Chapter 8

Author: Shirley
My water had broken. The contractions were coming in regular waves.

My baby was coming into the world early.

With all my strength, I pulled out my phone and dialed the Valerio family's emergency number.

"This is Scarlett. I'm at the Long Island racetrack. I need to get to a hospital immediately... I'm going into labor..."

The other end of the line exploded into chaos. In less than ten minutes, men from the Valerio family stormed the venue.

They quickly placed me on a stretcher and rushed me to a private hospital controlled by my family.

In the ambulance, I gritted my teeth through the pain. The paramedics were performing emergency procedures, but the situation was dire.

Meanwhile, Kieran was busy comforting a frightened Camilla, inspecting a tiny, insignificant scratch on her neck.

"Don't be afraid. I'm here," he whispered, stroking her hair.

One of his men ran up to him. "Boss, a pregnant woman was hit by a stray bullet. Her condition is critical. The Valerios have taken her for an emergency delivery."

Only then did Kieran remember that he hadn't seen me. A knot of unease tightened in his chest, and he reached for his phone to check on me.

"Kieran!" Camilla suddenly shrieked. "I'm so scared. Don't leave me!"

She clung to his arm, tears streaming down her face like a broken string of pearls.

Kieran's hand froze mid-air. In the end, he put his phone away.

"I won't leave you."

The call was never made.

Twenty-four hours later, I woke up in the Valerio family's private hospital.

A nurse walked over, holding a tiny infant.

"Congratulations, Principessa. He's a healthy boy."

Looking into his deep eyes, I couldn't help but think of the man I had randomly picked at the club.

I was drunk and hazy that night, and the club was so dark I never saw his face.

I just had a gut feeling that a one-night stand with a man that tall and well-built couldn't be a bad thing.

Now, seeing my baby's perfect features, a flicker of curiosity arose in me.

That man must have been quite handsome.

How else could we have created such a beautiful baby?

I carefully reached out a finger and stroked the baby's soft, silk-like hand. Tears rolled down my cheeks uncontrollably.

"My love, thank you for coming. You've given me the key to my freedom."

Leo Valerio. That would be his name.

No Thompson. Only a Valerio.

I stayed at the Valerio private hospital for a week, letting my body recover.

The day I was discharged, I received a text from Kieran.

"Camilla is emotionally fragile right now. I'm taking her to Europe for a while to recover."

My expression was placid. I simply replied, "Noted."

There was not a single flicker of emotion.

It was better that he wasn't at the estate. It saved me the trouble of explaining things.

Back at the estate, I placed the signed dissolution agreement on the desk in Kieran's study, right where he handled family business.

So he would see it the moment he returned.

Then, holding Leo, I pulled my suitcase and walked out of the place I had called home for three years.

A driver took us to JFK International Airport.

I had bought a ticket to Chicago, where a friend from college lived. I could stay there for a while.

But my luck was terrible. While waiting for my flight, I saw two familiar figures.

Kieran and Camilla were standing at the VIP entrance not far away.

They were heading to Paris. Camilla was holding Kieran's arm, smiling happily.

I immediately turned away, holding Leo tighter.

Kieran seemed to sense something and glanced back, but the terminal was bustling. He just shook his head.

"Impossible," he muttered to himself. "She's safe at the estate. I must be seeing things."

I watched from a corner as he picked up his phone.

My phone, in my pocket, buzzed.

"Do you want any gifts? I'll bring something back for you from Paris."

I looked at the message and thought of all his empty promises.

But it was all too late.

I turned and walked towards the boarding gate, replying simply: "No need."

The plane was about to take off, and the flight attendant was urging passengers to turn off their phones.

I held a sleeping Leo and said softly to the flight attendant, "Just one moment. I have to send one last message."

I took Leo's birth certificate from my bag and snapped a picture of it.

Then, I sent the photo to five people.

The Don of the Thompson family, Kieran's father.

My father, the Don of the Valerio family.

The Consiglieres of both families.

And finally, to Kieran himself.

[I had the baby. He isn't yours.]

[Our alliance and our marriage are over. Don't look for me.]

The moment the message sent, I blocked and deleted all their contact information without hesitation, and pulled out the SIM card.

The plane's engines roared as it lifted off the runway.

Through the window, I watched New York City shrink below, a feeling of immense relief washing over me.

From this day forward, Kieran Thompson and I had nothing to do with each other.

