Romy returned to the thirty-seventh floor shortly after five and found Devon outside 3702.

He was not carrying food or a file that needed her signature. He stood several feet from her door, leaving enough space for her to decide whether she wanted to stop.

“Were you waiting for me?” she asked.

“Yes.” Devon put his phone into his coat pocket. “I wanted to ask whether you would object if I travelled to Sheffield.”

Romy rested her key card against the lock but did not open the door. “As a sponsor?

The revolving doors opened before Caroline could answer.A young woman wearing a sponsor credential hurried into the lobby. Her hair had slipped loose from its clip, and she was breathing hard. In one hand, she held a plastic event credential. In the other were several stamped forms.“Miss Thorne.” She stopped beside Caroline and passed her the documents. “It’s done. The association restored Miss Palmer’s reserve status. Her name is back on the final list.”The tension in Liam’s shoulders did not disappear, but it changed.Caroline checked the credential before holding it out to Devon. “You don’t have to take my word for it. Check it yourself.”Devon accepted it.Romy’s name, athlete number, and reserve status were printed correctly beneath the event logo. The approval time showed that Caroline’s assistant had reached the association desk before the replacement coach arrived at the hotel. For the first time since the confrontation began, Devon hesitated.Caroline had been part of his

Devon’s reply appeared before Romy’s lift reached the eighth floor.Twelfth.She read the single word, then typed before she could reconsider the invitation.I’m on eight. The briefing ends at 1:40. Coffee in the lobby before we leave for the arena?Three dots appeared, vanished, and appeared again before he answered that he would be there. Romy put the phone away, but the quiet satisfaction followed her into the room.At two, Devon found her at a small bar table the side of the hotel lobby. He had changed his wet shirt and coat, though the ends of his hair were still damp. Two cups waited between them.“It might be a bit different from the way you’d have a coffee at Kensington Manor, but I’d like to invite you to try the swimming team’s custom.” Romy added a small amount of milk and pushed the wrapped biscuit from her team snack pack across the table. “Your reward for surviving a coach journey. The coffee is an apology. You could have travelled in your own car.”Devon rested two fing

As the one who stayed, Devon called Caroline while they waited for the car. He kept the phone at his ear, but the service area was quiet enough for Romy to hear Caroline’s answer when he asked her to send the sponsor vehicle back.“The media crew has a fixed installation window,” Caroline said. “If we turn around now, the campaign screens will not be ready for the press walkthrough.”Devon’s jaw shifted. “The team is standing beside a broken coach.”“The active swimmers have transport. Romy is not competing unless someone withdraws, and the others are not required until later. My responsibility is the sponsor presentation.” Caroline spoke without raising her voice. She did not need to. She had already decided which problem mattered to her. “We will see you at the hotel.”The call ended before Devon could answer.Sophia watched his car enter the service area. Her face had been unusually bright since breakfast, and she rolled her shoulders as if she had too much energy to stand still. W

Four days passed between the team test and the journey north. At 6:52 on Thursday morning, Liam stood beside the open door of the team coach with a clipboard in one hand and Romy’s Sheffield folder in the other. He had already directed the relay swimmers toward the back and moved two equipment bags off the second row. When Romy reached the steps, he tapped the empty window seat with the end of his pen. “Sit here.”Romy looked past him. Anny sat one row behind with headphones around her neck. Sophia had taken the opposite window seat and kept one hand on the zipped side pocket of her kit bag. Next to the aisle seat next to the window seat Liam had pointed out to her was a dark blue bag, and Romi recognized it as his.“You saved me a seat before seven in the morning,” Romy said as she climbed aboard. “The team is going to accuse you of favoritism again.”Liam set her folder on the tray table. “They can accuse me after you know every substitution deadline.” The familiar certainty in his

Yanxi’s companion touched his sleeve when he stopped beside Devon’s table. “Our table is ready.”“I know.” Yanxi gave her an apologetic smile before looking back at Devon and Romy. “Give me a minute. I have not seen him outside a boardroom in months.”Yanxi and Devon had grown up in the same schools, family dinners, and charity functions. They had argued over cars before either could drive. Walking past without speaking would have been stranger than stopping. The woman beside Yanxi laughed. Yanxi turned to Romy. “Congratulations on making the Sheffield team. Becoming the reserve after less than two weeks is impressive.” Romy thanked him without pretending the position was more than it was.Yanxi’s companion followed the hostess after he promised to join her shortly. Devon indicated the empty chair, offering an old friend the courtesy of a brief drink.Yanxi sat but ignored the wine list. Devon was listening when Romy spoke, and the new ease between them did not look false.“This is un

Sheffield would allow me to observe event operations, athlete accommodation, and the commercial structure around a national-level meet.” His explanation arrived with the polished completeness of something prepared before she reached the corridor.Romy turned to face him. “You want to come because I’m going.”Devon was silent for a moment. “That is also true.”“It is the only part of that speech you needed.” Her mout
