Chapter 7 – Meeting the Town Folk

As we drove down a road, lined with endless trees and the occasional glimpse of huge houses and mountains, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with how happy I was to be living in such a serene, beautiful place. This was far better than the concrete jungles that I was used to and I would mostly likely never go back.

As we got closer to the shore, I noticed a group of people by the lake, drinking and hanging out around a fire. My nerves immediately kicked in. ‘Please don’t say we’re going there,’ I thought, squeezing my eyes shut. I wasn’t ready to meet new people. But my hopes were dashed as Ethan parked where all the other cars were lined up.

“You didn’t mention anything about a party,” I whispered, glaring at him.

“Would you have come if I did?” he smirked, giving me a sidelong glance.

He had a point. If he’d told me, I probably would’ve barricaded myself in my room. I thought I’d have more time to mentally prepare for meeting a bunch of strangers at school, not now. “Definitely not.”

“Well, if you start walking back to the Inn, you might make it before dark... ‘Hop-along,’” he chuckled

“Ha-ha,” I scoffed at him, shifting my expression from dead serious to a half-hearted smile as a couple of guys approached.

“Ethan, my man! Took you long enough,” said a medium-height guy, probably around Ethan’s age, pulling him into one of those ‘bro’ hugs. He was pretty buff, and even though he wore baggy clothes, you could still tell he was built. His blonde hair peeked out from under his hoodie. The guy next to him, who I recognized as the one who’d been arguing with Ethan under my window, had a similar look, so I guessed they were brothers.

When the first guy saw me, he broke into a big grin I didn’t expect, like he was greeting an old friend. “Hey, I’m Nick,” he said, holding out his hand.

“Hi Nick, I’m Quinn—”

“Hop-along,” Ethan cut in, making my jaw drop as I shot him a death glare. No way was he going to introduce me like that. Just as I was about to tell him off, someone stepped in for me.

“Ethan, you only call girls stupid names when you like them. If you keep it up, I’ll call you out all night,” the other blonde guy warned with a smirk walking with a stern but younger and buff looking guy. “Hey, Quinn, I’m Ash—Ethan’s best buddy, and Nick’s big bro. And this is Marcus.”

I smiled, feeling my face heat up, but when I saw Ethan turn crimson, I was floored. Ethan likes me? We’ve barely known each other a week. There must be a shortage of girls around here, not that he’s not incredibly good-looking, but why the sudden interest in the new girl?

“It’s really nice to meet you guys.” I smiled shyly.

“Come. Let’s introduce you to everyone else-” Marcus said starting to walk towards the others but I quickly cut him off, my anxiety kicking into high gear.

“Uh wait…I…don’t really make friends easily…I’m kind of awkward around a lot of people,” I muttered annoyed at myself for sounding so lame. It was like I could feel my soul deep inside scream at me for sounding like a loser.

“Nick, unfazed, chirped happily, “Oh, don’t worry about that!” He surprised me by grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the group. “They’re cool, and you’ll be fine! If anyone gives you trouble, they’ll answer to me.”

Oddly, his words comforted me, even though I was a little suspicious of how friendly he was. Maybe that’s just how people are around here?

As we got closer to several other guys and girls, he shouted louder than I had hoped, “Hey guys, this is Quinn. She’s new to Town and she’s my new friend so yal better be nice!”

I was expecting to be given side-eyes and judgmental looks but to my surprise, everyone smiled and came to introduce themselves. One girl in particular, was super friendly and hugged me tight.

“Hi Quinn! I’m Kimi and I’m happy to show you around sometime if you would like? I know all the coolest places to shop,” she said, practically bouncing with excitement. She was slim, with straight, long blonde hair, and looked super athletic. She had the same features as Nick and Ash, so I pointed between them, raising a brow.

“Brother.”

“Sister,” they answered in unison.

“Ah, got it,” I laughed

Almost everyone had come up to introduce themselves, except one. The moment I saw him, my heart dropped. He was sitting by the fire, his silver-blue eyes locked on mine, and it felt like he could see right into my soul.

It’s like deep inside me, I yearned to be close to him and this magnetic pull had consumed me. There was this magnetic pull, like something inside me wanted to be close to him and I know it sounds dramatic, but I didn’t know how else to explain the power this guy had over me. He had tousled black hair, olive skin, a strong build and even sitting there with his arms wrapped around his knees, I could tell he was tall.

Although the way he gazed at me, made me nervous because it wasn’t friendly at all. He had daggers in his eyes and gave me the deepest scowl anyone has given me.

“Come on, let me introduce you to Luca,” Ethan tugged at my arm pulling me to the very boy who looked like he wished I’d disappear.

“Uh it’s okay we don’t have too...,” I stammered, trying to pull away.

Too late.

I was standing in front of him and he barely glanced up from the fire. Every instinct in me screamed to run – as much as he made me want to faint from the effect he had on me, he clearly did not feel the same way so I wanted to run as far away as possible.

“Quinn, this is my brother, Luca,” Ethan said proudly. “Luca, this is Quinn, the girl who just moved into town,”

‘His brother?!’ I thought in despair. They couldn’t be more different - Ethan had friendly energy bouncing off him whereas his ‘brother’ who even looked younger than Ethan, had bad boy vibes and I could describe him with many words – friendly, not being one of them.

