Chapter 4

Author: Moonlit Spring
By the time I got home, Eleanor was coming out of the bedroom with a bowl of chicken soup in her hands.

My heart sank. I did not ask why she had suddenly decided to cook.

Last month, on my 30th birthday, I had begged Eleanor to make me a bowl of my favorite ribs. She had refused without the slightest room for negotiation.

"I don't know how to cook," she had claimed.

A rare flicker of awkwardness crossed Eleanor's face, and she hurried to explain herself. "Oliver and Gigi both got soaked. I was worried they'd catch a cold, so I made some chicken soup. There's more in the pot. Do you want some?"

I glanced toward the kitchen. All that remained in the pot were a few shreds of chicken coated in pepper floating in watery dregs.

"No."

Giselle let out a disdainful snort and exposed the truth without hesitation. "Mom never made any for you in the first place. She promised her love would only ever belong to me and Uncle Olly."

Even though I kept telling myself I no longer cared about Eleanor, I could not stop the ache that spread through my chest.

"How did you hurt your hand?" Eleanor's breath caught for a moment before she went to the living room and rummaged through the first aid kit.

I still had not forgiven her for leaving me behind in the pouring rain, and I had no desire to accept her kindness.

Just as I was about to tell her I was fine, a sharp, prickling pain shot through my wrist, as if ants were biting into my skin.

Eleanor covered her nose and mouth in disgust, then liberally sprayed me with disinfectant. "Oliver isn't in good health, and you're filthy. You must have brought all kinds of germs home. If he gets sick, I'll be the one stuck sitting by his bed and taking care of him."

Every word struck like a hammer blow and shattered what remained of my heart.

I stood frozen as Eleanor doused me with disinfectant three times, followed by alcohol five times, before she tossed a set of sterile clothes at me.

Oliver took small, smug sips of his chicken soup and clinked bowls with Giselle in a toast. Then he suddenly rushed into the bedroom and returned with several cameras. "Bro, give me a camera. I want to get some shots on the flight tomorrow."

Those cameras had traveled with me across nearly the entire Northern Hemisphere. They were treasured companions I could not bear to part with.

"No."

Oliver's mouth turned down in a wounded pout, and he looked to Eleanor for help.

Eleanor shot me an impatient glare before shoving all the cameras into Oliver's arms. "If you want them, take them. Worst case, I'll just buy your brother more."

Oliver raised an eyebrow, clearly pleased with himself.

A calculating gleam flashed in his eyes as he pointed to the newest-looking camera in the bunch. "Elle, I'll just take this one. If I take all of them, Bro will be upset."

Eleanor smiled. "That's just how kind you are, Olly."

I stared at the camera in Oliver's arms. Our initials, mine and Eleanor's, were still engraved on the body.

She had forgotten. It was the wedding gift she had given me when we were newly married.

Then again, perhaps it was for the best. Someone else had taken it off my hands, which meant I would not have to throw it away myself.

Giselle flashed me a wicked smile and shoved the rest of the cameras off the table with all her strength.

They hit the floor with a series of heavy, sickening crashes. The cameras shattered into pieces, and even the memory cards came loose.

My mind went blank.

I crouched down and gathered the scattered parts, pressing the power buttons over and over, but not a single camera would turn on.

My dream and my passion had been reduced to a pile of scrap by the people closest to me.

The room spun violently around me. I struck the edge of the table, and the pain drained what little strength I had left. I could not even get back to my feet.

Eleanor sighed in exasperation and nudged my leg with her foot. "It's just a few broken cameras. Do you really need to put on such a pathetic act? When you're done performing, get up and pack. The flight's at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning."

With that, she took Oliver and Giselle back to the bedroom to rest.

I lay on the cold floor for a long time before I finally managed to force myself up.

Giselle's sweet, wheedling voice drifted from the bedroom. "Uncle Olly, Mommy, sleep with me tonight."

I looked at the wreckage scattered across the floor, pulled out my spare phone, connected it to the printer, and printed a divorce agreement.

After I signed it, I left it on the table.

The bedroom light went out. No one cared whether I was there.

I gathered my documents and slipped out without a sound.

This was not my home. Eleanor was no longer my wife, and Giselle was no longer my child. I did not want any of it anymore.