Kieran hid in the shadows like a pathetic ghost, watching a joy that would never be his.He saw me smiling radiantly, running into Enzo's arms with the acceptance letter. He saw me take the pink diamond from around my neck, kiss it, then slip it from the cord and onto my ring finger before looking at Enzo with a sweet, radiant smile."Enzo, let's be together!""Yes!"We hugged tightly, and Enzo spun me around several times, like a child who had just been given candy.Kieran watched this scene, silently tucking the gift he had brought back into his pocket. He lowered his head, pulling his hat down, trying to melt into the crowd. The Scarlett of today was so dazzling, exactly the version of her that had first captured his heart. It was the marriage, the prison of the Thompson family, that had trapped her. It had made her insecure and anxious, forcing her to abandon her passions and career to revolve around him alone. It was all his fault.Kieran's eyes welled up with tears. If she hadn't

After such a heart-wrenching marriage, I couldn't throw myself into a new relationship so soon. Moreover, that unequal waiting, that daily erosion of the soul, I never wanted to experience it again. My career had not yet restarted, and I had too much I wanted to do. I couldn't be bound by another relationship so quickly.Enzo seemed to see through my thoughts and didn't press me.But he still pressed the pink diamond into my palm."My heart is in your hands now. Throw it away if you want; I won't stop you. But I will wait for you, until the day you give me an answer."He spoke the most sincere words in an almost joking tone.I clutched the ring tightly, afraid of losing it.I found a silk cord, threaded it through the ring, and wore it around my neck.Seeing the pink diamond resting against my heart, Enzo's lips curved into an imperceptible smile. It was as if his heart was pressed against mine.As we turned to leave, a familiar figure blocked our path.Kieran stood against the light,

Kieran slowly turned and walked step by step until he was in front of Camilla. He lifted her chin, the words he spoke colder than a Sicilian winter."Camilla, the fall of the Russo family was your own doing, not mine.""I was going to let you go, but now, I've changed my mind. Every single thing you took from Scarlett, you will pay back, twofold.""If it weren't for you, Scarlett and I could have... My mistake was being too merciful with you."Hearing this, Camilla panicked, shaking her head frantically. "No... you can't do this to me... Kieran, you can't..."But there was no trace of old affection in Kieran's eyes. He dialed his men."Seize everything she owns. Liquidate everything she got from Scarlett, convert it to market value, and make her pay.""And recreate the shooting at the horse race. Let her feel a bullet whistle past her ear.""Finally, make her walk that gravel path barefoot in the middle of a storm."The man on the other end of the line confirmed the orders. In moments,

Kieran's lips trembled, but no words came.He knew I was telling the truth but refused to accept his final defeat."Scarlett," he said, as if to himself, his voice hollow. "If you don't want to go back to New York for now, I'll stay here with you. Until you're willing to come with me."Enzo looked at him with contempt. "Mr. Thompson, I suggest you return to New York. You're not welcome here."Kieran ignored Enzo, his eyes fixed on me."I won't give up, Scarlett."With that, he turned and fled, his retreat somewhat pathetic, somewhat desolate.Watching him flee, Enzo's voice sounded in my ear."Do you need my family's power and legal assistance?"I was silent for a long moment, then nodded."I do."I wasn't a fool. The resources Enzo Bellini could mobilize were far greater than anything I could muster. With his help, I could sever these ties as quickly as possible. As expected, with Enzo's intervention, the so-called mediation was quickly convened. It was more decisive than any court.I

"I actually... I love you, Scarlett. I love you, I just... I was too damn late to realize it... I'm sorry..."He was rambling, his eyes bloodshot, his voice trembling. He took a step forward, grabbing my hands, trying to pull me into his arms. Before I could even resist, Enzo's hand had clamped down on Kieran's wrist, forcing him to let go with an undeniable strength."What's this?" Enzo's lips curved into a dangerous smile, murder glinting in his eyes. "The boy's father hasn't said a word, and you're already trying to claim my woman and my son?""To dare touch my people in Chicago, on my turf... you're the first."His grip tightened. I could hear the sickening crunch of Kieran's wrist bones, and his face instantly turned pale. The two men were at a standoff, neither willing to back down.I frowned in disgust, twisted my wrist, and with a precise movement, pulled my hand free from between them."Kieran, I don't care what you think," my voice was devoid of warmth. "Whether you love me o

Hearing the bodyguard's voice, I snapped back to reality and shoved Enzo away.Enzo just gave a wicked smile, his tongue slowly tracing his lower lip as if savoring the taste of me.He paid no mind to his disheveled shirt and reached for the door."Wait!"I quickly stopped him, my hand pressing down on his as he gripped the doorknob."What is it, Principessa?" His deep voice held a hint of amusement. "Not enough?""Your shirt... it's a mess," I said, my face burning as I avoided his gaze.Enzo simply held out his hands, the meaning clear. The amusement in his eyes deepened. "You made this mess. It's only fair that you fix it."The frantic images from moments ago flashed through my mind. I bit my lip in shame and reached out to smooth the wrinkles on his shirt. My fingertips brushed against the scorching heat of his chest, and a jolt of electricity shot through me.But I, the one who had caused it, was too flustered to think about it.Enzo's gaze darkened, his Adam's apple bobbed violen
