Chapter 3

作者: Counting Stars
Charles frowned.

"It's just a gift. Do you really have to read that much into it? Beth was trying to be nice. Her intentions matter more than what direction the birds are facing."

Charles had always been stubborn and overly literal. Back in high school, he once argued so relentlessly during a debate tournament that his opponent ended up in tears.

Now, with the evidence right in front of him, he still accused me of reading too much into it just so he could defend Bethany.

This wasn't the first time.

Before Eva took the SAT, her school held a fall bonfire for seniors and their families.

Everyone was writing down their hopes for the future and tossing the notes into the flames. Bethany decided that wasn't meaningful enough. She pulled the bracelet off Charles's wrist and threw it into the fire, claiming that a wish only counted if you were willing to sacrifice something you loved.

It was one of the matching bracelets Charles and I had bought on our first anniversary.

We had picked them out at a small jewelry store during a trip to a ski town. On our way home that same day, an avalanche swept across the road and buried us beneath the snow.

Charles was dangerously close to hypothermia, but he kept me pressed against his chest and shielded me with his body.

By the time rescuers reached us, he was barely conscious, yet he was still whispering that he loved me.

After that, the bracelet that had survived the avalanche with us felt like a part of me.

Whenever Charles and I fought, the bracelet seemed to burn against my wrist. It always took me back to that winter and reminded me of everything good he had once done for me.

I thought it meant just as much to him. And yet, he dismissed it as though it had never mattered.

"It was just a cheap bracelet. Beth was just trying to make her wish count. I'll replace it with something better. There's no reason to turn this into a whole thing."

This time, I didn't even have the energy to argue.

"I think we should break…"

Before I could finish, his phone rang. He answered it and walked toward the balcony.

Eva's excited voice carried through the quiet room.

"Charles, where are you? Why aren't you here yet? Just between us, Beth looks really hot tonight. If you don't hurry, some guy's gonna swoop in!"

Charles glanced at me instinctively and frowned. "Cut it out."

But he was already reaching for his jacket and car keys.

"Beth planned a party to celebrate Eva's SAT score. She really wants me there." He paused before adding, "Don't make it into something it's not. A few of my friends will be there too. You know all of them."

But there was no way not to read into it.

Bethany had used Eva as an excuse to organize more get-togethers than I could count.

Whenever Eva raised her score on a practice test, earned the highest grade in a subject, or even got her wisdom teeth removed, Bethany found some reason to celebrate.

Charles hated socializing and always said it drained him. Whenever I asked him to have dinner with my friends or coworkers, he could never be bothered to come.

Yet he never missed one of Bethany's ridiculous parties.

I had always trusted him, so I chose to ignore it.

This time, I stopped him.

"I'm coming with you."

I wanted to see for myself why everyone was so obsessed with the idea of my fiancé and his ex getting back together.

I could treat it as the final chapter of our five-year relationship.

Charles froze, clearly surprised that I volunteered. But after our earlier argument, he didn't try to stop me.

When we arrived at the bar, Bethany and Eva were sitting in the middle of the group.

Bethany wore a backless burgundy dress. The moment she saw me, she greeted me as casually as if we were close friends.

"Oh, hey, Julia! Eva was just messing around earlier. Don't take her seriously. She made it sound like I'm still obsessed with Charles."

Charles led me to an open seat, then immediately started trading sarcastic remarks with Bethany.

A few minutes later, Eva suggested a game of Truth or Dare. She was young, outgoing, and good at getting people to go along with her, so everyone quickly agreed.

Bethany ended up with a dare. Her challenge was to answer two questions honestly.

Eva glanced at me, then flashed a mischievous grin.

"First question. What's your favorite thing about Charles?"

Bethany answered without hesitation, "The little crescent-shaped birthmark low on his left hip. It turns pink when you kiss him there long enough."

