LOGINThe choice
The cold hospital room reverberated with the steady beep of machines. Sophia was sitting by her father's bedside holding his frail hand as the fluorescent lights above her buzzed softly.
From his arms, tubes were connected.
Her fingers shook.
“I'm in pain. Don't leave me to bear this burden alone.”
All she got was silence.
His once powerful hand which had helped her navigate both life and business now felt like glass because it was too still and too delicate.
A sharp knock on the door shattered the silence. And quickly, Sophia wiped her face dry.
She wouldn't want them to see her crying
A nurse peered in. “It's time for his medication, Miss Bennett.”
With a nod, Sophia got up. “Give me a call if anything changes.”
Her heels echoed like a countdown through the hallway outside the room.
24 hours. Adrian Drake gave her that. She had twenty-four hours to make the decision to sell herself, her future and her name in order to preserve her fathers legacy. Or watch as everything burns.
Under silence, chaos simmered back at the Bennett estate.
Another email reminding everyone of the emergency meeting in 48 hours had been sent by the board.
Another shareholder had withdrawn. A refund was requested by another investor.
She poured a glass of wine for herself but it remained unfinished. She entered her father's study which was dust-lined wood-paneled and unaltered since the scandal.
The wall had a newspaper clipping pinned to it like a scar.
“Amidst chaos, the CEO of Bennett Global was hospitalized after being implicated in a corruption scandal.”
In the picture, her father was seen being led out of a courtroom looking pale and gaunt. There was another article next to it, this one with the name of Adrian's cousin Julian.
Julian Drake: New face of corporate rescue?
Sophia's jaw tightened. She recalled that day like a dream how the leak had spread like wildfire and how Julian had stepped out to the spotlight in a matter of hours shedding crocodile tears and evasive assurances to help stabilize the company.
How ironic that Julian's department was the source of the leaked documents. She did not have evidence. Just her instinct.
And she was pushed out by the board despite her instincts. Hands trembling, she slid into her chair and opened the envelope Adrian had handed her.
The conditions of the proposed marriage were laid out in clear white pages inside. A business agreement not a love affair. absence of a physical connection.
No emotional entanglements. Making public appearances together. They would split up assets intact after the one-year contract expired.
Adrian Drake. Billionaire. Brutal. Julian's most formidable rival. The man was now offering her a lifeline that suspiciously resembled a golden cage.
Sophia closed her eyes and reclined. Was this the price she had to pay to survive?
She went to see her father again later that night. He was hardly awake at all. In the hopes of a glimpse of reaction she kept a close eye on his face.
“I am aware of what people will say if I take this action. That I'm weak. That I gave up.”
The rain hammered the window more forcefully. However, it doesn't matter what they think. “All I want is to safeguard what you created. I'd like to fight. Even at the risk of somewhat losing myself.”
Squeezing his hand she sobbed. She let a tear fall down her cheek.
Leaving the hospital, she entered the waiting car.
When the driver arrived at the Drake mansion, it was almost midnight.
With its steel glass and frame the structure towered over the city like a fortress.
Wearing a black coat over her silk blouse, Sophia exited the vehicle. No makeup. Without a mask.
Tonight she had no desire to act fake. She rode to the top floor in the elevator. The remaining seconds before crossing the line were indicated by each ding.
Her pulse raced. A sleek dark hallway was revealed as the elevator doors slid open. Ahead, the penthouse door was waiting closed and imposing.
She lifted her fist and gave one knock. The door opened in an instant. Adrian Drake this time without a tie stood there.
He only had that same cool unreadable expression and a dark shirt. He appeared unsurprised.
“You're right on time,” he said.
Sophia blew out a breath. “I had trouble falling asleep.”
“ I couldn't either.” He moved out of the way. She entered.
The penthouse was opulent and peaceful. Each surface was polished. Each line is clear.
“Have you read the contract,” he asked.
“Yes “
“And?”
“I have my terms,” she said
Adrian cocked his head.
“You'll ensure that my father's name is cleared of all accusations,” she stated in a firm voice. “The whole scandal and lies of embezzling funds while he was a partner at your company.”
He nodded a little. “Then it's settled.”
Sophia drew in some air. “I will marry you.”
Adrian remained unfazed. “By morning I'll have the paperwork ready.”
She nodded. But the moment she agreed, something inside of her changed.
She felt as though she had signed away the last aspect of herself that was optimistic about happy endings.
This wasn't affection. Not even loyalty was involved. More like a business transaction.
She turned and gazed out at the city through the glass windows. The horizon was endless.
While lives continued in a thousand buildings with blinking lights, hers was stuck in a deal that was unthinkable just a year ago.
Adrian approached her and stood next to her his hands in his pockets.
Silently he stated. “ Once this goes public there's no turning back. I know people will hate you. They will watch every move you make.
Then she looked at him. “Alright. I am ready.”
For the first time since they first met he gave her a serious look at that moment. “You're not what I expected.”
“I get that a lot.”
For a few seconds, they stood silent.
