My lungs burned with every breath of freezing mountain air as my boots slipped and slid across the slick mud of the old logging trail.

"We are not going to make it," I yelled over my shoulder, and I stumbled on a loose tree root hidden beneath the wet leaves.

"Don't you dare stop moving," Darian shouted back, and he hauled me upright by the back of my jacket before I could fall face-first into the dirt.

The rain soaked through my clothes and chilled my skin, but the fear of missing the deadline kept my legs moving when I just wanted to collapse.

We crested the top of the ridge, and the massive titanium gates of Viremont Academy loomed out of the dark storm ahead of us.

The heavy metal doors were already humming with a loud vibration, and they were slowly sliding toward each other to seal the campus for the rest of the year.

"Push!" Darian roared, and he shoved his shoulder against my back to propel me forward as fast as my tired legs could move.

We threw ourselves into the narrow gap between the closing doors just as the titanium slammed shut behind us with a deafening boom.

I tripped over my own boots and tumbled onto the smooth stone pavement while gasping desperately for air.

Darian dropped onto his knees next to me, and he braced his hands on the ground while he let out a harsh string of curses.

"Did we… are we locked out?" I panted out between ragged breaths, and I wiped a mix of rainwater and rogue blood from my stinging eyes.

"Look around you," Darian muttered between heavy breaths.

I pushed myself up onto my elbows, and I blinked at the blinding overhead lights illuminating the massive academy courtyard.

The storm did not seem to exist inside the campus walls, and the air was dry and comfortably warm on my freezing skin.

Hundreds of students milled around the pristine courtyard in small groups, and they tapped away on sleek holographic tablets that projected glowing blue schedules into the air.

Everyone wore immaculate designer uniforms in pristine whites and deep blacks, and they looked like royalty waiting for a grand ball to begin.

I looked down at my own cargo pants, and I cringed when I saw the thick layer of dark mud and sticky rogue blood coating my clothes.

My hands were scraped raw from the fight, and a nasty cut on my forearm was still slowly dripping crimson onto the polished white stones beneath me.

"Are we the only ones who walked through a damn forest to get here?" I asked, and I stared at a boy wearing a spotless white suit and shiny dress shoes.

"The elite families take private magical transports directly onto the campus grounds, so they don't have to deal with the weather," Darian explained, and he brushed a clump of mud off his torn shirt.

"Must be nice to have Daddy buy your way past the mud," I grumbled, and I wiped a smear of dirt off my cheek with the back of my hand.

A group of girls standing near a glowing archway stopped their conversation, and they turned their heads to stare at us with wide, horrified eyes.

One of the girls wrinkled her nose in disgust, and she leaned over to whisper something behind her hand to her friend while pointing directly at my ruined boots.

I felt the sudden urge to shrink into the floor, but I forced my fingers to wrap tightly around the handle of my silver wrench to ground my racing heart.

Darian noticed the stares and pushed himself upright, and he rolled his shoulders before offering me his hand to help me up.

"Don't look at them," he warned me in a low voice, and his jaw tightened as he glared at the whispering girls until they looked away.

"It is kind of hard to ignore them when they look at me like I just crawled out of a sewer," I mumbled, and I took his hand so he could pull me onto my feet.

"You survived a rogue attack, and they would have pissed themselves and died in the same situation," he stated flatly.

"Well, try telling that to the welcoming committee heading our way," I whispered, and I nodded toward a tall girl marching across the courtyard.

The girl approaching us wore a tailored white blazer that probably cost more than my entire life, and her sharp cheekbones made her look impossibly arrogant.

She carried a glowing tablet tucked under her arm, and her dark eyes swept over my muddy clothes with pure, unadulterated contempt.

"I heard the Varric pack was bringing their stray to school this year, but I didn't realize they literally dragged you out of a dumpster," the girl sneered, and she stopped a few feet away so my mud wouldn't splash her expensive shoes.

"And I didn't realize Viremont handed out custom blazers to stuck-up bitches, but here we are," I shot back, and I ignored the painful throbbing in my ribs so I could stand up straight.

Phaedra scoffed at my retort, and she tapped her perfectly manicured nails against the edge of her glowing holographic tablet.

"Did you really think a silver wrench would earn you respect in a place built for real power?" she asked, and she pointed her tablet at the heavy tool still gripped in my hand.

"It earns me enough space to keep your fake face away from me," I answered, and I stepped forward even though my muscles screamed in protest.

"You are going to regret opening your mouth to me, human," Phaedra warned, and the air around her chilled as her innate magic flared.

"Back the fuck off, Phaedra," Darian growled, and he stepped directly in front of me so his broad chest blocked her from getting any closer.

