Chapter 5

Author: Ann Chase
Sharp, stinging pain hit him. Jack watched helplessly as bag after bag of his blood was drained from his body.

At first, he was still fairly conscious.

He did not know how much had been drawn, but his vision started to go black.

A bone-chilling cold spread through his entire body, and even his limbs gradually went numb.

Almost instinctively, he looked up at Hazel. He wanted her to hold him the way she used to, or cover his eyes and tell him not to be afraid.

But what he saw was Hazel keeping watch over Bennett.

She was holding his hand as tears welled in her eyes. Her shoulders were shaking from crying.

“Ben, don’t be scared. You’re going to be fine. As long as you pull through, I’ll do anything.”

It was not that Hazel never cried. In all their years together, she had only ever cried three times.

The first time, he had been in a car accident and was covered in blood.

She had abandoned a meeting and rushed to the hospital. She had grabbed his hand and cried her eyes out.

The second time, he had accidentally fallen, hit his head, and suffered severe bleeding. The doctor had said his life was in danger.

She had gone down on her knees, sobbing and begging God to save him, swearing she would give up ten years of her own life if he would just let Jack live.

The third time, they had gone mountain climbing and got caught in an avalanche.

After he shielded her with his body, he was severely injured. She cried and said she wanted to die with him.

But at that moment, she was crying for another man.

She no longer cared about him.

A suffocating pain ripped through his chest, and even his insides churned with a sharp, twisting agony.

He lowered his head as his eyes slid shut.

Alex noticed Jack’s blood pressure plummeting beside him, and his expression changed.

“Hazel, you can’t draw any more blood! Jack’s blood pressure just crashed, and his heart rate is dropping fast. If you keep going, he could die.”

Hazel did not move. She simply asked, “What about Ben? Is he out of danger yet?”

Alex shook his head. “No, he still needs another pint.”

“Then, keep drawing!”

At that moment, Jack’s heart turned completely cold.

Hazel would not relent. Even though Alex knew they could not keep going, there was nothing he could do.

Nearby, Anna shouted, “Dr. Clare, Mr. Brook is having a hemolytic reaction! He’s already in shock! We have to pull the needle right now!”

Only then did Hazel turn and look at Jack in the chair.

His lips were purple, and his face was as pale as paper. His whole body had begun to tremble violently.

“Jack!”

Before he lost consciousness, he finally saw Hazel let go of Bennett’s hand and run toward him.

He never thought that at the very end of his life, he would still get to see her panic over him.

But her concern had come too late to mean anything.

He smiled faintly before finally passing out.

The heart monitor let out a sharp, piercing beep.

Alex panicked and began frantically trying to resuscitate him.

Anna was so terrified that she burst into tears.

If anything happened to Jack, it was a major malpractice case. Her entire career would be ruined for the rest of her life.

“Dr. Clare, Mr. Brook has thalassemia! He can’t donate this much blood! You forced him to donate. What if something happens to him?!”

“Alright, that’s enough! I’m not going to let anything happen to Jack!”

The hospital room descended into chaos.

Hazel stood frozen off to the side as her face grew paler by the second.

“Hmm.”Jack felt exhausted. He could not even speak any words.Hazel wanted to say something to him, but she realized she did not even have a chance to do it.After a few steps, Jack said to her, “Hazel, what happened today is on you. We’re done for good. “Perhaps we’ve been done for a long time.”With that, he left the tux shop.Hazel stood there frozen. She could not move a single step.Meanwhile, at the hospital, after getting bandaged up, Jack wanted to go visit Trisha.Isla frowned. “Don’t worry. My mother is fine.”“But she got traumatized because of me. I must apologize.”She smiled and said, “Are you worried my mom won’t accept you?“Relax, she will accept you. We’re already married. We just haven’t had the wedding yet. Even if she doesn’t like it, she won’t do anything to you.”Trisha emerged at the door, startling Jack as she said, “Hmph, you sure know me well.”He quickly got off the hospital bed. “Mrs. Jenkins.”“Are you still calling me Mrs. Jenkins? Seeing Jack getting the worst of it, Isla picked her moment and kicked Bennett square in the chest.“Ugh!”The kick came out of nowhere. Bennett fell down hard, spitting out a mouthful of blood. At the same time, her bodyguards rushed in and pinned him to the floor, restraining him completely.“Don’t move, or don’t blame us for what happens next!”“Let me go! Jack, if you’ve got the guts, fight me one-on-one! What kind of man are you to hide behind these guys?!“Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, let me tell you a secret! Jack is infertile! Aren’t you afraid the Jenkins family will have no heir?”“Shut your mouth!”Isla glared at him and said viciously, “Even if Jack really can’t have children, I won’t divorce him! Whether we have kids or not doesn’t matter to me at all. All that matters is that Jack loves me.”Bennett laughed when he heard that. “Haha, why? How does Jack, a divorced man, get to be this happy?“He finds someone who loves him this much, and I can’t? I’m barely in my twen

