The heavy iron gate of the underground garage rattled down behind us, sealing out the Chicago downpour with a resounding, metallic clang.

Julian didn't release his grip on my neck until the SUV came to a complete halt in the private subterranean bay. The silence inside the vehicle hung thick and suffocating, still charged with the residue of our brutal collision back at the club and the terrifying weight of the Zurich files resting on the armrest between us.

He slid out first, unfolding his massive six-foot-three frame into the dim, clinical fluorescent light of the garage. Before I could move to open my own door, his hand was already pulling it wide. He reached in, wrapping his fingers around my elbow, pulling me out into the cool, concrete-scented air.

"My estate," Julian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp near my ear as he guided me toward the private, biometric elevator at the end of the bay. "The penthouse occupies the top three floors. State-of-the-art surveillance, bulletproof glass, zero unmonitored exits."

"A gilded cage," I said, keeping my stride even with his despite the bone-deep exhaustion pulling at my limbs and the painful throb of my swollen lips.

"A secure one," he countered, pressing his palm against the glass scanner. The elevator doors hissed open, revealing a private, wood-paneled cab. "You brought a war to my doorstep tonight, Evelyn. I don't intend to let your father's cleanup crews handle my security."

As the high-speed lift shot upward, the silence between us stretched tight, thick with unspoken friction. I stared at our reflection in the mirrored walls Julian, dark, towering, and immaculate despite the dried blood near his brow; and me, my white silk blouse ruined, my hair damp, standing beside the man who controlled my fate.

The doors parted silently directly into the sprawling, dimly lit master suite. High ceilings, dark hardwood floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the fog-drenched Chicago skyline. The space was pristine, masculine, and dominated by a massive, platform bed dressed in slate-gray linens.

One bed. No locked doors.

The reality of his condition settled heavily in my stomach, but I refused to let my eyes linger on the bed.

Julian stepped past me, unbuttoning his cuff links and tossing them onto a black marble dresser. He turned, his silver-gray eyes tracking my every movement as I stood near the center of the room.

"You have one last loose end to tie," Julian said, his tone shifting into something cold, clinical, and calculated. He reached into his pocket, pulled out an encrypted burner phone, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table between us.

I looked down at the sleek black device. "My father."

"He's currently assembling his board, trying to figure out how his Zurich clearing codes vanished from under his nose while his daughter's body was still warm," Julian said, leaning back against the marble dresser, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "He thinks you're dead, or hiding. Correct the narrative, Evelyn. Cut the final anchor."

My chest tightened, a cold, hard knot forming behind my ribs. I didn't hesitate. I walked over to the table, picked up the phone, and dialed the private, unlisted line I had memorized when I was twelve years old.

I hit the speakerphone and set the device flat on the glass.

It rang once. Twice. On the third ring, a sharp, gravelly voice answered, heavy with booze and restrained rage.

"Speak," Richard Mercer barked.

"Hello, Father," I said, my voice dropping into a smooth, icy register that betrayed none of the chaotic adrenaline humming through my veins.

A sharp intake of breath hissed over the speaker. "Evelyn? Where the hell are you? The club was hit. Vance’s men are everywhere, and the Zurich server flagged an unauthorized clearance ten minutes ago. Tell me you have the backup drives."

"I have the drives, Father," I replied softly, casting a brief glance at Julian. He hadn't moved an inch, watching me from the shadows like an icy judge evaluating my resolve. "But they aren't coming back to the estate."

A long, suffocating beat of silence stretched over the line.

"What are you talking about?" Richard’s voice hardened, the slurry edge disappearing instantly. "Bring them home. Now. Your sister is gone, Evelyn. The family firm is under siege. I need those keys to liquidate the offshore accounts before the feds freeze everything."

"Clara is gone because you sold her out to protect your board members," I said, my hands resting flat on the cold glass table, anchoring myself. "And I am not bringing anything home. I am using the Zurich ledgers as my dowry."

"Your... what?"

"I’m getting married, Father," I announced, the words falling like sharp iron blades into the quiet room. "To Julian Vane."

A harsh, disbelieving laugh echoed from the speaker, followed by the heavy thud of a glass slamming onto a desk miles away. "Julian Vane? The bastard who ordered the hit on Clara’s transport? Are you out of your mind? He’s a syndicate parasite!"

"He is the man who now owns your clean infrastructure," I countered, keeping my tone razor-thin, completely unyielding. "By morning, the press will announce our union. By noon, Vane Enterprises will absorb your remaining municipal holdings. You have nothing left to liquidate."

"You ungrateful, treacherous little bitch!" Richard roared, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated venom. "I raised you! I put you through school, I gave you a seat at my table, and you crawl into bed with the man who murdered your sister?"

