Chapter 8: Packing for the Abyss

"You're packing the wrong shirts."

Lawrence’s voice didn't rise above a dry scrape of parchment, yet it cut through the dim, amber-lit silence of Adrian’s dressing room like a scalpel.

Adrian didn’t stop folding the heavy charcoal wool trousers. His hands remained steady, though his pulse hammered a frantic, erratic rhythm against his ribs. The leather ledger he had stolen from Theodore—the one detailing the illicit land grabs and the precise anatomy of his family’s impending financial ruin—rested safely, heavily, beneath a stack of crisp white cottons at the bottom of the vintage Louis Vuitton trunk.

"The charcoal and the navy are more than sufficient for a weekend at Wexford Manor, Father," Adrian replied evenly, not turning around to face the doorway where his father stood blocking the exit.

Lawrence stepped further into the room, his leather-soled shoes clicking sharply against the herringbone floor. He looked every bit the titanium titan of industry: perfectly tailored, utterly devoid of warmth, and smelling faintly of expensive scotch and cedar. His grey eyes swept over the half-packed trunk with clinical disapproval.

"Sufficient is the language of mediocrity, Adrian," Lawrence snapped, reaching out to flick the edge of a folded lapel with a manicured fingernail. "The Wexfords judge a man by the thread count of his vestments before they ever listen to his balance sheet. Pack the double-breasted charcoal with the chalk stripe. And wear the onyx cufflinks. Not the silver ones. Silver suggests you're hedging your bets."

Adrian swallowed the sharp retort burning the back of his throat. "I'll wear the onyx."

"Good." Lawrence turned sharply toward the door, pausing with his hand resting on the heavy brass knob. Without looking back, he dropped the bomb. "We leave at dawn. The private transport will be idling at the curb at five sharp. Do not keep Arthur waiting. The merger signing cannot afford delays just because my son overslept."

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, sealing Adrian back into his private cage.

For a long moment, Adrian simply stood there in the quiet room, his chest rising and falling in shallow, controlled breaths. Dawn. That gave him roughly three hours before Lawrence’s enforcers dragged him out to the car, three hours before the descent into the Gothic fortress of the Wexford estate. Three hours to process the absolute insanity of what he had agreed to.

Then we burn it all down together.

The ghost of Theodore’s whisper still seemed to linger in the chilled air by the window. Adrian shivered, rubbing his forearms as a sudden draft rattled the antique windowpanes.

A sharp, staccato buzz from his bedside table shattered the silence.

Adrian froze. He slowly turned his head. His personal iPhone lay face-down on the mahogany nightstand, the screen flashing a brilliant, silent white against the dark wood.

Buzz.

He crossed the room in two strides, flipping the device over. A text message from an unknown number. No, not unknown. The number was scrubbed, routed through a dozen foreign proxies, but he knew the sender with a terrifying certainty.

Is the trunk deep enough for the truth, Adrian?

Adrian’s fingers hovered over the glass screen, his heart performing a violent acrobatics routine against his ribs. He glanced toward the closed door, half-expecting Lawrence to re-enter and demand to know who was texting his heir at three-thirty in the morning.

He tapped out a frantic reply.

Where are you? Wexford is a fortress. My father is watching every move I make.

The reply came back instantly, almost as if the sender was sitting directly outside on the rain-slicked ledge.

Fortresses are built to keep people out, darling. But they make terrible tombs when you lock the arsonist inside with you. Pack warm. The English countryside is freezing when the old guard starts bleeding.

Adrian let out a breathless, humorless laugh, his thumb flying across the keys.

You’re insane.

And you're terrified, the prompt response flashed back, accompanied by a single, mocking digital smirk. See you at the gates, Hollingsworth.

Before Adrian could type another word, the screen went completely black. The connection terminated, leaving him staring at his own pale, strained reflection in the dark glass.

His phone buzzed one last time. Not a text, but a system notification.

Email received.

Adrian’s breath hitched. He tapped the mail icon. It was a digital dossier, encrypted and self-deleting, sent from an anonymous burner address. He opened it with a trembling thumb. The file name read: Wexford_Vulnerability_Matrix.p*f.

Before he could click to d******d, a progress bar flashed across the screen: Self-destructing in 60 seconds.

"Damn it," Adrian hissed under his breath, scrambling to hit export just as the numbers began to tick backward. 59... 58... 57...

The screen scrolled past blinding rows of offshore accounts, shell companies, and cross-collateralized loans that directly linked Gregory Bellweather to the Wexford estate’s underground acquisitions. It was a blueprint of treason, a weapon so lethal it could obliterate both families before the weekend was even half over.

12... 11... 10...

