Chapter 1
The Gilded Ruins
Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POV
The smell of mahogany and beeswax used to mean home, Now everything feels wrong and terrible.
I stood upstairs, holding the wooden railing of the second floor. I held the wooden rail so tightly that my fingers turned white. Below me, the ground floor of the De Santis Atelier, a space that had breathed life into Italian high fashion for over half a century was being stripped bare by men who didn't even have the decency to wipe their mud caked shoes on the welcome mat.
"Miss De Santis, the collection for the upcoming autumn runway has been taken to cover a huge debt.
“a voice squeaked from behind me”
I didn't turn around immediately, I couldn't. I watched as two officers roughly dragged away a mannequin wearing a hand beaded red velvet gown, the last piece my father had ever touched with his own hands before he disappeared. I touched the small half moon shaped scar near my left collarbone. a nervous habit i always do when i feel nervous or unable to breath.
"Under whose authority?" I asked.
My voice was low and smooth, stripped of the sheer panic clawing at my throat.
The chief bank agent stepped into my peripheral vision, holding a thick stack of legal documents tied with an ominous red ribbon. "The foreclosure notice was validated three hours ago, The default penalty was triggered overnight. Seven million euros. Payable by six o'clock this evening, or the property and all intellectual assets go to public auction."
Seven million.
I had never applied for, bearing a signature that looked frighteningly similar to my fathers handwriting” Six months ago, he had vanished into thin air, leaving behind an empty office, suspicions of debt, and a daughter desperately trying to keep a sinking ship afloat.
You will not carry away another thread until my legal team verifies those signatures."i said
"The signatures are legally binding on our end, Miss De Santis," the man muttered,
nervously checking his watch.
"Unless you have a sudden investor willing to absorb your loans in cash within an hour, the locks will be changed at midnight."
Then I walked into my private office and shut the heavy polished wood door, I pressed my forehead into my palms.the pain in my eyes was unbearable ,but I refused to let a single tear spill. seven million euro debts.
A soft knock interrupted the silence, and the door clicked open.
Gianna stepped inside. Her wavy honey blonde hair was pulled up in a chaotic bun, her expressive face pale, and her “hidden beneath tightly against her chest like a shield”
"They’re clearing out the silk vaults in the basement, Fio," Gianna whispered,
her voice trembling as she shut the door behind her.
"I tried to delay them at the loading dock, but they brought police escorts."
"Let them take the fabric," I said,
forcing my spine straight fabric can be repurchased.what about the physical records?”
Gianna took a slow “gasp” , walked over to my desk, and unzipped her leather collection. Instead of paper sketches, she pulled out a heavy, steel bound ledger with a burned edge, laying it between us with a heavy, metallic thud.
"I found this hidden in the hollow back panel of the pattern archives," she said,
her elegant eyes wide with fear. "Someone tried to burn it in the furnace room, but the fire didn't catch on completely. Fio... these aren't ordinary bank receipts."
I pulled the heavy book toward me.
Across dozens of ledger entries, massive blocks of text had been systematically wiped out. Dark red chemical eraser marks left thin, raw patches where names, company titles, and transfer amounts should have been. But whoever tried to destroy the record had missed the bottom margins.
"Moretti Corp," I breathed”
Gianna leaned over the desk, her brow furrowed. "The tech titan?
Why would a global company care about an independent fashion house?
"They don't care about fashion, Gianna," I said,
a cold realization settling into the pit of my stomach. "They care about control. Look at these dates. The loans weren't defaulted.
They were secretly purchased through secondary holding companies. Moretti Corp didn't just watch us fail. They engineered our collapse."
Every setback over the past six months, the terminated European contracts, the sudden shipping delays, the bank's refusal to extend our regular business credit, it hadn't been bad luck. It had been a calculated, unstoppable execution.
"Valeriano Moretti," Gianna whispered the name as if uttering it might summon him into the room.
The name alone carried “a crushing grip” across Italy. To the media, Valeriano Cosimo Moretti was the dislocated, brilliant corporate titan who had built an empire from nothing from scratch But in the hushed, fearful rumors of Milan’s high society, people spoke of him with genuine dread.
Rumors follows him everywhere whispers that his successful corporate tech empire was merely a successful company in front for the continent’s most lethal crime syndicate
I had seen him once, two years ago at a charity gala in Rome. He had stood near the floor to ceiling windows, surrounded by politicians who looked visibly terrified to speak to him. He was tall, impeccably tailored, with dark, neatly groomed hair and eyes like polished silver cold, calculating, and unreadable.
He hadn't said a single word to me that night, yet I remembered the terrifying weight of his gaze lingering on the back of my neck.
"Why would he do this to us?" I muttered,
I stared at the page covered in red marks "My father had nothing to do with Moretti."
Before Gianna could answer, the landline on my desk buzzed. The sharp, mechanical ring broke the silence through the heavy air.
We both froze. I looked at the flashing red light on the receiver, my heart was pounding in my chest against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I picked up the receiver. "Fiorenza De Santis."
There was no greeting. No polite corporate introduction. Just the low, dangerous rhythm of a voice that was used to commanding absolute silence.
"You are looking at the erased ledgers, Miss De Santis."
My grip tightened around the plastic until my knuckles went pale.
The voice was deep, smooth, and completely cold of warmth, a voice that belonged in a silent boardroom or a darkened alley.
"Mr. Moretti," I said, forcing my voice into an icy calm, though every instinct in my body screamed at me to run.
"I assume I have to thank you for the opportunists currently tearing my family's legacy apart.
A faint, heavy exhale came over the line. It wasn't a laugh, but the sound of a man barely amused by a passing irritation
"The men in your lobby are merely executing a legal process," Valeriano said,
His voice sounded through the phone "Your father's debts are vast, messy, and as of eight o'clock this morning, entirely owned by me. By midnight, the De Santis name will be legally extinct."
