Chapter 9: Arrival at the Wexford Manor

The motorcade of two midnight-black Rolls-Royces sliced through the dense, sprawling Berkshire mist like scythes through silk. Outside the fogged windows, the landscape was a blur of ancient weeping willows and jagged slate outcroppings, all swallowed by the encroaching gloom of dawn.

Adrian sat in the dead silence of the back seat, his shoulders pressed rigidly against the plush leather headrest. Across from him, Lawrence Hollingsworth did not look at the scenery. His eyes were fixed on a stack of physical balance sheets clamped to a mahogany clipboard, a silver fountain pen twitching rhythmically between his knuckles.

"Check your phone, Adrian," Lawrence commanded without lifting his gaze. The command was flat, devoid of warmth, an absolute law of nature. "If investor relations calls from Frankfurt, you take it. They are jittery about the Liverpool maritime acquisition."

"My phone has been silent for twenty minutes, Father," Adrian replied, his voice chillingly even. He kept his hands flat on his thighs, his fingers just millimeters away from the heavy leather trunk resting on the floorboards between his feet. Inside that trunk, hidden beneath layers of bespoke wool and silk, lay the stolen financial ledgers Theodore had slipped into his possession.

Lawrence finally looked up, his pale blue eyes narrowing as they searched Adrian’s face. "You look pale. If this weekend trip to Wexford Manor is going to turn into a display of undergraduate weakness, you should have stayed in the city."

"I am entirely focused on the merger," Adrian said, meeting his father’s gaze without a flinch. The lie rolled off his tongue with terrifying ease. He was no longer the boy who stammered in the dressing room or panicked beneath Gregory Bellweather's probing gaze. Every hour under Lawrence’s thumb had forged him into something hard, brittle, and lethal.

The vehicle lurched as the tires transitioned from asphalt to crushed white gravel.

Through the frost-edged glass, the iron gates of Wexford Manor loomed out of the mist like the jaws of some mythical iron beast. They were towering, spiked monoliths of wrought iron, bearing the crest of the Wexford family—a rampant stag entangled in barbed wire. The gates groaned on ancient, well-oiled hinges, swinging inward to grant them passage.

The estate itself was an architectural monument to ruthless old-money dominance. Wexford Manor sprawled across acres of manicured, brutalist landscaping—dark stone walls covered in suffocating blankets of ivy, narrow Gothic windows that stared out like unblinking eyes, and towering chimneys belching gray smoke into the morning fog. It was a place designed to intimidate, to remind every visitor of their absolute insignificance before the altar of generational wealth.

The cars came to a synchronized, hissing halt in the circular drive before the grand double doors of the manor.

Before the driver could even step out to open the door, Adrian pushed his side open, stepping out directly onto the damp gravel. The morning air hit him like a physical blow—frigid, damp, smelling of wet earth, decaying leaves, and old money.

"Keep up, Adrian," Lawrence muttered, brushing past him with long, predatory strides as the heavy oak doors of the manor swung open from the inside.

Waiting in the cavernous, stone-flagged foyer stood a single butler, his posture so rigid he might as well have been carved from the same limestone pillars framing the entrance. Behind him, the high vaulted ceilings echoed with the hollow, distant ticking of a grandfather clock that sounded less like time passing and more like a countdown.

"Welcome to Wexford Manor, Mr. Hollingsworth. Master Arthur is expecting you in the blue study," the butler intoned, his eyes cast downward in practiced, servile disdain.

Adrian stepped across the threshold, his boots clicking sharply against the stone floor. He paused for a fraction of a second, looking back out through the open doors toward the vanishing mist of the drive. Somewhere out there beyond those iron gates, hidden in the treeline, Theodore was watching. He could feel it in the electric static of the air.

"Adrian," Lawrence’s voice snapped from the end of the grand hall, impatient and sharp.

Adrian turned away from the door, the heavy oak panels slamming shut behind him with a resounding, final thud that locked the outside world away.

"Coming, Father," Adrian said, his boots falling into step behind the man who had raised him, unaware that every step they took further into the manor was a step deeper into a trap.

