LOGINWhen I woke up the next morning, everything still hurt my head, my body, and my heart. Nothing had changed. Ethan was still Anabel's brother. The rule was still the rule. And I was still stuck in the middle of the worst situation I'd ever been in, still confused about what to do. I wish it were all a dream.
I picked up my phone. And I saw another three messages from Ethan and two from Anabel. I opened Anabel's first.
[Anabel: Morning, babe! Don't forget about Ethan's welcome party this weekend. You're coming, right?]
[Anabel: I really want you to meet my brother properly. I think you guys would actually get along. He's smart and funny just like you.]
I felt sick reading these messages. If only Anabel knew. I didn't reply to her messages. I checked Ethan’s text too.
[Ethan: Linda, please talk to me. Whatever I did, I'm sorry.]
[Ethan: I miss you.]
[Ethan: At least tell me you're okay.]
Each message felt like a knife twisting deeper into my heart. But I couldn't respond to any of it. Because if I did, I'd want to see him. And if I saw him, I'd fall even harder. And that is not going to help me in any way.I just locked my phone and dragged myself to the bathroom to get ready for work. I told myself I'd figure this out one day at a time.
But deep down, I knew the truth. There was no good way out of this. Someone was going to get hurt. And I was terrified it would be all of us.
I showed up at my studio with sunglasses on and two coffees in my hand. Maya took one look at me and noticed immediately that something was wrong.
"Okay, Lin…what happened?" she asked, following me into my office.
"Nothing happened," I said coldly. She raised an eyebrow.
"Lin, you don't even know how to lie. You look like you cried all night. And you never drink two coffees. So spill it now!!!"
She moved closer and removed the sunglasses to confirm what she just said. I set both cups down on my desk and sank into my chair.
"I can't talk about it, Maya. It's complicated; you can't understand."
"Then make me understand. Is it the mystery guy? Ethan?"
Just hearing his name made my chest tighten. I nodded slowly with tears forming in my eyes.
Maya sat down across from me, and her usual teasing smile vanished. "Did he do something to you? Because if he hurts you, I will personally skin….."
"No," I cut her off. "He didn't do anything wrong, and that's the problem."
She tilted her head, confused. "I don't understand. What do you mean he didn't do anything wrong, and that's a problem?"
"I can't see him anymore, Maya. It's... complicated."
"Complicated how? Linda, are you going to explain to me, or do you want to keep beating around the bush?"
I looked at her, debating whether to say it out loud. But keeping it inside was killing me. I needed to let someone know before I go crazy.
"He's Anabel's brother, Maya," I finally said, breaking into tears.
Maya's eyes went wide. "Wait. What? The guy from the bar is Anabel’s brother? Your Anabel?"
"Yes, my Anabel." I dropped my head into my hands.
Maya leaned back slowly. “Oh... Wow.”
“Yeah,” I said, letting out a bitter laugh. Maya stayed quiet, letting it sink in.
“So… Anabel doesn’t know?” Maya asked.
“No, she doesn't,” I said quickly.
“And Ethan?”
“He doesn’t know either. Not yet.”
Maya rubbed her forehead. “Wow...”
"I didn't know. Maya, I swear I didn't know. And now that I do, and I can't... I can't do this. I can’t see Ethan anymore."
"Why not? Is it not even better that he's your best friend's brother?" Maya asked, looking confused.
I looked up at her like she'd lost her mind. I started shaking my head. "Maya, you don't understand; you don't get it."
Maya was still looking confused. "Okay… explain to me what you mean because I don’t get you, and you are scaring me…"
"Anabel and I have a rule," I screamed. "We made a rule some years back that there is no dating of family members. It's the one line we don't and can’t cross."
"Okay, but..." Maya hesitated. "Lin, you really like him, don't you?"
I didn't answer Maya immediately. I was just staring at her. My silence said everything. I eventually replied, “Yes,” I whispered. “I really do.”
