Chapter 2

Author: Moonlit Spring
Giselle posted the photo in the family group chat.

[Dad looks like a fat pig. That centipede scar on his stomach is so ugly. Why does he always have to embarrass himself like this by stealing the same handsome outfit Uncle Olly picked out?]

My hands and feet went cold.

Then Oliver stepped out of the fitting room next door in the same swimsuit. Its cut accentuated the clean lines of muscle across his waist and stomach.

Every eye in the store turned toward him.

"God, this guy's body is unreal. Those abs, that V-line. His girlfriend must be living the dream."

"Who's that next to him? Look at all that flab on his stomach and that sagging waist. He looks like day-old pork nobody wanted to buy."

I felt as though I had been stripped bare.

Helpless, I looked toward Eleanor, but her intense, unwavering gaze remained fixed on Oliver. She did not notice my humiliation at all.

The family group chat erupted with laughter at my expense. Someone even joked that I should be sent off to learn sumo wrestling.

I fled into the fitting room and struggled to catch my breath.

When Giselle was three, she was diagnosed with severe kidney failure. I turned out to be a match, but my body was too weak to meet the requirements for donation. I had no choice but to force myself to gain weight by any means necessary.

Ten meals a day was the minimum. I ate until I threw up, then forced myself to eat again. I went from the campus heartthrob who made girls blush to a fat man buried beneath layers of flab.

Before the surgery, I asked Giselle if she would stop loving me now that I had become ugly. She burst into tears and told me that, in her heart, I would always be the best dad in the whole world.

Even so, I developed severe anxiety about my body and was later diagnosed with moderate depression.

Eleanor tried to help me through it. Once Giselle was old enough to understand, she often comforted me too and told me that the marks on my body were proof of my love for her.

Now, a wound I thought had healed had been ripped open again, raw and bleeding. The pain tightened around my chest until I could barely breathe.

Outside the door, I heard mother and daughter chuckling quietly, clearly pleased with themselves.

"That's what Dad gets. Last time, he called Uncle Olly out in the family group chat for leaving his things everywhere. This is his punishment."

My legs gave out, and I sank against the wall. I did not open the door until I heard Eleanor call for me to come out so we could head home.

As we left the store, Oliver shot me a taunting look and swung the bulging shopping bag in his hand. "Bro, next time you buy clothes, ask me first. If we end up matching, I'm worried you'll embarrass yourself."

Giselle burst out laughing and hurried over to take some of Oliver's bags.

Eleanor shoved a cheap swim cap into my hands. "You're not exactly young anymore. Anyone can see you have no confidence in your body. Something practical like this suits you better."

My nails dug into my palms hard enough to break the skin. I forced down the bitterness that rose in my chest. It was not that practicality suited me. In Eleanor's eyes, I simply did not deserve anything better than a cheap giveaway.

Oliver walked shoulder to shoulder with Eleanor and winked at me. "Elle, I still haven't bought sunglasses."

Eleanor grabbed my wrist and yanked me backward. "Don't rush home yet. There's still something we need to do."

I stumbled back several steps and scraped my arm against the sharp edge of a gift bag.

Blood welled up instantly. The sudden sting made me suck in a sharp breath, but neither Eleanor nor Giselle spared me a glance. They simply followed Oliver back into the store.

A hushed gasp came from beside me.

A little girl who happened to be passing by pulled a bandage from her bag and held it out to me. "You're Moonfang, right?"

Something stirred deep in my chest. I nodded hesitantly.

The girl gave an excited squeal. "I've seen every one of your photographs. I'm your biggest fan! But you haven't posted anything new in eight years."

Ten years ago, I had been a top photographer at the height of my fame. Every photograph I took captured the subject's singular spirit and charm.

Eleanor fell in love with my photography and went to great lengths to track down my contact information. She brought me flowers in the morning, a homemade lunch prepared with care at noon, and a cup of hot cocoa in the evening.

Her sincerity moved me, and I accepted her proposal.

After we married, her career flourished while I divided my time between our home and the wilderness.

But Giselle had been frail since birth, and her health eventually forced me to become a stay-at-home father. From then on, I never touched a camera again.

I had insisted on going to Eldwater Hollow for our honeymoon because Eleanor once promised that we would take our wedding photos there, in the place where we had fallen in love.

She had forgotten the happiness we once promised to pursue together, so I chose to set out alone.

