DAMIEN’S POV

They discussed some more, talking about other things. But I’ve heard everything I

needed to. It was funny, their plan to ruin me was cute. They just don’t know

what they’re up against. I got to my feet, leaving the restaurant.

I called up Hilda as I returned to the office. “Clear out the rest of my schedule for

today. I have something important I have to deal with.”

“Wife trouble?”

I rolled my eyes. “No, Hilda. Just clear it.”

“Okay, sure thing.”

Now, on to the next step in my plan. I scrolled through my contact list as I drove

out of the office, stopping on one of my fixer’s numbers. He was the best in the city,

and just the guy for the job at hand. I dialed him and he picked up at the third ring.

“To what do I owe this pleasure of speaking with the unstoppable Damien Vance?”

He said, and I could hear the smile in his tone.

Dexter ‘Dex’ Harper was a good friend of mine and my partner back when I was into

underground street fights. He fought for the money and the thrill of it. I fought

because I was bored and needed to piss off my no-good father. Together, we were

unstoppable. Sure, we made enemies along the way, but it was nothing a good fight

wouldn’t fix. The women, the drugs, and the high were great too, just a side attraction.

It was only after Lucas died that I left that world. I cleaned myself up, took over my

father’s company, and built it up to what it is today. But we still kept in touch. And

he handled whatever little issue I had along the way.

“I need some information about somebody. Anything you can find. The dirtier, the

better,” I said. “I already sent you a picture of the guy. Get back to me as soon as

possible.”

“Got it, give me thirty minutes tops.”

“Meet you at the White Lotus?”

He laughed. “You’ve made that place our hangout spot. But okay, see you in thirty

minutes.”

He walked into the White Lotus an hour later, taking a seat opposite me. “Sorry I

Kept you waiting, the traffic was horrible,” he apologized.

“By traffic, you mean a certain blonde,” I said, my eyebrows raised. He let out a

hearty laugh.

“Oops. It’s not my fault you refused to get married,” he replied, grabbing a manila

file and placing it on the table, deliberately flashing me his ring. He got married

three years ago and has been rubbing it in my face that I refused to get off the

market.

“Point of correction, I am married.”

“By contract.”

“Fuck off.”

He chuckled before getting serious. “But seriously though, this guy is fucked. I

Didn’t get all the Intel I needed on time, that’s why I was late.”

“So what do you have for me?

“The name’s Robert. He’s your guy’s best friend and partner in crime. Like, quite

literally. For the past 6 years, he’s been in and out of jail on multiple charges of

murder, sexual assault, and lobbying. You name it, he’s done it.”

“What else?”

“He’s been Carter Cosmetics' lobbyist for years and Adrian’s fixer, but not the good

kind. Remember your informant eight months ago?” he asked.

I nodded.

“Well, he did it. And what’s even worse is that he’s been helping Adrian cook the

books for Carter Cosmetics for years, stealing and embezzling money from his

wife’s nose to several offshore and crypto accounts all across the world.”

That was fucked up.

“Why do you need his Intel, by the way?” Dex suddenly asked.

“They’re coming after me. But they don’t know that I know about their plan. I saw

Adrian was talking to this guy at the restaurant I was at earlier. When I listened in, I

found out that they were planning on coming after me and taking the company,

splitting it too.”

Dex laughed, just like I did, as though what I told him was the most absurd thing

he’d ever heard. “That’s funny.”

“Exactly what I thought.”

“What do you wanna do?” he asked.

“I think it’s time we did this the best way, underground street fighter style.”

He smirked cockily, excitement showing on his face. “Oh, it’s on. Let’s get down to

business, then.”

“Tell the boys to get ready. We meet by the creek by 10,” I stated, getting up.

“You got it, boss.”

Hours later, I sat waiting as the boys dragged Robert towards me. He had been

stealthily kidnapped and adequately tortured enough to make him go insane,

confessing whatever came to mind. They had just finished giving him another

round of torture before throwing him in front of me, by my feet. With fear in his

eyes, he rushed to grab my leg, pleading.

“Please save me, let me go. I promise, I’ll tell you anything you want to know.

Everything I know,” he cried, exasperated.

“I thought you were the best fixer in town. Look how jittery and weak you look. Tell

me, with an accolade of killing my informant months ago, how do you want to get

dirt on me and take my empire, now that you look worse for wear?” I taunted.

He blanched, his mouth wide open in fear, so much so that it was almost laughable.

“You killed Lucia Garner because she knew who my brother’s killer was. You tried

to cover up for them, didn’t you?” I smiled sweetly, although the situation was

anything but.

“Please don’t kill me, I’ll tell you who they are. I’ll tell you everything.”

I chuckled, pulling out my Glock. “No need, I already know who they are,” I said, my

eyes menacing as I pulled the trigger.

