Chapter 7

Author: Shirley
"Of course you do!" Hope reignited in my mentor's eyes. "That's wonderful news. It's a tragedy that your talent is trapped in these bloody family games."

"When are you leaving? If you need anything, don't hesitate to call me."

His words were the best thing that had happened to me all day.

After bidding my mentor farewell, I didn't go back to the estate. I went directly to the family's law firm.

"Hello, I want to dissolve an alliance. Please draft two agreements for me."

One was an alliance dissolution agreement, the other a divorce decree.

The lawyer was shocked, but at my insistence, he drafted the documents as requested.

I read every word carefully, and after confirming everything was correct, I signed both documents without hesitation.

When I returned to the estate, I was surprised to find both Kieran and Camilla in the living room.

Just a few days ago, Kieran had said she wouldn't be back. He was truly playing me for a fool.

At this point, I couldn't be bothered to ask why she was here again. I glanced at them and headed straight for the bedroom.

But Kieran frowned and spoke up. "Where have you been? You're back so late."

"I was meeting a friend," I lied casually.

"Which friend?" Kieran wasn't letting it go.

I don't know why, but lately, he had become strangely curious about everything I did.

If this had happened six months ago, I might have been ecstatic. But now, I just found him annoying.

He had a point, though. In the three years I'd been married to him, my entire life had revolved around him. I didn't have any friends.

Moreover, my style of dress had changed recently. My clothes were getting looser and looser, which he must have found strange.

I was trying to think of an excuse when Camilla came over, a sweet smile on her face. "Scarlett, you're just in time!"

"Tomorrow is the Marcelli family's reconciliation horse race. You must be bored at home alone. Why don't you come with us? It'll be a chance to get out of the house and socialize."

I was about to refuse, but Kieran spoke first. "Yes, you should both go. You can look out for each other."

Camilla immediately took my arm. To protect my baby, I couldn't pull away too hard, so I just nodded in agreement.

The horse race was held at a private track.

The venue was lavishly decorated, and members of all the major families were present.

Camilla and I sat in the VIP box, with Kieran behind us, talking to a few Capos.

"Kieran, do you remember the first time we came here to watch the races?" Camilla suddenly turned to Kieran, her voice filled with nostalgia.

Everyone around them stopped talking and looked at them curiously.

I rarely attended public social events with Kieran, so many people in the box didn't know me. They just assumed I was the daughter of some famiglia and paid me no mind.

But everyone recognized Kieran and Camilla, the golden couple of the New York Mafia scene. It was an open secret that the Underboss's marriage was just for show.

"You told me back then that if my favorite horse won, you'd grant me one wish," Camilla continued, her eyes sparkling.

The people around them started to tease. "Did the horse win?"

"Of course it did!" Camilla laughed. "And Kieran promised to take me to see the Northern Lights in Iceland."

"Wow, how romantic!"

"Kieran is so devoted to Camilla."

"You have no idea. Kieran used to have a diary, and it was filled with Camilla's name!"

Listening to their chatter, I felt a wave of nausea. I couldn't tell if it was morning sickness or if I was just disgusted by them.

I just never expected that Kieran, a man so cold and controlled, would have a love for Camilla so well-known.

Perhaps that was why he could never forget her.

Seeing the color drain from my face, Camilla looked triumphant, but she leaned in close and feigned concern. "Scarlett, I didn't mean anything by it, really. It's just..."

"I know," I cut her off, my voice flat. I stood up to head to the parking lot.

But Camilla thought I was angry and grabbed my hand.

In the late stages of my pregnancy, I was easily tired. I had no energy to argue with her. I just wanted her to let me go.

I was about to pry her hand off when a rush of footsteps sounded from outside the box.

Then, several masked gunmen burst in, the sharp click-clack of their rifles filling the air.

"Everyone on the floor! Move and I'll blow your heads off!"

The scene erupted into chaos and screams.

Everyone finally understood. The so-called reconciliation with the Marcelli family was a massive revenge plot.

As a gunman raised his submachine gun to open fire, Kieran's first instinct was to throw himself over Camilla.

He shielded her with his own body.

Meanwhile, I, pregnant, was knocked down by the panicking crowd, left exposed in the line of fire.

A bullet grazed my arm, leaving a searing, bloody trail.

I was pushed to the ground by the frantic crowd, and a sharp pain shot through my abdomen.

I couldn't help but cry out, my hands protectively clutching my stomach.

Blood gushed from the wound, staining the expensive Persian rug beneath me.

Kieran held Camilla tightly, and only after confirming she was unharmed did he finally see me, lying in a pool of blood amidst the chaos.

His face paled. "Scarlett!"

But he still didn't let go of Camilla.

"I'm fine. Get Camilla out of here," I managed to say, forcing myself to sit up. Blood was seeping from the wound on my arm.

Kieran swept up Camilla and ran for the door. As he reached it, he yelled to the family doctor who was rushing in.

"Check on Camilla first! She's terrified!"

The doctor was immediately swamped by Camilla, who was sobbing hysterically, claiming she couldn't breathe and her heart was racing.

And I sat alone in a pool of my own blood, the pain in my abdomen growing more intense.

With my medical knowledge, I knew what was happening. I was going into premature labor.