"Then tell Anabel," Maya said gently. "Talk to her. I’m sure she'll understand."
"She won't," I replied, shaking my head in disagreement.
"You don't know that."
"Yes, I do." I stood up and started sorting through fabric samples on the table beside me; I needed something to do with my hands.
"You don't know her as I do. This rule isn't just something we made up on a whim. It really matters to her. Family matters to Anabel a lot. And I'm not going to be the person who breaks that."
Maya was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, "So… what are you going to do about it now?"
"I'm going to end it before it even starts."
Maya leaned forward. “Lin, I get it. You’re trying to protect everyone. But shutting him out without a word? That’s not you, and it’s not fair on him either.
“I don’t have a choice,” I said quietly. “If I keep seeing him, it’ll only get worse.”
“And what if you already love him?” she asked quietly.
The questions hit harder, and I could feel the pain in my chest. I couldn't answer Maya.
Maya reached for my hand across the desk and took it. "Listen to me, Maya. You don’t have to decide everything today. But you can’t pretend this thing between you and Ethan didn’t happen."
I nodded, my eyes stinging. “I know.”
“Then start with honesty,” she said. “At least with him, he deserves to know.”
I shook my head. “I can’t. Not yet.”
She squeezed my hand. “Okay. Then at least be honest with yourself.”
I pulled my hand back and wiped my face quickly. “Can we please just… work?”
Maya stood up. “Okay, fine. I will leave you for now.”She paused at the door. "But Lin?…"
I looked up.
“Running away doesn’t stop feelings. It just makes them hurt more.”
After she left, I stared at my phone for a long time. There were more missed calls. More messages.
I didn’t open them.
Not because I didn’t care. But because I cared too much, and that scared me more than anything else.
Nothing about me felt normal anymore. Although life didn't stop.I went back to work on Tuesday. I answered emails. I reviewed designs. I made sketches. I had meetings. I gave feedback and smiled at the right moments. From the outside, everything looked fine. But inside, something was quietly missing. My best friend.Anabel.It had only been a few days but her absence was everywhere. Not in a dramatic, obvious way. But in the small ways that sneak up on you when you're not paying attention. I would see something funny on my way to work and reach for my phone to send it to her before remembering. I would finish a long day and feel the urge to call her just to complain about nothing, the way we always did. I would open our chat and stare at the last message I sent her. Still undelivered. It was just sitting there with a single grey tick like a door that had been quietly shut in my face.I had made my choice. I chose Ethan and I didn't regret it. But choosing him didn't make the loss of
I woke up with the decision already sitting in my chest. It wasn’t a clean or certain decision. Just the quiet, heavy feeling of someone who had made up their mind to do the hard thing and was already grieving it.I was going to choose Anabel.I told myself it was the right choice to make. That it was what love looked like sometimes. Making a sacrifice by choosing the person who had been there longer. Choosing the friendship that had held me together through everything before Ethan ever existed.I got dressed quietly, thanked Maya, and drove to Ethan's place.I don't know why I went there instead of just calling, maybe because I owed him that much. To say it to his face and not be a coward about it.He opened the door and the moment he saw me his whole face shifted. Relief first. Then concern followed."Lin..." My name came out like a breath he had been holding in. "Come in. I've been worried sick," he stepped aside immediately. "Where have you been?" he asked. "I came back home and
Maya didn't ask questions or even say anything when I walked in. She just took one look at my face, stepped aside, and let me in. I sat on her couch and she disappeared into the kitchen. A few minutes later she came back with two mugs of tea and sat beside me. She still didn't say anything. She just waited. That was the thing about Maya. She always knew when to wait. I stared at the mug in my hands for a long time before I finally spoke."I met with Anabel today at Ethan’s place."Maya didn't react. She just looked at me."Okay… so what happened?" she asked, sipping her tea."She gave me an ultimatum," I said.My voice sounded too flat. Maya tilted her head slightly. "What kind of ultimatum?" she asked looking confused.A sob tore out of me so suddenly it startled even me. I bent forward, covering my face with both hands as the tears came hard and fast, like they had been waiting for permission."Hey…" Maya moved closer immediately, rubbing my back. "Hey, it’s okay…"I shook my head,
