Chapter 16: The Ledger of Sins

"If you keep breaking into my rooms like a common burglar, Theodore, I’m going to start charging you rent," Adrian muttered, sliding the balcony glass shut to block out the biting autumn wind.

Theodore didn't smile. He unbuttoned his dark wool overcoat, letting it fall carelessly onto the silk-draped armchair, and pulled a thick, leather-bound ledger from his inner pocket. "You won't care about rent once you read what’s inside this."

"What is that?" Adrian asked, his gaze locked on the worn leather.

"Proof that your father is about to sign away his own grave," Theodore said, tossing the heavy book onto the four-poster bed. "Open it, Adrian. See for yourself."

Adrian hesitated, his hand hovering over the cracked leather spine before he finally flipped the cover open by the dim, flickering light of the bedside candle. The pages were densely packed with neat, unforgiving columns of handwritten figures, dates, and bank routing numbers that made his stomach drop.

"These aren't standard corporate mergers," Adrian whispered, scanning a row of figures detailing massive, off-the-books land transfers. "This is embezzlement. Where did you get this?"

"From a safe in Gregory Bellweather’s primary residence that his security team thought was impenetrable," Theodore replied, stepping closer until the heat of his body cut through the chill of the room. "Look at the dates, Adrian. Right around the time your father’s firm acquired the northern industrial sector."

Adrian traced a line of ink with a trembling finger, his breath catching in his throat as the horrifying truth began to snap into sharp, undeniable focus. "The Wexfords didn't just back out of that municipal contract years ago... they engineered the default so my father would have to take out emergency loans through Bellweather's shell companies."

"And now, under the guise of this weekend's grand merger, they’re cashing in the collateral," Theodore said quietly, his voice dropping an octave as he leaned in over Adrian’s shoulder. "They aren't partnering with Hollingsworth Enterprises. They’re executing a hostile corporate execution."

"If my father signs those papers tomorrow morning, he becomes an accessory to financial fraud without even knowing the full extent of it," Adrian said, his head spinning as the foundational pillars of his entire life cracked right down the middle. "The federal investigators would trace every single one of these shell accounts straight back to our board of directors."

"They won't just trace it, Adrian. They’ll indict every single person whose signature is on the restructuring documents," Theodore corrected sharply, grabbing Adrian by the wrist to force him to look up from the damning pages. "That includes you. Your father had you sign preliminary advisory consent forms last week, didn't he?"

Adrian’s blood ran ice cold as the memory slammed into him. "Tuesday morning. In his private study before the board meeting."

"There it is," Theodore said bitterly. "They built the trap, and your own father handed you the bait. They needed a Hollingsworth with a clean public record to take the fall when the SEC finally starts auditing those offshore accounts."

"Why are you showing me this?" Adrian demanded, pulling his arm free and spinning around to face Theodore squarely, his eyes flashing with a mix of fury and raw betrayal. "You could have used this to destroy my family months ago. Why bring it to me now, in the middle of the night, on property owned by the very people trying to ruin us?"

"Because destruction without a witness is just a slaughter," Theodore answered, his dark eyes holding Adrian’s gaze without a single flicker of hesitation. "I want your father’s empire dismantled, yes. But I want you standing beside me when the dust settles, not buried underneath the rubble."

"You expect me to just turn my back on everything my family built?" Adrian challenged, his voice rising despite the late hour, the sheer weight of his heritage pressing down on his chest like a lead weight. "That name is all I’ve ever known."

"It's a cage, Adrian, and you know it," Theodore stepped closer, closing the remaining inches between them until Adrian could feel the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest. "Look at the numbers. Look at what they did to keep their hands clean while your father took the risks. They don't view you as an heir; they view you as a shield."

Adrian looked back down at the ledger, the flickering candlelight casting long, dancing shadows across the incriminating columns of ink. Every single line represented a lie, a bribe, or a backroom deal orchestrated by men who smiled at dinner parties while plotting the financial execution of their so-called allies. The blind loyalty he had worn like a tailored suit for twenty-five years suddenly felt less like protection and more like a suffocating shroud.

"If I walk away from the merger tomorrow, my father will disown me before the sun sets," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper.

"Let him," Theodore urged, his hand reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair from Adrian's forehead, the touch surprisingly tender amidst the storm of corporate warfare. "Let him cut you out. I didn't bring you this ledger so you could save his company, Adrian. I brought it so you could save yourself."

Adrian swallowed hard, the sharp taste of fear giving way to a cold, hard resolve as he slowly closed the heavy leather cover of the ledger. "What do we do when the sun comes up?"

