Chapter 17: The Dawn Departure

The heavy oak door swung open with a dry, protesting creak, revealing Lawrence Hollingsworth fully dressed in a charcoal-grey bespoke suit that looked as though it had been pressed with an iron skillet. His silver hair was combed back with ruthless precision, and his cold, slate-grey eyes immediately scanned Adrian from head to toe, searching for any sign of defiance or disobedience.

"You look pale," Lawrence said without a word of greeting, pushing past his son into the guest bedroom without waiting for an invitation. His polished leather shoes clicked sharply against the hardwood floor. "The Wexford estate does that to men with weak constitutions. Get your bag. The town car is idling in the gravel drive, and I will not be kept waiting by my own blood."

Adrian didn't flinch, keeping his posture rigidly composed as he mirrored the older man's calculating stare. "I'm packed, Father. Just had to secure my things."

Lawrence stopped mid-stride, his gaze darting suspiciously toward the rumpled bedsheets where the heavy leather ledger lay hidden just inches beneath the mattress springs. A fraction of an inch of dark binding protruded, barely visible to an untrained eye, but Lawrence’s hawk-like gaze missed very little in a room he considered his domain.

"What's that?" Lawrence demanded, taking a sharp step back toward the bed, his hand extending as if to rip the mattress back himself.

Adrian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, but his voice remained chillingly level. "Just a portfolio of my personal notes regarding the restructuring analytics. I didn't want the estate staff packing it with the laundry."

Lawrence’s hand hovered for a second over the mattress before dropping to his side with a dry huff of dismissal. "Keep your personal notes in your briefcase where they belong. We have an executive pre-meeting with the Wexford representatives the moment we step foot in headquarters. If you’re late, or if you hesitate when elder Wexford presses on the asset valuation metrics, I will ensure your name is stripped from the board seats permanently."

"I understand," Adrian said smoothly, picking up his leather duffel bag from the mahogany chair. The weight of the bag felt light, but the physical sensation of the hidden ledger pressing into the mattress as he walked past it sent a sharp jolt of adrenaline straight through his veins.

"Good," Lawrence snapped, turning on his heel and striding briskly down the hallway. "Move. Time is money, Adrian, and right now, you are costing me both."

They descended the grand staircase of the Wexford manor in absolute silence, the towering stone walls and faded portraits of dead aristocrats watching them like silent judges. The morning air outside was biting and thick with the metallic scent of approaching rain, a heavy grey fog rolling across the manicured lawns and wrapping around the iron gates.

Parked at the bottom of the grand steps was the obsidian town car, its engine purring with a low, predatory hum. A chauffeur stood holding the rear door open, his face expressionless.

As Adrian approached the vehicle, a flicker of movement near the distant stables caught his eye. Through the dense fog, a dark silhouette leaned casually against a wooden fence post, a tall, unmistakable figure watching them leave. Even from fifty yards away, Adrian could feel Theodore’s gaze burning into him, a silent reminder of the war they had just declared.

"Get in," Lawrence commanded, already sliding across the leather upholstery of the back seat and adjusting his cuffs.

Adrian paused with his hand on the open door, looking back one last time toward the stables. The figure was gone, vanished into the thick morning mist just as he had vanished from the bedroom balcony hours earlier.

"Adrian. Now," Lawrence’s voice cracked like a whip from inside the dark interior of the car.

Adrian climbed inside, the heavy door thudding shut behind him with a damp, final sound that sealed away the Wexford estate and everything inside it. The vehicle glided smoothly down the gravel drive, tires crunching against the wet stones as they accelerated toward the main gates.

Lawrence pulled a thick silver tablet from his briefcase, tapping the screen with a manicured finger without looking up. "Once we’re back in the city, I want you to pull the Q3 performance reports for the subsidiary land acquisitions. Bellweather has been sniffing around the zoning permits in the eastern district, and I want to know if he’s trying to undercut our margins before the merger is officially signed."

Adrian stared out the rain-streaked window as the iron gates of the Wexford estate blurred past them, replaced by the desolate, winding highway that led back to the concrete jungle of the city.

"Bellweather is always sniffing around something," Adrian said quietly, his voice carrying a dangerous, hidden undertone that made Lawrence finally look up from his screen.

Lawrence narrowed his eyes, studying his son with a sudden, sharp intensity. "What did you say?"

"I said," Adrian turned his head slowly, meeting his father’s suspicious glare with a cold, unbreakable smile, "we should look very closely at everything Gregory Bellweather has been signing lately. He might not be the ally you think he is."

Lawrence let out a short, dismissive laugh, shaking his head as he returned to his tablet. "Gregory Bellweather is an old-guard player. He understands leverage and he understands bloodlines. He’s an asset to this merger, not a threat. Worry about your own numbers, Adrian, not his."