"If you think a paper trap is going to make me surrender, you severely misjudge me," I snapped,
my eyes blazed as I stared at his company's logo on the page.
"I will take this ledger to the financial courts before dawn."
"You won't make it to the courts," Valeriano replied coldly
his voice dropping a pitch into something dark and absolute.
"And the ledger in your hands is only a fraction of what your father truly owes me. You have five minutes, Fiorenza.
My vehicle is waiting in the rain at your rear exit. Step inside, and we will discuss the terms of your buyout... or stay inside, and watch your father's legacy burn to ash tonight."
The call ended. I stood there, unable to move the silence ringing in my ear.
the hollow dial tone echoing in my ear. Across the desk, Gianna stared at me, her breath catching. "Fio? What did he say?"
Slowly, I placed the receiver back to its phone. I walked over to the narrow window overlooking the alley behind the atelier. The rain started to fall making the cobblestones below shine under the streetlights
A large matte black sedan was parked beneath the dim yellow lamp . Its engine was running silently, exhaust curling into the damp night air. The windows were heavily tinted, making it impossible to see whoever sat waiting in the back seat.
I was standing on the edge of a ruin, and the man who had pushed me was holding out a velvet rope not to save me, but to lock me in his cage.
My hand drifted back to the scar on my collarbone, my heart racing a wild, dangerous rhythm. I turned away from the window, picked up my coat, and looked at Gianna.
"He isn't offering a buyout," I whispered, my voice lacing with a dark, stubborn resolve. "He's calling my bluff.”
Gianna face went pale
“Fio….
I turned back toward the window.
CHAPTER 6Valeriano POVThe rain over Lake Como did not fall, it lashed against the reinforced glass of the master suite like a warning, a relentless pounding rhythm that seemed to beat time against Fiorenza’s racing pulse. She stood stunned by the full height of the windows, her reflection ghostly against the dark, racing water of the lake below. The silk of her ivory travel gown felt less like a garment and more like a restraint, a crisp, elegant reminder of the contract signed in blood and ink just twenty four hours prior in the emptied out shell of the Milan atelier. With a trembling roughened thumb, she touched the small crescent shaped scar on her left collarbone, pressing down until the skin turned stark white, seeking physical pain to ground her against the surreal weight of her new reality. The heavy red reddish brown door clicked open with a soft, expensive lock.Valeriano.He didn't knock,He never knocked but He stepped into the room, shrugging off a charcoal overcoat
Chapter 5 Whispers in the Atelier Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe dawn light filtering through the high arched windows of the De Santis Atelier didn't feel like a new day,it made the place feel like something horrible had just happened.I stood in the center of the main showroom floor, the silence thick and heavy around me. The men in polyester suits were gone. The bailiffs had disappeared into the damp Milan morning, leaving the atelier looking almost abandoned empty brass racks, stripped mannequins, and carpet track marks like shallow graves.By six o'clock this morning, the emergency seal at Moretti Tower had ended as suddenly as it began a "system glitch," Valeriano’s chief security detail had called it with a face like carved ice, But I knew better. It had been a warning. A subtle reminder of the dark, invisible forces circling the man whose ring I was about to wear. The front glass doors opened with a soft, quick click, and Gianna slipped inside. She looked exhau
Chapter 4Terms of Enslavement Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe rain continued as we left the private club all the way to the upper glass spire of Moretti Tower. The chaos in the dining room, the split second roar of gunfire, the shattering glass, the way Valeriano’s broad body had slammed over mine to shield me before his security neutralized the ambush was still ringing in my ears. I hadn't even been allowed to bleed or understand the danger. Before I could see clearly, I was swept into an armored vehicle and whisked up sixty five floors into his main headquarters. Now, the executive suite was unusually quiet. The room smelled of expensive leather, cold rain against warm glass, and the remaining metallic smell of tension.Valeriano stood near the window, unbuttoning his blood stained cuffs and rolling them up his forearms. He didn't look frightened. He looked like a man who had simply stepped out of a temporary inconvenience. The pale glow of the Milan skyline lit up
Chapter 3 The Ambush Meeting Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe rain had turned the streets of Milan into black glass by the time the car pulled up outside Il Salotto, a private club hidden behind an unmarked limestone façade near the Galleria. There were no signboards, no paparazzi, only a heavy iron gate and a single guard who checked my name against a handwritten velvet guest list.I got out of the car, pulling my wool coat tighter around my shoulders. My heart was beating closely, and I could feel it in my chest . I had refused the black sedan Valeriano had sent to my atelier a tiny act of resistance perhaps, but one I needed to keep my knees from buckling. Instead, I had driven myself, bringing only the leather folder containing the partially burned ledger and the notes Gianna had managed to pull from our server archives.I was meeting a man named Signor Rossi, he is the chief rebuilding officer appointed by the central bank. Or at least, that was the name on the
CHAPTER 2 Shadow of the SyndicateValeriano Cosimo Moretti POVFrom the sixty fifth floor of Moretti Tower, Milan looks less like a historic city and more like a grid of light waiting to be claimed. Rain covers the last large windows, turning the church tower in the distance into grey, jagged teeth."The acquisition of the logistics hub in Genoa is complete. Signor Moretti," my Chief Financial Officer said, holding out a tablet with shaking hands. "The board signed off ten minutes ago.""Good," I said without turning around. My hands were held behind my back, the tailored wool of my suit jacket hiding the detailed dark ink that stretched across my shoulders and down my spine. a physical archive of blood, territory, and quiet vengeance. "Transfer forty percent of the available cash to our offshore holdings by midnight. Clear the remaining balance for the De Santis debt buyout.""Understood, sir." The CFO bowed slightly and backed out of the private observation room,