Eleanor still refused to leave, stubbornly keeping watch outside my door.I exported my photos and submitted my entry for the competition.During the two weeks I waited for the results, Giselle brought me a fresh bouquet every single day.As for Eleanor, she spent a small fortune setting off fireworks every night for two weeks straight. The dazzling displays lit up half the sky, but they could no longer illuminate any future between us.At the end of every display, three words appeared across the sky: [I am sorry.]Vera sipped her beer and slid a bowl of peanuts toward me. "This is an even bigger show than when she first chased after you. You really don't feel anything?"I looked out the window at the woman staring longingly in my direction, then picked up the camera beside me. "Nothing. All I want now is to be myself. I don't want to be trapped in a kitchen again or confined to a home that was never truly mine."Outside the window, Eleanor lowered her head and forced a bitter,

The makeup artist's hands moved with practiced ease, brushing softly across my face.I stared at my reflection in the mirror as my features gradually grew sharper and more handsome.Without meaning to, I remembered a moment from ten years ago, when I had curled up against Eleanor with a bare face. She had kissed me on the lips and promised that no matter what I became, she would always love me.But over time, Eleanor came to resent how little care I put into my appearance. Instead, she praised Oliver for knowing how to dress and always looking young and full of sunshine. To prepare for the wedding photos at Eldwater Hollow, I had started spending an hour at the gym every week, hired a personal trainer, and learned how to dress better. I had wanted to look a little sharper, all in the hope that I could hold on to Eleanor's heart.I picked up my camera and snapped a photo of the makeup artist as she adjusted my tie.Somehow, Eleanor and Giselle found out where I was and tracked me

Eleanor walked up to me with red-rimmed eyes and pulled me tightly into her arms.Cold tears slid down my skin and settled in the curve of my neck as she buried her face there, looking utterly miserable."Vince, can we please not get divorced?"Giselle came up beside me and took my hand. Her eyes were wet as she pleaded with me, "Dad, please don't give up on me and Mommy."On the flight to Eldwater Hollow, I had imagined how Eleanor and Giselle might react once they realized I was gone. They probably thought I was throwing another tantrum to get their attention.I hated their indifference. I hated that they never understood me. Most of all, I hated that they always chose Oliver over me.I had thought that when I saw Eleanor and Giselle again, I would explode and scream at them to get out of my life. But now, I felt nothing at all. They might as well have been strangers.Eleanor's tears soaked into my collar. I shoved her away impatiently. She choked back a sob and tried to exp

Vincent's POVWhen I landed at Eldwater Hollow, I went straight to the guesthouse I had booked in advance. The owner, Vera Lacross, was one of my devoted fans, and she had arrived at the airport early to pick me up.She peered past me as if searching for someone, then asked in confusion, "Where are your wife and daughter? Weren't you and your wife supposed to take a set of wedding photos here at Eldwater Hollow for your tenth anniversary?"I pressed my lips together in a faint smile. "We're getting a divorce."Vera gasped in disbelief, then pressed me for an explanation. "Back when Eleanor was throwing money around like crazy to win you over, there were drone shows scattering rose petals over Eldwater Hollow every single night during the month you finally agreed to be with her."She even knelt before the snow mountain and swore she'd never let you down for the rest of her life. How did things end in divorce?"The love we had shared back then really had been intense, unforgettabl

Bit by bit, Eleanor's spine curled forward as she opened the divorce agreement. At the bottom, Vincent's signature sat neat and deliberate. Her heart plunged into an ice cellar. In that instant, she finally understood just how serious their fight had become.Oliver woke up hungry and pushed open the bedroom door. "Did my brother pack our bags? Have him make some pancakes. We can eat before we go."Normally, the moment he said something like that, Eleanor would order Vincent to get it done, and Giselle would chime in too, impatiently urging him to hurry. But today, neither mother nor daughter answered.Oliver frowned and complained out of habit, "Elle, did you hear me? I'm hungry."An image flashed through Eleanor's mind: Vincent forcing himself to stay awake long enough to make breakfast every single morning.Oliver was picky. The pancake batter and sauces had to be freshly made from scratch.Vincent had always suffered from insomnia. He would barely manage half an hour of sle

Third-Person POVWhen the sunlight stung her eyes awake, Eleanor instinctively shoved at the person lying beside her. "Vince, go close the curtains."An unfamiliar scent of cigarette smoke hit her nose, and she snapped fully awake.Eleanor turned and saw Oliver lying on the pillow beside her. Panic surged through her as she threw back the blanket. She was still fully dressed, and Oliver was wearing pajamas. Nothing had happened. She had not done anything to betray Vincent. The commotion woke Giselle, who sleepily burrowed into Oliver's arms, reluctant to get up. "Dad, I want to sleep a little longer."The next second, her eyes flew wide when she saw Oliver in front of her, and she burst into loud sobs. "Why is it Uncle Olly?"Annoyed by the noise, Oliver kicked Giselle off the bed.Eleanor reached for her, but she was too late. She could only watch helplessly as Giselle hit the floor, her forehead immediately swelling red.She scooped Giselle into her arms, her heart aching, a