"We'll see who understands leverage soon enough," Adrian muttered under his breath, leaning back against the cool leather seat as the city skyline finally pierced the grey horizon ahead.

The town car sped faster down the slick asphalt, eating up the miles between them and the Hollingsworth headquarters, bringing them hurtling toward a boardroom pre-meeting that would ignite a corporate civil war.

Neither man spoke for the remainder of the drive, the suffocating tension in the back seat thick enough to suffocate them both.

When the car finally slowed to a halt in the subterranean parking garage of the Hollingsworth tower, the driver popped the trunk, and Lawrence stepped out into the fluorescent-lit concrete with the stride of a conqueror unaware his kingdom was already burning.

Adrian stepped out behind him, adjusting the lapels of his jacket, his mind racing back to the guest bedroom, the hidden ledger, and the man waiting for him in the shadows.

Before Lawrence could take three steps toward the private elevator, a sharp chime echoed from his breast pocket. Lawrence pulled out his secure corporate phone, glanced at the screen, and stopped dead in his tracks. His face drained of color in a fraction of a second, the ironclad composure cracking for the very first time.

"What is it?" Adrian asked, taking a slow step forward, a sudden surge of triumph cutting through the morning chill.

Lawrence didn't answer immediately. He stared at the screen, his fingers trembling ever so slightly against the glass, before looking up at Adrian with eyes wide with sudden, unadulterated panic.

"The Wexford legal team," Lawrence whispered, his voice uncharacteristically hollow. "They’ve just frozen the merger negotiations."

Muffled shouting echoed from the direction of the main gallery, followed by the heavy, authoritative stamp of polished oxfords marching straight toward the west wing."Damn it," Adrian breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.He lunged forward, his thumb hovering over the eject button of the micro-scanner, but the progress bar stubbornly lingered at thirty-four percent. If he pulled the cable now, the corrupted data would wipe the entire cache, leaving him with nothing to show for his treason. He needed at least sixty percent to crack Bellweather’s offshore routing numbers. The doorknob rattled violently."Who left this latch disengaged?" Gregory Bellweather’s voice boomed from the hallway, sharp and poisoned

Chapter 34: Almost CaughtThe progress bar on the micro-scanner crawled across the small monochrome screen with agonizing slowness. Seven percent. Eight percent. The amber glow of the security console cast long, skeletal shadows against the mahogany bookshelves of Gregory Bellweather’s private study, illuminating the sweat beading sharply along Adrian’s jawline."Move faster," Adrian hissed under his breath, his eyes darting from the creeping percentage bar to the heavy oak door behind him.The silence of the west wing was absolute, save for the rhythmic, high-pitched whir of the mainframe processing the encrypted downloads. Every second felt like an hour, every microsecond stretched to a breaking point as the weight of total destruction hung over his shoulders. If Bellweather returned now, if a security guard decided to check this corridor, there would be no excuses left to hide behind. He was knee-deep in high-treason corporate espionage, stealing the very blueprints of his family’s

Adrian slipped inside the room in a single fluid motion, shutting the door behind him and leaning his back against the solid wood. The study was pitch black, save for the faint, pulsing amber glow of a security console nestled in the far corner. He didn't waste a second. Crossing the Persian rug in long, silent strides, he dropped to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a mediocre landscape oil painting."Clara said quadrant four, toggle left twice, right to seventy," Adrian muttered, his hands moving swiftly over the dial. The heavy metal door swung open with a muffled hiss of depressurization. Moving with practiced stealth in the pitch-black ballroom, he slipped sideways through a heavy velvet drapery that concealed a service corridor. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old dust, floor wax, and electricity. He pulled a master key from his pocket—a delicate, brass tool Clara had managed to smuggle out of the estate office three days prior."Don't fail me now, Clara," Adrian muttered under his breath, his footsteps silent against the thick runners of the back hallway. The west wing was a labyrinth of shadows, stripped of the glittering artifice that defined the public rooms. Portraits of severe, dead Bellweathers watched him from the gloom, their painted eyes seeming to track his hurried progress. According to the architectural blueprint

Silver cutlery clinked loudly against fine china in the sudden quiet, followed immediately by the rising murmur of panicked confusion."Stay right here," Theodore whispered into the darkness, his hand brushing against Adrian’s shoulder with a firm, grounding pressure. "Do not move an inch until the emergency backup generators kick in.""Where are you going?" Adrian hissed back, reaching out blindly into the blackness, but his fingers brushed only empty air."To turn off the lights for good," came the faint, amused whisper from somewhere several feet away, swallowed up immediately by the rising tide of anxious voices arou

"You look like a man walking to his own execution, and the vultures are already circling."Adrian didn't flinch. He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching a group of senior bank executives exchange nervous whispers near the champagne fountain. "Let them circle. If anyone here suspects why we actually came, the execution won't wait for a courtroom.""They don't suspect anything," Theodore repli
