The sun was coming up. Ximena’s phone buzzed again. She hadn’t slept much as her mind was full of last night’s memories. Carlos’s message that made her heart beat fast.

“We need to talk. It’s urgent.” That was all the message conveyed.

Ximena rubbed her tired eyes. She sat up and looked at the ceiling. She didn’t know if she was more tired or more scared. Her fingers stayed on the phone. Then she typed:

I’m coming down now.

When she got to the kitchen, Carlos was there. He was leaning on the counter. He didn’t look calm like usual. He looked serious. Ximena felt her stomach tighten.

“You look tired,” he said softly. It was not really a question.

Ximena shrugged and poured coffee. “I didn’t sleep well.”

Carlos nodded. Then he showed her a picture on his phone.

Ximena frowned. The picture was blurry. It showed a man across the street from her office. The man was not hiding. He stood still, watching.

“Do you know him?” she asked. Her heart beat fast.

Carlos shook his head. “No. But he ha

Ximena held her phone in her hand. Her fingers felt cold. She looked at the screen again. She read the short message one more time. It had only a few words, but it felt heavy inside her chest.Miguel sat next to her. He watched her closely. The room was tranquil. Outside, the wind pushed against the windows. The glass made a soft rattling sound.“What does it say?” Miguel asked. His voice was calm, but his eyes were not calm.Ximena swallowed hard. She did not want to speak the words. If she said them out loud, they would be real. She turned the phone toward him so he could see.Miguel read the message. His jaw became tight. He stayed still for a moment. Then he looked at her again. “Who sent this?”She hesitated. “I… I think it’s from Carlos. But I am not sure if it is really him.”Miguel frowned. “It is his number?”“Yes,” she whispered. “But something feels wrong.”Miguel reached for the phone. She gave it to him. He reread the message, slower this time. “Meet me. Alone. Midnight.

The morning light came into Ximena’s room. It was soft and quiet. She sat by the window, holding a cup of hot coffee. The coffee was dark and strong. It warmed her cold hands. Outside, the city was waking up slowly. Cars moved on the streets. People walked to work. But inside Ximena, her heart was not calm. It was full of many feelings. She felt nervous and scared. She also felt a little hope. But she did not understand that hope yet.She thought about last night. She thought about Miguel. They had talked. They had not shouted or fought. They had talked like two people who needed each other. Like two people who had to be together, even if they did not want to be. It was strange and new. But it felt real.Ximena’s phone buzzed on the table. She looked at it. It was a message from Carlos, Miguel’s assistant. She answered the call quickly. “Hello, Carlos.”“Good morning,” Carlos said. His voice was serious. “We are observing your office. The men we saw near your building are still there.

Ximena stood by the window in her apartment. She looked out at the city lights. The sound of cars driving far away made her feel a little less alone. The world outside kept moving. But inside, she felt stuck. Her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. She looked down. It was Carlos. She opened his message.“Miguel just arrived at the mansion. Engagement starts in an hour.”I'mThe message was short. No feelings. Just facts.Ximena put the phone down slowly. The word “engagement” hit her hard. Miguel. Her ex-husband. The man who had kept her tied to a cold, empty marriage for three years. And now, he promised to marry Tania Roberto—the woman who had caused her so much pain. She breathed out slowly. It wasn’t just the ceremony she was scared of. It was everything that came with it—the fake smiles, the gossip, the silent fights hidden behind fancy glasses.Ximena walked to the mirror. She looked at herself carefully. Her blonde hair was tied back loosely. A few strands hung down softly. He

CHAPTER 103The Antonio penthouse was quiet,Ximena stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, one hand resting lightly on the glass, the other holding a half-full wine glass. She hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the look on Miguel’s face at the gallery. That quiet pain behind his words. The way he’d said, “I see it now.”You always had good timing, Miguel. It's always too late.A soft knock echoed through the space.Ximena turned slowly, half-expecting Rafael, but it was Renata—the penthouse concierge—peeking in with an apologetic expression.“Ma’am, I know you don’t like unannounced guests, but... there’s a woman downstairs. She says she’s your cousin. From Scent City?”Ximena blinked. “Cousin?”“She’s... persistent.”Her brows furrowed, trying to remember who it could be. She hadn’t spoken to anyone from the orphanage in years. Most of the girls she'd grown up with had scattered after eighteen. Some were unreachable.Still, curiosity won.“Send her up.”The elevator doors slid o

Ximena stood at her table the next morning, brushing her hair slowly. She had barely slept the night before. Too many thoughts clouded her head. The mirror reflected a woman who didn’t look tired, even if she felt it. She had long ago learned to carry exhaustion like perfume—always present but never obvious. Her phone buzzed again on the nightstand. She glanced at it, saw the name.Miguel.Second message in twelve hours. This one read:“Can we talk? I won’t take much of your time.”She locked the screen without replying. There were boundaries now.And Miguel had to learn to live with them—just like she had learned to live without him.Downstairs, Rafael was already in the living room, dressed casually for a weekend strategy meeting.“You didn’t sleep again,” he said without looking up from his tablet.“I did,” she lied.Rafael snorted. “Right. And I’m dating Enrique Iglesias.”She raised an eyebrow, amused despite herself. “He’s not your type.”“No,” Rafael said dramatically. “He’s ev