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   SHOPPING

ELENA’S POVWe approached the Dior store, where a small group of staff were already waiting for us outside. “Welcome, Mr Vance, Miss Celine. We’re honored to have you,” the store manager greeted, bowing with the rest of the staff as they led us in. I looked behind me, watching as they all moved about like clockwork, one turning over the open sign over and locking the store, others going to different areas in the store to bring out several collections of outfits. Like they were expecting us.Like, Damien had bought the whole store for today. He sure is speaking the language of money. Maybe I should make good use of it and shop to my heart’s content. After the third hour, I looked ready to die. Die from trying out so many dresses. I huffed as the staff got me out of yet another gown and shoved another into the changing room where I was. I was ready to break down in tears if I tried one more gown, or one more jewelry to pair with it, who knew a day would come when shopping could bore m

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   BOLTING

ELENA’S POVI blinked, confused. What was he saying? What was he implying with his words? What the hell am I hearing as soon as I wake up? He was staring deep into my eyes, even as he said those words. It must have been my imagination, but I could see the raw emotions expressly written in the hazel glow of his eyes as the rays of the sun rested on them. It was safe to say, in spite of my fear, I was drawn in, shaken to my core. But was I hallucinating? Imagining this feeling? My chest tightened, and each breath burn into my lungs. What was this feeling, if I could say I was imagining it all. I blinked again, still in a maze from his words, like I could blink away the many emotions running through me. I could feel it now, the longer we sat silently, staring at each other. A wave of tension brushed against my skin, evoking a prickling sensation that ran down my spine. The silence, I could say, was thick and heavy, the type that didn’t need words to say everything it needed to. I shi

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   HANGOVER

ELENA’S POVI could hear loud voices and arguments. We were in a club and I blinked wondering how I ended up here. But I ran towards the sound, rushing in quickly to find out what was wrong. I saw Charlotte and Adrian on one side of the room. Adrian was shielding my sister with his hands with a look of disdain in his eyes toward the other person in the room. “HEY!” I shrieked and the three pairs of eyes turned to face me. “What are you doing?” I questioned the intruder. “He’s just a stalker,” Charlotte was quick to speak. The new person cursed loudly. “What the fuck? You’re calling me a stalker. You’ve been such a bitch the last couple of days. You think I won’t tell her?” he threatened and Charlotte’s eyes grew wide. Even Adrian’s expression darkened. “Leave here, now,” she commanded, finally bold enough to throw jacket guy out. When he won’t budge, she screamed, grabbing a bottle and smashed it against the table. Jacket guy’s expression changed to shock and he backed away. I st

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   NIGHTEBIRD

DAMIEN’S POVI drove like a madman, around the New York traffic towards the location her phone pinged on my screen. It was late and I wondered why when I returned she wasn’t home, and till now, she was yet to return. The red dot that indicated her location was moving fast and I worried that she might be in grave danger. Or worse, she’d run away. No, she wouldn’t do that. Do you trust her that much? Did I? I thought as I drove to her. “Alfred,” I called when I returned from work to find her bedroom empty and the whole house devoid of her voice. He appeared before me almost immediately. “Where is Elena?” I asked, confusion creasing my features. He looked equally as flustered as I was confused. “Uhh,” he began to stutter. “She had said she wanted to go shopping when I informed her of the black card you’d left her, she asked for a ride and I let her have the key to one of your cars, Mr Vance.” “What time did she leave?” I asked. “She left at around 3 pm,” he affirmed and I frowned

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   DRUGGED

ELENA’S POVThe walls felt like they were closing in on me, the disco lights feeling larger and weirdly nearer than usual. I turned around, trying to get a good look of my surroundings, but it seemed warped and hazy. I felt a hand snake around my hips and moved to flinch, but maybe my reflexes was too slow or the hand was too fast, but it stayed. I needed air, I was suffocating. I heard a voice say something, it sounded like the guy from earlier, although I couldn’t make out what he was saying. “You wanna get out of here?,” I read the movement of his lips, or the three I could see saying the same thing. I giggled cutely, clearly inebriated and all I could do was hum absent-mindedly. Suddenly the arm held me tighter, feeling me up, the man’s voice closer and louder, yet still incoherent. I was starting to feeling nauseated by the feeling. That was when it hit me and I could tell, this guy just drugged me. That could only mean one thing. I have to get out of here, away from thi

  • WOUNDS OF DECEIT   BEST TROPHY WIFE

ELENA’S POV I turned from him, my food lay cold and forgotten as I made to leave the room, when I stopped abruptly.“Here’s what will happen. I’ll be the best trophy wife out there. I will not work more than I have to. I will not go to work tomorrow, and when I do resume office, I will not be filing paperwork for you. I’d rather sit with Hilda instead. I will look good for the camera, and you will not, till our contract is through, until I allow it, so much as move an inch near me. Am I clear?” I didn’t want for him to respond but I left him. I sighed when I returned upstairs to my room. I didn’t realize that with Damien Vance, things could escalate from a zero to a hundred real quick. But it was possible and it happened. And now that what went down had happened, I could relax. And almost immediately, all the nerves I had not realized I had, with all the adrenaline rushing through my veins, all came rushing in full force. I collapsed on my bed. I couldn’t believe I had the streng
