Melanie

Juan’s eyes darted around like he was making sure no one was listening before he finally said, “Dante is trying to kill you.”

I blinked at him. I expected a lot of things out of Juan’s mouth, but that line? That was very unexpected.

My lips parted. “Excuse me?”

“Dante wants to kill you,” he repeated like I didn’t hear him the first time.

“I know that he wants to kill mw Juan. I’m just wondering how you knew about this?”

Juan jerked back like I’d slapped him. “You know?”

I nodded and Juan looked at me like I had lost my damn mind.

“Shit. he’s already threatened you, hasn’t he?” Juan’s eyes narrowed. “I should’ve known he’d pull that move.”

“How long has the threats been going on?” He asked.

“That’s not what matters now. What matters is how you know Juan?”

He drew in a slow breath, eyes flicking away for a moment before locking back on mine. “Because I’ve seen it before. The way he hovers around you, the way he controls you. it’s the same damn pattern he showed in the past.”

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 48

DanteGuilt. That fucking emotion I thought I’d buried a long time ago clawed its way back into me tonight. Walking out of Melanie’s room, leaving her there with that soft look in her eyes, I felt it settle heavy in my chest. It was like a goddamn anchor dragging me down.If I hadn’t let my anger take over, I wouldn’t have driven so fast and knocked us both into a ditch. I was back to thinking of the what ifs. What if things went worse and she got hurt.Fuck! I was caring about her.Melanie was once again reminding me I wasn’t this cold bastard I’d built myself into. But the feeling of guilt didn’t last like everything else, guilt was fleeting. By the time I reached my room I was swallowing up the usual feeling I was familiar with—self-loathing. I was back to regretting my actions. Back to reminding myself that I wasn’t built to feel. I wasn’t supposed to feel. But I knew this was way out myControl now because every time I touched her, every time her fucking lips parted aro

Melanie“I can’t believe you hurt yourself again,” my mom said, staring straight at me as if I’d committed a crime. She sat on the edge of my bed with a neat little first aid kit open beside her, needle and thread ready. The kind of look she gave me made me feel like I’d just stolen the crown jewels instead of falling into a ditch with a psycho on a motorcycle.“I didn’t hurt myself,” I muttered, gritting my teeth as the needle pricked my skin. “Things happen, Mom. It’s not my fault I attract injuries every time I step out of this house.”“Things happen?” she repeated, shaking her head as though she couldn’t believe I was her daughter. “Melanie, this is not normal.”“Tell me about it,” I mumbled under my breath, my eyes flicking toward the ceiling. Normal. If only she knew what ‘not normal’ really looked like. Like having Dante hovering over me like some devil-shaped guardian angel who wanted to kill me and protect me at the same time. When she was done stitching, she sighed as if she

Melanie“You didn’t have to save me, you know,” I said as we walked out of the party. My pulse was still drumming from the chaos m that had happened , from the way Dante had smashed his fists into that guy’s face like he was trying to erase him from existence. We were close to his bike now, the metallic beast gleaming under the faint streetlights. He swung one leg over it effortlessly, like the damn machine was part of him. I stood there with my arms crossed.“Hop on,”“I’m not doing that,” I added firmly, lifting my chin. “You’re not going to ignore me and expect me to obey your orders all the time. I’m going back to my friends,”Dante didn’t even flinch. He just stared at me with those unreadable eyes. “The same friends that couldn’t take care of you?” he asked flatly. That hit like a slap. My lips parted, but nothing came out. He had a point—I hated that he had a point.“Yeah. I thought so too.” His mouth twitched into the smallest, coldest smirk. Then he tilted his head toward th

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 45

MelanieGetting ready for the party felt like an Olympic event. Dresses everywhere, shoes kicked across the room, me staring into the mirror like what the hell am I even doing? At some point; I thought of ditching the party but I managed to remind myself how badly I needed to go out. I slipped into a short black dress—tight enough to scream confidence but modest enough that my mother wouldn’t have a heart attack if she saw me. When I opened the door and stepped into the hall, Dante was right there, leaning against the wall like he owned the oxygen in the house. His eyes traveled from my head down to my legs. I swear the air changed.I clutched my purse tighter. I wanted him to say something. Anything. A grunt. An insult. Even one of your famous fuck-offs would do.But nope. He didn’t say a damn word. Just that unreadable look. It pissed me off more than I wanted to admit.“Evening,” I muttered, walking past him like my heart wasn’t slamming against my ribs.Halfway down the corridor

  • WANTING MY STEP—BROTHER    Chapter 44

MelanieA few days slipped by, and honestly, the wildest thing wasn’t anything I did. It was Dante. He had suddenly unlocked a new character development arc.Dante had kept his distance. And by distance, I don’t mean he stayed away…God forbid the universe gave me that peace. No, he was still there. Lurking. Watching. Breathing the same damn air as me. He just… didn’t speak to me. Not a word. Not even one of his soul-piercing, spine-tingling insults. It was like something had shifted since the spa incident. He was colder, sharper. And, not that I cared really, I didn’t but the silence felt louder than his usual roughness.I told myself it was better this way. If Dante didn’t speak, I wouldn’t say anything that would get me in trouble. If Dante didn’t speak, I wouldn’t end up pinned against walls with my robe hanging halfway off. Simple math. Peaceful math. Except… Why the hell did I hate it? Why did I catch myself wanting him to just bark at me, or smirk, or something? Ugh. Stupid bra