Ethan's phone buzzed. He glanced at it and his expression shifted."I have to take this," he said, standing. He walked a few steps away and a short conversation followed. Then he came back toward us looking apologetic."I’m so sorry. It's work," he said."A foreign client just landed and the deal meeting I’ve been waiting on for weeks has been moved forward. I have to go now."He looked between us. "Will you both be okay?"Anabel nodded once."Yeah, sure." I nodded too."Yeah, we’ll be fine."He hesitated, and then squeezed my hand briefly and kissed my forehead. He grabbed his keys."I won’t be long."A few minutes later, the door clicked shut behind him.And then it was just the two of us. That was too easy, I thought. Suddenly the room felt very different. The silence stretched between us. I sat with my hands in my lap, waiting. For the first time in years, I felt awkward sitting across from my best friend. Anabel was quiet, staring at the space where Ethan had been sitting. Somet
The knock came again. It was harder this time. Ethan and I looked at each other. Neither of us moved."Ethan." Her voice was flat and certain from the other side of the door. "Open the door. It's me."The sound of her voice sent a sharp wave of panic through my chest. "She’s not supposed to be here yet," I whispered."I know," he muttered. The meeting wasn’t until the afternoon. It was barely morning. Ethan exhaled slowly and rubbed a hand over his face. He got up, grabbed a shirt from the chair beside the bed, and pulled it on quickly. He ran his hand through his hair as he walked to the door. I pulled the covers up slightly, my heart hammering. I was still in his t-shirt. My hair was a mess. No version of this looked like anything other than exactly what it was. Ethan held the doorknob, then paused and glanced back at me."Stay here for a second," he said quietly.I nodded, even though every part of me wanted to disappear entirely. He opened the bedroom door. I couldn’t see her at
He reached over and took my hand."It's okay, babe. I'm not here to make you feel worse. I just need you to know that I'm not going anywhere so don’t push me away because you feel guilty. And don’t act like what we have here doesn’t matter, because it does."His eyes held mine. He brushed my hair behind my ear with his hand."I love you a lot, Lin. And I’m not going to stop loving you just because my sister is angry right now."The words settled somewhere deep inside my chest. Warm and steady like something I didn't know I needed to hear until he said it."Anabel will come around," he added."But don’t let us ruin what we have before she does."Something in my chest loosened at those words. I nodded slowly."I’m sorry," I said again. "I didn’t mean to ignore you. I just… I hate what this has done to her. I hate that I'm the reason she's hurting.""I know, Lin," he said softly. "I hate it too.""I just don't want it to look like we're rubbing it in her face," I said carefully. "Like we
I left work early to come home and clear my head. I just finished dinner and was about to upload some pictures of my new collections to my fashion page.It was around 8 pm when someone knocked on my apartment door. I wasn't expecting anyone. Maya had gone home hours ago, and Anabel was busy with th
I almost didn't go.I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone. I was already dressed in a beautiful emerald green dress that hugged my body perfectly. My makeup was flawless, my hair was styled, and I looked stunning. But inside, I felt like I was falling apart. I was having cold feet.I did
I reached for a glass of wine from a passing server and took a long sip, to give my hands something to do and to calm my nerves down."So… you came, " a voice said softly behind me.I turned slightly and saw Ethan standing next to me. My heart raced. I opened my mouth to respond, but the words woul
Anabel showed up at my apartment later that evening, long after I had changed out of my dress and washed off my makeup. I was just about to make myself a cup of tea when I heard her familiar knock, four quick taps and two slow ones—our signature knock since college. I froze for a second. I wasn’t e