Chapter 35: The Escape Route"Twenty-five percent," Adrian hissed, his fingers gripping the edge of the mahogany desk as the micro-scanner flashed its tiny amber light.Outside the heavy oak doors, a sudden concussive thud shook the hallway floorboards. Muffled shouting echoed from the direction of the main gallery, followed by the heavy, authoritative stamp of polished oxfords marching straight toward the west wing."Damn it," Adrian breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.He lunged forward, his thumb hovering over the eject button of the micro-scanner, but the progress bar stubbornly lingered at thirty-four percent. If he pulled the cable now, the corrupted data would wipe the entire cache, leaving him with nothing to show for his treason. He needed at least sixty percent to crack Bellweather’s offshore routing numbers. The doorknob rattled violently."Who left this latch disengaged?" Gregory Bellweather’s voice boomed from the hallway, sharp and poisoned

Chapter 34: Almost CaughtThe progress bar on the micro-scanner crawled across the small monochrome screen with agonizing slowness. Seven percent. Eight percent. The amber glow of the security console cast long, skeletal shadows against the mahogany bookshelves of Gregory Bellweather’s private study, illuminating the sweat beading sharply along Adrian’s jawline."Move faster," Adrian hissed under his breath, his eyes darting from the creeping percentage bar to the heavy oak door behind him.The silence of the west wing was absolute, save for the rhythmic, high-pitched whir of the mainframe processing the encrypted downloads. Every second felt like an hour, every microsecond stretched to a breaking point as the weight of total destruction hung over his shoulders. If Bellweather returned now, if a security guard decided to check this corridor, there would be no excuses left to hide behind. He was knee-deep in high-treason corporate espionage, stealing the very blueprints of his family’s

Chapter 33: The Copy"Found you," Adrian whispered, his fingers closing around the cold brass handle of the heavy mahogany double doors at the very end of the private study corridor. The master key turned with a soft, mechanical click that sounded entirely too loud in the dead silence of the west wing. Adrian slipped inside the room in a single fluid motion, shutting the door behind him and leaning his back against the solid wood. The study was pitch black, save for the faint, pulsing amber glow of a security console nestled in the far corner. He didn't waste a second. Crossing the Persian rug in long, silent strides, he dropped to his knees in front of the concealed wall safe hidden behind a mediocre landscape oil painting."Clara said quadrant four, toggle left twice, right to seventy," Adrian muttered, his hands moving swiftly over the dial. The heavy metal door swung open with a muffled hiss of depressurization. Inside, neatly stacked rows of physical bearer bonds and leather-boun

Chapter 32: The Vault"Gregory, get a grip on yourself, it's just a blown transformer," a woman's shrill voice cut through the dark, echoing across the marble floor.Adrian didn't wait to hear Gregory Bellweather's defensive retort. Moving with practiced stealth in the pitch-black ballroom, he slipped sideways through a heavy velvet drapery that concealed a service corridor. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old dust, floor wax, and electricity. He pulled a master key from his pocket—a delicate, brass tool Clara had managed to smuggle out of the estate office three days prior."Don't fail me now, Clara," Adrian muttered under his breath, his footsteps silent against the thick runners of the back hallway. The west wing was a labyrinth of shadows, stripped of the glittering artifice that defined the public rooms. Portraits of severe, dead Bellweathers watched him from the gloom, their painted eyes seeming to track his hurried progress. According to the architectural blueprint

Chapter 31: The Circuit BreakerThe crystal chandeliers overhead flickered once, twice, casting a brief, anxious shadow over the sea of silk and tailored wool before plunging the expansive ballroom into absolute, suffocating darkness.Gasps erupted instantly from the assembled elites, a collective intake of breath that sounded like a dry wave breaking against a cliff. Silver cutlery clinked loudly against fine china in the sudden quiet, followed immediately by the rising murmur of panicked confusion."Stay right here," Theodore whispered into the darkness, his hand brushing against Adrian’s shoulder with a firm, grounding pressure. "Do not move an inch until the emergency backup generators kick in.""Where are you going?" Adrian hissed back, reaching out blindly into the blackness, but his fingers brushed only empty air."To turn off the lights for good," came the faint, amused whisper from somewhere several feet away, swallowed up immediately by the rising tide of anxious voices arou

Chapter 30: The Auction HouseThe ballroom was a suffocating sea of glittering diamonds, heavy velvet drapery, and the suffocating scent of expensive perfume mingling with old money panic. Every surface gleamed under the fractured light of three massive crystal chandeliers, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished marble floor.Adrian adjusted the lapel of his custom-tailored suit, his fingers deliberately brushing against the hidden interior seam where the micro-scanner rested like a ticking bomb against his ribs."Stop fidgeting," a low, smooth voice murmured right beside his ear. "You look like a man walking to his own execution, and the vultures are already circling."Adrian didn't flinch. He kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching a group of senior bank executives exchange nervous whispers near the champagne fountain. "Let them circle. If anyone here suspects why we actually came, the execution won't wait for a courtroom.""They don't suspect anything," Theodore repli