"You buried Clara to save your own skin," I whispered, the cold anger burning steady and bright in my chest. "I am marrying Julian to tear down yours."

"Listen to me very carefully, Evelyn," Richard spat, his breathing ragged over the line. "If you stay in that room, if you sign a single document with that man, you are dead to me. You no longer bear the Mercer name. You have no family, no trust, and no protection. I will disown you, and I will hunt you down myself."

I looked up, meeting Julian’s intense, unblinking silver gaze across the room. A slow, dark promise hung between us in the quiet air.

"Good luck, Father," I said softly.

Before he could scream another threat, I reached down and tapped the screen, severing the call.

The silence that followed was absolute.

I stood above the dark phone screen, my hands steady, my chest rising and falling in slow, controlled breaths. No tears came. No regret softened the edges of my mind. The bridge wasn't just burned; it was reduced to ash, scattered over the dark waters of the Chicago river.

Julian slowly pushed himself off the marble dresser, his heavy boots sounding a slow rhythm against the hardwood as he crossed the room toward me. He stopped right beside the table, towering over me, his shadow wrapping around my small frame.

He reached down, his long fingers picking up the burner phone, turning it over in his hand before crushing the casing with an effortless, brutal flex of his grip and dropping the ruined pieces onto the table.

"No turning back, little bride," Julian murmured, his voice a low purr that resonated deep within the quiet room.

"I burned my ship before I even stepped onto your dock, Julian," I said, turning my face to meet his dark, possessive gaze. "Now make good on your end of the deal.”

The swollen, feverish heat from the study didn't dissipate when the door swung open; it clung to my skin like a second layer of silk. My lips still throbbed, raw and hypersensitive from the violent press of Julian’s mouth, tasting faintly of iron and the dark, intoxicating peat of his scotch.Every breath I drew tasted of him. Every frantic beat of my heart was a betraying reminder of how easily he had shattered my icy detachment on the edge of that mahogany desk. The transition from the study to the street was swift, silent, and suffocating.Julian’s broad palm remained planted firmly at the small of my back a heavy, possessive anchor pressing through the ruined, blood-stained silk of my shirt as he steered me down a dimly lit, concrete stairwell. The heavy oak door of the study didn't fully seal out the sound of the aftermath. Outside, the dull thud of heavy plastic bags, the dragging of dead weight, and the sharp, chemical reek of industrial bleach bled through the seams Julian’s cleanup crew moving with silent, terrifying speed. It was 2:00 AM.I stood near the edge of the mahogany desk, my hands still stinging from the violent recoil of the gun. The pristine collar of my white silk shirt was ruined, stiffening into a dark, rusty crimson where Julian’s blood had dripped onto my skin.Julian didn't sit down. He stood by the small brass sink in the corner of the dim office, peeling off his ruined charcoal jacket and tossing it callously over a leather armchair. His dark shoulder holster sat heavy and menacing against his white dress shirt, the leather worn soft from years of use, framing the massive breadth of his back. Without a word, he turned on the faucet and shoved his broad hands under the icy stream, washing away the gr

My fingers recoiled from the blistering hot metal of the sidearm, the heat of the spent barrel stinging my skin, but Julian’s hand clamped over mine like a steel vise, locking my grip around the heavy frame of the pistol."Not yet, little bride," he breathed against my ear, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured surges against my back. "The show's over."Thick, grey smoke rolled through the ruined VIP lounge, smelling of sulfur, scorched velvet, melted plastic, and hot brass. Down below in the main casino floor, the frantic burst of automatic gunfire died into echoing shouting, punctuated by the sharp, authoritative bark of Julian’s enforcers taking back the territory with ruthless, efficient precision."Clear the room," Julian commanded, his gravelly baritone cutting through the high-pitched ringing in my ears.Footsteps retreated instantly. His remaining guards moved like specters through the haze, hauling the dead gunman by his tactical vest out into the hallway, slamming t

The bass didn't just play in The Vault; it rattled the ice in the crystal lowballs and vibrated through the velvet-lined walls thirty feet beneath the Chicago pavement. The heavy thrum echoed in my teeth, a rhythmic, suffocating heartbeat that matched the frantic, betraying pulse jumping in my throat.I adjusted the edge of my silk lapel, forcing my breath to steady, forcing my posture into an unyielding line as I stepped past the velvet rope into the VIP lounge. Beneath my left arm, the leather folder felt heavier than lead. Inside lay two years of stolen cartel ledgers, four forged offshore routing numbers, and the single document that would either buy my freedom or sign my death warrant.Three hours. It had been exactly three hours since they lowered Clara’s polished mahogany casket into the freezing mud of the family plot. Three hours since my father clinked whiskey glasses with the very men who paved her way into the ground, hiding his complicity behind tailored suits and false,
