Chapter 2

Author: Counting Stars
I hung up without saying a word.

Was I really the one ruining everyone's fun?

Charles and I had planned to fly overseas for our engagement photo shoot.

I was so excited that I could barely sleep. For three months, I worked late almost every night to finish my project ahead of schedule so I could take the time off.

My message thread with the photography team alone was long enough to fill a book.

Just before we boarded the plane, Bethany called because she couldn't solve a practice problem. She had countless other ways to get help, but Charles still dropped everything and left.

We rarely had the chance to travel alone, and there I was, stranded at the airport with two large suitcases.

Out of 365 days a year, he spent 358 of them wrapped up in Bethany's life because they were tutoring Eva.

Even the seven days he had promised me were taken away.

I stayed at the airport until that evening, apologizing over and over to the furious photographers and the coworkers whose schedules I had rearranged.

By the time I finally sent everyone home, my face hurt from forcing a smile. Between cancellation penalties, travel expenses, and lost income, I was out thousands of dollars.

I never wanted to experience that kind of humiliation again.

Without hesitating, I called the remaining wedding vendors and the hotel.

"Please cancel everything."

There was a lot involved in calling off a wedding. Fortunately, I had planned every detail myself, so dismantling it all didn't take long.

Two days later, Bethany posted an update on Instagram from an account called BethLovesChips.

[Just two thirty-somethings trying to survive a day of babysitting!]

She even tagged Charles's old account, Chip, in the post.

Chip had been his nickname since high school, which made her username read like some kind of public confession.

Charles claimed he had forgotten the password to that account after they broke up, so he could no longer log in and change the username.

Bethany followed me using that account as soon as Charles and I started dating. She began posting carefully staged photos designed to get under my skin.

A carefully cropped glimpse of Charles's forearm. His back as he tilted his head up to drink…

I knew Eva was with them, but the posts still made my stomach twist.

This time, Bethany went even further and posted a clear picture of herself with Charles.

The post included a short video of them losing a game and getting drenched with water as punishment.

The moment the water hit, Bethany screamed and threw her arms around Charles. She pressed herself against him, leaving no space between them.

Charles didn't push her away. Instead, he turned his back to the camera, shielding her soaked clothes from view.

Whenever he was with me, he never wanted to play games. Even at a simple balloon-shooting booth at a carnival, he would start lecturing me about probability.

"Assuming the balloons are evenly spaced, and each shot has a thirty percent chance of hitting one, the odds of making five shots in a row and winning the prize are less than half a percent. Instead of wasting time on this, you could help me find more study materials for Eva."

But in the video, Charles was smiling more brightly than I had ever seen him smile with me.

Apparently, spending time with Bethany was never a waste.

In the background, Eva shouted dramatically, "Beauty and the Geek, just get back together already!"

Ever since Eva's interview went viral, people online had been trying to identify the two tutors behind the state's top SAT score.

They eventually found Bethany's account, and the comments immediately filled with people rooting for her and Charles to get back together.

Bethany never responded. She simply liked every comment saying they belonged together.

Just then, the front door lock beeped. Charles walked in, rolling his suitcase behind him, his skin noticeably tanned from the trip.

After dropping his bags by the door, he came straight over and buried his face in the crook of my neck.

"Did you miss me?"

The smell of perfume clinging to him made me pull away. It was the same heavy, overpowering fragrance Bethany always wore.

Nausea rose in my throat.

Every time he came home after spending time at Bethany's house, he smelled like her perfume.

When I pulled away, Charles gave a soft laugh.

"What's wrong? Are you upset because you didn't get to see me for a few days?"

He reached into his suitcase and pulled out a small silver ornament.

"I brought you something. Beth picked it out as a wedding gift."

He handed it to me with a faint smile.

"She said doves mate for life and represent lasting love. See? You've had her wrong this whole time."

I turned the ornament over in my hand. Two doves had been engraved across the silver surface, flying in opposite directions.

A humorless laugh escaped me. "Did you even look at this?"

He frowned. "What do you mean?"

I held it up between us.

"These birds aren't flying together. They're flying away from each other. This isn't a symbol of lasting love. It looks more like a breakup gift."