Kieran hid in the shadows like a pathetic ghost, watching a joy that would never be his.He saw me smiling radiantly, running into Enzo's arms with the acceptance letter. He saw me take the pink diamond from around my neck, kiss it, then slip it from the cord and onto my ring finger before looking at Enzo with a sweet, radiant smile."Enzo, let's be together!""Yes!"We hugged tightly, and Enzo spun me around several times, like a child who had just been given candy.Kieran watched this scene, silently tucking the gift he had brought back into his pocket. He lowered his head, pulling his hat down, trying to melt into the crowd. The Scarlett of today was so dazzling, exactly the version of her that had first captured his heart. It was the marriage, the prison of the Thompson family, that had trapped her. It had made her insecure and anxious, forcing her to abandon her passions and career to revolve around him alone. It was all his fault.Kieran's eyes welled up with tears. If she hadn't

After such a heart-wrenching marriage, I couldn't throw myself into a new relationship so soon. Moreover, that unequal waiting, that daily erosion of the soul, I never wanted to experience it again. My career had not yet restarted, and I had too much I wanted to do. I couldn't be bound by another relationship so quickly.Enzo seemed to see through my thoughts and didn't press me.But he still pressed the pink diamond into my palm."My heart is in your hands now. Throw it away if you want; I won't stop you. But I will wait for you, until the day you give me an answer."He spoke the most sincere words in an almost joking tone.I clutched the ring tightly, afraid of losing it.I found a silk cord, threaded it through the ring, and wore it around my neck.Seeing the pink diamond resting against my heart, Enzo's lips curved into an imperceptible smile. It was as if his heart was pressed against mine.As we turned to leave, a familiar figure blocked our path.Kieran stood against the light,

Kieran slowly turned and walked step by step until he was in front of Camilla. He lifted her chin, the words he spoke colder than a Sicilian winter."Camilla, the fall of the Russo family was your own doing, not mine.""I was going to let you go, but now, I've changed my mind. Every single thing you took from Scarlett, you will pay back, twofold.""If it weren't for you, Scarlett and I could have... My mistake was being too merciful with you."Hearing this, Camilla panicked, shaking her head frantically. "No... you can't do this to me... Kieran, you can't..."But there was no trace of old affection in Kieran's eyes. He dialed his men."Seize everything she owns. Liquidate everything she got from Scarlett, convert it to market value, and make her pay.""And recreate the shooting at the horse race. Let her feel a bullet whistle past her ear.""Finally, make her walk that gravel path barefoot in the middle of a storm."The man on the other end of the line confirmed the orders. In moments,

Kieran's lips trembled, but no words came.He knew I was telling the truth but refused to accept his final defeat."Scarlett," he said, as if to himself, his voice hollow. "If you don't want to go back to New York for now, I'll stay here with you. Until you're willing to come with me."Enzo looked at him with contempt. "Mr. Thompson, I suggest you return to New York. You're not welcome here."Kieran ignored Enzo, his eyes fixed on me."I won't give up, Scarlett."With that, he turned and fled, his retreat somewhat pathetic, somewhat desolate.Watching him flee, Enzo's voice sounded in my ear."Do you need my family's power and legal assistance?"I was silent for a long moment, then nodded."I do."I wasn't a fool. The resources Enzo Bellini could mobilize were far greater than anything I could muster. With his help, I could sever these ties as quickly as possible. As expected, with Enzo's intervention, the so-called mediation was quickly convened. It was more decisive than any court.I

"I actually... I love you, Scarlett. I love you, I just... I was too damn late to realize it... I'm sorry..."He was rambling, his eyes bloodshot, his voice trembling. He took a step forward, grabbing my hands, trying to pull me into his arms. Before I could even resist, Enzo's hand had clamped down on Kieran's wrist, forcing him to let go with an undeniable strength."What's this?" Enzo's lips curved into a dangerous smile, murder glinting in his eyes. "The boy's father hasn't said a word, and you're already trying to claim my woman and my son?""To dare touch my people in Chicago, on my turf... you're the first."His grip tightened. I could hear the sickening crunch of Kieran's wrist bones, and his face instantly turned pale. The two men were at a standoff, neither willing to back down.I frowned in disgust, twisted my wrist, and with a precise movement, pulled my hand free from between them."Kieran, I don't care what you think," my voice was devoid of warmth. Hearing the bodyguard's voice, I snapped back to reality and shoved Enzo away.Enzo just gave a wicked smile, his tongue slowly tracing his lower lip as if savoring the taste of me.He paid no mind to his disheveled shirt and reached for the door."Wait!"I quickly stopped him, my hand pressing down on his as he gripped the doorknob."What is it, Principessa?" His deep voice held a hint of amusement. "Not enough?""Your shirt... it's a mess," I said, my face burning as I avoided his gaze.Enzo simply held out his hands, the meaning clear. The amusement in his eyes deepened. "You made this mess. It's only fair that you fix it."The frantic images from moments ago flashed through my mind. I bit my lip in shame and reached out to smooth the wrinkles on his shirt. My fingertips brushed against the scorching heat of his chest, and a jolt of electricity shot through me.But I, the one who had caused it, was too flustered to think about it.Enzo's gaze darkened, his Adam's apple bobbed violen
