The swollen, feverish heat from the study didn't dissipate when the door swung open; it clung to my skin like a second layer of silk. My lips still throbbed, raw and hypersensitive from the violent press of Julian’s mouth, tasting faintly of iron and the dark, intoxicating peat of his scotch.

Every breath I drew tasted of him. Every frantic beat of my heart was a betraying reminder of how easily he had shattered my icy detachment on the edge of that mahogany desk.

The transition from the study to the street was swift, silent, and suffocating.

Julian’s broad palm remained planted firmly at the small of my back a heavy, possessive anchor pressing through the ruined, blood-stained silk of my shirt as he steered me down a dimly lit, concrete stairwell. Four heavily armed enforcers moved in a tight tactical formation around us, their eyes darting across the shadows of the hidden service exit.

Outside, rain lashed down in relentless, icy sheets, stinging my face and soaking straight through my clothes in seconds. At the curb, a blacked-out, heavily armored SUV sat idling with a low, guttural thrum that vibrated through the wet pavement.

Julian opened the rear door and shoved me gently into the dark leather interior before sliding in right beside me. The reinforced door slammed shut with a heavy, air-tight thud, instantly cutting off the sound of the downpour, the distant wail of Chicago police sirens, and the muffled chaos of The Vault.

The vehicle lurched forward into the dark, fog-slicked night.

Inside the cabin, low amber accent lighting cast long, razor-sharp shadows across Julian’s carved profile. The physical proximity was overwhelming. The air between us was thick, heavy with the reek of ozone, leather, and the unexploded sexual tension leftover from our collision in the office. My knees practically brushed his muscular thigh with every sway of the chassis. I kept my hands folded tightly in my lap, squeezing my wrists until my knuckles turned white to hide the lingering tremor in my fingers.

I let him touch me. I let him—

I cut the thought off before it could finish, burying the terrifying spark of desire beneath a wall of cold, analytical logic. It was survival. It had to be. If he saw even a micro-fracture in my armor, he would use it to pry me apart until there was nothing left of Evelyn Mercer.

Beside me, Julian didn't say a word. He reached across the leather armrest, picked up the heavy binder I had brought him, and flipped it open with a slow, deliberate movement of his calloused wrist.

I leaned my head back against the headrest, crossing my arms defensively over my chest, watching him through the gloom.

At first, his expression was an unreadable mask the cold, unbothered posture of a syndicate kingpin skimming routine financial reports. But as his long fingers turned the pages, the rhythmic click of paper slowed. His silver-gray eyes narrowed, scanning line by line, column by column. The muscles along his jaw flexed, tight and rigid.

The silence inside the SUV stretched, heavy, suffocating, and charged with an impending strike.

Julian stopped on a page stamped with a red watermarked seal. His thick index finger traced the top margin, halting directly over a complex, thirty-two-character hexadecimal clearance code.

"These aren't local ledgers," Julian said quietly. His voice was lower than before, stripped of all theatricality, dropping into a register that made the hair on my arms stand up. "These are the cold-storage routing files for the Mercer Vault in Zurich."

"I told you I brought you a dowry," I replied, forcing my voice into a flat, steady line despite the violent flutter in my ribs.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at me. The silver in his eyes caught the dim cabin light, sharp, predatory, and razor-focused.

"The Zurich Vault isn't a server you hack from a bedroom with a laptop, Evelyn," he said, leaning sideways over the center console, invading my space with terrifying, unhurried deliberation. The dark, woodsmoke scent of him washed over me again, instantly reviving the electric static on my skin. "It’s air-gapped. It requires a physical hardware token stored in your father’s primary safe, along with an encrypted biometric key that updates every sixty seconds."

He closed the binder with a sharp, heavy snap that echoed like a gunshot in the enclosed space.

"Your father was at The Vault tonight," Julian whispered, his broad shoulder pressing close enough that I could feel the intense heat radiating through his suit jacket. "He was drinking scotch in the main lounge while your sister’s body was still cold. Which means you didn't just copy these files."

He reached out, his long, heavy fingers wrapping around the back of my neck, his thumb resting heavily against the pulse point under my jawline. The touch was scorching, possessive, and entirely unyielding, locking me in place.

"You bypassed multi-tier military encryption," he continued, his thumb pressing just hard enough to feel the frantic, betraying leap of my blood against his skin. "You cracked your father's personal vault while he was fifty feet away, and walked out with his entire empire sitting in a leather bag."

I held his gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to let him see the sheer exhaustion dragging at my mind. "I told you. I’m a forensic accountant."

"No," Julian corrected softly, his voice dropping into a dark purr. He pulled me half an inch closer, his dark gaze dropping to my swollen lower lip before rising back to lock onto my eyes. "A forensic accountant reads the financial damage after the house burns to the ground. You're the one who poured the gasoline and set the fire."