Eleanor still refused to leave, stubbornly keeping watch outside my door.I exported my photos and submitted my entry for the competition.During the two weeks I waited for the results, Giselle brought me a fresh bouquet every single day.As for Eleanor, she spent a small fortune setting off fireworks every night for two weeks straight. The dazzling displays lit up half the sky, but they could no longer illuminate any future between us.At the end of every display, three words appeared across the sky: [I am sorry.]Vera sipped her beer and slid a bowl of peanuts toward me. "This is an even bigger show than when she first chased after you. You really don't feel anything?"I looked out the window at the woman staring longingly in my direction, then picked up the camera beside me. "Nothing. All I want now is to be myself. I don't want to be trapped in a kitchen again or confined to a home that was never truly mine."Outside the window, Eleanor lowered her head and forced a bitter,

The makeup artist's hands moved with practiced ease, brushing softly across my face.I stared at my reflection in the mirror as my features gradually grew sharper and more handsome.Without meaning to, I remembered a moment from ten years ago, when I had curled up against Eleanor with a bare face. She had kissed me on the lips and promised that no matter what I became, she would always love me.But over time, Eleanor came to resent how little care I put into my appearance. Instead, she praised Oliver for knowing how to dress and always looking young and full of sunshine. To prepare for the wedding photos at Eldwater Hollow, I had started spending an hour at the gym every week, hired a personal trainer, and learned how to dress better. I had wanted to look a little sharper, all in the hope that I could hold on to Eleanor's heart.I picked up my camera and snapped a photo of the makeup artist as she adjusted my tie.Somehow, Eleanor and Giselle found out where I was and tracked me

Eleanor walked up to me with red-rimmed eyes and pulled me tightly into her arms.Cold tears slid down my skin and settled in the curve of my neck as she buried her face there, looking utterly miserable."Vince, can we please not get divorced?"Giselle came up beside me and took my hand. Her eyes were wet as she pleaded with me, "Dad, please don't give up on me and Mommy."On the flight to Eldwater Hollow, I had imagined how Eleanor and Giselle might react once they realized I was gone. They probably thought I was throwing another tantrum to get their attention.I hated their indifference. I hated that they never understood me. Most of all, I hated that they always chose Oliver over me.I had thought that when I saw Eleanor and Giselle again, I would explode and scream at them to get out of my life. But now, I felt nothing at all. They might as well have been strangers.Eleanor's tears soaked into my collar. I shoved her away impatiently. She choked back a sob and tried to exp

Vincent's POVWhen I landed at Eldwater Hollow, I went straight to the guesthouse I had booked in advance. The owner, Vera Lacross, was one of my devoted fans, and she had arrived at the airport early to pick me up.She peered past me as if searching for someone, then asked in confusion, "Where are your wife and daughter? Weren't you and your wife supposed to take a set of wedding photos here at Eldwater Hollow for your tenth anniversary?"I pressed my lips together in a faint smile. "We're getting a divorce."Vera gasped in disbelief, then pressed me for an explanation. "Back when Eleanor was throwing money around like crazy to win you over, there were drone shows scattering rose petals over Eldwater Hollow every single night during the month you finally agreed to be with her."She even knelt before the snow mountain and swore she'd never let you down for the rest of her life. How did things end in divorce?"The love we had shared back then really had been intense, unforgettabl

Bit by bit, Eleanor's spine curled forward as she opened the divorce agreement. At the bottom, Vincent's signature sat neat and deliberate. Her heart plunged into an ice cellar. In that instant, she finally understood just how serious their fight had become.Oliver woke up hungry and pushed open the bedroom door. "Did my brother pack our bags? Have him make some pancakes. We can eat before we go."Normally, the moment he said something like that, Eleanor would order Vincent to get it done, and Giselle would chime in too, impatiently urging him to hurry. But today, neither mother nor daughter answered.Oliver frowned and complained out of habit, "Elle, did you hear me? I'm hungry."An image flashed through Eleanor's mind: Vincent forcing himself to stay awake long enough to make breakfast every single morning.Oliver was picky. The pancake batter and sauces had to be freshly made from scratch.Vincent had always suffered from insomnia. He would barely manage half an hour of sle

"Vince, go close the curtains."An unfamiliar scent of cigarette smoke hit her nose, and she snapped fully awake.Eleanor turned and saw Oliver lying on the pillow beside her. Panic surged through her as she threw back the blanket. She was still fully dressed, and Oliver was wearing pajamas. Nothing had happened. She had not done anything to betray Vincent. The commotion woke Giselle, who sleepily burrowed into Oliver's arms, reluctant to get up. "Dad, I want to sleep a little longer."The next second, her eyes flew wide when she saw Oliver in front of her, and she burst into loud sobs. "Why is it Uncle Olly?"Annoyed by the noise, Oliver kicked Giselle off the bed.Eleanor reached for her, but she was too late. She could only watch helplessly as Giselle hit the floor, her forehead immediately swelling red.She scooped Giselle into her arms, her heart aching, a
