Fafane “Why?” I whispered, the single word barely leaving my lips. “Why?” my sister repeated with a cruel laugh. “You want to know why?” She stood in front of me, lazily twirling a knife between her fingers before dragging over a chair and sitting across from me as though we were old friends sharing tea instead of my nightmare. “Where do I even begin?” she mused. “You had everything, the perfect life, the perfect fiancé, and everyone adored you.” “I shared everything I had with you,” I said, my voice cracking. “You were never just my sister; you were my best friend.” “Oh, please.” She let out a dry, mocking laugh before lifting my chin with the tip of the knife. “So what? Was I supposed to spend my entire life living in your shadow? Grateful for your leftovers?” “I never saw you as someone beneath me.” Tears blurred my vision. “I loved you. I would have given you anything.” “And you did.” Her smile widened. “Your life. Your future. Even your fiancé.” My heart stopped. Henry stepped out of the shadows, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. The engagement ring he had placed on my finger only weeks ago suddenly felt like a cruel joke. He didn’t even try to deny it. He smiled at her. “You.” My voice trembled. “Henry, why?” He slipped an arm around my sister’s waist without an ounce of guilt. Before I could process the betrayal, a sharp kick slammed into my side, knocking me onto the cold floor. I looked up, desperately searching for someone to save me. Instead, I found the two people I had called Mom and Dad standing beside Henry, watching my suffering with smiles on their faces. “Please,” I begged. “Help me.” Not one of them moved, nor did they look guilty. I only saw hatred staring back at me. My sister crouched beside me, her grin growing wider. “I’ll let you in on a little secret.” She brushed a strand of hair behind my ear as if comforting me. “Those aren’t your parents.” My breath caught. “They’re mine,” she laughed. The room spun. “Your real parents?” She chuckled. “They’re the richest family in the city. When you were born, my father stole you after your mother ended a business partnership that made him millions. He raised you under another name while I enjoyed watching you live the life that was always supposed to be mine.” Every word shattered another piece of my soul. “And now,” she whispered, pressing the knife against my throat, “I’m taking the rest.” I watched as Henry, my fiancé, pulled my sister into his arms and gave her a sweet kiss, the way he used to with me, while my parents stood behind them and laughed. All the while, I was here on the floor inside a dirty warehouse, bleeding to death, and the people I call family didn't give a damn. If I have to get a second chance, I'll make them payChapter 52 Quashawn After dinner, everyone returned to the family house for dessert and tea. I took the opportunity to step outside and get some fresh air. With my hands tucked into my pockets, I stared out into the dark yard until I heard the door open behind me. Fafane’s grandmother came to stand beside me. “You married my granddaughter,” she said without bothering with small talk. “What are your intentions?” Intentions? “To love and cherish her,” I answered without hesitation. She scoffed. “That’s it?” I glanced at her, an interesting reaction. I decided to test the waters. After Fafane's question at dinner and her grandmother’s reaction, I had a feeling the older woman knew more than she was willing to say. “With the way her family treats her, I believe my love can cover more than enough.” She didn’t answer. “Don’t you think?” I added. She sighed before crossing her arms over her chest. “Even a stranger could see their favoritism.” Her eyes remained on the yard. “Take
Chapter 51 Fafane Saturday night, I was fastening my seatbelt when the passenger door opened. Before I could even turn my head, Quashawn slid into the seat beside me and closed the door. “Uhmm, what are you doing?” I asked. He reached for his seatbelt. “Going to the mall with my wife.” He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I stared at him for a moment. “Quashawn, you don’t have to come with me.” He turned his head slowly, giving me a look that made me feel like I’d just said something ridiculous. “What kind of husband would I be if I didn’t accompany my wife to the mall to get her grandmother a birthday gift?” “The kind who has his own things to do?” I asked. “My schedule is clear.” He replied. “Of course it is,” I muttered. A hint of amusement touched his face, but he didn’t move. He settled deeper into the passenger seat as he’d already won the argument. I sighed; there was absolutely no point in telling this man to get out of my car. Knowing Qua
Chapter 50 Quashawn Do you want one? Unbelievable, the question kept replaying in my head over and over again as I cut up some fruit while waiting for her to come home. Do I want a honeymoon? The second I heard the front door open, I didn’t even give her a chance to settle in. “If I want one?” She froze before slowly walking farther into the house. She stopped in front of me. “It’s a valid question, isn’t it?” I put the bowl on the table. “Valid?” I wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her against my chest. Lifting her chin, I forced her to look at me. “Woman, I’ve told you I wanted a marriage, not a pretend one. So yes, I want a honeymoon.” She blinked a couple of times before pushing against my chest. I let her go. “Well, yes, you did say that.” She cleared her throat. “I’ll look through them later.” I stared at her, then placed a hand over my chest. “Oh, Lord. She didn’t even look at them before replying.” I stumbled backward dramatically until I fell onto the couch
Chapter 49 Fafane “Ugh.” I threw the documents onto the desk and closed my eyes. In my last life, I thought working in the office was easy. “Only because you were stupid,” I murmured to myself. Back then, I didn’t think about anything. I signed papers without reading them all because I was always too busy rushing out the door to prepare for my wedding with my future husband. Now, I actually had to focus on the paperwork, and the more I focused, the more I saw exactly who had been stealing from my company and how many parasites I needed to clear out. Just as I was getting comfortable, my assistant walked in with a folder pressed against her chest and a grim expression on her face. “Uh-uh. What is it now?” I turned fully to face her. She sat down across from me. “It’s nothing major, since you already know Henry’s proposition was rejected.” Ah, yes, that was still good news. Good news that could bring me happiness for days. “So what has you looking like that?” I asked. She ope
