Chapter 4

Author: Wild Wheat
After getting off the plane and riding on buses and cars, I travelled for two days before finally arriving home.

Standing at the gates where the familiar lands stretched out beneath my feet, I couldn't bring myself to push the door.

Years ago, Elliot and I had fallen in love when he came here for a business trip. I'd left with him for the south without a second thought.

Mom had never approved from the start, but she couldn't change my mind. So for ten years, I kept every grievance and heartache to myself, for fear that she'd worry.

Now that I was back, I wasn't sure how I should face her.

While I was deep in thought, the door opened, and Mom appeared. In that instant, I could see what time had done to us—how I'd grown hollow and worn, and how much she'd aged.

As our eyes fell on each other's faces, they instantly welled up with tears.

Mom stepped forward to pull me into her arms and held my thin shoulders. "All that matters is that you're home now. Losing you is the Sheppard fam

I woke up in a pitch-dark warehouse with my hands and feet bound.Elliot stood there, disheveled and staring at me with unblinking intensity.Still weak and sluggish, I warily glared at him. "Have you gone insane? How dare you kidnap me?"He let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, I'm very much insane, and it's all your fault! You abandoned me and our son, and now you're seeing that jerk who ruined my company!"I was shocked to hear that, as I never knew how much Lucian had done for me behind the scenes.Seeing me distracted, Elliot's anger flared. "Tell me, why did you leave me? You promised you'd love me only for the rest of your life!"If you won't say it, I'll drag you back to the Sheppard residence and make sure you can only be my wife!"I spat at him. "In your dreams! If you do that, I'll fucking kill you!"He threw his head back and cackled manically, his eyes red with anger. And somehow, tears started streaming down his cheeks. "Fine! Before I die, I want my last second to be wi

I'd expected Elliot to give up, but he didn't. If anything, he doubled down and dragged Rowan along to harass me in every way he could. The maids would throw them out on sight and resort to force more than once.Outside, Elliot would shout to everyone that he was my husband. But when people asked for proof, he had none, and he could only yank Rowan forward to claim that he was my son.Eventually, I was so fed up that I decided to face him.Elliot's eyes lit up as he urged Rowan to call me "Mom". But the latter stubbornly turned his face away and refused to look at me. "She's just a nanny, not my mom! My mom's at home waiting for me, and she's the only mom I've got!"Flustered, Elliot slapped him right across the cheek. "Say it! She's your real mom!"Rowan burst into loud, panicked sobs. "You're the one who told me Mom almost died having me, that I should love and treat her well. So, why am I getting slapped for doing exactly that?"I have just one mom, and I'm not gonna call a

Lucian took me to the races. The stadium thundered with deafening shouts and whistles as everyone cheered for their chosen horse to win the intense race. I was just as caught up in the rush. When the race ended, a staff member brought over the winnings. "That's a lot." I gasped."Mr. Valmont placed bets on every horse."I puzzledly turned to him, and he explained, "I didn't want you to feel disappointment. "Celeste, you don't actually think I took you riding every day just for fun, do you?"His brows were raised in a teasing arch, while his eyes were dark and impossible to look away from. I could feel my cheeks flush with heat and my heart pounding as I asked, "Why then?"He smirked and leaned in with one hand bracing on the back of my chair. "I expanded my grandpa's stables abroad the moment I took over my family business. And when I heard you were back, I dropped everything and rushed home."I had your favorite horse chosen for you and gathered every little thing you might

When the Lipizzan calmed down, I finally heaved a sigh of relief."Are you hurt?" the man asked. Not only was he ridiculously good-looking, but his voice sounded so deep and rich that I blushed a little."I'm fine, but you saved me back there, and I owe it to you. To thank you, come to my birthday party tonight and have dinner with us."As we rode on the same horse, his soft, amused laugh came from behind me and tingled my ears. "Celeste, don't you recognize me anymore?"Startled, I glanced over my shoulder. "You're… Lucian!"Lucian bore little resemblance to the quiet, shy boy he had been when we were kids. Now, he wasn't just dazzling, but his sharp facial features and commanding presence left a striking impression on me.He gave a slight nod, and his words carried an unspoken weight. "Happy birthday, Celeste."Later, he told me that someone would lead the skittish horse home and that we should head back for the evening's celebration. When I'd changed into my gown and put on

For the first time, I defied Elliot."Talk about it some other day? About what? About how close Rowan and Margot have grown as mother and son, or how deeply the two of you love each other?"And when exactly are we gonna talk? When Rowan grows up, marries, and has children of his own? Or when your picture-perfect family of four is six feet under?""Celeste!" Elliot growled. The veins in his neck bulged out, but he restrained himself for Margot and her unborn baby's sake."I told you I'd set everything right, and I'll keep my word! Why do you have to make such a scene?"Rowan's just a kid, and Maggie's pregnant! You coming at her like this is beyond disappointing!"The door slammed shut and isolated the two worlds. Inside was a happy family of three, while I stood outside, alone and frozen in shock.I had no idea how I made it back to my 200-square-foot maid's quarters that were cold and empty. I sat through the night, and the man who'd promised he'd be right back never returned.
