Dante

Melanie remained standing in the corner of my private room like she had every fucking right to be there.

Her eyes went wide but that look only lasted for a second. She regained herself instantly, running past me.

Big mistake.

I yanked my shirt from the chair, barely bothering to slip it on as I went after her. My steps weren’t rushed. I didn’t have to sprint because I didn’t need to. She wasn’t getting far.

She took a sharp turn down the hall, but I caught her before she hit the corner, my hand locking around her arm like iron.

“Going somewhere, sweetheart?” My voice was low, the kind of low that made people stop breathing.

She jerked against my grip. “Let me go.”

“Not a chance.” I stepped into her space, forcing her to look up at me. “No one walks into my private room, and escapes.”

Her chin tipped up. “It was a mistake… I was looking for...”

“Bullshit,” I said flatly. “You were snooping.”

“I wasn’t—”

“Don’t,” I cut her off, tightening my hold just enough to make

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 30

Dante I left the hospital room feeling like a blade had been sliced through my chest. Seeing Melanie alive, after everything? had a weird effect on me. Not because I cared about her but because I wanted her dead. If Bianca’s stunt hadn’t gone south, things would’ve been a hell of a lot easier. But now? Everything was on me. And the thought of that felt like a damn chore and trust me, killing was never a chore. What made it feel that way was the delegation—the endless planning, tying up loose ends, and making sure the right people stayed quiet, Melanie could just have died. Why did she always have to make things difficult? My thoughts when silenced when I stepped into the corridor. Federico stormed in at that moment nearly colliding with me. The bastard stopped dead in his tracks, gripping me by the arm like we were buddies from high school. “Dante,” he said coldly. “You’d better keep Bianca on a leash. Because the next time she pulls a stunt like this…” He leaned in, his b

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 29

Melanie Screams tore through the dining room. They were loud, sharp, panicked but the only ones I heard clearly were my mother’s. Her voice was the anchor in the chaos, trembling and breaking as she called my name.My hands flew to my chest instinctively,as the strange feeling blossomed. I felt something warm . Wet. Sticky. It was Blood. For a ridiculous half-second, my brain short-circuited. ‘Wait… is that mine?’ I blinked at the crimson pooling between my fingers. ‘Oh yeah, genius. It’s totally yours. Congratulations, Melanie, you’ve officially been shot.’Pain bloomed late, like it had politely waited for me to process the obvious. Then it came tearing through me like fire laced with shards of glass. My head spun. My vision warped. My thoughts scattered like confetti in a hurricane. My mother’s arms wrapped around me, pulling me against her trembling frame. “Stay with me, baby! Just stay with me!”Like I’m going somewhere? My mouth didn’t say it, but my brain was still stupidl

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 28

Melanie Why did I have to get drunk? Why did I have to put myself in this situation? God! I wish I could disappear right now. The knock continued; getting louder and more frantic by the second. I held my breath… waiting for the knock to stop; for him to go away but it didn’t and when I was about to consider jumping out of the window to save myself I heard the sound of a familiar voice. “Leonardo!” It was my Mom’s voice. “What are you doing?” My heart, which had been hammering like a war drum, began to slow down a bit. The fact that it wasn’t Dante brought about relief. “Oh God!” I heard Leonardo exclaim. “The last thing I wanted was for you to catch me out here. But since you did…I actually wanted to speak to Melanie, and apologize to her.” I moved closer to the door. I didn’t open it right away, instead I kept eavesdropping on their conversation. “For what?” My mom asked and I heard Leonardo laugh. It was loud, bitter and it seemed like it wouldn’t end anytime soon. “I wa

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 27

Melanie My eyes flickered open, squinting against the faint light spilling through the curtains. For a second, I didn’t know where the hell I was. My head throbbed, my mouth felt like I’d swallowed cotton, and my thoughts were a blur. Then I sat up…well, tried to and it was at that moment I realized I couldn’t move. I looked down and I noticed a thick rope tied around my wrists. “Oh, fantastic,” I muttered under my breath. “I was kidnapped. How Classy.” I peeled my eyes away and looked around the room, trying to figure out how I got here. My eyes widened when I spotted the familiar red walls, the sleek metal fixtures, and the faint smell of leather and… God, was that candle wax? Oh no. I was in the Red Room. Dante’s Red Room. “How did I end up here?” I mumbled, tugging at the rope. Images started coming back to me in pieces. I remembered talking to Juan on the terrace… his voice was calm, his words heavy with something he wasn’t saying. Then Dante came and carried me away.

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 26

Dante “We didn’t find it.” Milan or whatever her name was voice trembled as she delivered the news, but I barely heard her beyond the roaring in my ears. Melanie’s phone was still missing. The one thing that held the evidence capable of burning my plans to the ground. I forced myself to stand still, expression unreadable, even as a storm brewed inside me. Rage clawed at my chest, begging to break free, but I shoved it down. I couldn’t afford to lose control in front of a staff. “Leave,” I said quietly, my tone cutting sharper than any shout could. She scrambled away like a frightened animal, and I turned, making my way back to where Melanie was waiting. When I got there, her eyes flicked up. They had this mocking effect and that short circuited my brain. “Did you find it?” I didn’t answer right away. Instead, I walked closer, each step measured. She tilted her head, smiling faintly. “Judging by your face… I’ll take that as a no.” That smirk… I wanted to wipe it clean off

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 25

Dante The path to the mansion wasn’t properly lit, shadows stretched like claws across the walls. I felt invincible in the darkness as I adjusted my hand which was locked firmly around Melanie’s waist as I walked. She was quiet and I guess my little threat earlier had shaken her just a bit. When we got to the path that led to the red room, I placed her down. She stumbled, protesting with muffled words, but I ignored her, dragging her forward until we reached a secluded corner. Only then did I completely free her from my grip. I took in her features, noticing her eyes were glassy, her cheeks were flushed. The faint scent of alcohol engulfed the air as her lips parted a bit. My jaw tightened. She was drunk. No wonder she’d been hanging around that idiot Juan, giggling like she had nothing to lose. I stepped closer, my voice dropping lower as I spoke. “I’m sure you know why you’re here.” Her lips curled into a smile. “I guess it’s because you just wanted me close, Dante.” I
