Chapter 3

Author: Moonlit Spring
When I said goodbye to the girl, I told her earnestly, "I'll post something soon. I won't keep you all waiting too long."

The clack of high heels sounded behind me.

Eleanor walked up with a frown. "What exactly are you dawdling for? You won't pick out a swimsuit, and you won't buy sunglasses either.

"Put that look away. I promise I'll go with you next time. Isn't that good enough?"

When it came to me, it was always next time. For Oliver, it was always right now.

When he wanted a new pair of trendy sneakers, Eleanor scoured the entire city and paid a premium to have them sourced, determined to put them in his hands that very day.

When I wanted the newest Nikon lens on the market, she promised to have a friend buy it for me.

But after I spent a full week waiting in anticipation and finally asked why the package still hadn't arrived, she told me she'd forgotten.

To Eleanor, I had long since stopped mattering.

Maybe my expression had grown too grim, because her tone softened. "Vincent, he's your brother. Why bother competing with him?"

I nodded quietly in agreement.

Satisfied, she smiled and leaned against my shoulder as she made another promise. "Once we get to Eldwater Hollow, I'll have my assistant book the best wedding photography studio and makeup artist in advance.

"You should lose some weight in the meantime. Only then will you deserve everything I've worked so hard to arrange."

Oliver and Giselle came out with their arms full of shopping bags, panting from exhaustion.

"Let's head home. We practically bought out the whole store."

Eleanor's eyes filled with indulgence as she took the bags Oliver handed her.

Rain poured down in sheets, splashing against my legs and soaking the cuffs of my pants.

Countless gift bags had taken over both my seat and the passenger seat.

Rain hammered against the car windows.

Oliver leaned his head out, looking a little sheepish. "Bro, maybe just grab a cab home. There's no room left for you."

Without paying the slightest attention to my hand, Giselle slammed the car door shut with all her strength.

Pain exploded through my knuckles. I yanked my hand back and stumbled away, but my foot found no solid ground. Half my body plunged into an open manhole in the road.

My watch struck the pavement, and its face spiderwebbed with cracks.

Eleanor started to get out of the car to check on me, but Oliver spoke up with concern in his voice. "The rain's only getting heavier. If we can't see the road later, it'll be dangerous to drive."

She started the engine, tossed out a curt "Take care of yourself," and drove away without a backward glance.

Raindrops the size of beans pelted me, each one stinging against my skin. I bit down hard on the soft flesh inside my mouth.

Eleanor had specially commissioned this watch from a master craftsman as a gift for our eighth anniversary.

As I struggled to steady myself, shards from the shattered watch face dug into my flesh. My love for Eleanor had cut just as deeply over the long years, until it had slowly worn away and we could hardly stand the sight of each other.

I took off the watch and picked the shards of glass from my skin, as if I could remove every trace of the love I had carried for her all these years.

The downpour soaked me to the bone. Every gust of wind sent a chill through my body.

Did Eleanor truly no longer care whether I was cold?

I let out a bitter laugh and pulled out my phone to call a cab, only to find that the rain had damaged it. The screen lit up for a moment before going completely black.

My watch lay abandoned in the filthy water. I stood beneath the bus stop shelter and waited for the rain to let up. I had no idea how much time passed before the downpour finally began to ease.

A woman collecting recyclables called after me, "Hey, you don't want that watch anymore?"

I smiled and glanced down at my bare wrist. "No. I don't."

Eleanor still refused to leave, stubbornly keeping watch outside my door.I exported my photos and submitted my entry for the competition.During the two weeks I waited for the results, Giselle brought me a fresh bouquet every single day.As for Eleanor, she spent a small fortune setting off fireworks every night for two weeks straight. The dazzling displays lit up half the sky, but they could no longer illuminate any future between us.At the end of every display, three words appeared across the sky: [I am sorry.]Vera sipped her beer and slid a bowl of peanuts toward me. "This is an even bigger show than when she first chased after you. You really don't feel anything?"I looked out the window at the woman staring longingly in my direction, then picked up the camera beside me. "Nothing. All I want now is to be myself. I don't want to be trapped in a kitchen again or confined to a home that was never truly mine."Outside the window, Eleanor lowered her head and forced a bitter,

