Chapter 8 – Facing Luca

I froze. My eyes flicked from Luca to Ethan, who looked outright flabbergasted at Luca’s outright rudeness.

“What?” Ethan asked with gritted teeth, anger now shining through his normally kind features.

“I said…what.the.fuck.is.she.doing.here?” Luca responded, sounding every word precisely. Ethan was stunned like he had never seen his brother behave this way. I haven't met him before, so I would know how he normally acts, but if this is it, he can go straight to hell for all I care. It’s a pity how he is still melting my insides standing so close to him, and my soul is crying to be nearer to him, which I don’t understand at all. He infuriates me already, so why would I want to be near him? It’s like half my body wants to kick him in the face, and the other wants to kiss it…whoa what do they put in the water here?

I realized I zoned out for a moment but snapped to reality when I heard a faint snarl deep in the woods, making me look towards the darkness of the forest. I tried to squint and see if there was any movement from where the snarl came from. I couldn’t see anything, so my attention turned back to Luca, who surprisingly was also looking in the same direction as me with his eyebrows furrowed. ‘Did he really hear what I just heard? I wonder.’

Luca then slowly turned his face back to me and almost grimaced when he saw I was watching him, but then he started reprimanding me.

“Would you like to take a photo? It lasts longer, dweeb!” Luca sneered at me. “What are you staring at? I said go home where you belong!”

“Luca! "What the fuck, man?” Ethan snapped.

I looked at him, tilting my head slightly, wondering what I did to deserve this treatment by this stranger. And even though I tried to put on a brave face, my emotions were slipping through, and I was pretty sure he was aware he was striking my heart where it hurt. Just then he stood up, and yup, he was super tall all right. He was maybe a few inches taller than Ethan, and I had to look up at him when he took a step closer.

Then finally, the next thing he said to me made my head spin and not in a good way. “Fuck off,” he said slowly and deliberately before walking around me and storming off. When he said this, something triggered deep inside me. Not a longing or the attraction I felt earlier, but searing rage.

Unfortunately this little spat was noticed by the rest of the group, and they remained dead silent except for nick who watched him walk away and rushed at me.

“I am sorry, I must have misheard…did he just tell you to fuck off?” Nick asked, but his friendly energy had dissipated with the wind, and in place of it was a cold, dark expression. I couldn’t answer because my blood was boiling from anger, as if I were about to explode.

“Yeah, yeah, he did,” Ethan snapped, still looking at his brother walking off. Nick clenched his jaw and took a step towards him, but without even realizing it, I put my hand in front of Nick to stop him.

“I got this,” I said, narrowing my eyes at Luca. ‘Wait, what have you got? What are you doing Quinn?’ I thought, but it was like my body had a mind of its own. What was happening? I couldn’t control it. My body was stomping at a quick pace towards Luca, and I wasn’t in control at all. Something was controlling me, but what?

Luca, hearing the stomping steps following him, turned around slowly and looked at me mockingly, shoving his hands in his hoodie pockets.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“You seem like someone who is a sucker for punishment,” he mocked, stepping closer with a sneer. “For the last time, bitch… fuck off!”

Bitch? Who does this animal think he is?! Before I knew it, my arm moved of its own accord, swinging hard and fast, my fist smashing into his jaw with a force I didn’t realize I possessed. His head snapped to the side, and he staggered back, dazed.

“Oh shit!” Nick and Ethan shouted in unison, rushing toward me. Their hands clamped onto my shoulders, spinning me away from Luca. “Uh, we gotta go,” Ethan stammered, urgency dripping from his voice.

“Why?” I asked, blinking at them in confusion. It felt like I’d just woken up from a dream, my hand still tingling from the punch. I stared down at it, then up at Luca, my heart pounding.

But something wasn’t right. Luca wasn’t just shaken—his entire body seemed to be trembling, vibrating with tension. His breath came in short, jagged bursts, each inhale sounding more labored than the last as if he were struggling with something deep inside him. His muscles strained under his skin, which glistened with sweat as though he were burning up from the inside.

He didn’t look at me, and when he did, it was only for a fraction of a second—just long enough for me to catch a flicker of something terrifying. His eyes. One of them had darkened, a subtle red creeping into the iris that made my stomach churn. It was a flash, barely there, but enough to send my nerves sparking with fear.

“Go,” Luca rasped, his voice low and deep, almost like it hurt to speak. His body was hunched forward now, his fists clenched so tightly that the veins in his arms were bulging, as if he were desperately holding something back.

“Luca, calm down, she didn’t know—” Ethan started, his voice panicked.

“GO!” Luca roared, but the sound that came from him wasn’t human. It was raw, beast-like, vibrating with a dangerous, primal energy. He bent over further, his entire frame shaking violently, as if every breath were a battle against whatever was trying to tear free.

Nick and Ethan grabbed each of my arms and ran me to the car as fast as possible. Nick ensured I got in the passenger seat quickly, and Ethan literally hopped over the hood like a gymnast and got into the driver's seat before I could even blink. Once Nick made sure I was secure in my seat with the seatbelt, he stopped and looked at me.

“Sorry about this. Don’t worry, we all think what you did was super awesome, so we are definitely going to invite you to the next one. I might even pop by and see you sooner than that." Later, feisty Quinny,” Nick said as he smiled and ran back in Luca’s direction.