Charles's twisted logic almost made me laugh."Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Do you really not understand why I left? Where were you all those times I needed you most?"Charles took a step back, his lips parting as he struggled to answer."I... I admit there were times when I didn't keep enough distance from Beth. But I swear I never cheated on you. I would never do anything to betray you!"I gave him a bitter smile."Betrayal doesn't begin only when things turn physical. Can you admit that every time you stayed silent and let her cross the line, you encouraged her? You made her think she could humiliate me right in front of you and get away with it."Countless memories flashed through my mind.I had lost track of how many nights I had lain awake, staring at a phone he never answered. Meanwhile, he was at Bethany's house, having what he called academic discussions with her. They talked about philosophy and history, subjects I knew little about. Charles had neve

During my first week in Ardenfall, I found a part-time job at a flower shop.Unlike Langford, the weather was mild, and life moved at a slower pace.Working among the flowers, surrounded by their soft fragrance, I finally felt the tension I had carried for so long begin to ease. The only downside was that people kept asking about the wedding.Even after I changed my number, concerned friends and former coworkers still found ways to contact me.No matter who asked, I gave them the same answer.[We realized we weren't right for each other, so we ended things. Thanks for checking in.]Most of them responded with sympathy. They all seemed to think Charles was such a great catch that I would never find anyone else like him. They didn't know the whole story, and I had no interest in explaining it.Besides, living alone was far more peaceful than my life with him had ever been.Only a week had passed, but everything that had happened in Langford already felt like another lifetime.

With his wedding to Julia only days away, Charles had drunk far more than he intended. By then, he had completely lost track of what he was saying or doing. Then something warm brushed against his leg.He looked up in confusion and met Bethany's unfocused gaze.It wasn't as though Charles had been unaware of her feelings for him. Whenever they tutored Eva together, he had always made a point of keeping his distance. The only time he had let his guard down was during their recent trip, when they lost a game at one of the attractions and were assigned a couples' challenge as a penalty. With Eva egging everyone on, the staff assumed Charles and Bethany were together and positioned them side by side before either of them could correct the misunderstanding. When a bucket of water was dumped over them, Charles instinctively stepped in front of Bethany to shield her soaked dress from the crowd.Other than that, nothing inappropriate had ever happened between them. The moment Charles f

Eva's voice was frantic. "Ch-Charles, Beth's drunk, and she's trying to leave with some guy. I don't know who he is, and I'm scared something might happen to her. Can you come?"For years, Eva had acted as though Charles was still the first person Bethany should turn to whenever something went wrong. He had always let it slide, partly because Eva was younger and partly because helping had once seemed harmless. Now, though, the assumption grated on him."Eva, Beth isn't my responsibility anymore."But Eva was crying too hard to even process what he said.Charles was already on edge, and the sound of her sobbing made him want to hang up.Still, he had watched Eva grow up and thought of her as a younger sister. Worried that she might be in trouble too, he went anyway. The moment he stepped into the private lounge, confetti cannons exploded in his face."Surprise!"His friends burst into cheers.Bethany was sitting safely in the middle of the couch with one arm around Eva. The man on the other end let out an impatient laugh."Come on, man. Your number is in the sales contract. How could I have the wrong number? The seller gave it to me and told me to call when I was ready to move in."He gave Julia's name and described the house in exact detail. The longer Charles listened, the less sense any of it made. How could Julia sell the house without even discussing it with him? Was this another one of her attempts to make a point? It was unbelievably childish. He forced himself to keep his temper under control."I'm sorry, but the house is no longer for sale. Whatever you paid, I'll pay you double."After ending the call, Charles immediately dialed Julia's number. A recorded message informed him that the number had been disconnected. He rubbed the space between his eyebrows and forced himself to stay calm, and then sent her a message.[Can you please grow up and stop this?]A single gray check mark appeared beside the message. It had been sent, but no

Charles stiffened. He was already furious that Julia had been ignoring him, and being yelled at for no apparent reason only made his temper spike."I didn't cancel the wedding. What the hell are you talking about?"The man on the other end gave a disbelieving laugh."How are you the last person to know your own wedding was canceled? Call the venue yourself if you don't believe me. They said the reception's off. Don't tell me Julia dragged you through all this when she never planned to marry you in the first place."Charles had no idea what was going on, but he was still clearheaded enough to snap, "Shut the hell up if you don't know what you're talking about! Who are you to accuse Julia of something like that?"He ended the call, got out of bed, and opened the closet, still refusing to believe it.He vaguely remembered Julia bringing home the suit she had ordered for him, but he had been too busy tutoring Eva to even try it on.Now, the closet was empty. Before he could make s