The makeup artist's hands moved with practiced ease, brushing softly across my face.I stared at my reflection in the mirror as my features gradually grew sharper and more handsome.Without meaning to, I remembered a moment from ten years ago, when I had curled up against Eleanor with a bare face. She had kissed me on the lips and promised that no matter what I became, she would always love me.But over time, Eleanor came to resent how little care I put into my appearance. Instead, she praised Oliver for knowing how to dress and always looking young and full of sunshine. To prepare for the wedding photos at Eldwater Hollow, I had started spending an hour at the gym every week, hired a personal trainer, and learned how to dress better. I had wanted to look a little sharper, all in the hope that I could hold on to Eleanor's heart.I picked up my camera and snapped a photo of the makeup artist as she adjusted my tie.Somehow, Eleanor and Giselle found out where I was and tracked me

Eleanor walked up to me with red-rimmed eyes and pulled me tightly into her arms.Cold tears slid down my skin and settled in the curve of my neck as she buried her face there, looking utterly miserable."Vince, can we please not get divorced?"Giselle came up beside me and took my hand. Her eyes were wet as she pleaded with me, "Dad, please don't give up on me and Mommy."On the flight to Eldwater Hollow, I had imagined how Eleanor and Giselle might react once they realized I was gone. They probably thought I was throwing another tantrum to get their attention.I hated their indifference. I hated that they never understood me. Most of all, I hated that they always chose Oliver over me.I had thought that when I saw Eleanor and Giselle again, I would explode and scream at them to get out of my life. But now, I felt nothing at all. They might as well have been strangers.Eleanor's tears soaked into my collar. I shoved her away impatiently. She choked back a sob and tried to exp

Vincent's POVWhen I landed at Eldwater Hollow, I went straight to the guesthouse I had booked in advance. The owner, Vera Lacross, was one of my devoted fans, and she had arrived at the airport early to pick me up.She peered past me as if searching for someone, then asked in confusion, "Where are your wife and daughter? Weren't you and your wife supposed to take a set of wedding photos here at Eldwater Hollow for your tenth anniversary?"I pressed my lips together in a faint smile. "We're getting a divorce."Vera gasped in disbelief, then pressed me for an explanation. "Back when Eleanor was throwing money around like crazy to win you over, there were drone shows scattering rose petals over Eldwater Hollow every single night during the month you finally agreed to be with her."She even knelt before the snow mountain and swore she'd never let you down for the rest of her life. How did things end in divorce?"The love we had shared back then really had been intense, unforgettabl

Bit by bit, Eleanor's spine curled forward as she opened the divorce agreement. At the bottom, Vincent's signature sat neat and deliberate. Her heart plunged into an ice cellar. In that instant, she finally understood just how serious their fight had become.Oliver woke up hungry and pushed open the bedroom door. "Did my brother pack our bags? Have him make some pancakes. We can eat before we go."Normally, the moment he said something like that, Eleanor would order Vincent to get it done, and Giselle would chime in too, impatiently urging him to hurry. But today, neither mother nor daughter answered.Oliver frowned and complained out of habit, "Elle, did you hear me? I'm hungry."An image flashed through Eleanor's mind: Vincent forcing himself to stay awake long enough to make breakfast every single morning.Oliver was picky. The pancake batter and sauces had to be freshly made from scratch.Vincent had always suffered from insomnia. He would barely manage half an hour of sle

"Vince, go close the curtains."An unfamiliar scent of cigarette smoke hit her nose, and she snapped fully awake.Eleanor turned and saw Oliver lying on the pillow beside her. Panic surged through her as she threw back the blanket. She was still fully dressed, and Oliver was wearing pajamas. Nothing had happened. She had not done anything to betray Vincent. The commotion woke Giselle, who sleepily burrowed into Oliver's arms, reluctant to get up. "Dad, I want to sleep a little longer."The next second, her eyes flew wide when she saw Oliver in front of her, and she burst into loud sobs. "Why is it Uncle Olly?"Annoyed by the noise, Oliver kicked Giselle off the bed.Eleanor reached for her, but she was too late. She could only watch helplessly as Giselle hit the floor, her forehead immediately swelling red.She scooped Giselle into her arms, her heart aching, a
