Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Deer
I knew about Addison. Lucas had mentioned her once in passing, though he assured me that they hadn't spoken in years.

Because everyone had a past, I never gave Addison much thought. Lucas had been so open about it that I trusted him and saw no reason to be suspicious.

Yet now, Addison had appeared at the wedding without warning.

One of her hands rested lightly on the noticeable bump on her stomach. She remained by the entrance, her eyes red as she stared at Lucas from across the ballroom.

The wineglass slipped from Lucas' hand and shattered on the floor.

Wine splashed across the hem of my dress, but he didn't seem to notice. His horrified gaze remained fixed on Addison's stomach.

All of a sudden, he sprang to his feet and strode toward the exit.

As I watched him hurry away, my stomach twisted with dread. I drew a deep breath, rose from my seat, and followed him out.

The moment I reached the corner, I heard Lucas' voice.

"Have you lost your mind? What are you doing here? Katherine and my entire family are right inside!"

Addison's voice choked with emotion. "I didn't want to come here either, but I didn't know where else to turn. The doctor said my uterine lining is too thin. If I terminate the pregnancy, I might never be able to conceive again."

Pregnancy?

My mind went blank. I bit down hard on my lower lip, too terrified to make a sound.

"You shouldn't have come here!" Lucas shouted, his voice strained with panic. "We were both drunk at the class reunion. It happened once. How could you have gotten pregnant?

"What am I supposed to do? I'm about to marry Katherine! You can't show up here pregnant and expect me to explain this to her!"

I remembered the reunion.

Three months ago, Lucas had attended a reunion with his former high school classmates. Late that night, he video-called me and explained that everyone had too much to drink, so they had booked several hotel rooms and planned to stay until morning.

I was worried he would wake up feeling sick, so I ordered a hangover remedy and had it delivered to the front desk.

Lucas never mentioned that Addison had also attended the reunion, let alone that they had spent the night together and even slept with one another.

We had been together for seven years.

Whenever we came close to taking our relationship further, Lucas would force himself to stop. Covered in sweat, he would retreat to the bathroom and take a cold shower.

Then, he would hold me and say, "I want to save everything for our wedding night."

I had always believed his restraint was proof of how deeply he loved and respected me, but reality had shown me otherwise.

His supposed devotion didn't even survive a few drinks, and that had been enough for him to end up in his ex-girlfriend's bed.

The seven years of restraint I had once treasured now felt like a cruel joke.

Lucas had always asked for my permission before doing something as simple as kissing my forehead. With another woman, however, he had cast aside every boundary he claimed to value.

Even the hangover remedy I had ordered because I was worried about him had ended up helping him recover after sleeping with Addison.

The thought of it made me sick.

Now, I finally understood why Lucas had adamantly refused to take part in the blessing the day before.

His stomach hadn't been acting up. He had refused because he was no longer a virgin.

Addison began sobbing harder and grabbed the hem of Lucas' shirt. "Lucas, I'm not asking you to take responsibility for us.

"I'm just scared, and I didn't know who else to turn to. I'll raise the baby on my own. I promise I won't come between you and Katherine."

"How can you say that?"

Lucas dragged an agitated hand through his hair. "This baby is mine. Do you really expect me to stand by while you struggle to raise our child alone? It's just… Katherine…"

After Lucas' explosive outburst, Addison dared not approach him. Instead, she called Beatrice and told her it was time for her prenatal checkup.Only then was Lucas pressured into taking her to the hospital, though he remained stone-faced throughout the appointment.Once the examination was over, the doctor glanced at the results and casually said, "She's a little anemic, so make sure she gets plenty of nutritious food. But the baby's developing very well. He's already a big boy for 17 weeks."Lucas' head snapped up, and he stared at the doctor. "Doctor, how far along is she?""17 weeks. Why? It's right there on the ultrasound report."17 weeks?Lucas' mind reeled.Only a little over 12 weeks had passed since the high school reunion three months ago. The dates were off by an entire month.Four months earlier, he hadn't even seen Addison. There was no way the baby could be his.Lucas seized Addison's wrist and shoved her against the wall. Through gritted teeth, he demanded, "Ad

Early the next morning, Lucas pushed open the door to the apartment.Addison had complained of being in pain all night. He had been too worried to leave her alone, so he had stayed by her side. It wasn't until she fell asleep that he finally found a chance to return home.On the way back, Lucas rehearsed countless apologies in his head. He even took a detour to buy my favorite croissants."Katherine, I'm home. I brought you your favorite—"His voice trailed off, and he froze. As he stared at the half-empty apartment, the bag slipped from his hand and hit the floor."Katherine? Katherine!"He frantically searched every room for me. In the end, all he found was a familiar key and the diamond ring he never managed to give me.A note had been placed beneath them, bearing only a short message."Don't contact me again."With trembling hands, Lucas pulled out his phone and called me."The number you have dialed is currently unavailable…"When he went on WhatsApp, he finally notice

After sending the breakup message on WhatsApp, I pulled my coat tighter around myself and walked alone through the streets. The cold wind made my stomach seize. A sharp cramp ripped through me, and my vision went dark as I crouched weakly by the side of the road.It took me a long time to gather enough strength to stand. Once I did, I hailed a taxi and headed to the hospital downtown. The hospital was bustling with people, but I checked myself in, paid the bill, and picked up my medication alone.Eventually, I sat in a corner of the infusion room, watching the IV fluid drip steadily into my vein.A nurse noticed how pale I looked and handed me a paper cup. "Why don't you get some hot water and hold the cup against your stomach? It might help with the pain."I thanked her, then carried my IV bag with me as I trudged toward the water dispenser. However, the moment I rounded the corner, I stopped in my tracks.A familiar figure was sitting on a bench not far away.It was Lucas.H

I booked a ticket for the next train back to the city.Once I reached the apartment I shared with Lucas, reminders of our life together surrounded me.We had carefully chosen every piece of furniture, and the pictures we planned to use for our wedding invitations were still spread across the coffee table.I sat on the couch and stared into space for a long time.We had spent seven years together, more than 2,500 days and nights. Habits had a way of becoming part of a person's life before they even realized it.I was used to waking up to the glass of warm water Lucas prepared for me every morning. My favorite snacks were always waiting in the passenger seat of his car, and every holiday brought another thoughtful surprise that made me feel loved.Breaking those habits was bound to be painful.Even so, I began packing.I removed our matching clothes from the closet, separated the matching key chains by the front door, and took down the travel photos covering the refrigerator.E

I couldn't bear to listen to another word and stepped around the corner."Katherine? D-Did you hear us?"Lucas jerked away from Addison as though he had been burned, the color draining from his face. He instinctively moved toward me and reached for my hand, but I stepped back before he could touch me.My gaze dropped to the hand that had held mine through countless streets over the years. Now, the mere sight of it made my stomach turn."Don't touch me. You're disgusting."Lucas' hand froze in midair. His eyes reddened as he stared at me."Katherine, I made a mistake. I was really drunk that night. Everyone kept pushing me to drink, and I don't even remember how I got to the hotel, much less what happened afterward."He hurriedly raised a hand as though taking an oath."I swear you're the only woman I love. That night was an accident. Please forgive me just this once, Katherine. Think about everything we've shared over the past seven years. We're supposed to get married next yea