"We let them think they’re winning," Theodore smiled, a dark, dangerous curve of his lips that promised absolute devastation. "And then, at the exact moment they think the trap has snapped shut, we tear the foundation out from underneath them."

"Lawrence Hollingsworth is going to kill me," Adrian muttered, though the familiar terror of his father's wrath was suddenly replaced by a strange, intoxicating sense of freedom.

"Only if we let him," Theodore replied, stepping back toward the balcony doors as the first pale, gray hints of dawn began to bleed through the heavy velvet curtains. "Keep the ledger under your mattress. When your father knocks on your door in an hour to head back to the city, act like the dutiful son one last time."

"And where will you be?" Adrian asked, watching the shadow of the man who had upended his entire world slip back toward the glass.

"Waiting," Theodore said quietly, vanishing into the rainy morning mist before Adrian could say another word.

A heavy silence settled back over the guest bedroom, broken only by the frantic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. Adrian slid the heavy ledger beneath the mattress, the bulk of it pressing firmly against his spine through the springs, a constant, physical reminder of the war that was about to begin.

A sharp, authoritative knock hammered against the heavy oak bedroom door, shattering the stillness of the dawn.

"Adrian!" Lawrence Hollingsworth’s voice boomed from the hallway, cold, demanding, and utterly devoid of warmth. "Get up. We’re heading back to the city, and we have a multi-billion-dollar empire to finalize."

Adrian stood slowly from the edge of the bed, smoothing down the front of his wrinkled shirt with steady hands, and walked across the room to open the door to his father.

Muffled shouting echoed from the direction of the main gallery, followed by the heavy, authoritative stamp of polished oxfords marching straight toward the west wing."Damn it," Adrian breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.He lunged forward, his thumb hovering over the eject button of the micro-scanner, but the progress bar stubbornly lingered at thirty-four percent. If he pulled the cable now, the corrupted data would wipe the entire cache, leaving him with nothing to show for his treason. He needed at least sixty percent to crack Bellweather’s offshore routing numbers. The doorknob rattled violently."Who left this latch disengaged?" Gregory Bellweather’s voice boomed from the hallway, sharp and poisoned

Chapter 34: Almost CaughtThe progress bar on the micro-scanner crawled across the small monochrome screen with agonizing slowness. Seven percent. Eight percent. The amber glow of the security console cast long, skeletal shadows against the mahogany bookshelves of Gregory Bellweather’s private study, illuminating the sweat beading sharply along Adrian’s jawline."Move faster," Adrian hissed under his breath, his eyes darting from the creeping percentage bar to the heavy oak door behind him.The silence of the west wing was absolute, save for the rhythmic, high-pitched whir of the mainframe processing the encrypted downloads. Every second felt like an hour, every microsecond stretched to a breaking point as the weight of total destruction hung over his shoulders. If Bellweather returned now, if a security guard decided to check this corridor, there would be no excuses left to hide behind. He was knee-deep in high-treason corporate espionage, stealing the very blueprints of his family’s

Adrian slipped inside the room in a single fluid motion, shutting the door behind him and leaning his back against the solid wood. The study was pitch black, save for the faint, pulsing amber glow of a security console nestled in the far corner. He didn't waste a second. Crossing the Persian rug in long, silent strides, he dropped to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a mediocre landscape oil painting."Clara said quadrant four, toggle left twice, right to seventy," Adrian muttered, his hands moving swiftly over the dial. The heavy metal door swung open with a muffled hiss of depressurization. Moving with practiced stealth in the pitch-black ballroom, he slipped sideways through a heavy velvet drapery that concealed a service corridor. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old dust, floor wax, and electricity. He pulled a master key from his pocket—a delicate, brass tool Clara had managed to smuggle out of the estate office three days prior."Don't fail me now, Clara," Adrian muttered under his breath, his footsteps silent against the thick runners of the back hallway. The west wing was a labyrinth of shadows, stripped of the glittering artifice that defined the public rooms. Silver cutlery clinked loudly against fine china in the sudden quiet, followed immediately by the rising murmur of panicked confusion."Stay right here," Theodore whispered into the darkness, his hand brushing against Adrian’s shoulder with a firm, grounding pressure. "Do not move an inch until the emergency backup generators kick in.""Where are you going?" Adrian hissed back, reaching out blindly into the blackness, but his fingers brushed only empty air."To turn off the lights for good," came the faint, amused whisper from somewhere several feet away, swallowed up immediately by the rising tide of anxious voices arou

He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching a group of senior bank executives exchange nervous whispers near the champagne fountain. "Let them circle. If anyone here suspects why we actually came, the execution won't wait for a courtroom.""They don't suspect anything," Theodore repli