My breath hitched in my throat. The memory of his lips on mine flared hot in my mind, making my skin flush beneath his hand. "Does that frighten you, Julian?"

A slow, dangerous smile curved the corner of his jaw an expression of pure, dark appreciation.

"Frighten me?" he whispered against my jawline, his warm breath sending a violent shiver cascading straight down my spine. "Sweetheart, it makes me wonder what you'll do to my house when you decide you don't like the color of the walls."

"Then you'd better keep your promises," I breathed back, forcing my chin up against the pressure of his thumb. "Because if you cross me, I won't just steal your routing codes. I'll erase you."

For a long, heart-stopping second, Julian just stared at me. The dark, volatile hunger from the study flickered behind his eyes, mixed with a cold, calculating respect. He didn't pull his hand away. His thumb dragged slowly across my jawline, tracing the line of my throat until it rested over the hollow of my collarbone.

"You're a lethal asset, little bride," he murmured, his voice laced with a lethal, possessive promise. "And a deeply dangerous threat."

"Are you backing out?" I asked softly, forcing a dangerous, faint curve to my swollen lips.

Julian’s fingers tightened on my collarbone just enough to send a jolt of electricity straight to my core.

"Backing out?" he whispered against my skin, his chest pressing firm against my side as the SUV turned smoothly onto the private drive leading to his penthouse tower. "Sweetheart, I'm keeping you in my bed so I don't have to hire an army to hunt you down."

I opened my mouth to shoot back a venomous reply, but the words died in my throat as the SUV slid silently into the underground, private garage beneath his residence. The heavy iron security gate rattled down behind us, sealing us away from the city, away from the rain,

and locking me inside his world.

The silence inside the vehicle hung thick and suffocating, still charged with the residue of our brutal collision back at the club and the terrifying weight of the Zurich files resting on the armrest between us.He slid out first, unfolding his massive six-foot-three frame into the dim, clinical fluorescent light of the garage. Before I could move to open my own door, his hand was already pulling it wide. He reached in, wrapping his fingers around my elbow, pulling me out into the cool, concrete-scented air."My estate," Julian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp near my ear as he guided me toward the private, biometric elevator at the end of the bay. "The penthouse occupies the top three floors. State-of-the-art surveillance, bullet

The heavy oak door of the study didn't fully seal out the sound of the aftermath. Outside, the dull thud of heavy plastic bags, the dragging of dead weight, and the sharp, chemical reek of industrial bleach bled through the seams Julian’s cleanup crew moving with silent, terrifying speed. It was 2:00 AM.I stood near the edge of the mahogany desk, my hands still stinging from the violent recoil of the gun. The pristine collar of my white silk shirt was ruined, stiffening into a dark, rusty crimson where Julian’s blood had dripped onto my skin.Julian didn't sit down. He stood by the small brass sink in the corner of the dim office, peeling off his ruined charcoal jacket and tossing it callously over a leather armchair. His dark shoulder holster sat heavy and menacing against his white dress shirt, the leather worn soft from years of use, framing the massive breadth of his back. Without a word, he turned on the faucet and shoved his broad hands under the icy stream, washing away the gr

My fingers recoiled from the blistering hot metal of the sidearm, the heat of the spent barrel stinging my skin, but Julian’s hand clamped over mine like a steel vise, locking my grip around the heavy frame of the pistol."Not yet, little bride," he breathed against my ear, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured surges against my back. "The show's over."Thick, grey smoke rolled through the ruined VIP lounge, smelling of sulfur, scorched velvet, melted plastic, and hot brass. Down below in the main casino floor, the frantic burst of automatic gunfire died into echoing shouting, punctuated by the sharp, authoritative bark of Julian’s enforcers taking back the territory with ruthless, efficient precision."Clear the room," Julian commanded, his gravelly baritone cutting through the high-pitched ringing in my ears.Footsteps retreated instantly. His remaining guards moved like specters through the haze, hauling the dead gunman by his tactical vest out into the hallway, slamming t

The bass didn't just play in The Vault; it rattled the ice in the crystal lowballs and vibrated through the velvet-lined walls thirty feet beneath the Chicago pavement. The heavy thrum echoed in my teeth, a rhythmic, suffocating heartbeat that matched the frantic, betraying pulse jumping in my throat.I adjusted the edge of my silk lapel, forcing my breath to steady, forcing my posture into an unyielding line as I stepped past the velvet rope into the VIP lounge. Beneath my left arm, the leather folder felt heavier than lead. It had been exactly three hours since they lowered Clara’s polished mahogany casket into the freezing mud of the family plot. Three hours since my father clinked whiskey glasses with the very men who paved her way into the ground, hiding his complicity behind tailored suits and false,
