KAEL’S CONFESSION

As Beta Kael marched through the upper corridors of Ashwood Castle, his boots stroke the stone with a rhythm that was usually calming. Left, right. Order, discipline.

Today, however, the rhythm was off. It was less of a march and more of a stomp.

His mind was a battlefield, and the enemy was a kitchen maid with flour in her hair and a mouth sharper than his sword.

“Maybe I am hungry.”

Kael groaned aloud, rubbing a hand over his face. Why had he said that? It was unprofessional. It was chaotic. It was... suggestively vague.

He had spent thirty years of his life in the service of the pack. He had organized patrols, balanced budgets, and broken up bar fights. His romantic history was a short, efficient list of practical arrangements that ended when duty called. He treated women like he treated logistics: necessary, structured, and manageable.

Lyra was not manageable. She was a wildfire in an apron. And since he had almost kissed her twice, she had gone back to ignoring him with a dedicat

  • Vying For The Alpha's Heart   THE CAGE OF LIGHT

The "Purification Cage" was not made of iron. It was not made of steel. It was made of bamboo. To the untrained eye, it looked fragile, like a birdcage woven from pale, dried stalks. But the bamboo had been soaked in holy water and engraved with runes of containment. It stood in the exact center of the main courtyard, where the sun beat down without mercy, unobstructed by the castle walls. There was no roof or shade. There was only the light.Eltonia sat in the center of the small, circular cage. She was still wearing the grey wool of the penitent, which scratched her skin and trapped the heat like a furnace. Her hands were bound loosely in her lap.The sun was like a personal enemy. Her mouth was dry as dust.Servants passed by, averting their eyes. They had been forbidden to speak to the "witch." To offer water was a sin. To offer shade was heresy.Eltonia closed her eyes against the glare. The heat made her dizzy. The world spun, and the grey stones of the courtyard blurred into th

  • Vying For The Alpha's Heart   THE SIN OF LUST

The Great Hall was filling up for the second time that day. The summons had been absolute: Every soul in Ashwood. No exceptions. In the crowded corridor leading to the servants' entrance, Eltonia stood on her tiptoes, trying to see over the heads of the stable boys. She felt a sharp elbow in her ribs."Stop wiggling," Lyra hissed, though there was no real bite in her tone.Eltonia turned to her friend. Lyra was red. Her cheeks were a bright, suspicious shade of pink that had nothing to do with the heat of the ovens. She kept fidgeting with her apron strings, and her eyes kept darting toward the front of the hall, where the guards were assembling.Specifically, toward the Beta."You look... warm," Eltonia whispered as a small smile touched her lips for the first time in days."It's hot in here," Lyra snapped, fanning herself aggressively. "Too many bodies. Too much incense.""Is it?" Eltonia teased gently. "Or is it because Beta Kael is looking at you like he wants to eat you?"Lyra ch

  • Vying For The Alpha's Heart   THE SCULLERY ROMANCE

The secret tunnels beneath Ashwood Castle were older than the stones themselves. They smelled of damp earth, ancient secrets, and the terrified sweat of ancestors who had used them to flee sieges.Oreon moved through the darkness without a torch. He knew the way by touch, counting the stones on the left wall until he felt the rough timber of the hidden door.He pushed. The wood groaned, then swung open.Heat and steam blasted his face.He stepped out from behind a stack of barrels and into the scullery pantry. It was quiet. The main ovens were cooled for the night, leaving only the dim glow of the embers and a lantern hanging near the sink.He saw her.Eltonia was standing at the deep stone basin. She was scrubbing a massive cauldron that was nearly as big as she was. Her grey penitent’s dress was soaked at the front. Her hair was messy, escaping the twine she used to tie it back. She looked exhausted. She looked beaten down. But to Oreon, after hours of enduring Miya’s suffocating, p

  • Vying For The Alpha's Heart   THE TEMPTATION OF OREON

The invitation had been formal. A scroll sealed with white wax, delivered by a silent Paladin.Alpha Oreon. Your spiritual audit requires a private session. The topic is the Sacred Union. Come alone.Oreon stood outside the heavy doors of the Guest Wing, now the Sanctum. He adjusted his tunic. He felt like he was walking into a trap, but he couldn't refuse. Not with the threat of dethronement hanging over his head like a guillotine blade. He knocked."Enter," Miya’s voice floated through the wood.Oreon pushed the door open. The room had been transformed. The furniture were now floor cushions of white velvet. Hundreds of candles flickered on every surface, filling the room with a golden, hazy light. The air was thick with the smoke of jasmine and heavy musk, a scent that was less "temple" and more "boudoir."Miya stood in the center of the room.Oreon’s steps reduced. She was not wearing her stiff, ceremonial robes. She was wearing a gown of sheer, white silk that clung to her body li

  • Vying For The Alpha's Heart   THE MIDNIGHT MASS

The Great Hall was no longer a place of feasting. It was a freezing purgatory. It was two hours past midnight. The torches had been extinguished, save for a massive brazier burning white-hot behind the altar. The only sound was the droning, hypnotic voice of Lady Miya and the collective, suppressed whimpering of two hundred people kneeling on granite."Pain is the chisel," Miya intoned with her eyes closed and her hands raised to the ceiling. "It carves away the excess. It shapes the soul into a vessel for the Light."Finn stood beside her, his arms trembling as he swung a heavy censer of frankincense. The smoke was thick, acrid, and choking. His eyes were red and streaming, but he didn't dare stop. He swung. Clink-hiss. Clink-hiss.In the back row, huddled among the scullery maids, Lyra felt like her kneecaps were about to snap."If the Goddess wanted us to suffer this much," Lyra muttered under her breath, "she wouldn't have given us buttocks to sit on.""Shhh!" Matron Henga hissed