Charles's twisted logic almost made me laugh."Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Do you really not understand why I left? Where were you all those times I needed you most?"Charles took a step back, his lips parting as he struggled to answer."I... I admit there were times when I didn't keep enough distance from Beth. But I swear I never cheated on you. I would never do anything to betray you!"I gave him a bitter smile."Betrayal doesn't begin only when things turn physical. Can you admit that every time you stayed silent and let her cross the line, you encouraged her? You made her think she could humiliate me right in front of you and get away with it."Countless memories flashed through my mind.I had lost track of how many nights I had lain awake, staring at a phone he never answered. Meanwhile, he was at Bethany's house, having what he called academic discussions with her. They talked about philosophy and history, subjects I knew little about. Charles had neve

During my first week in Ardenfall, I found a part-time job at a flower shop.Unlike Langford, the weather was mild, and life moved at a slower pace.Working among the flowers, surrounded by their soft fragrance, I finally felt the tension I had carried for so long begin to ease. The only downside was that people kept asking about the wedding.Even after I changed my number, concerned friends and former coworkers still found ways to contact me.No matter who asked, I gave them the same answer.[We realized we weren't right for each other, so we ended things. Thanks for checking in.]Most of them responded with sympathy. They all seemed to think Charles was such a great catch that I would never find anyone else like him. They didn't know the whole story, and I had no interest in explaining it.Besides, living alone was far more peaceful than my life with him had ever been.Only a week had passed, but everything that had happened in Langford already felt like another lifetime.

With his wedding to Julia only days away, Charles had drunk far more than he intended. By then, he had completely lost track of what he was saying or doing. Then something warm brushed against his leg.He looked up in confusion and met Bethany's unfocused gaze.It wasn't as though Charles had been unaware of her feelings for him. Whenever they tutored Eva together, he had always made a point of keeping his distance. The only time he had let his guard down was during their recent trip, when they lost a game at one of the attractions and were assigned a couples' challenge as a penalty. With Eva egging everyone on, the staff assumed Charles and Bethany were together and positioned them side by side before either of them could correct the misunderstanding. When a bucket of water was dumped over them, Charles instinctively stepped in front of Bethany to shield her soaked dress from the crowd.Other than that, nothing inappropriate had ever happened between them. The moment Charles f

Eva's voice was frantic. "Ch-Charles, Beth's drunk, and she's trying to leave with some guy. I don't know who he is, and I'm scared something might happen to her. Can you come?"For years, Eva had acted as though Charles was still the first person Bethany should turn to whenever something went wrong. He had always let it slide, partly because Eva was younger and partly because helping had once seemed harmless. Now, though, the assumption grated on him."Eva, Beth isn't my responsibility anymore."But Eva was crying too hard to even process what he said.Charles was already on edge, and the sound of her sobbing made him want to hang up.Still, he had watched Eva grow up and thought of her as a younger sister. Worried that she might be in trouble too, he went anyway. The moment he stepped into the private lounge, confetti cannons exploded in his face."Surprise!"His friends burst into cheers.Bethany was sitting safely in the middle of the couch with one arm around Eva. The man on the other end let out an impatient laugh."Come on, man. Your number is in the sales contract. How could I have the wrong number? The seller gave it to me and told me to call when I was ready to move in."He gave Julia's name and described the house in exact detail. The longer Charles listened, the less sense any of it made. How could Julia sell the house without even discussing it with him? Was this another one of her attempts to make a point? It was unbelievably childish. He forced himself to keep his temper under control."I'm sorry, but the house is no longer for sale. Whatever you paid, I'll pay you double."After ending the call, Charles immediately dialed Julia's number. A recorded message informed him that the number had been disconnected. He rubbed the space between his eyebrows and forced himself to stay calm, and then sent her a message.[Can you please grow up and stop this?]A single gray check mark appeared beside the message. It had been sent, but no

Charles stiffened. He was already furious that Julia had been ignoring him, and being yelled at for no apparent reason only made his temper spike."I didn't cancel the wedding. What the hell are you talking about?"The man on the other end gave a disbelieving laugh."How are you the last person to know your own wedding was canceled? Call the venue yourself if you don't believe me. They said the reception's off. Don't tell me Julia dragged you through all this when she never planned to marry you in the first place."Charles had no idea what was going on, but he was still clearheaded enough to snap, "Shut the hell up if you don't know what you're talking about! Who are you to accuse Julia of something like that?"He ended the call, got out of bed, and opened the closet, still refusing to believe it.He vaguely remembered Julia bringing home the suit she had ordered for him, but he had been too busy tutoring Eva to even try it on.Now, the closet was empty. Before he could make s
