heard a woman's panicked sobbing on the other end.

A few minutes later, Cardo came back in and grabbed the coat he'd just taken off.

"Something's come up on Camilla's end. I have to go over there."

I looked at him.

"It's one in the morning. Can't it wait until tomorrow?"

"Rival crews are looking for them. Ellie's home too. As Don, I can't just ignore it."

His tone was patient, like he was explaining family rules to a clueless outsider.

"Go to sleep. Don't wait up."

Again, that faint trace of rose on his cuff.

I didn't understand. "Can't you just assign her a bodyguard?"

Cardo frowned.

"Sweetheart, I'm the Don."

"Marco died for me. Protecting his family is my responsibility."

I looked at the number above his head and suddenly didn't want to ask anymore.

For seven years of marriage, I'd done exactly what a Donna was supposed to do.

When he worked into the early hours, I warmed his milk and made him a late-night meal.

When he went days without coming home for family meetings, I packed his clothes for him.

He expanded the business, protected the family, and never once got tangled up with a subordinate's widow.

I used to be proud of his boundaries, his restraint.

But somewhere along the way, his sense of duty had crossed the line of family rules and crept into late nights, holidays, and the life that was supposed to belong to just the two of us.

"Go."

I stepped aside to let him through.

Cardo seemed caught off guard that I'd agreed. He froze for two seconds, then bent down and kissed my forehead.

"I'll be back soon."

The moment he left, the number plummeted to three. A red three. Because I'd made up my mind. I'd decided to let go.

The house went quiet again.

I stood in the entryway, looking at the photo on the shoe cabinet, the one from our trip to Palermo.

In it, Cardo was holding me, smiling like he had the most precious treasure in the world.

Back then, his sudden embrace had scared me. I told him to be careful, not to drop me.

He said he wouldn't. He said as long as he held on tight, he'd never let go.

I went back to the bedroom and called my college classmate Rachel Donnelly.

She's a divorce attorney now, and the only old friend I still keep in touch with in New York.

The phone rang a long time before she picked up.

"Viv, calling this late? What's wrong?"

I looked at the half-empty bed, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Draw up a divorce agreement for me."

Three months later, using the first royalty payment from my new picture book, I bought a studio of my own on the West Coast. It wasn't spacious, but it had a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.I kept my little deer necklace. The fine crack along its side was still clearly visible, but I never once thought of covering it with an expensive gem or replacing it.On the day of the new book's national release, the publisher sent a batch of donated copies to several partner public legal aid organizations across the country. On the recipient list was the legal aid foundation for abused minors where Cardo now worked. He didn't send any letter through it, didn't have anyone pass along a single word, and never appeared at any corner of my book tour.I named the new picture book The Meaning of Setting Out.It tells the story of a girl who, after a great loss and upheaval, finds the courage again to embrace the world with a smile. There's no endless waiting in the story, and no dramatic reunion

  • Until the Infinity Ran Out   Chapter 16

On the day of the art gala, Cardo arrived near the venue before dawn.He stayed alone in an ordinary hotel two blocks away. This time, he didn't take a private jet, didn't use a mafia motorcade, and didn't use any elevator that might malfunction. At six in the morning, he walked step by step along the streets of Los Angeles to the main entrance of the arts center. There were still a full four hours before the gala officially began. He wore a very low-key dark trench coat and carried only water and black coffee. He sat quietly on a bench at the street corner, his eyes never once leaving the front entrance. While he waited, he didn't call the organizing committee, didn't use any of his old underworld pressure, and didn't have anyone slip his name into the VIP backstage. This time, he didn't want to use the surname "Falcone," the name that once made everyone afraid, or his connections, to force any kind of response from me.He just wanted to look at me from a distance, in the open sunligh

Cardo began rooting out the traitors who had caused Marco's death, and he reinvestigated Marco's family. When he got to Camilla, he found that she had five properties under her name, all equipped with top-level security systems. The dates on the property registrations were long before she'd reached out to Cardo. And Ellie didn't have the severe PTSD Camilla had claimed. She wouldn't be in life-threatening danger from ordinary crying or insomnia. Most critically, Camilla came from a mafia family in the South. After Marco died, her family had sent people three separate times to offer her and her daughter the highest level of family protection and living arrangements, and every single time, she'd flatly refused. The only protection she'd ever accepted was Cardo's.Cardo met Camilla at a café.When she saw the property deeds, the medical evaluations, and the negotiation letters from her family's side spread across the table, Camilla's face went instantly pale.First she denied it frantical

The online storm soon reached me.Countless accounts attacked my Instagram relentlessly. Some even came to my Los Angeles studio late at night to splash red paint on the door, spray insulting graffiti, and shout that I, the "Don's abandoned canary," should crawl back to the underworld.I did nothing. I didn't respond on any public platform.I knew all too well what a so-called "public clarification" would turn into. The moment I stood up and said he hadn't been physically unfaithful, everyone would assume that the emotional cold violence and marginalization I'd endured in the bloody world of the mafia could all be forgiven. The moment I showed even a trace of having once loved him deeply, countless onlookers would be generous on my behalf, urging me to return to that golden cage for the sake of the family's interests. But whether or not he'd been physically unfaithful had never been the only reason I left so decisively.Rachel handled all the legal side of the defamation. She issued a

But as Vivian became famous at major art exhibitions across the country, she quickly drew the jealousy and malicious suppression of her peers. Her wedding photo with Cardo, photos of Cardo out to dinner with Camilla and Ellie, and photos of the argument at the hospital went viral on social media.Everyone was talking about how this emerging artist was "the Don's abandoned canary.""After being dumped by the mafia, she can only sell her talent in the art world as a failed canary. What a familiar script.""She can't even manage her own marriage, and now she's playing the sympathy card to beg the foundation for handouts…"Some even spliced her old society wedding photos together with her current signing ceremony, maliciously spreading rumors that she'd been thrown out of the family for bad conduct. These malicious smears weren't just aimed at Vivian. They quickly sent shockwaves through the Falcone family. The family elders had already started whispering behind closed doors, even spreadin

  • Until the Infinity Ran Out   Chapter 12

After the second missed chance, Cardo gave up entirely on using any means to find out where Vivian was staying. He extended his stay for half a month at a hotel two streets from the arts center in downtown Los Angeles.Every morning, he passed the arts center plaza, but he strictly kept his oath and never set foot in the residents' office area.Sometimes on the crowded streets of Los Angeles, he'd suddenly spot a slender figure in the crowd who looked so much like Vivian, but every time he chased after her with no regard for anything, the person who turned around was always a stranger's face.He stopped hoping for luck. He just quietly followed the public schedule posted by the Los Angeles Public Arts Foundation.Half a month later, the Los Angeles Central Library was hosting a public art illustration sharing session, and Vivian's name appeared on the guest list again. On the day of the event, Cardo arrived an hour early. He sat in the corner of the last row of the lecture hall. But as
