LOGINCHAPTER 2
~~ETHAN WILDER~~ “Sign the papers, Ethan! I don’t have all the time in the world. It really is over between us. We are never getting married!” Sarah yelped, her patience wearing thin. I picked up the pen. My hand was steady, even though I felt my heart shattering into a million pieces. I signed the papers without a word. I made no eye contact as I pushed the documents back across the cold metal table. "You’re right, Sarah," I said, my voice dropping to a calm note. "I was a fool. But you have no idea what you’ve just thrown away. You think Julian Vane is the higher one? From where I’m standing, you’re both looking very, very small." She laughed again and the sound grated on my nerves. I watched quietly as she tucked the papers into her bag. "Stop fantasizing, Ethan. Be content with being worthless. Enjoy your freedom… I'm sure the streets will be very welcoming to a man with nothing. Goodbye, Ethan." She turned on her heel and vanished through the doors without a backward glance . I sat in the silence for a long moment. My chest constricted in physical pain. All the sacrifices I’d made over the last four years, protecting her image, guarding her brother’s reputation… only for her to turn on me like this? I blinked back the tears that threatened to fall. I wouldn't give this place, or her memory, another drop of my grief. An officer sauntered by, stopping right beside me. “What now? You want to serve more time? You don’t want to leave yet?” I stood up and walked toward the exit. I was done waiting. Right at the gate, Sinclair, the head of the guards, was waiting for me. Beside him stood a line of guards, and to my shock, all of them bowed their heads in unison as I approached. "Mr. Wilder," Sinclair said, his voice trembling with what sounded like genuine fear. "We... we apologize for the lack of respect shown by that woman. We should have intervened." I nodded negatively. “It’s best you didn’t” He stepped forward, holding out an opened suitcase. Inside sat a black gold card and a heavy, ancient-looking ring engraved with a rising phoenix. "The old man’s offer still stands, sir," Sinclair whispered. "The card has no limit. The ring gives you the power you need. He doesn’t want to be refused again” My eyes lingered on the items longer than I intended.. "I think it’s time I accepted." “Once you accept, you can no longer escape from it, sir” I reached for the phoenix ring and carefully slid it on. “I don’t intend to” The door of the vehicle was held open for me. I boarded ând settled in the back seat, a series of questions forming in my head. Why me? What did the Old Man see in me that made him think I deserved this? The woman I loved, the one I had sacrificed everything for, hadn't even blinked when she discarded me. I stared long and hard at the card between my fingers. There were only four of its kind in the world, and this one carried a balance of six hundred million dollars. "I should see the Old Man to thank him," I mentioned to Sinclair, who was watching my every move. “The Chairman is gone, Ethan.” I turned to him, shock settling on my features. “Gone? What do you mean? He was still there before they took me from the cell this morning.” Sinclair nodded. “He was bailed the instant you were taken out, and he left these for you. He said the gifts are a closing of a chapter. No visits, no thank-yous. Just live.” I was too stunned to speak. I drew in long breath, studying the ring for the hundredth time. I knew what it was... what it represented. This ring was the key to a network that could topple nations. “I’d better make the most of it then,” I muttered. Sinclair alighted from the vehicle, leaving me with the rest of the guards. “See to it that he settles well into his new life,” Sinclair ordered. The guards inclined their heads in acknowledgment as the car finally pulled away. ~~SARAH~~ I sat in front of the mirror, brushing my hair in slow, rhythmic movements. Clad in red lingerie, I felt powerful. A half-empty bottle of wine sat on the dresser, glinting in the dim light. Satisfied with my reflection, I turned around, a smile lighting up my face. “Today is such a happy day!” I exclaimed, jumping into the arms of Julian Vane, who lay half-naked on the bed. He stroked my hair tenderly. “Yeah, baby. It is.” “I signed the final papers. I am no longer ties to that ex convict" I snickered. "He’s probably rotting in the rain somewhere, dreaming of a life he’ll never have again.” Julian ran a thumb over my jawline, a matching smirk on his lips. “Good. A woman of your relevance shouldn’t be weighed down by a loser like him. He would only be a stain on your reputation.” “I made sure to let him understand that,” I said proudly. I bit my lower lip. “So... my reward?” Julian smirked. “You’ll never let it slide, will you? Fine. We sign the papers tomorrow and officially welcome you as a new partner of the Vane Empire.” My heart swelled with joy. This family was massive—bigger than anything Ethan Wilder could have even imagined in his pathetic life. Julian was giving me the world, something that "heroic" convict could never afford. Julian rolled me over, his body covering mine. “How about we forget the good-for-nothing ex-husband and focus on us?” he murmured, trailing kisses down my neckline. I squirmed underneath him, wrapping my arms around him to pull him closer. “Yes,” I whispered. “I totally agree.”~~LUCAS WILDER~~The fight started over something stupid. At least, that’s what I told myself later. It was Friday evening. The whole house smelled like mum’s favorite roast chicken with fries. Elara and I were supposed to be helping set the table, but things had felt off between us all day. Ever since the debate hall and Kai’s invitation, she had been distant. Short replies to my texts. Avoiding my eyes in the cafeteria. I finally caught her alone in the hallway near the dining room while Mom and Dad were still busy in the kitchen.“You’re actually thinking about going to Kai’s party, aren’t you?” I asked, keeping my voice low.Elara crossed her arms. That stubborn look I knew so well settled on her face. “Maybe. Why? It’s not like I have anything better to do this weekend.”Her words hit me hard. I stepped closer. “Because we said we’d be careful. Because every time you smile at him, it feels like you’re rubbing it in my face that I can’t do the same thing.”She gave a sharp little