(Luca’s perspective)I’ve faced a lot of crap in my life. Fought battles I wasn’t ready for, took hits that should’ve left me dead, and carried burdens no one else even saw. But this? This was something else entirely.Quinn.Mated. To Cale. The moment he hinted at it—casually, like it was nothing—I felt the air shift. It wasn’t just the atmosphere; it was like the earth itself tilted beneath me. A force, raw and gut-wrenching, dug into my chest. It settled deep in my bones, an ache I couldn’t shake. And my heart?Gone.Ripped. Shattered. Scattered into a million pieces, each one cutting deeper than the last.I didn’t even realize my hands had curled into fists until I felt the sharp sting. My claws had broken through my skin. Blood pooled in my palms, warm and sticky. The pain barely registered—lost in the storm of rage swirling inside me.I turned around. Walked. No. Stormed away from the gala.Quinn’s voice called after me, a soft echo of concern and confusion. I didn’t stop. I coul

(Quinn’s perspective)I’ve been through hell and I’ve felt pain so deep it hollowed me out from the inside. But this…this was different. It wasn’t pain. It was rage. And it burned hotter than anything I’ve ever felt.Luca’s father just stood there, cool and composed, like he hadn’t just dropped the most soul-crushing, world-shattering proposal in the history of terrible proposals.Casey. Fucking Casey.I stared at the woman who stood beside Cale, her head high, sharp eyes flicking between Luca and me, like she already won.I don’t cry and I don’t break. Not anymore but right now? I was dangerously close. What’s worse was that Luca was watching me. His eyes locked onto mine, searching. For what? A sign? A reaction? He wouldn’t get one. Not from me.But my eyes—they betrayed me, and I could feel it. The sting. The way they glistened. I blinked. No tears. Not here, but shit, of course Casey noticed. Her lips curved into a smile, slow and deliberate, like she could taste my discomfort. Sh

(Luca’s Perspective)I wasn’t supposed to be here. Not lurking behind doors, not eavesdropping on conversations that had my blood boiling. But here I was. Watching. Waiting.Quinn’s voice trembled as she faced him—the man, the wolf, whatever the hell he was—threatening her. My Quinn. No, his Quinn now.I’d heard enough.I stepped into the room, slow and deliberate, every movement calculated to keep the anger simmering just below the surface.“Who the hell do you think you are, threatening my mate?” I growled, my voice low but loud enough to make heads turn. The man didn’t flinch. No, he smirked—a cold, arrogant curve of his lips that sent a chill down my spine. Something about that smile…And then it hit me.Recognition slammed into me like a freight train. The Echo.He wasn’t some misty, shapeless presence anymore. No dark whispers from shadows or fleeting glimpses in nightmares. He was here. In the flesh.“Impossible,” I whispered, my eyes narrowing. “How... How are you—?”“Fully fo

(Luca’s Perspective)She was here. The moment Quinn walked into the gala, everything in me froze. It was like time screeched to a halt, and the air thinned until I couldn’t breathe. The sight of her—her scent—hit me like a punch to the gut. That familiar sweetness, laced with something darker now, something sharp. It was her. It was Quinn. But not the Quinn I remembered.Ethan must’ve felt it too because his head snapped toward her as fast as mine did. His golden eyes flashed for half a second, and then he turned to me, his face pale. “No way,” he muttered under his breath.I didn’t respond. Couldn’t. My heart was pounding so loud it drowned out the chatter and the soft music playing in the hall. She was walking beside a man I didn’t recognize—a tall, arrogant bastard with an air of possession. He had his arm looped through hers like she was a trophy. Her chin was held high, her movements slow and deliberate, but I knew her well enough to see the tension in her shoulders. She didn’t w

  • Unwritten Mates    Chapter 57 – The Perfect Luna

The week leading up to the gala was a blur of hell disguised as preparation. Cale was on a power trip, pacing and plotting, going on about alliances and territories like he was a war general. Apparently, the gala was his grand re-entrance into the world of packs. He was at full strength now, his army of twenty wolves polished and lethal, and I—his broken, hollow Luna—was supposed to be the cherry on top.“You’ll act like the Luna I chose,” he said one night, his tone sharp enough to cut. “Behave. Look the part. Be perfect.”Perfect. Right. That’s where Casey came in.Casey, Cale’s Beta. The woman I hated more than I hated him—if that was even possible. She’d been my “trainer” for years, which was just a polite way of saying “torturer.” Casey didn’t hold back. Not with the physical drills. Not with the verbal abuse. And definitely not with the humiliation. She had full reins to mold me into Cale’s version of a perfect Luna, and she relished every second of it.“Shoulders back. Chin up.

  • Unwritten Mates    Chapter 56 – No Longer Human

I didn’t even flinch when Cale told me it had been five years.Five years.Five years of living in that over-guarded house—a prison dressed up as a mansion. Five years of being stripped down, layer by layer, until there was nothing left of the girl I used to be. I didn’t react when he said it. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. Instead, I turned and walked outside, desperate for air that didn’t taste like him.The sky stretched above me, vast and indifferent. Remembering the night that I stopped being human, I wanted to scream at it and demand answers. Why? Why me? But I knew better. The sky doesn’t answer.Cale had taken everything. My family, my friends, my dignity. My power. Even Luca—the one thing I’d clung to in the beginning—faded with time. The hope that he’d find me, save me? Gone. Love itself had become a distant memory, something that belonged to a different person.I was Quinn. Or at least, I thought I was. But even that felt like a lie now.And then there was Cale.He d
