Chapter 5

Author: Cheesie
That evening, Reese insisted on taking me to the pack gathering.

"Staying cooped up at home will only ruin your mood further," he reasoned. "Everyone is worried about you and wants to see how you're recovering."

I didn't want to go at first. But then I remembered the official file, and I turned to look at him. "Will Richard be there?"

He blinked, caught off guard by the question. "Yeah, he will. Why the sudden interest in him?"

I shook my head softly. "Ask him to bring that file I stored with him. I need it for something."

He nodded, about to ask for more details, when Selena burst through the door, beaming. "How is everyone doing? Are we ready to head out together?"

Interrupted, Reese dropped his line of questioning and walked toward the entrance with a smile.

I stayed quiet, silently trailing behind them.

The private room was brightly lit.

The moment I sat down, someone teased with a laugh, "Can our future Luna handle the lights right now? Or should we dim them for you?"

Selena immediately swatted the guy's arm. "Stop teasing her! She’s way too precious for your jokes."

The whole room burst into laughter.

Reese placed a cup of moonberry juice in front of me, thoughtfully popping the straw in. "Drink up." Then he looked up and added in a casual, nonchalant tone, "Alright, pipe down, everyone. Fiona prefers quiet."

That set off another round of hooting and hollering.

"Look at you two, still so deeply in love! When are you guys finally holding the ceremony?"

Reese gave a small smile. "Next year. I want Fiona to fully recover her strength this year. When the time comes, I'll host the grandest ceremony the pack has ever seen."

Amidst the noisy chatter, someone happened to bring up the incident in the rooftop conservatory.

Selena rested her chin on her hands, smiling innocently. "I honestly had no idea. I just saw how frail Fiona was and wanted to help her build up her endurance. Who would've guessed I'd sprain my ankle on the way down, dragging out the whole trip?

"I really didn't think it was that big a deal. When the Alpha was helping me downstairs, I even joked with him, asking if he wanted to place a bet on whether Fiona would get tan in that short time or stay just as pale."

Someone hollered, "What did the Alpha bet on?"

Selena turned her eyes to Reese.

Reese remained quiet, so she answered on his behalf. "He bet that no matter how long she stayed in the sun, Fiona would always be pale, just like a porcelain doll."

A few guys whistled. "Hey, isn't that a compliment to Fiona? Sounds like you two really are madly in love!"

My hands clamped tight around my cup, my fingertips turning icy cold.

Noticing my pale face, Reese finally spoke up to end it. "Alright, let's move past this."

"Move past it for who?" I asked, my voice low and steady.

He looked over at me. "Fiona..."

I stood up from my seat. "I was the one who got burned."

The room fell instantly silent.

Reese's face darkened. "Do you really have to embarrass everyone here tonight?"

"I just want to know why the person in pain isn't allowed to say it hurts," I replied quietly.

No one answered.

I picked up the file from the table, turned around, and walked straight out the door.

By the time I stepped outside, night had completely fallen. Tears began to stream down my face, but I wiped them away haphazardly with the back of my hand.

My mind drifted back to when we first got together. Under the brilliant moonlight, while I was homesick, he held my hand with eyes filled with sincerity.

"Fiona, if there ever comes a day when I stop treating you right, leave this place. Don't ever let yourself be mistreated. But I promise you that day will never come."

Yet here it was.

I looked down at the file in my hands. It was the very last document needed for me to leave the pack for good.

My phone buzzed, and I clicked open the message right away.

[We can arrange your departure tomorrow morning. Are the file and the signed consent form ready?]

I glanced back over my shoulder. The quiet path behind me was empty—Reese hadn't chased after me.

[Everything is ready.]

[Great. I'll be waiting downstairs for you first thing tomorrow morning.]

After reading the final message, I popped the SIM card out of my phone and tossed it into a nearby trash bin.

From now on, I would never have to endure another second of disrespect.

I was going to start a new life.

