Chapter 13: The Breaking Point

Deborah’s POV

“The way you creep your way around campus, sucking up to all the hot guys by becoming their pathetic little slave, I mean,” Olivia paused, her tone sweet but her eyes sharp, shaking her head as she looked at me with disdain, “do you have any self-respect?” she asked.

Her voice wasn’t loud, but every word carried weight. Each syllable landed like a slap, slow and deliberate, drawing the attention of a few passing students who slowed their steps but didn’t stop. The air in the common room felt still, heavy, as though it had absorbed the venom in her words.

So I do my job as an assistant—which basically revolves around team management, at least whatever the coach allows me to handle—and Olivia sees that as being a slave? I asked myself silently, biting the inside of my cheek.

Even though I got the job because I wanted to be close to Caleb, I still took my job very seriously. I organized schedules, helped manage logistics, and even handled reports. I was proud of what I did

‘What if everyone laughs at me? What if this was all a terrible mistake? Maybe I'll be better off dying a virgin.’ The thoughts barraged my mind as I stepped out of the vehicle Liam had arranged for me.My legs felt like jelly beneath the flowing midnight blue fabric of my dress. The cool evening air kissed my bare shoulders, and I fought the urge to pull the wrap Maya had draped around me tighter. Every instinct screamed at me to climb back into the car and tell the driver to take me home, where I could hide under my covers and pretend this night never happened. But the car was already pulling away, its red taillights disappearing into the distance like my last chance at escape.I stood on the curved driveway of the country club, staring up at the grand entrance with its towering columns and warm golden light spilling from every window. Music drifted out each time the heavy doors opened, a mix of laughter and conversation that made my stomach clench with nerves. This was it. No turni

Deborah’s POV I was still in my pajamas, nursing my second cup of coffee and trying to convince myself that today was really happening, when Liam knocked on my door. Three sharp raps, confident and demanding attention just like everything else about him."Come in," I called, pulling my robe tighter around myself. He entered with that easy stride of his, looking disgustingly put together for eight in the morning. His hair was perfectly styled, his clothes wrinkle-free, and he smelled like expensive cologne and morning showers. Meanwhile, I probably looked like I'd been hit by a truck."Morning, sunshine." His eyes swept over my appearance, and I caught the hint of amusement in them. "How did your exam go yesterday?"I blinked at him, momentarily confused. "My exam?""The one you were stressing about all week? Computing Structure, I think?" He had the grace to look sheepish. "Sorry, I meant to ask last night when we were talking, but I got distracted by the whole investigation thing."

Deborah’s POV I pushed open the door to my room, expecting to see the same destruction Olivia had left behind last night. Torn papers scattered like confetti across my floor, books thrown from their shelves, clothes pulled from my closet and trampled underfoot. The memory of finding my sanctuary violated still made my stomach clench. But instead, everything was perfect. My desk sat clean and organized, papers stacked in neat piles. The books that had been thrown across the room were now arranged by height along my bookshelf. The clothes that had been torn from hangers were folded and put away. "What the hell?" The words slipped out before I could catch them. "Language, Deborah." I spun around, my heart jumping into my throat. Liam stood in my doorway, leaning against the frame with that infuriating smirk of his. But what made my stomach drop wasn't his presence. It was the book in his hands. My book. "Reflected in You" by Sylvia Dayn. The one with the embarrassingly passionate

Third Person POV The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the secluded corner of campus, where old brick buildings met overgrown hedges that hadn't been trimmed in months. The spot was tucked away behind the maintenance shed, far from the usual foot traffic of students heading to and from classes. The air smelled of motor oil and damp earth, mixed with the lingering scent of cigarette smoke that seemed to cling to everything in this forgotten corner of the university.Caleb's heart pounded against his ribs as he heard footsteps approaching on the gravel path. He'd been hoping to cut through this shortcut to avoid the main walkways, but now he realized his mistake. The footsteps were deliberate, heavy, and moving with purpose rather than the casual gait of students."Well, well, look who we found," came a gravelly voice from behind him.Caleb turned slowly, his stomach dropping as he recognized Steve's bulky frame emerging from the shadows between two buildings. Steve was built

Deborah’s POV Olivia's eyes widened, darting around as her hand moved to the spot the punch had hit on her face. The shock in her expression was absolute, like she couldn't believe that sweet, quiet Charlotte had just hit her. Her perfectly manicured fingers trembled as they pressed against her cheek, and I could see the red mark already forming where Charlotte's knuckles had connected. The impact had knocked her slightly off balance, and she stumbled backwards on her designer heels."Did you just—" Olivia started, her voice higher than usual, but the words seemed to stick in her throat. With my eyes wide and my mouth opened in surprise, I turned to look at Charlotte, who looked at me with the same mirrored expression on her face. Her glasses had slipped down her nose from the force of the punch, and her chest was rising and falling rapidly like she couldn't quite believe what she'd just done. A minute ago, she was praising me for my bravery, and now she had done the same. Her small

Deborah’s POV I darted my eyes from Liam and looked back at Charlotte, my heart still racing from that intense eye contact. The fluorescent lights above made everything seem too bright, too exposed, and I was grateful she hadn't noticed that brief eye contact between Liam and I. My palms felt sweaty against the strap of my backpack, and I could still feel the phantom weight of his gaze on my skin.I took a deep breath, the air tasting faintly of floor cleaner and the lingering scent of someone's perfume, as I noted that tomorrow evening was the dance and my poor fashion sense would be permanently taken care of and it would bring me closer to my goal of having Caleb see me as a woman and farther from the player that is Liam. The thought should have been comforting, but it felt hollow in my chest, like I was trying to convince myself of something I wasn't sure I believed anymore."You know what our other classmates call him?" Charlotte asked, making me blink as her voice cut through my