Luca’s cold gaze briefly flicked to me before he turned to Ethan and it was as if he spat out poison with the way his voice sounded. “Why the fuck would you bring her here?”

Not the kind that fades after a few hours or even days. No, this was the kind that buried itself so deep in your bones that it felt like it would be part of you forever. But now… I don’t feel it anymore. The first time I noticed it, I thought I’d gone numb. It wasn’t a slow process either—one day, I was screaming and thrashing under their blows; the next, I just... stopped. The barbed wire bat hit my ribs with a sickening thwack, but I didn’t flinch. The guard cursed under his breath and swung it again, harder this time. Still nothing. My skin tore, and my bones ached, but there was no reaction. No sound. No satisfaction for them.I’d won that day. Not because I fought back. No, because I didn’t. They couldn’t break me anymore. Their weapons, their fists, their fire—none of it mattered.

  • Unwritten Mates    Chapter 63 – Without You

(Luca’s perspective)I used to believe in things like love. Loyalty. Humanity. I thought those things made us strong—made me strong. They didn’t. They made me weak. A fool. A dreamer who thought he could keep his world intact with hope and sheer determination. But hope is a liar.It whispered in my ear for months, telling me she’d come back. That I’d find her. That Quinn would be okay. She wasn’t.I knew it the moment I burned the last picture of her. The edges curled under the flame, the image of her face shrinking into black ash. That photograph was the final piece of her—the last link to the boy I used to be.The boy who searched for her.The boy who loved her.Gone.I stood there, staring into the fire as the smoke curled into the night sky. My hand tightened around the lighter until my knuckles turned white. This was it. The final step.I let the lighter fall into the flames, and with it, I let Quinn go.I used to think I was different from my father. That I could lead this pack

CONTENT WARNING: This chapter contains contents of violence that may disturb sensitive readers and can be triggering for survivors of trauma and abuse.(Quinn’s perspective)I lay on the cold stone floor, the chill biting into my skin, but it was nothing compared to the ache in my bones. Every part of me throbbed, a dull reminder of what I had become—a prisoner, a plaything for the pack to break. My breathing was shallow, each inhale laced with pain. Ribs—probably cracked. Lips—split and crusted with dried blood. Eye—swollen shut. The room stank of iron, sweat, and fear. My fear. Their victory. They’d beaten me again today, just like yesterday. And the day before that. And the day before that.At first, I thought I’d die from it. I hoped I would. Death would’ve been a mercy, an escape. But no. My cursed blood healed me. Every single time. Bones snapped back into place, bruises faded, and cuts stitched themselves together. I was the perfect punching bag—never staying broken long enough

(Luca’s perspective)I’ve faced a lot of crap in my life. Fought battles I wasn’t ready for, took hits that should’ve left me dead, and carried burdens no one else even saw. But this? This was something else entirely.Quinn.Mated. To Cale. The moment he hinted at it—casually, like it was nothing—I felt the air shift. It wasn’t just the atmosphere; it was like the earth itself tilted beneath me. A force, raw and gut-wrenching, dug into my chest. It settled deep in my bones, an ache I couldn’t shake. And my heart?Gone.Ripped. Shattered. Scattered into a million pieces, each one cutting deeper than the last.I didn’t even realize my hands had curled into fists until I felt the sharp sting. My claws had broken through my skin. Blood pooled in my palms, warm and sticky. The pain barely registered—lost in the storm of rage swirling inside me.I turned around. Walked. No. Stormed away from the gala.Quinn’s voice called after me, a soft echo of concern and confusion. I didn’t stop. I coul

(Quinn’s perspective)I’ve been through hell and I’ve felt pain so deep it hollowed me out from the inside. But this…this was different. It wasn’t pain. It was rage. And it burned hotter than anything I’ve ever felt.Luca’s father just stood there, cool and composed, like he hadn’t just dropped the most soul-crushing, world-shattering proposal in the history of terrible proposals.Casey. Fucking Casey.I stared at the woman who stood beside Cale, her head high, sharp eyes flicking between Luca and me, like she already won.I don’t cry and I don’t break. Not anymore but right now? I was dangerously close. What’s worse was that Luca was watching me. His eyes locked onto mine, searching. For what? A sign? A reaction? He wouldn’t get one. Not from me.But my eyes—they betrayed me, and I could feel it. The sting. The way they glistened. I blinked. No tears. Not here, but shit, of course Casey noticed. Her lips curved into a smile, slow and deliberate, like she could taste my discomfort. Sh

(Luca’s Perspective)I wasn’t supposed to be here. Not lurking behind doors, not eavesdropping on conversations that had my blood boiling. But here I was. Watching. Waiting.Quinn’s voice trembled as she faced him—the man, the wolf, whatever the hell he was—threatening her. My Quinn. No, his Quinn now.I’d heard enough.I stepped into the room, slow and deliberate, every movement calculated to keep the anger simmering just below the surface.“Who the hell do you think you are, threatening my mate?” I growled, my voice low but loud enough to make heads turn. The man didn’t flinch. No, he smirked—a cold, arrogant curve of his lips that sent a chill down my spine. Something about that smile…And then it hit me.Recognition slammed into me like a freight train. The Echo.He wasn’t some misty, shapeless presence anymore. No dark whispers from shadows or fleeting glimpses in nightmares. He was here. In the flesh.“Impossible,” I whispered, my eyes narrowing. “How... How are you—?”“Fully fo