News of how he had favored another woman and mistreated his future mate spread like wildfire, shattering his long-standing reputation as a devoted and responsible leader. Many in the pack lost all respect for him, while the elders openly questioned his capabilities. His position as Alpha was now hanging by a thread. As for Selena, she wasn't banished from the pack. However, the fallout was simply too immense. Someone had eventually exposed how she constantly clung to Reese, making the entire pack realize she was the root cause behind our split. The next day, I stood before the doors of the rooftop conservatory once again, design sketches in hand under the bright morning sky.The glass dome reflected vast sheets of blinding white light, but I was fully prepared. I wore my wide-brimmed shade hat, high-protection sunglasses, and light-blocking mask, with my umbrella held firmly. The site crew had already set up a massive canopy for me well in advance. The second they saw me, they rushed over to double-check the setup. "Is the lighting okay at this angle? If it's still too glaring, we can add another layer of blackout tarp right away."I nodded softly. "It's perfect, thank you."No one mocked me for being overly delicate or urged me to just tough it out for a bit.I stepped into the conservatory, where white blossoms bloomed quietly in the shadows, their petals still glistening with morning dew. It suddenly dawned on me then that I hadn't dreamed of that agonizing noon in a very long time.On my way over, a she-wolf from

Reese still hadn't given up and started appearing near my apartment and studio almost daily. That afternoon, Kyle was helping me carry a heavy roll of canvas. Afraid that the sharp edges might scrape my arm, Kyle instinctively reached out to block the side with his hand.Reese, leaning against his car nearby, saw the gesture and charged over, his face thoroughly darkened. "Who is he?"I stopped in my tracks. "A coworker."Kyle looked between the two of us before turning to me. "Do you need me to stay, Fiona?""No, it's fine."Once he secured the canvas, Kyle turned to remind me before leaving, "You still managed to scrape yourself earlier. Don't forget to put medicine on it when you get home."Overhearing this, Reese let out a cold, bitter laugh. "So now, even simple reminders to apply your medicine fall on strangers?"I looked at him calmly. "Did you need something?""How long have you known each other?""That's none of your business.""Fiona, we haven't even been split up

That evening, I spotted Reese standing right outside my apartment door, holding a heavy backpack. It had been nearly a month since I last saw him, and he looked weathered and exhausted, his eyes bloodshot. I wasn't surprised that he had found me. After all, once Selena knew where I lived, it was only a matter of time before she passed the location along to him.I made no move to open the door.Panic flared in his eyes as he scrambled to pull things out of his backpack—specialized ointment, heavy-duty solar patches, and high-protection sunglasses. It was everything I had actually needed. Except I no longer had any desire to open that door for him."Fiona, you're in there, right? I brought you your medicine. The stuff from human hospitals isn't strong enough for your condition, so I brought extra.""Just leave it at the door," I said softly. The shadow outside froze."Fiona, are you still mad at me? Can you please open the door? I just want to see how your wounds are healing."

I didn't expect Selena to be the first person to track me down. When I arrived at work as usual, she was waiting right outside the studio entrance."Fiona, we need to talk."I tried to walk straight past her, but she stepped forward, blocking my path."Reese hasn't handled pack affairs for days now, and the elders are furious. I wanted to persuade him, but he blocked my number and cut off all contact. He even threw away everything I ever gave him."I looked at her. "And what does that have to do with me?"Selena bit her lower lip. "You won, okay? You should go back and talk some sense into him."I almost laughed out loud. "I won? So even now, you still view all of this as some kind of game?"Her face shifted, her voice rising uncontrollably. "Isn't it? Aren't you throwing this fit all because of that stupid bet?"My expression turned stony. "You two bet on whether I would tan, bet on how long I could endure the agony, and bet that I'd still choose to forgive him even after b

The person who came to pick me up was Teagan, a Beta warrior. She had just returned from a short-term mission at the border and was my only friend in the Blood Moon Wolf Pack.Since my burns still hadn't healed, she loaded my luggage into the car before turning back to help me inside."How did you end up so badly hurt this time? That jerk... look at how much you've suffered because of him."I smiled but said nothing.Teagan drove smoothly, deliberately keeping the speed down so I wouldn't feel uncomfortable. As the pack's territory faded into the distance behind us, I finally returned to a human settlement for the first time in five years. Not wanting my family to worry about my injuries, I decided to rent a place of my own.The apartment was neat and compact, a simple one-bedroom facing north. The windows were small, and there was a hospital and a pharmacy nearby."This unit doesn't get much sunlight, which is why it's been hard to rent out," the landlord mentioned. "Are you s