~~Lucas Wilder~~The thing about hiding something huge is that the world keeps throwing little reminders at you, daring you to slip up.It was Thursday afternoon, and the debate hall was packed for the inter-house competition. I was supposed to be focused on my notes, but my eyes kept drifting to the front row where Elara sat. She had her legs crossed, scribbling something in her notebook, looking unfairly good in the school uniform. Our eyes met for half a second. She gave me that tiny, secret smile that made my chest do stupid things. Then Kai Lennox walked in.Tall, loud, and always dressed like he was about to shoot a music video instead of attend classes. Captain of the basketball team, rich parents, and a smile that made half the girls in school giggle. He dropped into the seat right next to Elara like he belonged there.“Johnson-Wilder,” he said, loud enough for me to hear from the back. “You look like you’re ready to destroy someone today. Save some energy for me after this, y
~~LICAS WILDER~~I hated how much I noticed her.Elara Johnson-Wilder walked through the world like she was daring it to try her. Head high, shoulders back, that sharp tongue ready to cut anyone who looked at her wrong. Especially me. We’d been at each other’s throats since we were kids, but lately.. it felt different. Dangerous.Tonight was one of those nights where the house felt too small.. Mom and Dad had gone to bed. Elara had disappeared into the garden after dinner like she always did when her head was loud. I told myself I was just checking on her. That was all.I found her sitting on the old stone bench under the oak tree, knees pulled to her chest, fairy lights glowing soft above her. She looked small there. Not the fierce girl who argued with me in the hallways every day. Just… Elara.I walked over without thinking. My heart was already hammering like I’d run sprints.“You’re going to freeze out here,” I said, stopping a few feet away. She didn’t look up. “Then go back
SIXTEEN YEARS LATER~~ELARA JOHNSON~~Elara Johnson hated Lucas Wilder more than she hated Monday mornings. That was the thought running through her head as she slammed her locker shut on a random Tuesday afternoon. The hallway at New York International Academy was loud with the usual after school chaos; kids shouting about football practice, someone blasting music from a phone speaker, the smell of cheap cafeteria fries hanging in the air. She adjusted the strap of her backpack and tried to ignore the way her heart was already racing.Because there he was.Lucas leaned against the wall opposite her locker like he owned the place. Tall, messy dark hair that always looked like he’d just rolled out of bed, and that stupid half smirk he wore whenever he saw her coming. He was in the same year as her. same grade, same hallway, same everything, even though she was five months older. Their mother had told them she hadn’t known she was pregnant with Lucas until she was four months gone.
~~ALINA WILDER~~Weeks had passed since Sarah showed up at our gate with that tiny bundle in her arms. Life had slowly started to feel… normal. Or at least, our version of it.I was in the nursery, humming softly as I rocked Elara to sleep. She was such a quiet baby, barely fussing even when she was hungry. Her little fingers curled around my thumb as I fed her, and every time she looked up at me with those wide, trusting eyes, my heart squeezed. I changed her, bathed her, sang the silly lullabies my father used to sing to me. Ethan had gone to the office for the first time in days ; something about finalizing the dissolution of the last Phoenix holdings. He hated leaving us, but I’d practically pushed him out the door.“Mommy’s got you,” I whispered to Elara as I laid her down in the crib. The word slipped out so naturally now. We hadn’t officially adopted her yet, but in every way that mattered, she was ours. Sarah’s promise to come back for her felt further away with each passing
~~ETHAN WILDER~~The library beneath the old Wilder estate had been sealed for decades. Dust floated in the narrow beams of our flashlights as we descended the hidden stairs behind the fireplace. Alina walked beside me, her hand in mine, the new engagement ring catching faint light every few steps. Behind us, Damian and my father followed slowly, with Freckles guarding the entrance above. No one spoke much. After months of chaos, this final step felt heavier than any gunshot or chase. We reached the chamber at the bottom. The Ouroboros box sat on a stone pedestal in the center dark wood and tarnished silver, the serpent devouring its own tail wrapped around two phoenixes. One rising, one falling. My ring and the second key rested in my palm.Alina’s fingers tightened around mine. “This is it,” she whispered. “Everything your father warned about. The ledger that could burn the whole system down.”I nodded. The scar on her wrist caught the light, the living second key. “We don’t open
~ALINA JOHNSON~ The ride back to the office was longer that's usual l. Maybe it was because the car was suffocating. All she wanted at the moment was to be alone. Phoenix Empire's building loomed into view and as soon as the car came to a stop, I didn't wait for Burly to open the door for me as u
~ETHAN WILDER~I needed adrenaline. My blood needed to run wild in my veins and push out Alina from my head and thoughts. She had come to say goodbye before leaving and it had taken all of willpower not to look up at her. Instead I nodded, glaring at the printed words yet not comprehending them for
~ALINA JOHNSON~Another eye-rolling groan left my lips for the umpteenth time in a span of 1 hour. My brain was oddly creative at the moment, pairing a shirtless Ethan with the smirk he gave me through the glass wall as if they had happened at the same time. Every now and then, my attention and tho
Ethan's POV My heavy eyes stared upwards at the ceiling as I'd not slept a wink throughout the night. The scene from earlier, her tear stained cheeks, the words I'd said to her in a fit of my frustration and the anger shimmering in her eyes as the doors closed between us. God! Had I been too har