Meanwhile, Jack and Isla’s mother, Trisha Jenkins, were at the tux shop.“Mrs. Jenkins, what do you think of this suit?”“Mm, not bad.” She was clearly satisfied. “Go try it on. It should fit you well.”“Okay, give me a moment.”He went into the fitting room to try on the suit. He had only just started to change when he heard a scream outside.“Help! Oh my god, what are you doing?!”“Mrs. Jenkins, watch out! Someone, come quick!”“Sir, please calm down! Nobody has to get hurt here.”Jack pulled the curtain open and stepped out. “What’s going on?”He saw Bennett holding a fruit knife to Trisha’s throat.“Bennett, let Mrs. Jenkins go!”Trisha’s face was pale. She was so scared that her voice was trembling as she said, “Young man, whatever you want, just say it. If I can give it to you, I’ll do my best. I’m old. I can’t handle being scared like this!”Bennett stared at Jack and smiled wickedly.“You’ll give me whatever I want?” “Then, I want your daughter not to be marr

After Hazel was thrown out of Isla’s place, her phone rang.It was Deborah, her secretary, calling.“Ms. Fresco, do you have time to come into the office today?”“Didn’t I say I’d be busy these days and not to bother me? I’m swamped!”“But you really should come in. Something’s happened at the company.”Deborah sounded anxious. Hazel knew she was not going to be able to smooth things over with Jack anytime soon, so she had no choice but to drive straight to the office. The moment she arrived, Deborah came rushing over.“Ms. Fresco, there’s a problem with the company’s financial records. Someone stole money from the company. The finance team ran the numbers, and it’s about fifty million dollars.”“Have you figured out who did it?”“Yes, we have.”Deborah handed Hazel the surveillance footage.“It was Mr. Oldham.”“Bennett!”The moment she saw the man in the video, she gritted her teeth in fury. She had not expected him to be so brazen as to embezzle nearly fifty million

“Isla, you actually slept with Jack!”She charged at her like a madwoman and tried to hit her.The Jenkins family bodyguards rushed over and pinned her down.“Ms. Fresco, calm down, or we’ll have to ask you to leave.”“Impossible! Jack loves me. He wouldn’t sleep with you. He wouldn’t!”“The evidence is right here. He’s my husband now. Me sleeping with him is perfectly normal, isn’t it?”Isla stood up with a smile and walked over to her. “Hazel, I should actually thank you. If it weren’t for you, I never would’ve gotten what I wanted with Jack. He’s a good guy. I swear I’ll never betray him. “As for you, you’ve got that intern of yours. That can’t be too bad either, right? So, why come here and stir up trouble?”“I don’t love Bennett at all. He and I are done!”“What’s that got to do with me? All I can tell you is that Jack and I are never breaking up. Thanks for handing him right to me.”“Isla, don’t get ahead of yourself! What’s so great about you? Jack is just some guy

Back at Isla’s place, Jack had gradually fallen in love with her over the time they spent together. She was patient and considerate toward him, yet cold as ice to everyone else.He was the only one who ever saw her smile. When she did, her tiny dimples would show, and it was adorable. He loved to pinch her cheek and tease her, asking, “Isla, do you know you look really beautiful when you smile?”“I didn’t know. Very few people have seen me smile.”“Then, doesn’t that mean that I’ve struck the jackpot? Because I see you smiling almost every day.”“Yeah, you did.”She wrapped her arms around him and asked, “What do you want for dinner tonight?”“Anything’s fine.”“I’ll cook.”“You can cook?” he asked in shock. She lowered her head and said in a more tender tone, “Mm. I’m good at a lot of things.”He blushed. “Don’t say things like that.”She pretended not to know. “Like what?”He pushed her away. “You know what I mean.”She loved seeing him blush and wanted to tease him a