Then Adrian went to the bar and got a drink for himself.
He lifted the glass toward her. “To us and a blissful marriage.”
She smirked. “You mean a successful business transaction because this doesn't feel like marriage.”
DesiresSophia dragged her gaze from his chiseled chest and hard abs. And her eyes landed on his face. His lips were stretched into a smile. He wasn't startled or upset. He looked down at her amusingly as though he had just caught a kitten in the milk jug.And that look was worse than anger, that knowing playful look. Her ribs were pounded by her heart. She grasped the white towel, that was wrapped around her body with a shaking hand and pulled it tighter like a shield. She looked everywhere but his face as she looked to the floor. Right then, she wished the earth would split open and engulf her.Her bare feet, felt cold on the tiled floor which contrasted sharply with the heat radiating up her neck and into her face. Two long, silent steps brought Adrian closer to her. He confined her by placing both hands on the wall above her head. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, and see the tiny beads of sweat trickling down his temples, from what must have been a workout because
Sneaking aroundThe constant buzz of the treadmill wound down, fading into a low hum before clicking to a stop. Silence filled the room after the noise.Adrian got down from the treadmill as he exhaled deeply.A single drop of sweat broke free from his temple. He felt its tiny parts as it trickled down the side of his face, over his jaw, and finally dropped with a soft pat onto the black rubber floor. His throat felt dry and so he looked around the well-equipped gym. And his gaze landed on a water bottle. With long strides, he walked to the bench. Then he wrapped his fingers around the plastic bottle and took off the cap. After that, he drank from it before placing it down. His gaze fell back to the treadmill's display. The numbers showed the miles he had run, the time he had spent.A familiar voice echoed in his head, like a demanding coach. Get back on. You have more energy left. Push for another mile. Don't stop. It was the same battle he fought every Saturday morning. A fight betw
The secret bathThat Saturday morning, the glow from Sophia's laptop screen filled the room. The first light of the day was starting to break forth from the darkness of the previous night. But to her, the day had begun hours earlier. She was working on her laptop with a practiced efficiency as she went through her emails. Although, the responses were businesslike but there was a hint of anxiety in each one.The previous few weeks had flown by. The days had passed in a blur of activities, a bewildering series of meetings, and signing various paperwork for some important properties that were up for lease.Every signature was a tiny act of surrender that felt heavy. Her father created this empire with the intention of building and selling dream homes and seeing families move into them. However, they were at a loss. They needed to boost their finances by renting out some of their father's properties, if they were to recover from the company's downturn. After a long, restless night spent s
Whispers in the darkAdrian sat with his back straight on the edge of his bed. He pinned Miss Florence with a glare that felt like ice. “What do you want? Be real quick.”There was no room for polite conversation in his low, icy voice.Florence winced but held her ground holding her hands in front of her. “As you are aware, Adrian, I detest being in the spotlight. I detest interviews but you made me go to that one today,” she said, her tone a mix of accusation and resentment.Adrian clenched his jaw and his eyes pierced through her. Her recent attitude is beginning to get on his nerves. He didn't want to cut ties with her. She has been more than a housekeeper to him over the years.Adrian leaned back against his bed's soft headboard. Slowly, he formed a barrier between them by folding his arms across his chest. “ You brought this on yourself,” he said in a firm flat voice.Florence's eyes glowed with real shock. She let her mouth fall open. Her voice rose as she protested. “ How? What
A wife's doubtThe front door clicked open and Sophia entered the huge mansion. She usually arrived home from work at a much earlier hour than this one.All she needed was a good sleep to ease the stress from today's activity at the company.Although, something still bugs her mind. She wasn't sure yet but she feels Adrian must have put Florence to it. How else do you explain Florence showing up on a TV show? The woman hates her and wouldn't want to do anything that would tilt to her favor except someone had pushed her into doing it.In the living room, she met Adrian on the couch with his laptop on his thigh. His face was a hard line of focus. But he glanced up from it the moment he felt her presence. They made eye contact just as he closed his laptop. “You're back? I wasn't expecting you to be home so early,” he said, and then flicked his wrist to check his wristwatch. She moved to a sofa and dropped down on it. “I finished on time.”“I see. How was your day at work? Made new enemies
Turning pointShe felt dizzy as her eyes were glued to the television screen. Blood roared in her ears and her face turned white in horror. The frantic beat of her heart made her shiver in fright. Just when she thought she was having a smooth sail, away from the problems of the past few days, another dreadful incident was about to occur.Right there on a TV show, Florence sat, displaying a confident look with a smile, facing the cameras like she had done it all her life.Under the harsh glaring studio lights, Miss Florence sat with grace. The beautiful female host exuded poise as she beamed a smile, directing her gaze at Miss Florence.“Miss Florence, it's a real pleasure to have you on the show,” the host said. “ The story that has developed over the past week, has captured the attention of the entire country. You said you wanted to make things clear. Kindly proceed.”That was it.The last straw that would destroy her reputation. At this point, she could do nothing to stop Miss Flore