I blinked against the harsh white light shining in my face.My knees ached against the hard floor, and my hands were slick with Zayden's blood.Lucius just sat there in his pristine academy uniform, looking completely bored. He spun the rolling desk chair around and lowered the flashlight so the beam pointed at my boots."Are you kidding me?" I breathed out, my heart still hammering a frantic rhythm. "How the hell did you get down here?""I walked," Lucius answered simply. He stood up from the ancient computer terminal and brushed a thin layer of dust off his dark slacks."The faculty was too busy watching the elite packs tear each other apart in the woods. They left the administrative wards wide open.""We just got dropped down a chute," I told him, pressing the torn cloth harder against Zayden's bleeding side. "There was a gargoyle."Lucius stepped over a thick bundle of cables and walked toward us."I bypassed the maze," he said, his boots crunching softly on the loose dirt. "I've

The loud, pounding chaos of the festival and the terrifying roar of the stone monster were gone. The only sound in the massive, forgotten library was the harsh rhythm of our breathing.Blood soaked quickly through the first few layers of the cloth, making my fingers slick and warm, but I refused to ease up.I pushed my palms down harder, leaning my shoulder into his chest for better leverage."You can let go of my arm now," I told him softly. His grip slowly loosened as the initial shock of the pain finally passed. He didn't drop his hand back to the floor, though. He let his hand slide down to my waist, resting his palm flat against my back just above where I ripped my shirt. His touch sent a sudden jolt of electricity racing straight up my spine, and my breath caught in my throat. He wasn't trying to push me away anymore. He was just holding on to me like I was the only thing keeping him tethered to the ground.I looked down at his face, really looking at him for the first time sinc

My stomach leaped into my throat as gravity pulled us down into the dark.Zayden held me flush against his chest, keeping his arms locked tight around my waist. We hit a steep curve, and my boots scraped against the smooth stone sides of the chute.I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for a crash that felt like it was taking forever to happen. He twisted his body at the last second, putting his own back toward the floor as we shot out of the tunnel. We crashed hard onto solid rock. The brutal impact knocked the breath right out of my lungs. We rolled across the uneven ground together until Zayden slammed into something heavy with a loud thud.A harsh groan tore from his throat, and his arms finally let go of me.Thick dust kicked up into the air, choking me as I pushed myself off his chest and scrambled backward. My ribs flared with sharp pain, but the rigid medical tape Saskia put on held firm against my skin.I coughed loudly, waving my hands to clear the thick gray cloud settling aroun

I turned and grabbed Liora hard around the waist.I threw us both backward into the dirt just as the red rune ignited. The blast was deafening.A massive boom shook the narrow tunnel, vibrating right through my teeth.Chunks of hot rock and thick dust exploded outward in a violent wave. The monster blew apart in a shower of bright sparks and broken gears. The shockwave hit us like a speeding train. It picked us up and threw us backward across the loose gravel.I wrapped my arms around Liora's head, tucking her face into my chest to protect her from the flying shrapnel.Heavy pieces of stone rained down on my back.Sharp pieces of metal pinged against the walls around us.The heat from the explosion washed over my neck, singeing the collar of my jacket. Then, the noise stopped. The loud grinding sound of the monster was gone. The only sound left was the steady, heavy falling of dirt hitting the floor.I kept my arms around her for a long time.I didn't want to move. The adrenaline cras

"Touch him again, and I will melt you into slag."Her voice echoed off the damp stone walls, fierce and steady.I laid in the dirt, my side burning like someone had shoved a hot iron spike right between my ribs.Blood poured from the jagged tear in my uniform. The hot liquid soaked through my shirt and pooled in the dark mud under my back.Every single breath I took sent a fresh, blinding wave of agony straight through my chest.I blinked through the haze of pain and tried to focus my eyes.Liora stood directly between me and the massive stone monster. She wasn't holding her silver wrench anymore. She wasn't trying to hide behind a rock or run for cover.A blinding, pale light poured from her bare hands, lighting up the dark tunnel. The glow washed over the rough walls and cast deep, dancing shadows across her face.My inner dragon did not roar.It did not push me to rise up and fight for dominance like it always did when challenged. The ancient beast inside my soul went dead silent.

The gargoyle was massive, taking up almost the entire width of the tunnel. It was carved from rough, gray rock, but beneath the stone joints, thick metal gears ground together with a sickening crunch.Glowing yellow eyes fixed right on us, cutting through the settling dust like searchlights.Zayden shoved me hard behind his back.He didn't pull a second weapon or look for an escape route in the enclosed space. He planted his boots in the dirt and raised his empty left hand toward the monster.A massive wave of crimson fire erupted from his palm. The flames burned so hot they instantly singed the ends of my hair and sucked the oxygen right out of the narrow tunnel. The fire swallowed the gargoyle whole, washing over its heavy wings and horned head.I braced myself for the sound of cracking stone and melting metal.Instead, the ancient runes carved deep into the monster's chest flared to life. They glowed a blinding, bright yellow, and the beast simply absorbed the royal magic. The fire