"Come on, save," Adrian muttered, his finger hammering the export icon as the progress bar inched toward completion.

3... 2... 1...

The screen blinked white, then went entirely dead. The file vanished into the ether, leaving behind only a blank inbox.

Adrian exhaled a massive, shuddering breath, his hands dropping limply to his sides as the phone clattered against the nightstand. He checked the automatic backup folder on his secure cloud. The transfer had completed with literally half a second to spare.

He had the weapon. Now he had to walk straight into the lion's den and figure out how to use it without getting his own throat torn out.

A sudden, aggressive knock rattled his bedroom door.

"Adrian!" Lawrence’s voice boomed through the wood, sharp as a cracked whip. "It’s four-forty-five. Get out of bed. The car is waiting."

Adrian stood tall, every muscle in his body suddenly locked into rigid, defensive obedience. He walked over to the trunk, reached down, and brushed his fingers over the hidden leather ledger at the bottom, feeling its dense, unyielding weight beneath the wool.

The boy who had worn the tailored tuxedo to the gala hours ago was gone. In his place stood something far colder, far sharper, and infinitely more dangerous.

"I'm awake, Father," Adrian called out, his voice entirely devoid of hesitation as he locked the brass latches of the trunk with a decisive, echoing snap. "Let's go to Wexford."

Muffled shouting echoed from the direction of the main gallery, followed by the heavy, authoritative stamp of polished oxfords marching straight toward the west wing."Damn it," Adrian breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.He lunged forward, his thumb hovering over the eject button of the micro-scanner, but the progress bar stubbornly lingered at thirty-four percent. If he pulled the cable now, the corrupted data would wipe the entire cache, leaving him with nothing to show for his treason. He needed at least sixty percent to crack Bellweather’s offshore routing numbers. The doorknob rattled violently."Who left this latch disengaged?" Gregory Bellweather’s voice boomed from the hallway, sharp and poisoned

Chapter 34: Almost CaughtThe progress bar on the micro-scanner crawled across the small monochrome screen with agonizing slowness. Seven percent. Eight percent. The amber glow of the security console cast long, skeletal shadows against the mahogany bookshelves of Gregory Bellweather’s private study, illuminating the sweat beading sharply along Adrian’s jawline."Move faster," Adrian hissed under his breath, his eyes darting from the creeping percentage bar to the heavy oak door behind him.The silence of the west wing was absolute, save for the rhythmic, high-pitched whir of the mainframe processing the encrypted downloads. Every second felt like an hour, every microsecond stretched to a breaking point as the weight of total destruction hung over his shoulders. If Bellweather returned now, if a security guard decided to check this corridor, there would be no excuses left to hide behind. He was knee-deep in high-treason corporate espionage, stealing the very blueprints of his family’s

Adrian slipped inside the room in a single fluid motion, shutting the door behind him and leaning his back against the solid wood. The study was pitch black, save for the faint, pulsing amber glow of a security console nestled in the far corner. He didn't waste a second. Crossing the Persian rug in long, silent strides, he dropped to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a mediocre landscape oil painting."Clara said quadrant four, toggle left twice, right to seventy," Adrian muttered, his hands moving swiftly over the dial. The heavy metal door swung open with a muffled hiss of depressurization. Moving with practiced stealth in the pitch-black ballroom, he slipped sideways through a heavy velvet drapery that concealed a service corridor. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old dust, floor wax, and electricity. He pulled a master key from his pocket—a delicate, brass tool Clara had managed to smuggle out of the estate office three days prior."Don't fail me now, Clara," Adrian muttered under his breath, his footsteps silent against the thick runners of the back hallway. The west wing was a labyrinth of shadows, stripped of the glittering artifice that defined the public rooms. Portraits of severe, dead Bellweathers watched him from the gloom, their painted eyes seeming to track his hurried progress. According to the architectural blueprint

Silver cutlery clinked loudly against fine china in the sudden quiet, followed immediately by the rising murmur of panicked confusion."Stay right here," Theodore whispered into the darkness, his hand brushing against Adrian’s shoulder with a firm, grounding pressure. "Do not move an inch until the emergency backup generators kick in.""Where are you going?" Adrian hissed back, reaching out blindly into the blackness, but his fingers brushed only empty air."To turn off the lights for good," came the faint, amused whisper from somewhere several feet away, swallowed up immediately by the rising tide of anxious voices arou

"You look like a man walking to his own execution, and the vultures are already circling."Adrian didn't flinch. He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching a group of senior bank executives exchange nervous whispers near the champagne fountain. "Let them circle. If anyone here suspects why we actually came, the execution won't wait for a courtroom.""They don't suspect anything," Theodore repli
